Sadly my beloved nine-year-old Jeep Grand Cherokee didn't survive my recent accident. So I needed a new beast. Black, with black wheels and windows... yep, pimped it! Fortunately it also came with some more sensible wheels for the winter and off-road... which it will be doing.
There's a balance between economy and practicality to be made, as we are a big family living down a very steep ungritted hill.... I was going to buy a Golf TDI but this one's kinder to the environment it turns out!

Description of work: I loved the location and feel of the Blue Bridge & began to strategize different ideas on what could successfully work on this venue. It was also important to me to keep an animal theme as I once again planning to partner with the HSWM.
I came up with the idea of monkeys hanging from the bridge. Upon my return, I started right away on the artwork and design, rendered it in CAD and created the first prototype in December 2010.
Each monkey is 4 1/2 feet tall, 2 feet wide and 6 inches deep and each weighs about 30 pounds. They are made of Steel and are designed to oxidize into a rich brown color.
As you can see from the mock up of the bridge, the monkeys will hang in groupings of two or three. A grouping of two will be about 9 feet long and three will be 13 1/2 feet long. They can hang from each others tails and some even hang upside down. They were specifically designed for the pedestrian bridge. Can technology help prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV), particularly in low- and middle-income countries? Increasingly, cell phones, cameras, crowd-sourcing, and mobile apps are being used in innovative ways to address GBV, but questions surrounding ethics, effectiveness, and practicality remain. The Interagency Gender Working Group, U. S. Agency for International Development, Woodrow Wilson Center, CARE, and Population Reference Bureau will host a panel discussion exploring the ethics around new technologies to combat GBV; how effective they are; and what some of the more practical and actionable ways forward might be.

Following the success of the Mercedes-AMG GT 2-door sports car, the high performance subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz launched a 4-Door Coupé version in 2018. Available with either a 3,0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine or a 4,0-litre turbocharged V8 engine, the -Door Coupé (in reality a five door like the Porsche Panamera) is said to offer similar driving engagement as the 2-door car.
Pictured here is the 'entry-level' car, the GT 43. Being the base car is not a terrible thing, however, as its M256 engine produces a healthy 367 PS, mated to an intelligent 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system.
The overall design is striking but, to be honest, left me somewhat underwhelmed. The five-door design increases practicality, undoubtedly, but the saloon body of the CLS looks slightly better in turn. The GT 4-Door Coupé does trump the CLS inside, with a sports themed interior that is centered around the driver.

This larger than life, garish, bright, in your face graffeti struck me as being in stark contrast to the comparatively mundane, down-to-earth practicality of a push bike.

Seamus McKee, Chairperson of the conference made some concluding remarks before breaking for lunch. Business Rates Conference 2016, which was part of the Chambré Public Affairs âEye on the Hillâ series of policy events, provided participants with a unique insight into an important programme of reform. The conference offered context and analysis from the Minister, senior officials, sector leaders and noted experts, the conference is perfectly timed to inform responses to the consultation, which closes a fortnight later. On 26 October 2015, Finance Minister Arlene Foster launched a public consultation on a wide-ranging Review of Northern Ireland's Non-Domestic Rating System. The consultation asks questions that touch upon every sector in Northern Ireland, giving respondents the chance to provide imaginative suggestions to improve how revenue is raised locally. Key questions include whether the 100% exemption for charities should be maintained, and how the system could be changed to better suit the demands of local business. Because of the Departmentâs willingness to engage creatively with the business community and other stakeholders, this consultation represents a rare opportunity to influence major change. Business rating is a vital form of taxation, raising some £592m of revenue for regional and local Government in Northern Ireland. However, it is also a significant expense for the businesses that are the lifeblood of the local economy, and can act as a particular disincentive to smaller enterprises who want to invest and expand. At the other end of the spectrum, charities in Northern Ireland benefit significantly from the current rating system, enjoying a 100% rates exemption.

