Finally the clouds broke and the early morning sun gave the Fall Color trees along Powers Marine Park shoreline the extra bit of pop I had come to capture; Willamette River, Portland, OR Used The Photographer's Ephemeris setup for this photo to be there with a nice strong sidelight on the trees. Sparks from the torch cutters were so well controlled - see how few make it below the spark catcher mounted below the orange crane basket - that I had to combine 13 of the sparkiest exposures to get enough sparks to make the photo above. These were the penultimate cuts, the last cuts will be along the pink line on the bottom stringer above. As of 3PM Thursday the plan for Friday June 3rd is to complete the last cuts early in the morning, lower the truss section onto the barge below at the rate of 20' per hour using jacks mounted above the trusses. Watch the progress at Sellwood Bridge webcam page. NB47266-305

This past weekend they installed the rest of the concrete girders for the East Approach; it's informative to be able to see the construction progress this close-up. It was only a couple of months ago that they were in the process of tearing down the last of the old approach; only six months to go before the bridge is complete. NB46529-35

The trees and the wonderful green color and how it contrasted with the blue hour sky is what got me to stop here. While taking this photo a group of skateboarders arrived and as they left one made this gesture with his skateboard as he faced the wall of the building adding to the surreal feel of the scene. With the cofferdam (see first comment below) removed the partially stained angel wings - the concrete structures the arches are attached to and are supported by - are revealed. Eventually all the concrete supports will be stained to match and as the steel arches and supports weather they will become closer in color. NB41710

Some big changes are coming in the first two weeks of July: the final section of old bridge truss is scheduled to come down ~ July 12, 2016, the westside multi-use path from the northside of the bridge to SW Miles Place is scheduled to open July 5th offering some new views of the bridge, removal of the work bridge pilings is set to begin on that day too, major concrete pours on the east approach and more. Found this nice series of alignments between the rising crescent moon and the Tilikum Crossing bridge in Friday 9/11/2015 at 5:33AM The Photographer's Ephemeris setup. The changes between this image and the one taken two days earlier include: the aesthetic lighting is on and tied to the state of the river, a layer of smoke reddens the two day older moon considerably more here, and the beautiful stainless steel lettering of the bridge name has been applied to the south (right) tower pylon. Around midday now the sun gets up high enough in the sky to be able to see/place it behind the top of a pylon while standing on the Tilikum Crossing bridge; when it's lower in the sky you have to find a place off the bridge to place it similarly. It's interesting how the perspective from the point of view above makes the halo appear much smaller than the bridge, where as from a location off the bridge (see first comment below) the halo appears almost as large as than the whole span of the bridge. After decades of wondering why this stone seemed so familiar renowned Stonehenge arche-ge-ologist Susan Sarsen has recently confirmed that this stone is the right size, shape, age and composition to be one of the missing cap-stones (also called lintels) from Stonehenge. Since it's so far away from Stonehenge, it's easy to understand why no one would even suspect that it came from there; but how it came to be here in at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, in Portland, OR is now perhaps one of the largest mysteries of Stonehenge. And it does explain why local Druids have been drawn to celebrate here each Spring - see photos in first comment below. NB44499
