Dolmans, properly called Portal Tombs, mark burial places in a very distinctive way, with large capstones elevated at an angle and held up by huge standing stones. They were created between 3000 BC and 2000 BC and are generally held to be tombs, though they may also have had a ritual significance.
The stones we see now would have originally been covered in earthen mounds, with the area below the capstone forming an entrance leading to the tomb proper. Hence the correct name of Portal Tombs.
There are more than 100 dolmans scattered throughout Ireland, in various states of repair.
Quite how the people of the time manipulated the truly massive capstones into place is unknown, but the fact that so much of their work still stands some 4,500 years later is a testament to their evident skill.
Poulnabrone Dolman
Standing alone in a rocky field, with no visitor centre, car park or paved pathway to take away from a vista that has not changed in Millennia, the Poulnabrone Dolman (above) is one of the finest remaining dolmans in Ireland. It is also one of the most visited, so unless you arrive early in the morning there are likely to be quite a few people around.
Poulnabrone means "hole of the sorrows" and in 1986, when the area around the dolman was excavated, the remains of 16 adults and children were found to have been buried there, over a period of perhaps 500 years. Alongside them were many artefacts, including arrowheads and axes, stone beads and broken pottery, some of which are now on display in the National Museum in Dublin. These allowed archaeologists to date the dolman with some confidence to about 2,500 BC.
The region where the dolman stands - the Burren - is a treasure trove of stone age remains, with some 70 tombs and about 500 circular stone structures or forts. Keep your eyes peeled as you drive around, get out of the car occasionally and take a walk around - the echoes of our ancient ancestors are never very far away.

Exeter Cathedral, properly known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter in Exeter, is an Anglican cathedral, and the seat of the Bishop of Exeter, in the city of Exeter, Devon, in South West England. The present building was complete by about 1400, and has several notable features, including an early set of misericords, an astronomical clock and the longest uninterrupted vaulted ceiling in England.
The founding of the cathedral at Exeter, dedicated to Saint Peter, dates from 1050, when the seat of the bishop of Devon and Cornwall was transferred from Crediton because of a fear of sea-raids. A Saxon minster already existing within the town (and dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Peter) was used by Leofric as his seat, but services were often held out of doors, close to the site of the present cathedral building.
In 1107 William Warelwast was appointed to the see, and this was the catalyst for the building of a new cathedral in the Norman style. Its official foundation was in 1133, during Warelwast's time, but it took many more years to complete. Following the appointment of Walter Bronescombe as bishop in 1258, the building was already recognised as outmoded, and it was rebuilt in the Decorated Gothic style, following the example of Salisbury. However, much of the Norman building was kept, including the two massive square towers and part of the walls. It was constructed entirely of local stone, including Purbeck Marble. The new cathedral was complete by about 1400, apart from the addition of the chapter house and chantry chapels.
During the Second World War, Exeter was one of the targets of a German air offensive against British cities of cultural and historical importance, which became known as the "Baedeker Blitz". On 4 May 1942 an early-morning air raid took place over Exeter. The cathedral sustained a direct hit by a large high-explosive bomb on the chapel of St James, completely demolishing it. The muniment room above, three bays of the aisle and two flying buttresses were also destroyed in the blast. The medieval wooden screen opposite the chapel was smashed into many pieces by the blast, but it has been reconstructed and restored. Many of the cathedral's most important artefacts, such as the ancient glass (including the great east window), the misericords, the bishop's throne, the Exeter Book, the ancient charters (of King Athelstan and Edward the Confessor) and other precious documents from the library had been removed in anticipation of such an attack. The precious effigy of Walter Branscombe had been protected by sand bags. Subsequent repairs and the clearance of the area around the western end of the building uncovered portions of earlier structures, including remains of the Roman city and of the original Norman cathedral. A Tale from Ancient Greece
There was once a king named Midas who did a good deed for a Satyr and was granted a wish by the God of wine, Dionysus. For his wish, Midas asked that whatever he touched would turn to gold. Although Dionysus tried to dissuade him, Midas insisted that the wish was an excellent one, and it was granted!
Excitedly, Midas went about touching all sorts of things, turning them into gold.
Soon Midas became hungry. He picked up a piece of food, but he couldn't eat it, for it had turned to gold in his hand! "I'll starve," moaned Midas, "Perhaps this was not such a good wish after all!"
Midas' beloved daughter, seeing his dismay, threw her arms about him to comfort him, and, she too turned to gold! "The golden touch is no blessing," cried Midas. He went to the river and wept. The sand of that river turned as yellow as "fool's gold" for it is there, they say, that King Midas washed away the curse of the golden touch with his own tears.
These are some of my better slide scans of yesteryear. When I get it properly mastered there will be more.
Many homes in Sydney prefer their decks to be made out of timber. That's because timber looks more elegant than most materials. As for the kind of timber used for decking, the most common is treated pine. It is especially preferred because of its durability, being able to withstand rotting for about 30 years.
However, like most types of timber, pinewood is also susceptible to splintering and discolouration as soon as months after installation. Extreme weather conditions can be a factor to this. That's why, as timber decking is constantly exposed to heat and moisture, it is crucial to provide it with regular maintenance

