Part of a series of iPhone ScanCamera slit-scans of the carnival amusement thrill ride called the Zipper. Here the slit was moving Right to Left. The asymmetry of the Zipper (versus for example the circular symmetry of the FerrisWheel ) yields a much greater variety of scan outcomes and therefore is more fun to slit-scan photograph. I really like how the streetcar lighttrails mix with the graphics of the SW 3rd &Harrison TriMet streetcar station canopy. From a fun evening out with PDXNightowls: Jim «JP» Hansen, Greg Pepion and David Wang. NB45872-74
Back on May 7, 2012 using the construction cranes as guides is when I first noticed that Mt Saint Helens would be nicely placed between the two towers of the new bridge. Although I've photographed this a number of times since then (see first comment below), this is the first time since it opened, and snow has returned to and the sky was clear enough to see the top of Mt Saint Helens, that I made it back to the Ross Island bridge to re-take this composition. Photographing the Tilikum Crossing the past 4+ years has been a very rewarding experience, and I'm looking forward to photographing it for many more years to come. The Photographer's Ephemeris Setup for this photo. Tips and locations for photographing the bridge. NB42708,09,17

Always a bit nerve-wracking holding the phone over the edge of a bridge and rotating it thru a 180º+ degrees; but worth it for such a fun result despite the many stitching flaws the iPhone made. i6s+5520
Traffic patterns at the west end of the bridge changed a few times during the various phases of construction, see the progression via photo/links in first comment below. Not visible above are the wide bike lanes on both sides of the bridge that connect to the new multi-use path that runs under the bridge and heads north to Willamette Park joining the path there that continues into the South Waterfront; a huge improvement over the old very narrow single sidewalk on just the northside of the old bridge and the narrow path that went along the edge of Highway 43th. NB52641-69
Pop Yours! Another unexpected surprise, stumbled upon this neon sign (see first comment below) during the June 3rd PDXNightowls photowalk; next photowalk Friday July 1st. NB47539e3 - Happy Sliders Sunday!

The fully eclipsed moon was very dim as it rose out of the evening gloam - this is very close to how it appeared in binoculars - to the naked eye it was even dimmer; so it ended up being a bit higher between the pylons of the north tower than I had hoped to catch it; still I love the contrast between the deep blood orange of the moon, the deep blue hour sky, and the green phase of the aesthetic lighting on the bridge. The Photographer's Ephemeris setup for this photograph. Best when viewed of the eclipse viewing room. See all six photos from the 2015 Eclipse series. 7:34PM PDT Moon Alt 5.9º NB40278
When I arrived you couldn't see across the river, even the closer West tower was barely visible (top image); but in just eight minutes the fog lifted slightly (bottom image) destroying the wonderful isolation of foreground and background the scene had started with for the rest of the morning… NB40536,70
Spiral Galaxy SP 4449 - a companion to our own Milky Way galaxy - was recently discovered using the new steampunk telescope at the Obolensky Observatory located in the Vernian Sea. View the spiral arms of steam and lights up close. NB52105 - Happy Sliders Sunday!
overlooking the Cavalia tents set up in the South Waterfront of Portland, OR. Twilight into night blend. Fun to compare the above with the 2010 view before CLSB and Tilikum Crossing were built, see first comment below. One of the nicer north/downriver side views of the Sellwood Bridge is from the OHSU Tram; there's only about a 30sec window where its visible so you have to be ready with the your telephoto lens mounted and take a burst of shots. NB39185

Finally the clouds broke and the early morning sun gave the Fall Color trees along Powers Marine Park shoreline the extra bit of pop I had come to capture; Willamette River, Portland, OR Used The Photographer's Ephemeris setup for this photo to be there with a nice strong sidelight on the trees. Sparks from the torch cutters were so well controlled - see how few make it below the spark catcher mounted below the orange crane basket - that I had to combine 13 of the sparkiest exposures to get enough sparks to make the photo above. These were the penultimate cuts, the last cuts will be along the pink line on the bottom stringer above. As of 3PM Thursday the plan for Friday June 3rd is to complete the last cuts early in the morning, lower the truss section onto the barge below at the rate of 20' per hour using jacks mounted above the trusses. Watch the progress at Sellwood Bridge webcam page. NB47266-305
- the bottom of which was about shoulder height - was this giant creepy clown face. One of the fun surprises on the May 6th SE PDX PhotoWalk P1. Can you guess where in PDX this is? Creepiest when viewed on black. NB54641

This past weekend they installed the rest of the concrete girders for the East Approach; it's informative to be able to see the construction progress this close-up. It was only a couple of months ago that they were in the process of tearing down the last of the old approach; only six months to go before the bridge is complete. NB46529-35

The trees and the wonderful green color and how it contrasted with the blue hour sky is what got me to stop here. While taking this photo a group of skateboarders arrived and as they left one made this gesture with his skateboard as he faced the wall of the building adding to the surreal feel of the scene. Can you guess where in PDX this is? NB54522
