When choosing a location to photograph an eclipse I always look for a subject to pair with the moon, something that will add interest and a sense of scale. Easy for this eclipse, since the moon rose partially eclipsed and was low in the sky throughout totality.

Next I look for a relatively nearby subject with a location where it will be easy to move towards/away along, and side-to-side across, the line between moon and camera. Moving forward and backward changes the relative size of the subject and moon, and how high or low above the subject it is, moving side-to-side let's you position the moon horizontally relative to the subject. I look for a nearby subject because small changes in distance relative to it changes the apparent height, size, and position relative to the moon much more quickly, than for a far away subject such as Mt Hood from Portland where you have to move much farther than time allows to truly affect their relative size and orientation relationships.

In Portland bridges often make great subjects that meet all these criteria and the river often adds interesting reflection opportunities as well. Tall buildings seem like good candidates but opportunities to move both towards and away and side to side are often compromised by other buildings in the area blocking both the view and or freedom of movement… more location scouting and more careful planning with The Photographer's Ephemeris or PhotoPills is required.

For this eclipse I chose the Tilikum Crossing vs say the Steel Bridge because the west shoreline near it provided a wider latitude of movement across both axes relative to the bridge, allowing me to capture the moon near the East Tower and then chase it across the whole width of the bridge as totality progressed; I also liked that the green phase of the bridge's aesthetic lighting current yellow-green color cycle would contrast nicely with the orange of the eclipsed moon, and the opportunity to catch bridge traffic and people along with the moon was another plus.

Between all the freedom of movement and changing lens focal lengths I was able to get a wide variety of comps during the 1h12m of totality, and had some luck with light rail trains and people on the bridge too… Best when viewed from the eclipse viewing room. 7:57PM PDT Moon Alt 9.8º NB40314

Most of the deck from the east span of the old bridge has been removed (see next two images). After the rest of the deck has been removed by sometime in April; during May and June the four truss spans will be lowered by crane one at a time onto a barge on the river below. See full schedule of remaining work, most items on that schedule are photographic opportunities… 44562,64,67,70

Fog can change quickly, compare with this photo taken only 15 minutes earlier, and this photo taken a few days later on clear night. From the floating dock by the OMSI submarine - from where this photo was taken - you could just barely see the very brightest lights across the river barely peaking through the fog, the CLSB and MAX station there were completely hidden by the fog. This early abstract by Jackson Pollock shows the deep influence that fireworks had on his later work; simply crop out the center of this image and you'll see how indistinguishable it is from his later work; experience the full depth of the paint in the splatter-box view.
