SET 2 – HLT Remodel: 4-20-2023

Some things don’t change: at the back of the music, movies, and books “department” is the store’s selection of licensed pop culture products, just like before. Of course, the only difference is that now it’s located along the rear wall of the store, and is way more condensed than it was over in the front left corner, where it had ample room to space out. In all honesty, I’m not certain that the selection was cut very much if at all, so I’ll give Target some props there; however – and this is the unfortunate part – sticking the same (or similar) amount of stuff in a much smaller space makes it (from a practicality standpoint) harder to browse, and (from a presentation standpoint) much more crowded, and cluttered/junky, to look at (especially when stuff isn’t put back in its proper place – which becomes quite common when something is harder to browse and harder to keep neat as a result!)

Syrian and Coptic Orthodox celebrate the feast of the Epiphany at the baptismal site known as Qasr el-Yahud on the banks of the Jordan River near the West Bank city of Jericho January 19, 2011. Orthodox Christians flocked to the Jordan River to celebrate the feast of the Epiphany at the traditional site where it is believed John the Baptist baptised Jesus Christ.

A Folly for Mrs Macquarie is a sculpture in the Royal Botanic Gardens with breathtaking views of Farm Cove and Sydney Harbour.

In architecture, a folly is an extravagant decorative structure designed more for artistic expression than practicality.

The Royal Botanic Gardens were developed from 1816 under the direction of Elizabeth Macquarie, the second wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. This work was created by Fiona Hall and installed in 2000 at the possible site of an original folly which looks across to Mrs Macquaries Point.

Constructed from wrought iron and sandstone, it depicts a raised arm and clasped dagger from Macquarie's crest, a domed roof of metal Norfolk Island Pine fronds and an underlying, a ceiling of bones representing the animals that once lived in this area, barbed wire walls and an entrance bounded by an axe and scythe.

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, New South Wales, were opened to the public in 1816.

The gardens are open every day of the year, and access is free.

Situated east of the Sydney Opera House, and overlooking Farm Cove, the gardens occupy 30 hectares in area, and are bordered by: the Cahill Expressway to the south and west, Art Gallery road to the east, and Sydney Harbour to the north.

The first farm on the Australian continent, at Farm Cove, was established in 1788 by Governor Phillip. Although that farm failed, the land has been in constant cultivation since that time, as ways were found to make the relatively infertile soils more productive.

Admiral Arthur Phillip RN (11 October 1738 – 31 August 1814) was the first Governor of New South Wales, and founder of the settlement which became Sydney

The Botanic Gardens were founded on this site by Governor Macquarie in 1816 as part of the Governor's Domain. Australia's long history of collection and study of plants began with the appointment of the first Colonial Botanist, Charles Fraser, in 1817.

The Botanic Gardens is thus the oldest scientific institution in Australia and, from the earliest days, has played a major role in the acclimatisation of plants from other regions.

Jaguar Cars Ltd., better known simply as Jaguar is a British luxury car manufacturer, headquartered in Coventry, England. It has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Indian company Tata Motors Ltd. since March 2008 and is operated as part of the Jaguar Land Rover business.

Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company by Sir William Lyons in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars before switching to passenger cars. The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II due to the unfavourable connotations of the SS initials.

The Jaguar D-Type, like its predecessor the C-Type, was a factory-built race car. Although it shared the basic straight-6 XK engine design (initially 3.4L and eventually uprated to 3.8 litres in the late fifties) with the C-Type, the majority of the car was radically different. Perhaps its most ground-breaking innovation was the introduction of a monocoque chassis, which not only introduced aircraft-style engineering to competition car design, but also an aeronautical understanding of aerodynamic efficiency. The D-Type was introduced purely for competition, but after Jaguar withdrew from racing, the company offered the remaining, unfinished chassis as the roadgoing Jaguar XKSS, by making changes to the racers: adding an extra seat, another door, a full-width windshield and primitive folding top, as concessions to practicality. However, on the evening of 12 February 1957, a fire broke out at the Browns Lane plant destroying nine of the twenty five cars that had already been completed or in semi-completion. Production is thought to have included 53 customer D-Types, 18 factory team cars, and 16 XKSS versions.

The new chassis followed aircraft engineering practice, being manufactured according to monocoque principles. The central tub, within which the driver sat, was formed from sheets of aluminium alloy. To this was attached an aluminium tubing subframe carrying the bonnet, engine, front suspension, and steering assembly. The rear suspension and final drive were mounted directly onto the monocoque itself. Fuel was carried in deformable bags inside cells within the monocoque; another aircraft innovation.

