Endemic pipit found in open habitats from coastline to alpine shrublands. Scarce in intensively farmed areas. Prominent pale eyebrow with brown streaked upper body, pale underparts and brown streaking on breast. Distinctive 'tzweep' call given year round. Repeated high-pitched 'pip-it' territorial song heard mainly in August-February. Often seen walking rather than hopping, frequently flicking their long tail when they stop, or when perched. Can form loose flocks in autumn and winter. Very similar to introduced Eurasian Skylark. Note lack of large head crest, a more slender body, and distinctive habit of wagging its long tail up and down. (eBird)

---------------

We'd seen pipits a couple of times at the side of the roads but were unable to stop and view them properly due to traffic and narrow roads. Finally, we found one while out walking on the trail. We almost missed it, assuming it was the Song Thrush that we had been viewing in th same location. Luckily, a second look showed us the long-searched for pipit.

A male arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) carried back a small fish, and a female was calling. Later, he landed properly.

The snowdrops that have been growing since Christmas - getting bigger and bigger, are now open!! I really must split the clump and move them around the garden!

When used properly, pastry forks are meant to help cut into cake with the wider tine, eliminating the need for a knife. (It’s also particularly helpful with fish, where the notch can be used to help remove pieces of skin and delicate bones from your meal.)

T is for tines - the teeth of forks!

I'll explore Grantham properly one day, it's only about 20 minutes up the road. This photo was taken after I'd explored what's left of the Grantham canal.

No obvious architectural merit to anything in this scene alas. From the limited amount I've seen, Grantham seems to be one of those places which is given over to cars, with no obvious benefit to anyone or anything. But maybe I will be amazed by it all when I get the chance to look round properly.

Step outside your Western comfort zone, visit the Médina of Fes with its twisting, sloping, narrow streets, if you can properly call them that. There are countless and repetitive merchant stalls, donkeys, carts, and impossible crowds, and shopping opportunities, such as the shoes in this leather shop.

Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona, in the United States.

Horseshoe Bend is located 5 miles (8.0 km) downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of Page.

It is accessible via hiking a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) round trip from U.S. Route 89, but an access road also reaches the geological structure, as it is part of a state park. Horseshoe Bend can be viewed from the steep cliff above.

The overlook is 4,200 feet (1,300 m) above sea level, and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet (980 m) above sea level, making it a 1,000-foot (300 m) drop.

The rock walls of Horseshoe Bend contain a variety of minerals, among which are hematite, platinum and garnet.

(Now, to understand this place, you have to be here, I always wanted to walk by the river side, but it would be at another time and in other circumstances, of which I have very little record in photos. I was working in these areas when I was in the United States Armed Forces.)

Some old shots that were not posted properly before from Nov 2013 so didn't appear!

The old town of Matillas,

Speaking properly we should talk about Matillas (the old one) and La Estación (the new one). Let's start with the original: located in the valley of Henares, next to the Roman road to Zaragoza, it was founded and baptized in the repopulation of the XII-XIII centuries, giving it such name for the existing vegetation. It was integrated into the Common Lands of Atienza until the fourteenth century, when it passed to the Lord of Jadraque. Its people lived on cereal (wheat, barley and rye) and sheep.

In this term, due to its location, important battles were fought in the War of Succession (18th century), Carlistas (XIX) and Civil War (In) (1936-39) that left their trail. When the quarries were launched in 1904, the industry and the railway arrived that caused the ruin of the old town and the birth of a new one, next to the factory and station (La Estación). (Source: Blog of La Vereda de Puebla )

I tried to make these cardamom buns yesterday. A few details slipped my mind, and not all went well, but the outcome was not too bad and, although they are not perfect, they smell delicious and are really tasty without being too sweet!

I am ready to give it a second try and do it properly, this time :)

I had wanted to visit Coney Island for a number of years, but the slight difficulty of getting there meant it was not very high on my priority list until now.

The island is certainly a lot bigger than I thought and it may take more than one visit to properly explore it. It reminds me a little of Pulau Ubin but a more cleaner and easier route to travel around by bicycle.

Some experimentation was done in post processing of this shot so things might look a little different from usual shot of photos.

Goats are typically very curious, and will come up to the fence when a person is present. And if you're gonna properly check out a goat, you gotta get face-to-face with it, up close. This little guy was doing just that, going down the line and getting face-to-face with each goat in every pen.