Apple Watch: How to properly clean your Apple Watch
Using common sense, expect that your Apple Watch can get dirty from your arm sweat and dust particles as you wear it. However, there’s a proper way of making it clean again. Here’s how.
Properly fed up with this malingering winter now. Another archive photo, sunrise somewhere on the M1.
yea... now this is a properly made pizza! the guy was cool as - gave us a free one too! :D (ah yea... internet didnt work for ages.. hence the large upload.. )
Les Gourmets Des Ternes in lovely Knightsbridge is a (proper) Parisian bistro - food is typical bistrot French - traditional, not nouvelle (but having not tried any I can’t properly comment in that yet!…). We were there for the cocktail bar, the 'the Rendez-Vous’ - head upstairs to the first floor and there you shall find it. Said bar’s focus seems to be on French wines (some of them ‘fine’ - if you know what I mean…) plus cocktails made from the orange liqueur, Cointreau (also French, and quite good!)
The space itself is small and intimate, there’s a balcony terrace that you access by actually climbing out of a window (I thought this was a mistake at first but no, this is part of the fun - especially with alcohol involved). Almost all the staff are French speaking, so it seems like a good place to go and indulge your Francophile tendencies (assuming that you have Francophile tendencies of course… you could just go for the cocktails). Also on the bar snacks menu are pastries from La Patisserie Des Reves. In terms of prices, it can be pretty costly here - even by Knightsbridge standards. What can I say… indulge yourself?
I said earlier that they’re a ‘proper’ Parisian bistro: the original Les Gourmets des Ternes (opened in 1962 in the 8th District of Paris) is something of a Parisian culinary institution, with repeat customers including Sharon Stone and Jack Nicholson (Les Gourmets have photographic evidence of this on their walls). We also got to meet Maximilien (‘Max') Marie - the 20something grandson of Francis, the restaurant’s founder. He was a swell and ‘dynamic' guy and wore a shiny silver suit. It might not have been a shiny silver suit but that’s how my memory has decided he was dressed!
Would certainly return for actual food since, if what I have read is anything to go by, their previous restaurants have set the bar pretty highly! On that note, there’s another Gourmets Des Ternes in Maida Vale - which has been there for longer.

On my 16th visit the Grey-headed Lapwing eventually came close enough to photograph properly in good light. Previously the only time I had seen it as nearas this was in driving sleet.
Interestingly on several photos it seemed to have frothy goo at the end of its bill. I suspect this is a defence mechanism of the earthworms it was eating. It wasn't a successful strategy! I left some photos as tey were but also photoshopped others to make the bill look better.
This is only the second record of this species in the UK and is probably the same bird as occurred in May 2023

This didn't go through properly last time - sorry!
1. The crowd at 12:48 PM, Lafayette Park.
2. This sign prompted a rash of shouting "Teabag the D-Bag!" outside the
White House.
3. The rationale given for this sign was "Obama is just like the French:
arrogant, socialist, and nobody likes him."
4. Tea bags unceremoniously dumped in a puddle in Lafayette Park. A speaker
on the small stage was later heard implying that those taking pictures of
the spilled tea had dumped the tea themselves to make the protesters look
bad.
5. The protesters and reporters are pushed back out of the park to H Street
by the Secret Service due to a box of teabags flung out onto the White House
lawn.

