The Flehmen response (also called the Flehmen position, Flehmen reaction, flehming, or flehmening) is a behaviour whereby an animal curls back its upper lip exposing its front teeth, inhales with the nostrils usually closed and then often holds this position for several seconds.
It may be performed over a site or a substance of particular interest to the animal (e.g. urine or faeces) or may be performed with the neck stretched and the head held high in the air.
Flehmen is performed by a wide range of mammals including ungulates and felids.
The behaviour facilitates the transfer of pheromones and other scents into the vomeronasal organ located above the roof of the mouth via a duct which exits just behind the front teeth of the animal. ( Source: Wikipedia )

I used to believe in so many things. I don't so much any more. You cannot rely on people for the most part. Everyone wants to share their opinion with you now and tell you that you are wrong. I truly believe that social media has killed us. We say things to people online that we would not say to them in person.
No respect.
Happy Fence Friday
PS. photographers and musicians are cool.
A male lion (panthera leo) exhibiting the Flehmen response. Whilst this may look like a threatening baring of teeth, the purpose of this action is to draw the scent of other lion's urine into the Jacobson's organ. This facilitates recognition of other pride members and/or a lioness in oestrous. Photographed in The Kalahari, in Botswana. Ignore the exif data, this shot was done with the Fuji X-E3 plus 7Artisans 35/1.2 lens wide-open (and close up). You may have noticed that the flower to the right is an artificial one. Our home is dotted with living and artificial flowers. My wife is an artist and what counts for her are the colours, shapes and their arrangements. Looking even closer, I could say that what counts for her is what this arrangements sets free inside her mind. It is this inner response that is important, not whether a flower is alive or not. Photographers, discuss!
"The flehmen response in elk involves curling back their upper lip to expose their front teeth, which helps them analyze chemical signals, particularly pheromones, from their environment. This behavior is especially important during mating season, as it allows bulls to assess the reproductive status of females and make informed decisions about courtship"

Just before capturing this shot, the ocean was violently pounding the rocky outcrop with wave after wave. And, a few birds were flying about looking for a place too perch. When the waves suddenly subsided and colors began to appear, one bird found an ideal place to roost. Its response to what had been otherwise violent was quite measured. Now peering out at the ocean and it's less harsh nature, the birds demeanour appeared more calm toward the nature of its surroundings.

During the pandemic, I enlisted a number of my photography friends in a project. Every 2-3 weeks, we would present ourselves a new photography challenge. This we would complete on our own, of course, but would later share our efforts and discuss any learnings we had achieved from them.
Time passes. The pandemic years are blurry for me now. But our communal photography challenge work remains a memory bright spot.
This composition was created in response to one of these photography challenges: "Create an interesting image that emphasizes light and shadow."
I have created a Flickr Album entitled "At Home Creatives" where a selection of similarly-themed photographs will be found. I invite you to visit and I hope you enjoy.

While moving through the countryside, I put my zoom out the window and shot the trees flying by me. (I will add at this point that I was NOT driving) I then added some colour in Lightroom by way of the gradient filter. I am not much of a Photoshop person.

Chirk Castle, occupied virtually continuously as a castle and stately home for almost 700 years, sits on a hilltop with its best views over the Ceiriog valley to the south. The successor to two known mottes in the area, it was probably built by Roger Mortimer, of the powerful Marcher family, who was granted the area by Edward I after the Welsh defeat in 1282. He was almost certainly given royal assistance in its design and construction, and its similarities to Beaumaris suggest that work may have started as late as 1295, perhaps in response to the Welsh rising of 1294.
The cathedral is designed in an Italian Romanesque Revival style. The exterior of the structure is faced with red brick accented with granite. The facade is framed by two square towers that reach a height of 164 ft. The interior was most recently renovated in 1971 when the altar was moved closer to the congregation in response to the II Vatican council. The old marble high altar, topped by a Calvary scene, remains in the apse.
A strange name for a terrace (town house) on Markyate's High Street. Behind the Georgian facade you would find walls going back to the mid-17th century. The gate does also tell you that small coaches or at least horses could be accommodated in the backyard. Before the railway arrived, almost all the houses in the village were in some way or another related to the support for travellers on their way between London and the Midlands.

A White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) buck from Willacy County, Texas.
The peculiar expression on the face of this whitetail buck is known as lip curling, or the Flehmen response. When a buck encounters doe spoor during the rut, he will pause and essentially taste her urine, passing its sent through a structure on the roof of his mouth known as the vomeronasal organ. This organ will detect pheromones and communicate to the buck if the doe is approaching estrus. The organ apparently works best while tilting the head back and curling the lip as demonstrated in this image.