Portora Royal School, more properly called Enniskillen Royal School, traces its foundation to a decree by James I of England (James VI of Scotland) that was issued in 1608. His wish was that 'there shall be a free school at least in each county, appointed for the education of youth in learning and religion.' It had been intended that such a school should be built in the county town. At the time of the proclamation County Fermanagh had no town to which the description 'county' could be applied, in fact it could be said that the county had no settlements to which the description 'town' could be applied.

The famous, and some would say infamous, Oscar Fingal O’Flaherty Wills Wilde was a boarder; he attended the school during the period 1864 to 1872, subsequently to attend TCD and then Magdalen at Oxford.

#SlidersSunday

"Caleidoscoped" wooden roof of the gym at the Olympic Village in Elstal near Berlin for Sliders Sunday.

The finished image reminded me of a huge ship's hold - which immediately also reminded me of the story of Jonah and the Whale and also of Captain Ahab's eternal chase of Moby Dick. Since I've always loved the story of Jonah and the Whale when I was a child, but struggled to like (or even properly understand) Ahab's gruesome and cruel possession with the white whale called Moby Dick, I decided to use Jonah's story as my own imaginary backdrop for this image. Jonah and the Whale "inverted", if you like. I can't really remember when and where I heard the story first; it is possible that it was in religion class in elementary school, that my parents read me the story, or that I saw it in a children's programme on TV, but it fascinated me very much, and in my vivid childhood imagination, the whale eventually took a liking to Jonah (and vice versa), and, after passing their first "adventure" - the travel to Niniveh - together, the whale and Jonah became lifelong friends. I tried to visualise how Jonah would make himself comfortable inside of the whale's stomach, and I ended up with a fully furnished "room" with a comfy chair, bed and bookshelf, small kitchen (for both of them, since neither Jonah nor the whale could live on love alone) etc., and they experienced many more adventures together ever since ;-)

This is a very straightforward slide, I simply copied the single image of the roof to a second layer in photoshop, duplicated the workspace, mirrored one of the layers vertically and combined both layers. In Lightroom I then rotated the finished image. Some finishing processing touches here or there, like enhancing the structure, some HSL sliding for the colours etc. - done :-)

HSS, and stay safe, Everyone!

Penguins can’t properly fly no matter how hard they try. While on land, the birds don’t really use their wings for much beyond smacking each other about. But in the water they are strong and graceful swimmers, using their wings as flippers to propel themselves to surprising bursts of speed.

When penguins approach shore, they often launch themselves into the air. Sometimes, it’s to escape from predators such as leopard seals. At other times, it seems like they are simply saving themselves a difficult climb up steep rocks, snow and ice (WWF).

Why Did Penguins Stop Flying? The Answer Is Evolutionary

Penguins lost the ability to fly eons ago, and scientists may have finally figured out why. A new study suggests that getting off the ground eventually just took too much effort for birds that were becoming expert swimmers.

Flight might make some aspects of penguins' Antarctic life much easier. The grueling march of the emperor penguins, for example, might take only a few easy hours rather than many deadly days. Escaping predators like leopard seals at the water's edge would also be easier if penguins could take flight, so scientists have often wondered why and how the birds lost that ability (National Geographic).

Pardon the *blurry* . . . but my hands were shaking, even though my stabilizer was *on* for this long shot, clear across our back yard.

There was NO time for me to grab my tripod and get set up properly . . . as it was, I only had a few shots before the blue jays began to announce their disapproval with their predator (who, BTW, was as peaceful as could be) . . .

This image does not do justice to the size and beauty of this rare white hawk which, as far as I know, has never visited us in the 46 years we've lived here! At first glance I thought it was a snowy white owl, but oh no . . . there were definitely hawkish features!

Immediately I googled this gorgeous bird and loved the symbolism:

"If you keep seeing a hawk with white feathers, something very sacred is about to take place, and the Creator is giving you a message that a miracle is on the way. In short: hawks are viewed as messengers by the Native Americans. They could bring messages from deities, deceased ancestors, benevolent guides, etc."

Is it any *coincidence* that today is my mother's birthday . . . she would have been 97.

OMG . . . just as I was posting this, I opened the draperies in my *woman cave* and lo and behold, we're having our first SNOW!

dododododo, dodododo!