The highly efficient, aerodynamic bodywork was largely the work of Malcolm Sayer, who joined Jaguar following a stint with the Bristol Aeroplane Company during World War II. Although he also worked on the C-Type, the limitations of the conventional separate-chassis did not allow full expression of his talent. For the D-Type, Sayer insisted on a minimal frontal area. To reduce its height, Haynes and former-Bentley engineer Walter Hassan developed dry sump lubrication for the XK engine. By also canting the engine over by 8° (resulting in the trademark, off-centre bonnet bulge) the reduction in area was achieved. Care was taken to reduce drag due to the underbody, resulting in an unusually high top speed; for the long Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans, a large vertical stabiliser was mounted behind the driver's head for aerodynamic stability with minimum drag. For the 1955 season, factory cars were fitted with a revised, long-nose version of the bodywork, which increased top speed even further.

Mechanically, many features were shared with the outgoing C-Type. The ground-breaking disc brakes were retained, as was the XK engine. Apart from the new lubrication system, as development progressed during the D-Type's competition life the engine was also revised. 1955 saw the introduction of larger valves, and an asymmetrical cylinder head design within which to accommodate them. The Jaguar D-Type was the second racing car to have Dunlop disk brakes. The Citroën DS, introduced a year later, was the first production car with disk brakes in Europe. The Crosley Hotshot was the first American automobile with disk brakes, in 1949.

Yesterday at Voles

"The Voles started appearing in dribs and drabs.

1st Vole: That’s a nice Drab you’ve got there.

2nd Vole: Thanks, my old Drib was getting a bit drab so I thought I’d change it for a Drab.

1st Vole: Is that the one that at the mere push of the off-road button, it turns into a highly capable off-road vehicle, adept at climbing slippery slopes, descending steep hills and maintaining control on difficult terrain using the very latest 4x4 systems. Does the interior meet even the most exacting of standards, the cabin spacious, airy and flexible and containing a variety of standard features and does it take safety very seriously too, so all the trims have driver and passenger, front, side and curtain airbags as standard.

2nd Vole: I don’t know, but it’s silver.

1st Vole: Oh.

Just then Mr T. Strode into their midst.

3rd Vole: Hey, watch my midst. You’re striding right into it!

Mr T.: Right, listen up. You all remember what you did when we were last here.

1st Vole: It wasn’t me, I wasn’t here.

2nd Vole: She told me to do it, honest.

3rd Vole: I didn’t do it and even if I did, you can’t prove it ‘cause I burnt the evidence.

4th Vole: I’m clinically insane, no court in the land will convict me.

The remaining Voles looked sheepish. It was the thick Arran sweaters that did it.

Mr T.: I mean planting the trees in straight rows, two point five metres apart. However so that it doesn’t look like you’ve planted them in straight rows, two point five metres apart, you shall only plant them in straight rows in one direction and not the other. So where the canes have been put in straight lines, two point five metres apart, it will be your job to follow on behind planting the trees in a straight line in one direction but not the other and more than or less than two point five metres apart. Remember?

The Voles remembered and several fainted, two had the recurrence of their nose bleeds and three again escaped across the fields. [Note to self; must replace the razor wire with electric fencing].

Mr T.: Anyway so that we can plant another 900 this week I want you to get into four groups of three. One making holes, one planting and one putting the guards on.

1st Vole: What do the other nine do?

Mr T.: What other nine?

1st Vole: Well if three are doing what you said that leaves nine watching.

Mr T. Speaking slowly: No, I want four group of three and in each group one will make holes, one will plant and one will put guards on.

2nd Vole: So the lines are already there?

Mr T. Speaking slowly and quietly: No, one group will measure out leaving three groups to do the planting, except that I’m going to do some pruning so the other two can help the other groups.

3rd Vole: So two groups will be four?

Mr. T. Speaking very slowly and quietly: Yes.

4th Vole: So there will be one group of three measuring the lines, two groups of four doing the work of three, one group of three and one pruning?

Mr. T. Speaking very slowly and very quietly: Yes.

5th Vole: What happens when Maryla comes?

Mr. T. Speaking very slowly, very quietly and sobbing: We can have another group of three with Maryla and the two who were in the two groups of four.

