a perfectly still Fox River makes for a perfect reflection shot in McHenry Shores/ McHenry Dam from last fall season...processed this is an HDR image to bring out more details and make the colors pop a bit more....pls. View On Black

- www.kevin-palmer.com - Hopefully this shot doesn't make your brain hurt. Sometimes I like to flip reflections shots. A layer of water on top of this frozen pond created a mirror, though I had to put my camera at ground level to capture it.

My friend Tracey and I wanted to get a shot of the eclipse. We were planning to try to get a reflection shot at Baulking Lake, but when it came to it, the cloud present acted as a filter, allowing us to point our cameras, if not our eyes, upwards. Very narrow aperture to avoid too much light entering the camera! The birds didn't go as quiet as I remember them doing back in 1999 - maybe water birds are different?

Very strange light for 9.30am in March!

Thought i would jump on the bandwagon and post an impossible Sydney Harbour reflection shot :)

This is a popular spot to photograph the Tetons. Schwabacher Pond is your classic reflection shot. The water in this pond lies down like glass in the morning. I personally like to shoot the Tetons in the month of July. During this time you still see snow on the peaks. To me shooting a mountian without snow is like shooting the ocean under a clear blue sky. Its boring!! The snow gives the peaks that extra added warm glow of alpen color sunrise. Please look at my profile for print information and workshop opportunities.

Dropped lucky finally with my nemesis :)

Photographed the same morning of the awesome sunrise I was lucky enough to see, just before I managed some reflection shots of Snowdon...fair to say this was probably the best morning of photography I have ever had :)

Took the long way home and stopped by Reflection Lakes in Mt Rainier National Park. Not used to getting reflection shots this late in the day!

A colorful sunset over a lake tucked deep into the wilderness of Sequoia National Park. Anyone recognize the lake from a previous post of mine?

I just won a major photo contest on campus and the prize was large enough to help me fund a massive system upgrade. I finally have a carbon fiber tripod, a 5D Mark II, and the 16-35II. I couldn't be more excited to play with them in the field :)

It's almost backpacking season again... I'm headed out into the wild over Memorial Day!! So excited!

Have a great week, everybody!

I mildly overexposed these shots of the railway lines, so have played with the levels a bit to bring out the textural details. I loved the way that the water between the tracks felt metallic, in contrast to the reflection shots in the harbour, and that way that the inexorable pull of the light symbolises everything that was glorious about the day.

The "Furball" (CN's Freeport to Rockford turn, that is, it heads from Freeport, to Rockford, switches cars in Rockford, then heads back to Freeport) has a GP-40 Illinois Central engine leading it this week. I was unable to get out the door early enough to see it come into Rockford or switch there, but I did get it coming through Seward on this windy and much cooler day (we hit 93 the day before; it was only in the 60s here during the 1 PM hour). I still managed to pull off a reflection shot of it going by the old Steward depot, long-hood forward. I almost wanted to go black and white on this, but I think they had color film back in the 1980s. ;-) Anyway, dig the number boards: hand drawn on both ends of the train!

I got to the middle lake and was hoping for calm weather for some reflection shots but sadly not, but it is such a nice place to be, this was the beginning of my day i then decided to climb wind ridge on what can only be described as a very windy day.

A gray early morning shot of fall foliage along the shore of the Wedge Pond with the double summits of Mt. Kidd above.

I know, I shoot a lot of lake reflection shots. Love these moments.

Thank you for taking a look. Always appreciated!

The sky was gray and the water was starting to freeze but we were all able to get a reflection shot of the Mendenhall Glacier at sunrise.

The summer is coming to an end.

I will return....

I rode a bus to Wonder Lake in hopes the mountain would be out and I could get some reflection shots of it. The park really put a show on for me !! What a wonderful trip to the end of the park road :)

I am happy with the softness of this ..... very peaceful with the morning fog rising above the water....

The comet shines over Lake Henshaw in San Diego County, California on the night of July 21, 2020. Unlike my post of this comet about a month ago, there is no reflection of the comet in the water. Still, I recently decided I like this shot regardless.

I shot this with a Canon EOS R and Canon 50mm lens. I'd been wanting to get a reflection shot of the comet and suddenly I remembered Lake Henshaw. The light pollution in the area is quite low and lake isn't too far of a drive from my home in Ramona.

