The "Saint Friday" Church – Drumul Taberei is a relatively new church that replaces the old Sfanta Vineri, demolished by the Communists in 1987.
The patron saint of the church is Saint Pious Parascheva, which we True-belivers celebrates on October 1.4
In Greek "paraschevi" means "Friday", thus in Romanian Sfanta Vineri is a very common patron saint for churches!
This "Saint Friday" church was created after the repeated insistence of the worshipping community, who complained about the lack of a nearby church in the area.
Initially, the priest Nicolae Burlan dissembled an unusedf wooden church from the Vicovul de Jos community in Suceava and reassembled it on a plot of land on Strada Brașov.
The church was consecrated and dedicated to Saint Friday on 26 July 1998.
Since the wooden church turned out to be way too small to allow the over one thousand believers from the area to attend its services the Bucharest City Hall granted a 3000 m2 plot of land in the same location for the construction of a new church because.
On 29 September 2002, the foundation stone for the new church was laid.
Our Most Blessed Teoctist, the worthy Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, accompanied by the Most Holy Sebastian Ilfovean, then vicar of the Archdiocese of Bucharest, performed the service of laying the foundation stone of the new church dedicated to Good Friday and Saint Antim Ivirean.
Im the foundation of the new chrch were burried bricks saved from the former church of Saint Friday, abusively demolished in 1987.
On 11 November 2007 the church was finished, and it was consecrated.

The new church is dedicated to Saint Friday (Saint Pious Parascheva) and to Saint Antim Ivireanul.
From an architectural point of view, it fits into the style prefigured by the "Saint Sophia" churches in Constantinople.
A large central hemispherical dome dominates the spatial composition of the edifice, making it look a bit different form usual Orthodox churches.
The Saint Friday Church – Drumul Taberei is built in the form of an inscribed Greek cross and measures a length of 37 meters, a width of 23 meters, and a height of 33 meters.
The church’s appearance is dominated by a large hemispherical golden dome.
The entrance is via a wide porch with six frontal columns and the vault is made up of 25 semi-arches which rest on metal rings.
Although there is a great deal of activity with the re-signalling project elsewhere most semaphores still remain in daily use. However in this shot you can see the new bright metal light (placed at a horizontal angle) ready to be raised and replace BE39, the small single semaphore to the left. In the background is Network Rail’s resident Stoneblower with Freightliner’s 66529 alongside in the re-fueling lane.
This stop sign is right outside of my apartment building. I might have been glad to miss my bus; that gave me time to get the best shot.

Fortunately the church's loss was insured. The interior of the church contained interesting features including a drop-down pannel to close off a portion of the sanctuary for smaller groups, but steep entrance steps and other features made it difficult to handle caskets. When this church was built, it was popular to hold funerals at home or at graveside. Now that adjacient house lots are owned by the church, there is room for a larger redesigned church with improved functionality while perhaps still preserving the old walls and windows that gave the original building its character.