6th Vole: What happens when Ros comes?

Mr. T. Speaking very slowly, very quietly, sobbing and pulling out chunks of hair: I’ll sort it out later.

1st Vole to 2nd Vole as they wander off in the general direction of where they are going: Typical management, never think things through. Anyway this Drab of yours, it seems to me it strikes the perfect balance between on road performance, family orientated practicality and rugged 4x4 styling and with a choice of two or four wheel drive systems on both diesel and petrol engines, as well as flexible varioflex rear seating, sizable boot space and higher ride height as standard, it is perfect for life in towns and cities.

2nd Vole: I like the colour.

Later that same day:

Mr T.: Okay then, I think we’re all happy now?

Voles: Oh no we’re not

Mr T.: Oh yes we are.

Voles: Oh no, we’re not.

Mr T.: I see, it’s the pantomime season is it?

Voles: Oh no it isn’t.

Mr T.: Oh yes it is.

Voles: Behind youuuuuuu.

Mr T.: I’m not falling for that.

Even later that same day:

3rd Vole to 4th Vole: Who’s going to tell him Jock peed up his leg?

Thanks to:- The Venerable Buxton for the gallons of tea and the hot pot, Lady Buxton for the Badger pudding, [no badger was culled in the making or eating of this pudding], and everyone who worked so manfully and womanfully throughout the day.

Malcolm"

French-German Cultural Center, Ramallah

**Washita Battlefield National Historic Site** - National Register of Historic Places Ref # 66000633, date listed 10/15/1966

NW of Cheyenne on U.S. 283

Cheyenne, OK (Roger Mills County)

A National Historic Landmark (www.nps.gov/subjects/nationalhistoriclandmarks/list-of-nh...).

The Washita Battlefield lies in the center of Roger Mills County, which borders the Texas Panhandle. The essential features of the site are generally unchanged and the area of original military action stretches some six miles along the Washita River. The terrain of this battlefield was most important in the success of the campaign. Custer and his subordinate commanders used the various ridge lines and mountains as a shelter to completely encircle the camp and effectively reduce the escape route. Black Kettle's forces were thereby trapped in the valley, causing such a high number of killed.

The cultural collision between white man and Indian reached its tragic climax in the post-Civil War years on the Great Plains. The white pioneer-settler— with his farms, villages, rails and roads— aimed to domesticate the land, to own it, to locate permanently upon it. The nomadic Plains Indian— with his horse, mobile home and migratory buffalo herds— aimed to adapt to bountiful nature, not conquer and subdue it. Two such diametrically opposed philosophies were like flint and steel: whenever they met sparks flew.

The Battle of the Washita, November 27, 1868, was the first victory in a campaign destined to bring an end to the Plains Indian barrier. By demonstrating that U. S. troops would fight in the winter when the Indians preferred to be left alone, it dealt a heavy blow to Indian morale. It also demonstrated the practicality and effectiveness of winter campaigning in the long struggle against the hostile Plains Indians. (1)

Finishing the final panel discussion was with: Brian McClure â Department of Finance & Personnel, Martin McTague â FSB and David Magor â IRRV. Seamus McKee, Chairperson of the conference made some concluding remarks before breaking for lunch. Business Rates Conference 2016, which was part of the Chambré Public Affairs âEye on the Hillâ series of policy events, provided participants with a unique insight into an important programme of reform. The conference offered context and analysis from the Minister, senior officials, sector leaders and noted experts, the conference is perfectly timed to inform responses to the consultation, which closes a fortnight later. On 26 October 2015, Finance Minister Arlene Foster launched a public consultation on a wide-ranging Review of Northern Ireland's Non-Domestic Rating System. The consultation asks questions that touch upon every sector in Northern Ireland, giving respondents the chance to provide imaginative suggestions to improve how revenue is raised locally. Key questions include whether the 100% exemption for charities should be maintained, and how the system could be changed to better suit the demands of local business. Because of the Departmentâs willingness to engage creatively with the business community and other stakeholders, this consultation represents a rare opportunity to influence major change. Business rating is a vital form of taxation, raising some £592m of revenue for regional and local Government in Northern Ireland. WWL ALS successfully completes transport of the widest loads since records began through central London

Location: Central London – Canary Wharf in background

Description:

In May, 2013 Dragados Sisk Joint Venture (DSJV), the contractor constructing Crossrail’s Eastern running tunnels, approached WWL ALS (Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics Abnormal Load Services UK International Limited) to discuss the practicality of delivering Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Jessica’ from Stepney Green, east London through to Limmo Peninsular, east London as part of the Crossrail Eastern Tunnels contract C305.

