A friend said today "Artists live on their nerves." By which he meant their work... their life... is to literally "put themselves out there." And take whatever comes back in return... whether they like it or not. Which is why (we agreed) art is not always healthy for the faint of heart... or mind... or ego.

We were talking about George Gordienko.. who died a bitter man, believing that his art had not been appreciated.

It made me feel very glad that I am not an artist. That I never felt that irresistable "gotta do this" calling-type thing that so many artsy people seem to have experienced. Like the friend of a friend who's bound and determined to make a life in music... notwithstanding the fact that she's getting into middle age, and still making her living as a waitress, etc.

Imagine the burden that must be. To feel that you were "meant" to create... and to love that more than anything... and to want to put your whole self into it... even if, year after year, nothing at all comes back. I can't help thinking that these folks are missing out... because... in giving themselves to one thing so completely, they're closed to everything else.

All I ever wanted was to be self-sufficient (to the extent that we can be in today's world) and to not hate what I do for money... and to be free, in my own time, to explore anything and everything that interests me.

So... I dunno if there's a point to this. Just counting blessings, I suppose. And taking my metaphorical hat off to artists everywhere. I hope that they get back enough from within themselves, through the joy of creation, to not always need external validation.

Seriously underexposed picture of a clear puddle with the sun shining in it.

Nature does it best.

A small selection of some frozen puddle details from last weekend.

Unedited shot of tourists eating fries in Amsterdam, reflected in a puddle. Taken with my Sony HX1. No editing, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :)

The tourists come to Amsterdam for many reasons (Sex, Drugs and Rock'n Roll), one of them are the delicious fries that you can eat in the best city in the world. If they're unlucky enough, they might show up in one of my puddle pictures while enjoying their greasy, yummie snack. These ladies were clearly not distracted enough by all the fat pumping through their veins after consuming their Patatje and discovered that I was shooting them, even though I was mostly submerged in the puddle...I guess I'll have to try harder the next time, lol ;-D

Some spam of my own dolls at PUDDLE this year.

The Friday Night Tea Party in the lobby area is a time to enjoy some tea and admire dolls. There's also some informal selling to indulge in.

on the top of a new patio table.

I am sure when it is a few weeks old, the water will no longer sit on it like this.

It's a lot of fun to walk around and look at everyone's dolls. I enjoy seeing how people customize them. But it's also neat to see some of the rarer dolls or brand new ones in person.

Ava, splashing in a little puddle that turned out to be surprisingly muddy. I had to rinse off her boots when we got home. (I carefully dipped them in the buckets of rain water that were in our back yard.)
