Greater Manchester Police officers and staff at Rochdale have remembered a fallen officer with opening of The Ray Codling Memorial Library.
They have created a peaceful area to come to relax and reflect. Holding a variety of books and information with comfy sofas, this tranquil area has been created in the memory of Inspector Ray Codling.
On 14 September 1989, Sergeant Jim Bowden and Ray, aged 49, were responding to the call of a suspicious driver at Birch motorway service station near Heywood.
The officers approached a man they saw acting suspiciously. The man drew both a knife and a pistol. A struggle followed and the man fired at both of them.
Ray was shot twice and killed in the seemingly unprovoked attack. The man ran away and Sergeant Bowden gave chase before the man turned and shot him in the leg.
The shooter Anthony Hughes from Baguley later killed himself before he could be arrested, leaving his motive for the murder unknown.
There is also a memorial stone to Inspector Codling at Birch motorway service station.
The library was officially opened by Ray’s widow Linda, and Jim Bowden. Rochadale’s police commander Chief Superintendent Chris Sykes represented the Force.

Manta rays are large rays belonging to the genus Manta. The larger species, M. birostris, reaches 7 m in width while the smaller, M. alfredi, reaches 5.5 m. We know very little about the manta ray, they are a mystery, because they can't live in an aquarium. The greatest danger to the manta ray is the fishing harpoon. But the manta rays are still a really mystery.

This is the x-ray of my right collarbone a week ago. Bike accident coming home from school. Hit a pothole and went over the handlebars.
I think it's kinda cool that you can take home your x rays these days. Digital imaging ftw!
Update: I now have a metal pin in my shoulder, where it will stay until Christmas. The bones should've healed by then.
Update 2: The pin is out and it's ginormous!

The village of Ray is splits between Indiana and Michigan. The image here was made from aboard an excursion train on the Indiana Northeastern Railroad that is crossing the state line. The ancestry of the rail line is New York Central.