The actual strips of papyrus that I cut (by drawing the knife along the whole length of the stem, as the ones where I attempted to 'unroll' it were an unsatisfactory mess). While in Bahir Dar, with access to the plentiful papyrus supplies of Lake Tana, I took the opportunity to do a little bit of experimental investigation into the debate on how papyrus was manufactured. Specifically, I was interested in the practicalities of Hendricks' reconstruction of the method of papyrus manufacture by means of a 'peeling' or unrolling process, working the papyrus from the outside to the inside, all in one piece, which is then flattened in pressing. (see Hendricks, 'Pliny, Historia Naturalis XIII, 74-82 and the Manufacture of Papyrus' in Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik XXXVII (1980) 121--136). I cut my way through a dozen stalks, and while I very easily got a handle on creating usable segments by means of a kind of shaving/splitting process with the knife, I found that the pith resisted being 'peeled' or unrolled in any way, and could not satisfactorily make the turns at the points of the triangular stem. In addition to being difficult, it was extremely slow, and while efficiency is not necessarily a particularly strong argument for reconstructing traditional production practices, I came away from the experiment with a greater appreciation for the feel of papyrus pith and the implications of different methods of cutting it. I am disinclined towards the Hendricks method at present, but see Wallert's article (Wallert, 'The Reconstruction of Papyrus Manufacture: A Preliminary Investigation' in Studies in Conservation, Vol. 34, No. 1, (Feb., 1989), pp. 1-8), suggesting that there may be physical characteristics that can solve the question independent of the opinions of modern scholars engaging in experimental archaeology.

In April 1925, Scranton Free Press editor and manager Edward L. Lynett acquired frontage on Penn Avenue and Spruce Street to erect new offices for the newspaper he had bought thirty years earlier, the Scranton Times. As the journal's sixth publisher, Lynett brought success to the publishing venture and circulation rivaled the Republican and Scranton Truth. An increased staff and more presses undoubtedly necessitated the more spacious building, but the 1922 acquisition of WEJL-AM radio station encouraged expansion as well. Architects Davis and Lewis designed a steel-frame and concrete building four stories tall with 55,000 square feet of space. The building embodied functionality and practicality. The classic-style white terracotta exterior was designed with large street-level windows that invited passers-by to view newspaper-making first hand. The building has fine touches of ornate designs that were common in structures built in Scranton during the prosperous 1920s. Above each of the two entrances on Penn Avenue stands a bronze owl whose green eyes once lit up at night— keeping a watchful eye on the news around town. These specialties were made exclusively for the Times Building at Louis C. Tiffany's Studios in New York City. With the advent of television and FM broadcasting, the Scranton Times created FM radio station WQAN. George Lewis designed a fifthfloor addition to the Times building for broadcasting studios and a transmitting tower in 1950.

310 Claydon Way is located in one of the finer neighborhoods of Sacramento. Having the advantage of being almost riverside, access to the American River Parkway and bicycle path is just one block from the home, providing lovely walks through incredible natural scenery and wildlife.
Year round, this beautiful neighborhood known as Wilhaggin, shows off its aesthetic pride with floral blossoms and blooms. Unlike other fine neighborhoods in the Sacramento area, Wilhaggin is mostly composed of sprawling single story dwellings. with wide streets, sidewalks and street lights.
The "ambiance" of this kind of neighborhood intention is palpable -- quietude, modest elegance, comfortable curb appeal, an abundance of mature and establish landscaping and shade trees.
Back when these houses were made in the sixties -- before magazine living lifestyle took over and replaced practicality with the discomforts of looking sharp -- strong bones and durability were time-honored architectural concepts. Pleasing oneself was more important than pleasing the neighbors, so the focus of the aesthetic addressed things like "hot summers", "colder winters" and the need for shade and light.
There were many independent builders at that time who became famous for their designs and also for their creative concepts for creating ideal settings for a river-living climate.
Among those that rose to fame, Lewis & Bristow are known for their comfortable living designs that centered around poolside appreciation. Shaped like a "U", 310 Claydon Way has three giant sliders that open up onto a giant back yard patio. The patio has roll-down awnings for late afternoon sun shade but also lends itself to an outside office or enclosed dinner-time eating.

The conclusion one can only draw is that, overall, practicality dominates over style.
I don't doubt for an instant that Checker cars were as good as advertised. Unfortunately for Checker, the vast majority of car buyers wanted (and still want, for that matter) something more than simple practicality. Looks DO matter, and the Checker looked like it was designed by a committee of factory workers in Communist China in 1954. The ad above ran in the July 1965 issue of National Geographic magazine------at a time when Checker's competition included clean, crisp new Ford LTDs and sleek, curvaceous Chevy Impalas. Now honestly, if your next-door neighbour had one of those attractive conveyances sitting out front, would you want a Checker parked in YOUR driveway? I mean, you'd REALLY have to place tremendous value on those higher, wider door openings!
It comes down to a couple of simple points for me - the practicality and logic of the 4wd Golf with 4 doors vs the more thrilling performance of the frontwheel drive Scirocco. eventhough the cars have identical engine specs, the Scirocco comes accross as more explosive because its lighter. It will however NOT be as good a long distance tourer as the Golf. (i could be horibly wrong here) Suprizingly the Golf is quite a bit more pricey here in SA. A really cool optical illusion is the aparent differing sizes of the rear wheels - they are all 19" alloys, but in my opinion, the pretty lines of the Scirocco with its sloping roofline and lifting window line along with the bulge of the wider wheel arch, the rea wheel looks bigger and more intensional on the Scirocco.

