FINALISTA- Concurso tranvia historico de Buenos Aires

In 2003, a suicide barrier was erected along the Bloor Viaduct -- one of the the major throughfares connecting a city cut in half by the Don Valley. At one point, the Prince Edward Viaduct (the official name for the bridge) was apparently the second most fatal standing structure -- a suicide magnet -- ranking behind only the Golden Gate Bridge.

Since 2003, these old lookout binoculars have fallen into disrepair. You can still look through them, but all you get is an eyeful of thick wiring. All the hinges and joints no longer move. It's quite the sad little relic. But better the death of a piece of machinery, I guess...

I ran three bracketed images through Photomatix, using the Detail Enhancer. There is some blurriness and ghosting that can be seen when viewing this image in larger sizes. I didn't use a tripod to set up this shot and Photomatix wasn't able to complete align the images.

Updated Version, large render.

I've been working on my lighting skills, so I decided to copy a photograph and see how close I could get. This one is from the Design Within Reach website, you can see the original here:

The lighting needs some more work. I need to turn up the GI settings since there's some splotchiness going on in the table.

cav666 showed me some awesome images he made with the sss (scattering sub-surface) janino shader. The spheres in the center ring above are using this shader. I still haven't figured out how to tweak its parameters, but it looks quite unlike any other shader I've used.

Fractal renders often throw up these garish palettes. Made me think of these characters from Alice's Adventures.

The figures are drawn by Harry Rountree, a New Zealand illustrator in the decades between the World Wars. I really like his knuckly characters and spiky pen-line.

After I rendered this video I had to transcode it which took another couple of hours. Then of course uploading (twice) took a few more hours. Lots of time goes into editing. Even more time goes into rendering, transcoding, uploading and publishing.