Sliding into winter white, I send you all great wishes for a wonderful "Sliders Sunday" . . .

As you can probably tell, I did this one properly and lay flat on the ground to get eye level.

This will be the only other Iris photo I will show. The rest of them had focus problems I just couldn't live with.

I had a really difficult time telling, through the viewfinder, when it was in focus properly (my lenses are so old and beat up, they won't auto-focus anymore... well ONE lens won't... the other one won't manual focus. sigh.)

So here is the other iris shot I was willing to share. I has focus issues too, but not as bad.

Alison, below, says the colors are off the scale... she meant it is beautiful, but I realize the colors really ARE off the scale. However, I like it that way, so vivid!

Once the sun was properly up and the mist and cloud began to burn off and roll away some lovely, golden light slowly, briefly took charge.

Finally picked up the camera properly after a few months while Caroline and myself were on Honeymoon in Wales.

Beautiful light in the Black Mountains as ever.

It's been quite a while since I've been out properly with my camera. I've had a couple of unsuccessful trips to the coast, so at least I could shake off the rust (on me not my camera), but I really hope I can make the most of the coming autumn. Here's one from a lovely morning last year.

The Gulden Leeuw was designed and built as an ocean-going ship with ice class. In combination with the chosen rigging, it is a fast, solid ship. It is a ship that can sail properly. The rigging is not just decorative, but has good sailing characteristics.

The Gulden Leeuw is a three-masted topsail schooner. The front mast is also yard-rigged. This very versatile rigging combines the advantages of a square-rigged ship with those of a fore-and-aft rigged ship.

Have you noticed that sometimes aspen seem to be watching us?

This is a composite, slud quite a bit in Lr and then in Ps.

The original, seen below in the first comment box (and if that comment doesn't show, hitting the browser's refresh button should do the trick), is an intentional camera movement image.

Using a pretty slow shutter speed, and panning the camera vertically created the original image.

The result of sliding in Lr is the next image in the first comment box. Clarity and Vibrance sliders were utilized. Tone curve sliders were adjusted.

At the same time that I had created the intentional camera movement image, I had also made some standard still images of this group of aspen.

In Ps, I composited in bits of the same trees from the still image, using masks, then sliding opacity.

I've often talked about using luminosity alpha channels to constrain adjustments to areas based on luminosity. I had created those channels and used them to increase contrast only within the mid tones, leaving the brightest and darkest tones untouched from the version created in Lr. Googling for Tony Kuyper's tutorials will give lots of wonderful information.

Lastly, I felt that the image was too far toward the yellow and green end of the color temperature range, so a photo filter adjustment layer was added with a magenta filter at the top of the Ps layer stack. And of course its density and opacity sliders were adjusted.

I hope your sliders sunday is going well. I haven't been able to be online much in the past few weeks. Work has been extremely busy. I've been needing to go in early and so have been unable to post to groups and properly view and comment on photos. So I haven't felt right about posting and running. Been getting home late after work and so haven't even had time to be working on photos. We've been helping friends move. We've had friends in and out of the hospital.

So today is especially appreciated. I haven't gone in to work, I'm staying home, and I get to now go visit the sliders sunday pool and see the intriguing images everyone has posted!

Peterborough Cathedral, properly the Cathedral Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Andrew – also known as Saint Peter's Cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Peterborough, dedicated to Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Andrew, whose statues look down from the three high gables of the famous West Front. Although it was founded in the Anglo-Saxon period, its architecture is mainly Norman, following a rebuilding in the 12th century. With Durham and Ely cathedrals, it is one of the most important 12th-century buildings in England to have remained largely intact, despite extensions and restoration.

Peterborough Cathedral is known for its imposing Early English Gothic West Front (façade) which, with its three enormous arches, is without architectural precedent and with no direct successor. The appearance is slightly asymmetrical, as one of the two towers that rise from behind the façade was never completed (the tower on the right as one faces the building), but this is only visible from a distance.

It's a horrendously boring wedge, I know. This is what the Milwaukee area has to offer in a pinch. UP 2002 leads M-ALG3 out of West Allis with a gaggle of power leading the sizeable train south out of town. I'm glad UP repainted these, and put a properly colored frame stripe on them instead of the typical yellow they previously had. Blue would be better, but that would be far, far too dangerous.
