Virginia Defense Force response teams deploy Sept. 23, 2017, to Sandston, Virginia, for Purple Guardian 17, an exercise designed to simulate the support the VDF provides to the Virginia National Guard during state active duty. Teams providing operations center augmentation, high frequency radio communications and incident management assistance as well as mobile communication platform trailers were deployed to Fort Pickett, Sandston, Lynchburg and Culpeper for a scenario-driven evaluation of personnel and equipment to include set up and exercise of organic communications equipment. The Flehmen response is a curling of the lip adopted when examining scents from other animals. It helps expose the vomeronasal organ and draws scent molecules back towards it. Presumably here he's seeing if the females are in oestrus. Looks kinda funny too !!

Our 5-person Go Team in China has arrived in Chengdu to work together with the local authorities, as well as the One Foundation and Save China, to support the many thousands of people who have been affected by last week's earthquake. In case you missed the news, at least 186 people have died and many more have been injured and left homeless after a 6.6-magnitude quake rocked Sichuan in southern China, with the epicentre near Ya'an.
We're sending relief items -- including more than 6,000 hygiene packs, 1500 items of clothing and tents to provide temporary shelter -- to the disaster area, where the weather has been steadily deteriorating, with heavy rains at the moment.
The last major earthquake in Sichuan was in 2008. It killed tens of thousands and left 5,000,000 homeless.
“Repeated earthquakes hit affected people’s minds hard and children, particularly, are most vulnerable,” said Unni Krishnan, Plan’s Head of Disaster Response and Preparedness.