C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) or Comet NEOWISE is a retrograde comet with a near-parabolic orbit discovered on March 27, 2020, by astronomers during the NEOWISE mission of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) space telescope. At that time, it was a 18th-magnitude comet, located 2 AU (300 million km; 190 million mi) away from the Sun and 1.7 AU (250 million km; 160 million mi) away from Earth.

Lake Henshaw is a Reservoir in San Diego County, California at the southeast base of Palomar Mountain, approximately 70 miles (110 km) northeast of San Diego, California and 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Los Angeles.

The lake covers approximately 1,140 acres (460 ha) and holds 55,000 acre feet (68,000,000 m3) of water when full (lowered in 1978 from its original capacity of 203,581 acre feet (251,113,000 m3) out of earthquake concerns), in addition to groundwater stored in its local basin. It drains an area of 207 square miles (540 km2) square miles at the source of the San Luis Rey River.

The lake was constructed in 1923 with the building of Henshaw Dam, an earth dam 123 feet (37 m) tall and 650 feet (200 m) long. It is owned by the Vista Irrigation District and used primarily for agricultural irrigation.

Obligatory egret-landing-on-its-reflection shot, once I finally managed to capture it. It's only taken me a zillion trips to the place.

2014 North And South Block Panorama Reflection Shot...

4020 307 took us by surprise as we expected a freight in the opposite direction so a quick crouch in the gutter and a grab reflection shot as it rumbles over Handelskai was the order of the day.

One more reflection shot.

Reflection of one of the benches along the dam caught my eye. A cedar fence and the woods behind it also in the reflection. Shot from a distance with my 400mm.

Sacramento County’s Mather Field is an exceptional example of a wetland ecosystem unique in California; every spring, this flat topography explodes with wildflowers. While we didn’t experience any vernal pools during our visit here (I was hoping for some reflection shots), and the volume of flowers less than past, wetter years, the fields of bright yellow “Frying Pan Poppies”, native to California’s Central Valley and smaller than their California Poppy cousins, made for an enjoyable outing during the pandemic.

I took this mage at Lake Pinaroo which is located in the Sturt National Park near Tibooburra in the north-west corner of NSW, Australia. I have just returned from an 8 day photographic shoot with an equally mad shooting mate where we travelled 5,000km and had 13 shoots.

We stopped at this Lake for a couple of days and it was beautiful. We followed on the heels of another mate who went a month before and gave us some good tips!

I don't normally do reflection shots but well had to make an exception this time - taken early sunrise and if you look hard you can see the birds sleeping in the trees. The light lasted for but a moment in time and I had to work fast to take advantage of it.

I am an amateur photographer based in Sydney who loves, exploring and shooting sea and landscapes in different areas in the company of good mates.

Inspired by a memorable image from the camera of Nigel Power, which features in the 50 Years of Phoenix book:

www.flickr.com/photos/58449051@N08/47104531611/

Nigel's image of a red Class 60 on discharged oil tanks bound for Robeston around 4 years ago stuck in my memory. So the 1Z10 trip to South Wales provided the opportunity to try out the reflection shot in this tired old office block on the east bank of the Usk, and just south of the approach to Newport station.

As Nigel commented at the time, not a straightforward image to secure, it involved hanging over the fourth floor car park wall, holding the camera as low as possible and using live view and the flip out screen.

An unidentified 3 car class 170 in TfW livery crosses the Usk on a bright afternoon, 27.10.22.

Reflection shot of Wedge Pond in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada.

A family of Black-crowned Night Herons was enjoying the warmth of the morning sun, but was too far away for me to get a detailed shot. So I'm posting one of the standard pretty reflection shots.

Surrealism as nothing more than a different perspective on reality ... the work of Sol LeWitt as photographed as a window reflection. Shot with the Olympus E-5 at MASS MoCA.

Shot with the Olympus E-5, Olympus Zuiko 14-35 f2.0 lens, at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. This is not the art on display but rather the artistic elements of this museum as I see them through the eye of the photographer.

The COVID-19 files | Scene captured during a short holiday break in the Dutch Veluwe region: reflection shot of the St. Hubertus hunting lodge in the Hoge Veluwe National Park.