Responses to this week's Macro Monday's challenge produced so many cool and interesting things one might put in a pouch. As I thought about how to approach the challenge I happened to think of of the earliest days of humans on earth. We had fire but couldn't actually make it on our own. Tribal shaman carried well insulated pouches containing a small ember to light the next fire. That concept seemed a little tough in the short time I had but may appear at some future date. Barring the burning ember pouch it occurred to me how helpful a pouch holding light might be for a photographer to take out and spread around as needed... So here it is my take on this week's challenge -- a light pouch. Happy Macro Monday!
About Flickr - I can't get too upset about the new design. After an initial dismay (it is pretty heavy-handed) I found that I never really spent much time on the home page. I always go to the lightbox view of my contacts' photos, which allows me to "walk through" all your wonderful images. It's still there and still fine. Likewise for the Groups pages. I dunno, it's just not worth all the concern. And the "other sites" have very few people doing stuff like alt process.
The Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center is a convention center located in Long Beach, California. Built on the former site of the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium; the venue is composed of the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach Arena and the Long Beach Performing Arts Center.
Long Beach Arena was the first building to be completed in the complex. Capacities are as follows: 11,200 for hockey, 13,609 for basketball and either 4,550, 9,200 or 13,500 for concerts, depending on the seating arrangement.
The arena has hosted various entertainment and professional and college sporting events, most notably the volleyball events of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games.
For trade shows, the arena features 46,000 square feet (4300 m2) of space, with an additional 19,000 square feet (1800 m2) of space in the lobby and 29,000 square feet (2700 m2) in the concourse. Hanging from the arena's 77 foot (23 m) high ceiling is a center-hung scoreboard with four White Way "Mega Color" Animation Screens. There is an 11 by 15 foot SACO Smartvision LED Wall located on the south end of the arena.
The arena was the site of the first NHL game involving a 1967 expansion team, as the Los Angeles Kings and the Philadelphia Flyers, both expansion teams, played on October 14, 1967, the Kings won 4–2. The Kings played in Long Beach for the first half of their expansion season while The Forum was being completed.
In the 1970s, the arena hosted several games of the Los Angeles Sharks, of the WHA and regular appearances of the Los Angeles Thunderbirds roller derby team. The Grateful Dead played the arena on December 15th, 1972; the first of 13 concerts there through 1988.
In 1980–81 the arena was also home to the California Surf of the North American Soccer League for one season of indoor soccer.
The arena was home to the former Long Beach Ice Dogs team, which played professional ice hockey in the IHL, WCHL and ECHL. The Ice Dogs ceased operations of the team in 2007.
The Eagles performed during a benefit concert for California Senator Alan Cranston on July 31, 1980, on what has been described as "Long Night at Wrong Beach".Tempers boiled over as Glenn Frey and Don Felder spent the entire show telling each other about the beating each planned to administer backstage. "Only three more songs until I kick your ass, pal," Frey recalls Felder telling him near the end of the band's set.Felder recalls Frey making a similar threat to him during "Best of My Love"."We're out there singing ‘Best of My Love', but inside both of us are thinking, 'As soon as this is over, I'm gonna kill him,' " recalled Frey. The animosity purportedly developed as a result of Felder's response of "You're welcome – I guess" to Senator Cranston as he was thanking the band for doing the benefit for his reelection. A live recording of their song "Life in the Fast Lane" from this show was included on their live album, entitled Eagles Live. This marked their final live performance, as The Eagles, for 14 years, until April 25, 1994.
Iron Maiden performed four consecutive shows during their World Slavery Tour on March 14–17, 1985. The show on the 15th was recorded and released as a double live-album, entitled Live After Death.
The arena was also one of the sites of the 1986 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship Rounds of 64 and 32. The teams, which played at the arena, included Maryland, Pepperdine & UNLV. Maryland's Len Bias played his final collegiate game at the arena on March 14, 1986, in a loss to UNLV in the Round of 32. The arena was also the site of the Big West Conference men's basketball tournament from 1989 to 1993. It was the home court for Long Beach State's men's basketball team for several seasons in the 1970s and 1980s.
Run–D.M.C. performed during their Raising Hell Tour on August 17, 1986, with Whodini, LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys and The Timex Social Club as their opening act. The show made news worldwide when gang fights broke out between the Long Beach-based Insane Crips and the Los Angeles based Rollin 60's Crips within the audience, with 42 reported injuries during the incident.
From 2009 to 2016, the FIRST Robotics Competition Los Angeles Regional was held at the Long Beach Arena.
On July 1 and 2, 2017, the arena hosted New Japan Pro-Wrestling's G1 Special in USA shows, which marked the company's first independently promoted shows in the United States.
The arena will host handball during the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Dehors, du soleil.
Ce n'est qu'un soleil
mais les hommes le regardent
et ensuite ils chantent.
Je ne sais rien du soleil .
Je sais la mélodie de l'ange
et le sermon brûlant
du dernier vent.
Je sais crier jusqu'Ã l'aube
quand la mort se pose nue
sur mon ombre.
Je pleure sous mon nom.
J'agite des mouchoirs dans la nuit
et des bateaux assoiffés de réalité
dansent avec moi.
Je cache des clous
pour maltraiter mes rêves malades.
Dehors, du soleil.
Je m'habille de cendres.

