ABOUT THIS IMAGE

The Bridge

On my Road/ Photo Trip I came upon many lucky surprises. This was one of them. Located in the Lady Bird Johnson Grove, I had just finished my walk in the grove and on the way back I came upon this bridge. I immediately recognized it because Alice Cahill a fantastic photographer and friend who is also in The Gallery at Marina Square with me has made this same image, although in color. Alice's image is Tremendous and I was hesitant on making my own image. I did. I had no idea this was the same place she had been. I saw a road that led to a fog shrouded forest and I took it.

have been in this pattern since April 2015, but will be shifting eastward (away from camera) in mid-to-late November, and to the new bridge in early Spring of 2016. NB41629-44

Throughout the ages bridges have been plagued by trolls, and the digital age is no exception with trolls creeping in and corroding sensors and electronics, knocking photography back a hundred years or more right before your eyes. I had hoped that since the bridge was only a few months old that perhaps the trolls might not have settled in, but I was wrong and without having any first born to pay as ransom I'm stuck with this damaged sensor. From an otherwise fun evening out with the PDXNightowls. NB43023

Went down to Powers Marine Park to catch the Christmas Ships as they headed up river to Milwaukie; turned out it was a less than ideal location this year - next year when the new bridge is complete and the arches are lit it could be a really nice location. But as often happens when going out to photograph one thing, something even more interesting appears, in this case the Portland Spirit came by casting some subtle light onto the new bridge as it passed underneath. Best when viewed in the lightbox. NB42084-90

Do I really want to go out? It's cold and breezy; and a lot of standing around waiting for the few short minutes of photography each hour. Those are the questions that run thru my mind each year; but somehow every year manage to find a new (for me) viewpoint, and every slight change in shutter speed changes how the train will look with each new sequence of exposures. And the SP4449 is back pulling the train this year! While it may be cold and breezy its dry and there's still some fall color in the trees which will be gone when the December runs of the train begin. So get out on Saturday 11/28 while the weather is still great! Click here for much more about photographing the Holiday Express. NB41856-61

On opening day of the TriMet Orange Line and Tilikum Crossing bridge I took advantage of the free tram rides to explore the unique views (see first comment below) of the Tilikum Crossing bridge it offers. Because the best views are near the bottom of the run and the tram swings strongly after crossing the tram tower, it's best to take photos on the downward journey of the tram. The windows of the tram cabin are highly curved so stand close to minimize reflections which are caused by light colored areas and clothing of people inside the tram. Do NOT use a polarizer, the windows are NOT glass and you can get very strong color distortions. The tram is a fair distance from the bridge so use a telephoto zoom that covers the 70-200mm range. Use The Photographer's Ephemeris to plan sun and shadows for your photography, in this series of photos the sun was almost exactly 90º relative to the long axis of the bridge providing a nice side light and shadows across the deck of the bridge. The tram journey is only a few minutes long, and views of the bridge are near the bottom just before you get to the tram tower, so be ready to take bursts of shots on each tram ride. Tram rides are free on the downward journey, and $4.50 on the upward journey; or buy a TriMet day pass for $5 and use the streetcar, light rail or bus (from the CLSB), and #8 bus line to return to the upper tram terminal. Be sure to check the tram schedule/info page before you go. More locations and tips for photographing the bridge. NB39155

A $5 TriMet day pass covered all my bus, streetcar, and light rail travel that I used to get down to and around town on this fun surprise snow day. Sure beats worrying about icy roads, other drivers, or trying to park, all for less than the cost of parking alone; and each ride was a great place to get warmed up between shots. i6s+3959

In preparation for the Perseid Meteor Outburst Night of August 11-12, 2016 I did some reading at the very informative Lonely Speck website and based on some of what I learned there reworked this photograph from 2008. Changes to the processing of the original version include: applying lens profile corrections and some additional chroma correction to remove the blue halos from around the brighter stars, noise correction in both LR and Photoshop, using Fisheye-Hemi and PS LensCorrection filters to give the image a more natural perspective, bringing up a lot more shadow detail, and reframing the image to include all of Auriga's reflection at the bottom. I really like how there's less noise and more faint star detail in the new version. And I'm really looking forward to trying some of the photography techniques I read about at Lonely Speck…

In addition to the Mikly-way and two meteors you can also see: the Pleiades, Hyades, Andromeda Galaxy, The Double Cluster and more (see notes).

Despite the moon being 35º degrees above the horizon (The Photographer's Ephemeris Setup 4/20/2016 11:18PM) it still provided nice backlight on the river behind the Sellwood Bridge; compare with this photo from 2012 when an 82% lit moon was 60º to the left. Looking forward to repeating this photo again in August by when the old bridge and work piers should be removed; e.g. on August 15, 2016 when an even lower 94% lit moon will again be in line with the bridge from this location on Terwilliger Blvd. NB45606

Fun to compare the contrasting styles of the two bridges which have the same top deck line but two completely different styles of construction; see also the side by side photo from April 2016 in first comment below. 7277,52359