The challenge from DSJV was to transport the 1,300 tonne Herrenknecht S-721 TBM and back-up equipment in as large individual components as possible to enable DSJV to achieve the relocation quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively.

For such a large-scale project nine months of intensive planning was required to determine a suitable route, obtain permits and liaise with multiple statutory authorities regarding the removal of street furniture, traffic management and street parking suspensions. The process required WWL ALS’ Project team to secure the necessary Be16 Special Order, VR1 and TTRO permits.

Extensive surveys were undertaken by WWL ALS to determine possible routes for this project. As part of this planning process innovative 3 dimensional laser mapping was used on dual carriageway sectors of the route with high traffic density, for scanning overhead gantry, bridge and tunnel heights and widths where manual means of checking clearances would be too hazardous.

Two optional routes were identified, and the least problematic option was selected to cause minimal disruption to residents and other road users. The route taken by all loads was eastbound via the A13 Limehouse Link Tunnel, with a height and width clearance of just a few centimetres for the largest items, and it also involved travelling contra-flow on a 750m section of this major arterial route (A13) for the two largest loads.

WWL ALS’ project team, headquartered in Hull, organised and closely supervised deliveries over a four week period for this challenging operation, concluding in April, 2014. TBM ‘Jessica’, which was dismantled and transported by road two months after completing a 2.7 kilometre underground drive from Pudding Mill Lane, involved a total of 26 x abnormal loads plus ancillary equipment. Due to the congested nature of the inner-city route, between seven and twelve police escort vehicles were required for each abnormal load movement in addition to the private escorts provided by WWL ALS.

An assortment of low loader and semi low loader vehicles were used, with a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 114 Tonnes, and the time taken from collection to delivery of cargo was on average 90 minutes per movement. The largest items were transported towards the end of the project, involving loads with maximum dimensions up to 18.20 metres long, 7.10 metres diameter wide, 4.35 metres high and maximum weight 72 tonnes. The Metropolitan Police have commented that “these were the widest loads moved within central London since records began”.

WWL ALS’ Project team ensured that TBM ‘Jessica’ made the smooth 5 kilometre journey from one of Europe’s largest mined caverns at Stepney Green to Limmo Peninsular (Canning Town), east London within the scheduled timescale and budget for the project, where the TBM has been reassembled to commence work on the final Crossrail tunnels between Limmo Peninsular and Victoria Dock.

Within the next month WWL ALS will commence the relocation of TBM ‘Ellie’ (a sister machine to TBM ‘Jessica’), again from Stepney Green to Limmo Peninsular.

I am soooooo pleased with how this dress came out. I used the Oliver and S Playdate Dress pattern and this was my first crack at it, and It went very well, no problems. I have to thank Nicole for her great tutorial on making this dress that I used the entire time and also for her great idea of adding a tab instead of the ruffles and buttons on the front yoke. So I used Berry kona cotton with Heather Ross Far Far Away I double gauze flowers as the yoke (with a kona white lining) and Bubble Gum kona cotton as the piping and accent color. I added a tab on the front left yoke with an embroidered flower to match the HR print. I love the beauty of this little dress, the practicality of the pockets and the pleats in the sleeves and on the dress that create beautiful dimension in the solid berry. Maybe next I can snap a picture of Lucy wearing it :)

The Kamares Aqueduct, also known as the Bekir Pasha Aqueduct, is a historic water supply system located in Larnaca, Republic of Cyprus. Spanning over a thousand years of history, this magnificent structure has played a crucial role in the development and sustenance of the city. Here is a concise history of the Kamares Aqueduct in 1000 words:

The origins of the Kamares Aqueduct can be traced back to the Roman period in Cyprus. During this time, Larnaca, then known as Kition, was an important city with a growing population. The Romans recognized the need for a reliable water supply system to meet the demands of the city's inhabitants and constructed the initial aqueduct.

The Roman aqueduct consisted of a series of stone arches that transported water from a source in the nearby mountains to the city. It showcased the advanced engineering skills of the Romans and demonstrated their commitment to urban development. The aqueduct served Larnaca for several centuries, ensuring a constant supply of water for domestic and agricultural purposes.

