Products can look pretty realistic. The metal looks perfect on this one. Now I can change the material very easily.
The render on this one was invaluable because there were many rebuilds. This version shows the intake grills in dark gray.
This is the final image of Hal 9000 and beyond! I tweaked the lens to become much more bulbuls, and touched up the color and contrast balance.

I found the Photoworks plugin last night. Easy to use for a quick render. I wish the cast aluminum texture was a bit more randomized, but that's gravy.
I've been wrestling with lofts, too. Most of the complex features on the suit itself will be with them... so practice is good. I think I'm far enough up the learning curve that I'm commited to finishing this giant project with Solidworks, but the really weird stuff on the suit may indeed be best done with 3dsmax.. but I tried to run that on the current lappy, and it is miserable Fail.
