After the electric streetcar "lines" were shutdown, they were almost always replaced with internal combustion bus "routes".
Sometimes the bus route was altered from the previous path the streetcar took, due to traffic patterns, ridership, and other details.
Also, the number of the bus route usually, *but not always* kept the same number as the streetcar route before it. Some lines were consolidated, lengthened or truncated, and numbers were retired, new numbers issued.
The bus routes were also issued prefix letters that denoted the borough in which it operated:
B for Brooklyn,
Bx for the Bronx,
M for Manhattan,
Q for Queens and
R for Richmond, which was later changed to S for Staten Island (pretty much because no City resident ever called it "Richmond" - it was Staten Island!)
X was used for Express Bus routes, which almost always were between Manhattan and another borough.
Of these, the Express Buses are my favorite. I'd like to find X29 transfers, as that was the route my mother took when she commuted between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
On July 4, 1986, a one day special issue of bus transfer was issued citywide for the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Statue of Liberty, and carried a single color image of the Statue.
While I don't usually collect from other boroughs other than Brooklyn, several have made their way into my albums over the years...
Printed on cheap pulp paper, the early issues (ca. 1950's to 1980's) were dyed in several colors. I've yet to discern what each color meant, if anything. So far I've seen pink; orange; green; undyed / beige; and blue.
Sometime in the 1980's, they transfers were then standardized to just orange and blue, to denote opposite directions of travel.
Replaced the original with a split image / microprism focusing screen that makes focusing a lot easier. It’s a must for those who use manual focus lenses on Nikon digital SLR cameras.

Cornwallis Statue
Approx 7 years ago, a democratic elected HRM Mayor and Council took a hastily called very quick private vote ? The vote was taken behind closed doors in a City Hall back room in a surprise, unannounced and very private meeting that had excluded citizens of Halifax ? And then, less than 24 hours following this hastily called highly important vote, a crew of city outside workers armed with hand tools and cutting torches was seen frantically speeding in bucket truck vehicles towards Cornwallis Park as they desperately clutched onto their official work orders signed by Mayor Savage instructing them to immediately and without prejudice rip down an iconic Statue that had stood proudly as the most beloved and admired monument in the City up until now, and had always been steadfastly protected, preserved and meticulously maintained by the good citizens of Halifax every day for the last 88 years ? It was also ordered that once this grand Old Testament to Haligonian history was freed of its ancient rusted support bolts and brackets and was no longer secured to its longtime weathered stone pedestal, that the fallen relic must then be completely covered and loaded onto a nearby waiting city flatbed garbage truck for transport to an unknown location where it is to be kept hidden away from all public view ?

Lunenburg NS - Now even the name Queen is deemed inappropriate ? Due to complaining, Lunenburg recently changed the name of Cornwallis Street to Queen Street. Queen was first choice in a town survey taken to select a new street name. On Memorial Day 2017 crews replaced the UP/BNSF double diamond crossing in Rochelle, IL. Here the old double diamond is being moved east across 9th Street on the UP tracks after it was removed from service.

I just replaced my molcajete which had been lost last year during my move back to Texas. It’s basically a mortar and pestle but it is hand carved from volcanic stone. Pretty much any kitchen in Mexico or the Southwestern United States has one.
A molcajete is used to grind/crush spices and vegetables. Crushing spices and such brings a taste to the game that you don’t get by running the same items through a food processor. The crushing process brings out the natural oils in things that you don’t get by running them through a blender. I spent a few hours the other day curing/seasoning my new molcajete as it was brand new. Today was the day to christen it by making a batch of jerky.
I wanted to make a batch of super hot and spicy jerky. So hot and spicy that anyone who tries a piece will rue the day that they met me. So spicy and hot that they will look down at the ground and spit whenever my name is mentioned! The kind of jerky that makes one think, “I am damned for all time!”
My beautiful friends on the jerky group are always asking for recipes, so here it goes. God save us all!:
I procured 14 pounds of meat. That weight would require about 6 cups of liquid. I went with my standard 50/50 mix. I used 3 cups of vinegar (red wine vinegar this time) and I was going to use 3 cups of Dr. Pepper for the other half. However, seeing as I was using a molcajete, I went with Mexican Coca-Cola instead.
I procured some Serrano peppers, plenty of habanero peppers, fresh garlic, and a white onion. All, I believe products of Mexico.
First, I chopped up the white onion and ground it to a paste in the molcajete. After transferring the paste to a container, I diced about 5 or 6 Serranos (keeping the seeds and all the insides. Again, ground to a paste and transferred to a container.
Then, I took about 14 habaneros, cut off the stems, diced, and ground them to a paste. Transferred.
Followed by a handful of fresh garlic roughly diced. Again, crushed to a paste.
I looked in my spice collection and found some mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Threw them into the molcajete and ground them to a slurry. The smell of grinding whole spices is amazing.
After combining the spices with the six cups of liquid, I added about 1/2 cup of brown sugar and Prague curing salt. I was going to add honey, but they had bourbon barrel aged maple syrup at the grocer’s. How could I say no to that? I used about 1/2 cup.
I performed my typical, “Taste a teaspoon” of the completed marinade. It was sweet. It was painfully hot. If eternal damnation has a flavor, this would be it!
I’ll let the meat marinade for about 18 hours and “get ‘er done!”
WARNING: Don’t wear contacts or plan on wearing contacts for a day or so after doing something insane like this! Even after washing my hands I rubbed my forehead and it started to burn. It’s a good burn.