However, with the decline of the Roman Empire, the aqueduct fell into disrepair. It wasn't until the Ottoman era in the 18th century that the aqueduct was restored and expanded under the rule of Bekir Pasha, the regional governor of Larnaca. The aqueduct was renamed after him to honor his contributions.

Bekir Pasha's restoration efforts transformed the aqueduct into a more elaborate and grand structure. The new design featured a total of 75 stone arches, stretching over a length of approximately 2 kilometers. The aqueduct became an iconic landmark in Larnaca, symbolizing the city's rich history and architectural heritage.

The Bekir Pasha Aqueduct continued to serve as a vital water supply system throughout the Ottoman period. It provided water not only to the city's residents but also to the surrounding agricultural areas, facilitating the growth of crops and sustaining local livelihoods.

During the British colonial period in Cyprus, which began in 1878, the aqueduct underwent further renovations and maintenance. The British recognized the historical significance of the structure and took steps to preserve its integrity. The aqueduct remained functional and continued to deliver water to Larnaca until the mid-20th century.

However, with the advancement of modern infrastructure and the construction of a more efficient water supply network, the aqueduct gradually lost its practicality. By the late 1950s, it was no longer used as a water supply system. Instead, the aqueduct transitioned into a popular tourist attraction, admired for its architectural beauty and historical value.

In recent years, the Kamares Aqueduct has undergone extensive restoration projects to ensure its preservation for future generations. The Cypriot government, in collaboration with local authorities and heritage organizations, has invested in maintaining the structure's structural integrity and promoting its cultural significance.

Today, the Kamares Aqueduct stands as one of the most significant historical landmarks in Larnaca. It attracts visitors from around the world who marvel at its majestic arches and appreciate its historical significance. The aqueduct serves as a tangible reminder of Cyprus' rich heritage, showcasing the engineering achievements of the Romans and the Ottoman-era restoration efforts.

In conclusion, the Kamares Aqueduct, also known as the Bekir Pasha Aqueduct, is a remarkable testament to the ancient and more recent history of Larnaca, Republic of Cyprus. From its Roman origins to the Ottoman-era renovations and subsequent preservation efforts, the aqueduct has stood the test of time. It continues to captivate visitors with its architectural splendor and serves as a tangible link to the city's past.

Peter Jones has been the favourite 'corner shop' for Chelsea residents for over 100 years but its origins were a few minutes' walk away from Sloane Square.

In 1864 a young Welshman, Peter Jones (1843-1905), arrived in London and lost no time getting himself a job at Tarn's, a draper's in Newington, moving after a while to a larger shop in Leicester Square. Not long after, he opened his first shop in Hackney and, by 1871, he had moved twice more, first to Southampton Row and then to Chelsea, where he took a lease on two small shops in what is now Draycott Avenue.

He knocked the two shops into one and put in a new front before launching into business as a 'co-operative' draper. Less than a year later, disaster struck. The weakened party wall collapsed, the new front beam broke and the houses fell down.

It was rumoured that Peter Jones got substantial compensation from the landlord. Whether that is true or not, he was soon planning a bold expansion. In 1877 he moved again, this time to two small shops in the more exclusive part of Chelsea, at the Sloane Square end of the King's Road.

In 1903 Peter Jones fell ill and died two years later at the age of sixty-two. Without him at the helm the shop had begun to falter, and shortly after his death in 1905, another self-made man, John Lewis, proprietor of the John Lewis department store in Oxford Street, bought Peter Jones' share of the business for just £22,500.

John Lewis (1836-1928) became the Chairman and made his son, Spedan, a director.

Where John Lewis had succeeded so brilliantly with his Oxford Street shop, he failed with Peter Jones. One of his first acts was to cut the advertising expenditure from £2000 to nil and the business slumped by £20,000. By 1909, turnover had dropped below £95,000 and the ordinary shareholders were not pleased. Finally, in 1914, now aged seventy-eight and tired of failure, John Lewis handed the enterprise over to his son, Spedan.

Spedan Lewis (1885-1963) was a revolutionary thinker. He believed that the rewards from a business should be shared with those who created them and that workers were entitled to have a say in and be kept informed about the business in which they worked.

The design met the needs both of aesthetics and practicality. The architects achieved a continuous run of glass on the ground floor, thus optimising the window display space - a point upon which Spedan Lewis was most insistent - and inside, the shop was light, airy and open plan in complete contrast to the old premises.

