There are no pretty reflections, just shadows this day, as the Cumbres & Toltec Rotary Outfit claws its way through the last quarter mile toward the Highway 17 Crossing at Coxo, Colorado. During the summer tourist season, this very spot is a popular photo location for rail photographers, looking for an afternoon reflection shot of Train 215 as it descends from Cumbres Pass toward Chama passing the small pond beside the tracks that has been informally named for photographer Otto Perry. Today, the whole area, including the pond in the foreground, is covered with 2-4 feet of snow, depending on where you look. The depth on the track seen here is at the low end of that range. As the train approaches the crossing ahead, it will face drifts of double that depth.
After a few days of mild (for February) weather, accompanied by some very heavy downpours, Friday dawned somewhat chilly, but a least there was a clear sky.
Walking along London's South Bank on my way to work, I thought I'd have a go at getting some sort of reflection shot using one of the many puddles.
So here we have some of the attractive lamp posts reflected in a puddle, with the floodlit St Paul's Cathedral visible in the distance.
Tourists on rented bikes, reflected in a puddle...
As you can see, these tourists look irritated, not because they saw me hunched over a puddle, snapping some wicked reflection shots (ok, maybe a little bit), but rather because they came to the best city in the world, assuming that they could have a wild time here with Sex, Drugs&Rock'n'Roll, only to find out that our government (well, the glorious local chapter of the Right-wing-religious-nutcases in charge) has outlawed anything that might have attracted visitors to Amsterdam in the past.
Even though we do still have some Coffeeshops and a (much smaller) Red-Light-District, you can't buy Magic Mushrooms anymore, you can't smoke a cigarette anywhere, can't drink a beer with your joint and by decision of the major all big dance events must be 100% drug-free...hell, you are not even allowed to stand up if you are drinking a beer on the terrace of a bar...no kidding!
I know it is our own fault, because even though everybody is complaining about the fact that our great leaders have put the bible back into almost every aspect of daily life, when the next election comes up, everybody will vote for Mr. Harry Potter&his gang of whacky weirdos again, for some reason I fail to understand, but I guess that's just me being an idiot :D
Oh yeah, to make up for all these losses, we've turned to killing people across the planet for fun...and they've called Tony Blair the lap dog of G.W. Bush!
Come and visit us before Amsterdam has finished becoming a boring small village that has nothing to offer that you can't find in your own hometown, hurry, they're working fast on the deconstruction of the mystical free city as you might know it from the tales of your forefathers&mothers ;-))
P.s. If I sound bitter, it's probably from all those hours of smoking&drinking in the cold wind outside of all those cool places where me&my friends used to have such good times in ye olde Amsterdam, I'll go and read the bible now, maybe I'll feel better then, haha :D

This is one of my favorite pictures I took all year.

Always carry your camera. This moth, Bella, Rattlebox Moth (Utetheisa ornatrix), was on the fender of my car, and provided a great reflection shot, I think. Thanks for the ID, KevinB.
OK, this is the "normal" reflection shot the same morning from a few feet to the right of the previous post. Comments on which people find more interesting would be most welcome.
That's right - you've got it! Taken at Bristol Zoo - just one of many reflection shots LOL. Have a great Sunday - catching up eventually xxx

I just got my camera back this past weekend so I'm just trying to get back into the groove of this..
We had some rain yesterday but def. not enough for those cool shots that I've been wanting to try so I resulted to this reflection shot from a puddle of water that the little rain left us... (crossing fingers for some more today!) I probably used the wrong setting for this shot in hopes of catching some drops but it never quite panned out the way I pictured it so this will have to do for now. :) Maybe next time.
Used the fabulous frame by Paislee Press, thanks Liz!

First attempt at a night reflection shot, considering I was in a rush, I am pretty happy with this. Just wish they where a few more stars showing, with less cloud cover. A bit flakey like though, which is annoying. Maybe due to the ISO?
ISO - 100
Shutter - 144.0
Aperture - F/16
Zoom - 100mm
(Was taken down in Cayton Bay, looking over the lights of Scarborough, South Bay)
Given how extreme the distortions were in this reflection shot, I decided to have some fun with the processing too and do a few different versions.
This is one of my three favourites. Which do you prefer?