On 26 October 2015, Finance Minister Arlene Foster launched a public consultation on a wide-ranging Review of Northern Ireland's Non-Domestic Rating System. The consultation asks questions that touch upon every sector in Northern Ireland, giving respondents the chance to provide imaginative suggestions to improve how revenue is raised locally. Key questions include whether the 100% exemption for charities should be maintained, and how the system could be changed to better suit the demands of local business. Because of the Departmentâs willingness to engage creatively with the business community and other stakeholders, this consultation represents a rare opportunity to influence major change. Business rating is a vital form of taxation, raising some £592m of revenue for regional and local Government in Northern Ireland. However, it is also a significant expense for the businesses that are the lifeblood of the local economy, and can act as a particular disincentive to smaller enterprises who want to invest and expand. At the other end of the spectrum, charities in Northern Ireland benefit significantly from the current rating system, enjoying a 100% rates exemption.

Very much a concept, with no pretense at production viability, Cherry claimed the car's shape was inspired by the cab-forward Le Mans racing cars of the time, although a mock 2.3L Slant-Four engine formed from wood GRP and aluminium nipped in the bud any illusions of actual power and performance!
But SRV's flush door handles, electric self-levelling suspension and aerofoil to improve downforce were all remarkably prescient for the time."

DMWD was responsible for a number of devices of varying practicality and success, many of which were based on solid fuel rocket propulsion. As might be expected of a small, dynamic and highly experimental group, their output encompassed both resounding successes and sublimely comical failures, notable among which were the Panjandrum rocket-propelled beach defence demolition weapon and Hajile, a rocket-powered alternative to parachutes for dropping materiel. A scheme to camouflage bodies of water, used as navigation markers by bombers, was undertaken by a group named "Kentucky Minstrels". It involved spreading coal dust from a ship, ironically named "HMS Persil". The scheme failed due to the actions of wind and tide but did produce some confusion when the coal-covered waters were mistaken for tarmac in the blackout.
Its successful and important developments included the Hedgehog anti-submarine weapon and Squid anti-submarine mortar, as well as the Harvey Projector, the development of an Army anti-aircraft rocket battery designed to be mountable on naval vessels, and the system of degaussing used to protect ships against magnetic mines, and above all an instrumental role in developing parts of the Mulberry harbour used in the D-Day landings. Hedgehog was developed after the Lt-Col Blacker's spigot mortar weapons were shown to the DMWD by MD1 ("Churchill's Toyshop").
Several experimental weapons were trialled at Brean Down Fort, a satellite unit of HMS Birnbeck (Birnbeck pier taken over as a base for DMWD) in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset. Some of the better known weapons trialled were the seaborne Bouncing bomb designed specifically to bounce to a target such as across water to avoid torpedo nets, Anti-submarine missile AMUCK and the expendable acoustic emitter (designed to confuse noise seeking torpedoes).

Notice the pillbox to the left. It is a reinforced concrete searchlight bunker which had a cantilevered projecting roof (it was for illuminating ships, not aircraft) The roof has now been flipped over on the top by the sea. Some sea!

Seamus McKee, Chairperson of the conference made some concluding remarks before breaking for lunch. Business Rates Conference 2016, which was part of the Chambré Public Affairs âEye on the Hillâ series of policy events, provided participants with a unique insight into an important programme of reform. The conference offered context and analysis from the Minister, senior officials, sector leaders and noted experts, the conference is perfectly timed to inform responses to the consultation, which closes a fortnight later. On 26 October 2015, Finance Minister Arlene Foster launched a public consultation on a wide-ranging Review of Northern Ireland's Non-Domestic Rating System. The consultation asks questions that touch upon every sector in Northern Ireland, giving respondents the chance to provide imaginative suggestions to improve how revenue is raised locally. Key questions include whether the 100% exemption for charities should be maintained, and how the system could be changed to better suit the demands of local business. Because of the Departmentâs willingness to engage creatively with the business community and other stakeholders, this consultation represents a rare opportunity to influence major change. Business rating is a vital form of taxation, raising some £592m of revenue for regional and local Government in Northern Ireland. However, it is also a significant expense for the businesses that are the lifeblood of the local economy, and can act as a particular disincentive to smaller enterprises who want to invest and expand. At the other end of the spectrum, charities in Northern Ireland benefit significantly from the current rating system, enjoying a 100% rates exemption.
