On the river are barges with materials from the now mostly removed work piers and in the distance the West Truss that was cut and lowered onto another barge on June 17th. At right are the T-shaped piers for a pedestrian/bike ramp that will go over over the trolley tracks and under the main bridge to the regional trail that will run from Powers Marine Park to Willamette Park. The tree and lamppost are both vertical and parallel to each other, but when imaged using an ultra wide or fisheye lens by simply tilting the camera back 45º can be made to appear as though they are at right angles to each other. If you block the lamppost from view it looks like any other photo taken with the camera pointing forwards, or if you cover the bottom half of the photo it looks like the camera is facing up, of course the reality is both - the bottom of image is facing forward while the top is facing straight up, and with every angle in between them. The four jacks - two at each end of this section of bridge truss - that will be used this week to lower this section of bridge truss to a barge that will be located below it. Under the plastic tarps are the large multi-stranded cables that will support the truss as it gets lowered. See and read more about the process in the DJC article "Photos: Old Sellwood Bridge span to be removed article" and in the Sellwood Bridge Field Work Notice - May 27, 2016 at Sellwood Bridge .org. i6s+5428-40 - Happy Mostly Monochromatic Mondays!

On Tuesday December 7, 2015 I stopped by the South Waterfront Greenway park to watch the Christmas Ships on their way up river to Milwaukie. The ships were quite spread out as they came by this stretch of river so I've simply overlaid six photos to create this "multiple exposure" mash-up of the ships as seen from this location. On Wednesday night the winds were so strong that the ships never left the Riverplace Marina… NB42044,49,53,56,61,65

Part of a series of iPhone ScanCamera slit-scans of the carnival amusement thrill ride called the Zipper. Here the slit was moving: BottomTop, LeftRight, TopBottom. I like how ScanCamera and OverCam allow you to capture long exposure effects day or night that are wonderfully different from those taken using long exposures with a camera. I was too tired to leave home, but with clear skies and temps in low 70s to upper 60s it was also too hard to pass up setting up the camera and a lounge chair on the back patio to see how many meteors I might capture or see from here in town. After doing some test exposures settled on using ISO 400 (higher ISOs simply washed out the sky and added noise), f2.8, 30sec exposures; then locked down the bulb setting to make the camera take photos continuously only to discover that the camera stopped after 100 exposures well before the battery ran down or card filled up; but simply restarting the locked down bulb mode got the camera to take another sequence of 100 exposures. Between nodding off and restarting the camera only managed capture about 360 exposures between 11:30PM and 4AM, of which only three captured a meteor; visually I only saw about a dozen even though I estimate I was awake for about half time.

Despite its smooth appearance this meteor streak is not an iridium flare. According to heavens-above both of the two closest flares were more than an hour away and in different locations in the sky.

Visually the sky and house appeared darker than in the photo above with only the slightest hint of Milky-Way barely visible to the naked eye, so it was a pleasant surprise to see some Milky-Way detail in the photos. In the photo above, besides the Milky-Way and a meteor you can also see: the Big and Little Dippers, Lyra, Cygnus, and The Northern Cross see notes. 30sec, f2.8, ISO400, Nikon10.5mm full frame fisheye.
