Many cell phones have suffered an early demise at the hands of my daughter. If cell phones had sentience, I imagined their terror on meeting this new owner.

Recent literature argues that in the US modern technologies replace jobs intensive in routine, codifiable tasks, and wipe out the middle-skilled employment. The evidence whether it is also the case in emerging economies is still scarce. In order to bridge this gap, I analyse the changes in the task content of jobs in 10 Central and Eastern European countries (CEE) between late 1990s and middle 2010s. I find that the CEE countries witnessed rising intensity of non-routine cognitive tasks, and a decreasing intensity of manual tasks. However, most of them experienced a rise in routine cognitive tasks, a trend absent in the most advanced economies. I assess the relative role played by education and technology in these developments. I also analyse the contribution of structural changes and occupational changes. I identify two groups of workers whose jobs depend most on performing routine cognitive tasks, who jointly represent 33% of workers in CEE, and are likely to be affected by future technical progress.

I was reminded about the number of interesting postboxes that have recently disappeared. The example in Painswick had been in the same place since at least 1936, but one day it was taken away. I expect much the same fate myself. (:o)

Built in 1876-1878, this Second Empire and Renaissance Revival-style courthouse was designed by H. E. Myer, and replaced a previous courthouse on the site that was destroyed by fire in 1876. The building features a mansard roof, rusticated stone exterior, limestone trim, bracketed cornices, oval dormers with oxeye windows, stone pilasters at the corners and between bays on the building’s facade, a rusticated stone base, windows on the second floor with circular rose transoms, double-hung windows, a central tower with a golden dome atop the roof and four clock faces on dormers around the dome, an octagonal top, and a wrought iron flagpole and weathervane at the top, pilasters on the sides of the tower separating bays with arched louvers and oxeye windows, and a cornice with modillions. On each facade of the courthouse, there is a central projecting bay with a gabled roof topped with a sculpture, with paired pilasters framing centrally placed bays on each floor with the top bay having “1876” carved on a stone panel, a double window with a complex arched transom, and double entry doors on the first floor with arched transoms and stone trim surrounds, with one-story doric porticoes at each doorway with paired doric columns and pilasters, a rooftop parapet with urns above the columns, and wrought iron railings. The courthouse is surrounded by a landscaped park-like square with a walkway ringing the building, a parking lot at the northeast corner of the building, and multiple monuments adorning the square. The courthouse remains in use for some county court functions, though many government functions have moved to other buildings in Downtown Newark due to the increase in the county’s population and the size of the local government since it was built in the 19th Century. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and is a contributing structure in the Newark Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

This bridge was replaced in 2001. At first, a bridge with two lanes was built along the old bridge. Then, the old bridge was removed and another bridge with two lanes was built. That is the reason why we see two arches in this photo.

replaced a few years ago, and it looks great

The Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light replaced the original lighthouse in this Ohio port in 1925. It is located where the Grand River meets Lake Erie. I was there and ran into another Great Blue Heron who was very interested in these two nice gentlemen who were fishing. He was keeping an eye on me and flew around as I walked past - only to return to the exact same spot!

I just replaced my molcajete which had been lost last year during my move back to Texas. It’s basically a mortar and pestle but it is hand carved from volcanic stone. Pretty much any kitchen in Mexico or the Southwestern United States has one.

A molcajete is used to grind/crush spices and vegetables. Crushing spices and such brings a taste to the game that you don’t get by running the same items through a food processor. The crushing process brings out the natural oils in things that you don’t get by running them through a blender. I spent a few hours the other day curing/seasoning my new molcajete as it was brand new. Today was the day to christen it by making a batch of jerky.

I wanted to make a batch of super hot and spicy jerky. So hot and spicy that anyone who tries a piece will rue the day that they met me. So spicy and hot that they will look down at the ground and spit whenever my name is mentioned! The kind of jerky that makes one think, “I am damned for all time!”

My beautiful friends on the jerky group are always asking for recipes, so here it goes. God save us all!:

I procured 14 pounds of meat. That weight would require about 6 cups of liquid. I went with my standard 50/50 mix. I used 3 cups of vinegar (red wine vinegar this time) and I was going to use 3 cups of Dr. Pepper for the other half. However, seeing as I was using a molcajete, I went with Mexican Coca-Cola instead.

I procured some Serrano peppers, plenty of habanero peppers, fresh garlic, and a white onion. All, I believe products of Mexico.

First, I chopped up the white onion and ground it to a paste in the molcajete. After transferring the paste to a container, I diced about 5 or 6 Serranos (keeping the seeds and all the insides. Again, ground to a paste and transferred to a container.

Then, I took about 14 habaneros, cut off the stems, diced, and ground them to a paste. Transferred.

Followed by a handful of fresh garlic roughly diced. Again, crushed to a paste.

I looked in my spice collection and found some mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Threw them into the molcajete and ground them to a slurry. The smell of grinding whole spices is amazing.

After combining the spices with the six cups of liquid, I added about 1/2 cup of brown sugar and Prague curing salt. I was going to add honey, but they had bourbon barrel aged maple syrup at the grocer’s. How could I say no to that? I used about 1/2 cup.

I performed my typical, “Taste a teaspoon” of the completed marinade. It was sweet. It was painfully hot. If eternal damnation has a flavor, this would be it!

I’ll let the meat marinade for about 18 hours and “get ‘er done!”

WARNING: Don’t wear contacts or plan on wearing contacts for a day or so after doing something insane like this! Even after washing my hands I rubbed my forehead and it started to burn. It’s a good burn.