A clogged toilet is probably the last thing you’d want to deal with, but once it happens you can’t help it and you’ll need to attend to it immediately. While you may be wise enough to keep a plunger for times like these, not everyone knows how to plunge the toilet the right way. If you’re a little unsure about it yourself, here’s the proper way to do this next time you’re dealing with a clog.

Properly cool day. Galibier and izoard were epic. Finally managed to get the tourer over 50mph coming off izoard. Passed some motorbikes! It's hard for me to breathe over 6500ft, just lose so much strength. Descent off both was insane. Epic day.
The roof should be viewed as your home's first line of defense when it comes to the elements. That makes it very important to maintain the roof as well as possible. Many homeowners neglect roofs until the issues are major. The article below can help you maintain the quality of the roof.
If you have a leak when it rains, examine it when it's dry and correct it. There is not one quick way to patch your leak, and you could get hurt by trying to work on a wet, slippery roof. Therefore, don't climb on your roof until it quits raining and it is completely dry.
If you need to fix a leak in your roof, make sure you get it right with the first try. This refers to the fact that you do not stop with only a single spot causing the issue. Continue to inspect the entire roof to ensure that multiple leaks are not to blame.
Prior to putting your name on a contract, ask your roofer a few pre-determined questions. For example, ask how many nails they plan on setting up each shingle. Typically, three nails aren't enough. Inquire further about the procedures that they can be using. If you are not happy with their response, find another roofer.
Friends, family and co-workers should be the initial resource when choosing a roofing contractor. Ask those people you know best about their opinions on the work done, if they thought if was a fair price, and if the materials were of good quality. Inquire about how well the yard was cleaned up and what type of guarantee they received as well.
When you're trying to hire someone to do roofing for you, do some research first. Don't consider that you should hire the first person that you find or one that's the cheapest. Take the time to find out more about all the roofers in the area. You can ask friends and family, use a service or research online.
When you have your contractors narrowed down, inquire further about the warranties they provide. Find one that is covers you for at least 3-five-years to be safe. The warranty should deal with poor work and defective materials, and you should have manufacturer warranty copies too.
As mentioned in the introduction, the roof is necessary to keep your family safe and protected. Make sure you apply the recommendation found above to keep your home in good condition. A little work done on time will pay off long into the future. www.roofingparker.org
Holidays are properly over here in Holland and they were both at work the whole day. As a surprise I wanted to do some chores to make it a little bit easier for them. Doing the dishes didn’t seem the thing to do, I’m no fan of water and doing the dishes involves a lot of that horrible stuff so I’m told. Tomorrow they collect the wheely bins with our general waste (we’re really good at recycling so it’s not that much). I thought I could at least put all the rubbish in the wheely bin so they only have to wheel it out of the garden onto the street (I couldn’t possibly do that with my short legs). I just hope I don’t fall in.
A lot of measuring and the "nickel" and "dime" tests to gauge the passage and taper rate were required to identify this properly.
This seems to be a Model of 1855 Springfield Armory bayonet, from the civil war period. The collars were compressed (shrunk) for the narrowed M1873 barrel. Over a million M1855's remained, mostly unused, at the end of the Civil War.
I had thought it to be a Model of 1873 Musket bayonet when purchased at an estate sale, but apparently I was incorrect.
This type "frog" hanger was apparently instated after the war. The collars on these were shrunk, and they were blued.
There are some tiny corrosion spots here and there, but the blue on the blade and locking collar is almost perfect and doesn't seem to have been re-done, or if re-done, it was long ago and done VERY nicely.
Detailed information is available on the Springfield Armory Museum site, and also in: Reilly, Robert M. AMERICAN SOCKET BAYONETS AND SCABBARDS. Andrew Mowbray Inc. Linclon, R.I. 1990.
I have handled, sold, and collected many bayonets of this period. This one, once all the old grease and grit was removed with rags and mineral sprits, is the best I've seen of this type.
length of scabbard tube= 18 1/2".
Length of sheet brass hangar, bottom edge to top = 5 1/8"
length of barrel collar = 3"
inside tube span of barrel collar appx. = 3/4" (mikes about .782", but my calipers are loosey-goosey...)
Appx. blade length to curve/collar = 18"
