15 November 2016. Aweil: (Left) A child with severe malnutrition, Achan Akot (2), is measured at the feeding centre (outpatient therapeutic programming) run by Medair in Aweil, South Sudan.

Alarming levels of malnutrition and a severe malaria outbreak are putting thousands of lives at risks in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, South Sudan. A full-scale emergency response has been launched by the humanitarian community. Medair, an international emergency relief and recovery organisation, is part of this response and is providing emergency nutrition and health services, safe water, and sanitation and hygiene support.

The emergency levels of malnutrition are compounded by a malaria upsurge in the past weeks and the limited access to water and sanitation facilities. The prevalence of malaria cases in the area has increased by 400 percent in nine weeks’ time. The limited availability of essential drugs and the small number of staff in health facilities have made it very difficult for people to receive adequate treatment in time unless they have enough money to pay.

Medair’s emergency response team is providing critical services to the most vulnerable in the area. In the past weeks, the team has set up three emergency nutrition clinics to treat children under five with acute malnutrition and is aiming to establish four additional sites. The team is also providing emergency water, sanitation, and hygiene services and has opened a malaria treatment centre in Aweil town.

Cape Fear Opioid Response Team Kickoff Event - August 3, 2018 - City Hall - Wilmington, NC

On Friday, August 3, an event was held marking the kickoff of the Cape Fear Opioid Overdose Quick Response Team, which is funded by the N.C. General Assembly. After a competitive bid process, state funds were directed by Wilmington City Council to Coastal Horizons for a two-year pilot program. This is an outgrowth of efforts over the last two years by New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington to advocate for a response to the state and local opioid epidemic that includes providing resources and tools to local officials, such as the funding for this pilot program. This is the first program of its kind in the state.

Local officials and state legislators were on hand to remark on the start of the program and Coastal Horizons staff provided an overview of how the program is structured.

SWEET CALL AND RESPONSE

By Steve MacDonald and Dana F. Smith

2012, San Francisco, California

edition of 25

Sweet Call and Response was developed with an emphasis on experimentation with the materials - digital printing on canvas, photo collage, machine sewn thread, and sewn collage.

Instinctively, messages are sent to attract a response. This book is a visual poem about communication through the interplay of universal symbols and photographic images.

The book is printed entirely on canvas specially coated for digital printing with pigmented inks. A variety of sewing techniques, such as patchwork and embroidery, are applied to the pages over the ink. Each page of the book is treated with meticulous stitching executed by hand using a home sewing machine. Pages are affected on both sides by the stitching. Inverse images create a visual echo woven into the design of the book, which propels the narrative ever forward.

The Response

1914 War Memorial

Sculptor Sir John Goscombe

On Barras Bridge in grounds fronting Civic Centre, Newcastle

Commissioned by Sir George and Lady Renwick

A striking memorial consisting of a rusticated granite screen on which is mounted a high relief depiction of soldiers responding to the call-up for the First World War, modelled virtually in the round from black bronze. Two drummer boys lead the procession and further back are scenes of men taking leave of their wives and children who are torn between distress and patriotic fervour. The expectant soldiers and anxious loved-ones are portrayed with sympathetic naturalism, whilst the relief is given dynamic impetus by the crush to the left of the composition around the flag and figure of 'Renown', who flies above the crowd with raised trumpet. The stone above her is carved with a low relief castle. The whole is set upon a flight of three shallow steps, amidst a carefully tended flower bed, situated against the background of the Civic Centre.

“… one of the finest sculptural ensembles on any British monument, [...] a magnificent statement displaying John's virtuosity to the full and deserving to be recognised as a key work in this genre” - Alan Borg (former Director General of the Imperial War Museum)

On Wednesday afternoon, July 28, ninety year old Ada Tate and her grandson, John Wilson, were at Ada's home when the Rocky Fire erupted. John had recently arrived to assist his grandmother with some home repairs and also to clear the area to make it fire safe. Ada was outside and noticed the fire burning just a few short miles away. She called the fire department. Within a few hours, Ada and her grandson, John, were told to evacuate. They spent the night at the Red Cross shelter in Clearlake, not certain if the family home had burned or not.