Despite the physical changes, Peter Jones retained its ethos of service, quality products and value for money, and the residents of Chelsea continued to flock to its doors.

The shop survived the war and, as the economy started to recover, business once again flourished. 1963 was a milestone year when, for the first time, turnover reached £5 million.

The year 2000 saw the beginning of major changes. The Partnership put aside over £100 million on a complete renovation, which began in February 1999. The intention was to retain the shop's distinctive character but to provide all the facilities which would characterise the Partnership's newest department stores.

The refurbishment would increase the space by about 21%; add new services, including air conditioning; rationalise the geography of the upper floors; reposition the escalators in a dramatic central atrium and provide new restaurants on the second and sixth floors.

Two years later, on 28 June 2004, after five years and £107 million, the renovation of Peter Jones was finally completed, with the return of the Furniture department to the Fifth floor. The renewed Peter Jones was officially opened by the then Chairman Sir Stuart Hampson, in time for the centenary of the shop's acquisition by John Lewis in 1905.

There was more to art deco than elegance, glamour and eroticism. Its designs ushered in the modern world, says Sebastian Smee

Sex has traditionally been the easiest way to distinguish between them: where art nouveau had been feminine, art deco, the style that succeeded it, was masculine. Feminine meant curves and organic forms, an orgy of ornament; masculine meant straight lines, vitality, speed and streamlining. When art deco kicked in before the first world war, around 1910, the fine arts were still giddy from the revolutions of fauvism, primitivism and cubism. But it really blossomed in the roaring 20s, the age of the flapper: in the collective imagination art deco means women smoking, drinking cocktails and dressing like men.

But this masculinised version of art deco is misleading. It had been prophesied by the Italian Futurists, whose ringleader, the poet Tommaso Marinetti, declared in 1909 that "a roaring automobile, which seems to run like a machine gun, is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace". But on the other side of the Great War, machine guns no longer seemed such poetic similes.

By the 1920s - optimism being a hard condition to keep at bay - the heady infatuation with modernity that had whipped Futurism into being was once again gathering to a greatness, this time right across Europe.

Futurism's manifesto-driven, bully-boy dogma was spreading into something more complicated, sophisticated and subtle. We call it art deco (or we have since 1966; before then it was known as "Jazz Moderne", "Streamline Moderne" or simply "Moderne"), and though we tend to think of it as a swing in the zeitgeist towards the masculine, it was in many ways the feminine principle - or at least, feminine freedoms - that really got the boost.

The war itself had made this inevitable. There was more to it than just the absence, the loss, of so many men. Smaller historical contingencies played their part. In fashion, for instance, the need during the war to conserve heavy fabrics for the troops played a huge part in hastening women's acceptance of a lighter, slimmer silhouette. This in turn brought about other, unforeseen effects: new materials like rayon and muslin were too light to bear the weight of heavy jewellery, which encouraged the gradual introduction of lighter and stronger platinum in jewellery design.

For the most part, art deco refers to a style that became manifest in traditionally feminine areas of life: interiors, jewellery, glass, silver, ceramics and furniture. Its greatest designers were men, but one could argue that these men were mostly responding to women and their newfound appetites.

One of art deco's stars was Josephine Baker, who had been performing on stage since she was 13. "Too skinny and too dark" to make it in her native America, she sashayed on to the stage in Paris in 1925, danced a freely improvised version of the Charleston and became an overnight sensation.

Her legendary opening night performance with La Revue Nègre, musicians and dancers from Harlem, was at the Thétre des Champs Élysées. It was seen by the New Yorker's correspondent, Janet Flanner, who wrote that Baker "made her entry entirely nude except for a pink flamingo feather between her limbs; she was being carried upside down and doing the splits on the shoulder of a black giant... She was an unforgettable female ebony statue... The two elements had been established and were unforgettable - her magnificent dark body, a new model that to the French proved for the first time that black was beautiful, and the acute response of the white masculine public in the capital of hedonism of all Europe - Paris."

African art, or "l'art nègre", had seduced first the artistic avant-garde and then the wider Parisian public from about 1906, when Matisse and Picasso, awed by its freedom and directness, first integrated African sculpture into their art. Baker's arrival in Paris came as the confluence of this interest and an infatuation with jazz reached a high-water mark.