sorry for not being able to visit your streams the last couple of days as i have been a little bit under the weather of late and still trying to recover....will be slowly catching up with your streams and see the images that ive missed the last few days....have a great upcoming weekend flickr friends...
Used a scrap booking alphabet to create the reflection. Shot with 2 SB28 flashes at 1/16. ISO 200, F8. Triggered with PCB cybersyncs.
Taken from inside a roof covered pavement adjacent to Harbourside Shopping Complex, Darling Harbour, Sydney.
In this photo I clicked the shutter too early. I should let the cyclist come closer to me so that I can get his picture in the reflection shot that I tried to make. And before I could take a second shot, he already cycled pass me. But sometimes in life you only have one shot and I had missed it.
After a mid-week tip off (thanks Chris), I managed an early finish on Friday to see this bird. It was impossible to get a really low angle but the still water was perfect for some reflection shots.
Once again the forecast for Saturday morning was for it to be totally overcast. Too risky, then, to travel too far for a low probability of a good sunrise. However my experience of the last few weeks has been that forecast cloud has been less total than anticipated and its been worth a short trip to see what's been going on. As we had a high tide at sunrise this morning there was only really one destination for me - the 15 minute drive to Budleigh Salterton. Once there it was apparent that any activity in the sky was out to sea, and it was too windy for reflection shots near the carpark. I ventured up the White Bridge path a little way so that the sun was rising behind the scots pines and the choppy water was more of a gentle ripple pattern. A standard location for me but one I've not visited for some time.
I realise I only put up a couple of photos from my trip to London back in February. Here are a couple of reflection shots from a calm and sunny day.
I appreciate the Business District of La Defense might not be top of every Paris tourists list of attractions but I'd highly recommend it if you like Contemporary Architecture or even abstract reflection shots like this.
The Crystal Springs Reservoir was formerly a lake called 'San Andres' (later changed to 'San Andreas'). It was named by the first Spaniards in Alta, California. Both the original lake and San Andres Valley (for which the lake was named) have now disappeared under the waters of the Crystal Springs Reservoir. The valley identifies the notorious San Andreas Rift Zone on topographic maps.
The angle of the light and the way it hits the water make for an awesome reflection shot in this photograph....almost as though it had been hand-painted with water colors.
In an odd twist of photographic fate, there was no World of Color show this night due to scheduled maintenence of the platforms. For this reason, they left the fountains in Paradise Park on the entire evening providing a unique opportunity for a cool blue hour reflection shot.
After a beautiful night of clogging I took some reflections shots of the tower at the Waterfront in Bathurst, NB
This greater yellow legs was foraging in some bright light in a receding pond. Perfect for some nice reflection shots!
The rain was starting to clear when we made our way back in the direction of the station to come home. I couldn't resist a reflection shot in this puddle! (And yes, I know it's upside down!)

My one a day today is a reflection shot of nature in an abstract fashion. Its just how I saw it today. Hope you like it.
We're finally starting to warm up so I went out again on Saturday. Got a few reflection shots. Liked the symmetry of these three panes in a downtown coffee shop.
After a rainy day in the park and looking for that next reflection shot, we came across the Sword in the Stone. All photo credit goes to Hamilton as I completely took inspiration from his previous post, but couldn't resist trying this one myself.
It funny because I totally though the shot was with the castle was in the background, but after post processing the photo and then going back to credit link the shot, I realized that his background was with the carousel instead!
I definitely don't tilt as well and I only wish I didn't shoot wide open (at least on the 24-105) at f/4 so the full sword would be in focus, as the pommel is blurred.
Enjoy!
Mono lake tufa reflection shots are cliched by now. I've been to Mono lake multiple times, both for sunrises and sunsets and had been unsuccessful so far to contribute to that collection. The colors never popped when it mattered.
Finally on the day before climbing white mountain peak, we had a "sunset stopover" at Mono lake, and I found the colors I was after. The water was a bit still around some of the Tufas (quite surprisingly). So there I was, fine tuning the composition, waiting for the moment, talking to the kid (while nervously peeking at the stone in his hand) who was curious as to what on earth I was shooting in the fly infested shore , and lo-behold he went ahead and popped it into the lake and quiped, "Isn't it beautiful ?" :o
The kid has been missing ever since. If you see a limb sticking out of the water in the frame, it's just a piece of tufa playing on your imaginations.
I however managed to find a spot where the water was still calm and the tufas were lit up by the fading rays from the sun. The sky in the background was already being painted on by belt of venus.
So here's to another elusive shot in the bucket list.

Interesting reflection shot downtown. I scanned this later and was impressed with the clarity of the lens in this lighting. Downtown scenes shot with Voigtlander Bessa T and testing cheap body cap fixed focus pancake lens 32mm f/10. Did I say cheap? Shot on Kentmere 100 at ISO 100 and stand developed in PA Rodinal for 60 minutes. Fixed for 5 minutes in Ilford Hypam rapid 1:4. Then rinsed and stuff. This lens is not bad when lit (properly) from behind or out of direct sunlight. Sunlight brings in flares and artifacts which are not necessarily unpleasing.
