Boom Bench
As a part Urban Play 2, Droog Design and curator Scott Burnham have asked NL Architects to bring in ideas for interactive urban interventions. Urban Play is an exhibition and an interactive route along the IJ River. Urban Play believes that “street-level inventiveness, energy and innovation is the future of creativity in the city”. It will be shown as part of this year’s Experimenta Design Amsterdam 2008 (EXDA), the international design festival first organized in Lisbon in 1999.
One of NL’s contributions is the Boom Bench. The Boom Bench is ‘regular’ street furniture with an added value. Since the Walkman and the Boom Box music became mobile. People carry music and play it over headphones, or, more popular every day, over small speakers in their Cell phones or iPods. Especially kids like to go Public, they like to share. The music extends their personality onto the streets. But so far the sound quality of these devices is poor.
In order to boost the capacity the Boom Bench features eight 60-watt co-axial speakers and two subwoofers that can be accessed through Bluetooth. The Boom Bench in a way is a super-sized Docking Station. Connect your player to the amplifier and take control. Now you can play your music with 95 dB high quality sound. A Bass Shaker in the seat transforms the deep sounds into vibrations that enhance the physical sensation of your tunes.
Playing loud music in public will either attract or repel people. As such it will shape the place. Either you start an instant party or mark your territory. The music will become an acoustic sign.
The first Boom Bench will be placed on the North bank of the River IJ, right in the physical center of Amsterdam. The Boom Bench will go online on September 18 for a period of 6 weeks.

These are costume rendering sketches from my past- most were drawn 20 to 30 years ago for classes or shows.
This was a graduate school project to design every aspect of a show, from sets, lights and costumes to blocking and directing. I chose a favorite play, "Private Lives." The action concerns a divorced couple, Amanda and Elyot, both recently remarried, who accidentally book adjoining suites at the same hotel for their honeymoons. The play centers on the two leads and their agonising realisation that they still care for each other. Here is Amanda's 3rd Act traveling suit.

This is a rendering of a Bombardier LRT (i think its called a Flexy) that I rendered to look like a TTC vehicle and placed it on Eglinton somewhere. This was done for Spacing and not the TTC.
The original LRT is from somewhere in Austria, I believe.

Got my snail-generator to export a file format that can be directly imported into Blender, the industry standard GUI for 3D rendering. Development can go faster now, as the built-in renderer yields results in seconds, rather than the hours or days required for ray-tracing.
Former house and shop, now public house. C15, C16 and early C19. Timber-framed, part rendered and parts with original framing exposed. Low pitched slate roof, hipped on SW corner with small gablet. 2 storeys. L plan. Front to High Street is of 2 parts, all with rendering raised above original exposed timber-framed facades. The N part has exposed jetty with 2 brackets and C19 leaded light oriels, on ground and first floors. The S corner block has frieze window of traceried lights (largely a restoration) with panel of original, thin, plank-like chevron bracing. Beneath the exposed jetty are 2 original shop windows and early C20 door opening. The S flank of corner block is jettied (dragon post on corner) with curved arch braces, 2 further drop windows and series of cinquefoil-headed paired windows. A block to the rear, E, is rendered with jetty and 2 exposed brackets and has four 16 paned double hung sashes on the first floor. The ground floor has a 16 paned similar window and 2 paired 12 paned double-hung sashes, a door and a 16 paned casement. Tall C19 stack over E gable end and truncated stack on ridge line, near W end of roof. The SW corner block is a former shop with original entrance from King Street. The N flank originally contained a `high-end-recess' for former hall bench. The adjoining block to N was an early C16 parlour, open framed to shop and with moulded (recessed ogees), bridging joist and girts. The later S flank wall is of C16 panelling with frieze of fluting, 4 consoles and inserted marquetry panel with arch, date 1569 and initials W.A. The rear wall had a post where mouldings are interrupted by leaf stops framing a contemporary rear stack (now much altered). The front ground floor wall of this block originally contained a door opening (to N) and a very wide oriel taking up the rest of the facade. The S wall on the first floor is thought to have similar panelling. EH Listing
and another quick test. Doggy, sculpted out of a sphere. Sculpting was nice, but Sculptris' texturing-module fucked up :D The texture-map was too small and I had some seam-issues (not on the nose - that was my fail).

In macroeconomics, the guns versus butter model is a simple example of the production possibility frontier. It models the relationship between a nation's investment in defense and civilian goods. In this model, a nation has to choose between two options when spending its finite resources. It can buy either guns (invest in defense/military) or butter (invest in production of goods), or a combination of both. This can be seen as an analogy for choices between defense and civilian spending in more complex economies.
In this composition located in Atlanta Georgia, each of the tomahawk missles were inscribed with social expenditures equal to the cost of the weapon.

Damn! Look how hot my computer is running at! This is what happens when I am running POV-Ray renderings. E even have a little lego stand that I prop the corner of my laptop up on to help the cooling fan breathe. Oh well, this is the price of great presentation.