In another famous performance, at the Folies-Bergère in 1926, Baker starred as a jungle savage, wearing a skirt of 16 satin bananas that swung freely about her hips. She descended to the stage by climbing backwards down a tree, then whipped the audience into an erotic frenzy with an uninhibited improvised dance.

Her talents made her a huge celebrity, one of the most photographed people of her day, and the highest-earning entertainer in Europe. Many of the most famous designers of art deco incorporated her into their work, and she in turn became a prestigious client to the top designers. She was introduced to high society and to Paris's artistic elite and was adored by writers and artists, including Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Picasso, Georges Rouault, Alexander Calder and Adolf Loos.

Such was her impact that only a few weeks after she had arrived in Paris, "la Baker" featured as the guest artist at a gala celebration for the monumental Paris exhibition of 1925, by far the most important design event of the art deco era. Anna Pavlova, the great ballerina, had danced during the appetiser. The main course was reserved for Baker.

Singers and dancers aside, the star of that 1925 exhibition was Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, still the first designer to come to most people's minds when they think of art deco. Ruhlmann, who had first attracted notice in 1910 at the Salon d'Automne, was commissioned to design several of the pavilions, including the Salon pour une Ambassade and the Pavillon d'un Collectionneur. He used the opportunity to display his own eye-catchingly modern furniture designs alongside opulent works of art, including, most famously, Les Perruches, a massive painting of nude women holding brilliant parakeets by Jean Dupas.

Even Ruhlmann's materials courted the exotic. For the grand piano that dominated the floor of the music room in the Pavillon d'un Collectionneur, he used Macassar ebony and amboyna woods applied with ivory detailing. But such sumptuousness and daring (he also favoured chromium and tortoiseshell trimming) was offset by classical designs, their formal restraint. In this, and in his penchant for designing expensive one-offs rather than modern designs for mass production, Ruhlmann came to be venerated as the foremost of the "traditionalist" art deco designers, a diverse group keen on reinterpreting late 18th- and early 19th-century French cabinetry.

The "modernists", by contrast, were influenced by art movements such as Cubism, Futurism, De Stilj and the Bauhaus. A utopian heartbeat pulsed through their ideas, and the affordability, mass-producibility and ideological "clean-ness" of their designs eventually put them in the ascendant.

But in the 1920s, with the stock market still riding high, Ruhlmann's designs made him a star: their combination of fine craftsmanship, elegant style and exotic finish seemed to embody the new spirit. He was the most prominent of the designers asked to work on a project that - more than any other - epitomised the new possibilities of leisure, glamour and luxury travel that define art deco: the Normandie.

Designed to be the biggest, the fastest and the most sumptuous passenger ship the world had ever seen, the Normandie set a transatlantic speed record on its maiden voyage in 1935. On board were Madame Albert LeBrun, wife of the French president, and the writer Colette. Later passengers included Fred Astaire, Gloria Swanson, David Niven, Joe Kennedy and his sons Joe Jr and John F Kennedy.

"The whole place is like a setting for a ballet," wrote Harold Nicholson to his wife, Vita Sackville-West. Some of the most extraordinary features of this setting were the product of radical new technology. The ship's dramatic, flared bow with a hollowed-out contour at the waterline and a bulblike shape at the foot - the ultimate in aquatic streamlining - was the innovation of Russian architect and engineer, Vladimir Yourkevitch. He also introduced turbo-electric power to propel the Normandie; his innovations cut the voyage from Le Havre to New York from a week to just over four days.

The Normandie's interior was designed by many of the biggest stars of the 1925 Paris exhibition, the leading lights of art deco, including Ruhlmann, the glass designer René Lalique, Jean Dupas and Jean Dunand, who worked on panels for the ship's smoking room and sections of the first-class salon. They were done in an Egyptian style (considered ultra-modern) and depicted fishing, dancing, horse-taming, grape-picking and hunting. Dunand and Dupas, a muralist, collaborated on a 32-gilded panel piece for the grand salon, the Chariot of Aurora, an allegorical history of navigation, and one of the greatest examples of art deco.

The Nazi occupation of France prevented the ship from returning there, and for two years it languished in New York harbour. Then, after Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt seized the ship and trooped it for war. It was renamed the SS Lafayette, in honour of the Franco-American alliance, and its art deco fittings were dismantled with a haste that proved to be reckless. On the afternoon of February 9 1942, a week before it was scheduled to sail to Boston, a spark from a welder's torch set alight the life jackets temporarily stored in the Grand Salon. Within minutes, the Normandie was in flames, and within four hours, it lay gutted and overturned. It had cost $60m to build and was sold for scrap at $161,000.