The delince of the small Montana village of Comertown, founded in 1913, began over 100 years ago, not that it was ever much beyond a few buildings and a post office.
The railroad coming through attracted homesteaders and farmers hoping to take advantage of the locality. But the land proved to be too dry for much more than ranching.
Residents began moving away almost immediately. The post office closed in 1957. Today, one or two of the houses are occupied.
The cemetery rests upon the hill beyond town.

History of Johnstown Castle
The estate itself dates back to the 11th century, when the Esmondes; a family from Lincolnshire, England, settled in the area. The family arrived in County Wexford after the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169.
In 1169, a force of Norman knights landed in Bannow, County Wexford, at the request of Diarmait Mac Murchada, who had been ousted from his seat as the King of Leinster in 1166. Mac Murchada hoped that by pledging his allegiance to King Henry II, he could return to Ireland and reclaim his kingdom, which had been taken from him by his arch enemy, the High King of Ireland, Ruaidri Ua Conchobair.
During their reign over the estate, the Esmonde family constructed two tower houses in Johnstown and Rathlannon. These towers were stone structures that had three or four floors; with the family living on the top floor and servants living on the bottom floor. These sturdy stone towers provided protection against would-be attackers and land raiders. Pictured below is one of the towers that can be seen inside the grounds of Johnstown Castle.
During the mid-1600s, Oliver Cromwell invaded Ireland. During his conquest of the country, he sacked towns such as Wexford and Drogheda and confiscated large amounts of land. Cromwell is an extremely notorious figure in Irish history because of the abhorrent actions of his troops. For example: After the siege of Wexford Town, Cromwell’s army broke loose and ran amok inside the town walls, massacring up to 1500 civilians.
According to the book A topographical dictionary of Ireland, by Samuel Lewis, Oliver Cromwell spent a night on the estate in 1649, prior to his attack on Wexford Town. In his book, Lewis describes how Cromwell used the expansive land around Johnstown Castle to prepare and review his troops.
It was during the Cromwellian years that the Catholic Esmonde family were expelled from County Wexford.
In 1682, the estate was acquired by the Grogan family. In 1798, the owner of the estate, Cornelius Grogan was hanged and beheaded on Wexford Bridge for his part in the 1798 rebellion. Cornelius, who was the eldest son of the family, had become a commissary-general for the United Irishmen, a group of insurgents that had successfully taken over Wexford and established a republican regime. During his trial, Cornelius claimed that his position in the United Irishmen had been overstated and that he had been forced to take a nominal lead in the organisation. After his execution, his estate in Johnstown was seized by the crown.
Twelve years later, in 1810, Cornelius’ youngest brother, John Knox, managed to regain control of Johnstown Castle after he paid the crown court a heavy fine. It was John and his son, Hamilton Knox Grogan, that built the castle, the lake and the expansive gardens that people can visit today, with Kilkenny architect Daniel Robertson designing the castle and parts of the surrounding land. Pictured above is the castle lake, which is roughly five acres in size.
During World War One (1914-1918), German U-boats (underground boats) were active off the coast of County Wexford. In response, the British Royal Naval Air Service stationed a number of Zeppelin air ships at Johnstown Castle. Unfortunately, these air ships were an ineffective tool against Germany’s military submarines, which continued to snoop around the south coast of Ireland until American seaplanes cleared the shipping lanes in February of 1918.
In 1945, Maurice Victor Lakin, who was a descendent of John Grogan, presented the estate as a gift to the Irish nation. A few years later, the Department of Agriculture took charge of Johnstown Castle and its gardens, before setting up an agricultural institute inside its grounds.
Today, the site boasts an agricultural museum, which can be visited, provided you pay an extra charge. If you’re not particularly interested in visiting an agricultural museum, you can choose to take a walk around the castle’s large gardens, which contain beautiful flowers, trees, lakes, statues and historical structures.