This was the scene as the sun broke out. A cloud that was trying to mimic Mount Banahaw made the scene un-appealing for a reflection shot so I decided to take my chances in the murky waters. I really hope I wouldn't be doing that again, my companions legs were all itching and it was good that I had a bottle of alcohol to wash my legs down upon getting upshore. (Sampaloc Lake, San Pablo Philippines facing Mt Banahaw in vertical orientation)

. . . The Super Moon was significantly brighter than a normal full moon last night! On the way home, I stopped at the Marina to get this reflection shot! It was almost too windy on the West Bay to see it.

Have a good week Facebook, Flickr, and 500px friends!

3/30/2020 took this beautiful reflection shot of CP 8906 leading CP 493 (Merchandise) on the Minnesota Hinckley Subdivision. Video will be uploaded to the Real Railfan YouTube Channel soon, stay tuned!

My first time shooting NSM was just before the birth of Berk, my oldest kid, in the fall of 2010; little did I know I wouldn't return until I had two sons to bring along!

When I foam with the boys, I try to setup a pair of cameras with shutter release cables so they can each bag a shot. In this instance, Lucas (4) was manning the telephoto setup, while Berk (5) was handling the wider angle reflection shot here. They did surprisingly well spending 6ish hours in the van for a handful of shots in the north woods.

The Milky Way passes over a creepy abandoned house in the mercury mining ghost town of New Idria, CA. For the sky watchers, that brightest object is Mars on the lower left sky and Saturn along the centerline. Just out of frame to the right was Jupiter. All three planets were in a line. Sky is a Bortle-2.

Last night's original plan was to get a reflection shot from San Luis Reservoir in Merced county but I could no longer wait for the heavy wind gusts to die down; instead, I hatched a plan B, driving south another 2 hours on a lonely road, so quiet, I never saw another vehicle nor person anywhere.

Arriving at the New Idria mining town, it was far too dark to do very effective scouting since I couldn't see much beyond the range of my headlamp. I gravitated toward this abandoned residence in a row of houses and got to work. I applied lighting using a small LED panel. The "LLLS: low level lighting on a stick" rides again!

Lens is the DFA 25mm f/4 on the 645Z. EXIF is inaccurate here but the long exposure was for my light painting(f/7.1 ISO 1,000) and then I median blended 25 star frames that were 15sec each @f/5 ISO 10,000 to achieve some sky noise reduction.

Thanks for visiting

Honestly, I love the Sound of Music and I have seen it so many times I have lost count.

But, give me mountain scenery and "Climb every Mountain", is the first thing that pops into this overactive brain of mine.

This photo is my particular favourite, okay, okay, all the photos I took on this trip are my faves!

I just like the between seasons look. The deep, rich colours of Autumn and the stark mono's of Winter.

About half a mile away was another lake which has given me some lovely reflection shots and it was ice free. This lake was rapidly icing over and before my eyes as well so the surface looked like a cracked mirror.

I think its the first time I have been on a road trip where every twist and turn of the road has provided an entirely different scene.

We are going over again next month, may as well take advantage of the incredibly cheap Winter deals that the ferries are offering!

WETLANDS PARK SUNRISE

Wanted to get some water reflection shots but when I got to the park before 6am this is what I was greeted with.

Jumping spider reflection shot! This spider was upon my motorcycle fuel tank! Which was easy to get the reflection shot!

A nighttime shot of Cologne’s Hohenzollern Bridge and the glowing Dom, beautifully reflected in the calm Rhine River.

One positive thing to be said about Eighties architecture, there's usually some good reflection shots to be had.

Very slowly recovering from my recent trip to Glacier National Park and a scouting trip to the Palouse. Haven't looked at many of my photos yet, but I remembered this photo that I took on the first morning at Many Glacier Hotel. It looked great on the LCD of my Fuji but I knew better than to get too excited until I could view it on my iMac. Suffice to say, it still looked pretty good.

We had a great sunrise and Mount Grinnell was bathed in the orange light of the Golden Hour. I am a sucker for reflections shots and look for them wherever I go. Many times, if you follow me around when shooting, you will spot me lying flat on the ground to get the most of the reflection. I think that my buddy, Jeff Clow, has taken more shots of me in that position than I want. In any case, I was able to get the whole puddle filled with Grinnell's peak. I was really lucky to have found this spot as the wind was really kicking up, making the rest of Swiftcurrent Lake extremely rippled. The stones around the puddle made a terrific barrier so that the wind did not affect it.

Another shot of the chapel - all that's left of the old hospital. You can see how much rain we've been having by the many muddy puddles there! An opportunity to get a reflection shot!