The symbolism of the whole debacle - French opulence meeting a grisly end in a new atmosphere of war-time austerity; European self-indulgence sunk by the US practicality - is almost too easy. And it conveniently obscures the fact that it was America - and New York in particular - that gave birth to some of the most extraordinary examples of art deco extravagance. If transatlantic travel was emblematic of the new freedom in the 1920s, New York's astounding skyscrapers built in the final years of that decade suggested freedom was nothing without might - in the form of sheer, imposing height. Nothing bears witness to this more than the Chrysler building, still, perhaps, the most distinctive landmark on New York's skyline.

Here, surely, the notion that art deco was masculine in tone had found its ideal incarnation? Yet compare the Chrysler building with the boxy monoliths that have sprung up around Manhattan since and it begins to look beguilingly slender, jazzy and -dare one say it? - feminine.

The building was the improvised child of two ambitious men: the architect William van Alen and the millionaire Walter Chrys-ler. Poignantly, its impossibly high spire emerged (in the words of Van Alen, "like a butterfly from its cocoon" in October 1929 - more commonly remembered for the Wall Street crash, which signalled the end of art deco extravagance.

Van Alen, like so many creative Americans in the 1920s, had studied in Paris, and returned intoxicated by the new modern style: "No old stuff for me!" was his credo. "No bestial copyings of arches and colyums and cornishes[sic]! Me, I'm new! Avanti!" He was commissioned by William H Reynolds, a property entrepreneur, to build the world's tallest building, but the financing was soon taken over by Chrysler - a "real-life Gatsby", according to the New Yorker (itself, and to this day very visibly, a child of the jazz age).

The competition to earn kudos and acclaim by building tall was positively febrile at that time, and the Chrysler building's spire was really a device to out-do the Bank of Manhattan Company's building at 40 Wall Street. Less than a year later, Al Smith's Empire State building out-muscled them both in what was fast becoming an unseemly sky-grab.

But one would never say the Chrysler building was eclipsed, for its most astonishing feature was, and remains today, almost as dazzling as the sun itself. The heaped radiator caps, with wing-spans of 15ft, around the elongated dome, were clad in diamond-honed KA-2 steel, which gave them an incandescent glow visible for miles around.

The building remains as dazzling and iconic today, a symbol of glamour and hubris, and of a time when ornament was nothing to shy away from: it could be successfully incorporated into the very structure of a skyscraper.

Van Alen, who was all but forgotten almost as soon as the building was finished, had "managed to perfect", wrote the New Yorker, "as much as F Scott Fitzgerald or Duke Ellington, the uniquely American style of the honky-tonk sublime", the "art deco wonder of the world".

Dr. Michael Bröning has presented his book and moderated the discussion, The Politics of Change in Palestine: State-Building and Non-Violent Resistance.

“The Politics of Change in Palestine” discusses these changes. The book contradicts the prevalent myth that incompetent, corrupt, and uncompromising Palestinian decision-makers are responsible for the lasting stalemate in the Middle-East Peace Process. The book highlights recent political developments in Palestine that fundamentally redefine important parameters of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These include the re-invention of Hamas, reforms within the Fatah movement, state-building efforts of the Palestinian Authority and the surge of non-violent resistance.

Amateur (or maybe less so) girls in some great high heels. I suspect that amateur girls wear heels for fashion, at the behest of their partner, or because they love wearing them. Much cooler than paid models who are probably wearing heels because they're getting paid to do it.

The vague element of increased practicality of heels that are slightly thicker than stilettos is a mirage, but makes this style of heel possibly cooler than a stiletto. :)

Here's the Pima Country Air Museum's F7F with as-built looking colors on the main gear, whieel, doors, wells, etc. There was a time when the US Navy wanted specific colors on the inside of spaces like gear wells, and the specific color White eventually became the standard, but here you can see the practicality of WWII production was retained while the Tigercats were built - the airframe was overall Glossy Sea Blue, as were the gear legs, wheels, gear well, inside of gear doors, etc.

Here the leg is glossy and the inside of the door is not - was it painted with flat paint/lacquer? Is it flat black or a very dark green? Is it standard Sea Blue without being rubbed out?
