Ford's forth generation Focus, codenamed C519 launched in 2018, replacing the previous C346 Focus in markets outside North America.
One semi-crossover variant, the Focus Active, was due to be built in China for export to the US, but was cancelled due to a trade dispute.
The C519 model retained the 5-door hatchback, saloon and estate models of the previous version, with the added Active variant a high-riding version of the hatchback or estate.
Most Focus C519 models are powered by 3-cylinder Ecoboost engines of 1.0L or 1.5L capacity, while 1.5L and 2.0L Panther 4-cylinder diesels are available, but with lower customer takeup due to market shift away from Diesels. A 2.3L Ecoboost is available in the performance ST trim.
The model shown is the high-specification Titanium Hatchback in one of the louder reddish-orange hues, which currently resides in my driveway (not driving much during COVID) as my company car.
I love the colour, and the practicality and functional performance are strong points. The fuel economy, and the lack of luxury feel are negatives.
Landings
Our usual inventory includes landing type pieces reclaimed from projects throughout New England. They typically fall into three categories:
1) Originals – originally quarried as such
2) Hand split from reclaimed block material
3) Sawn and thermaled – fabricated from large pier and bridge abutment blocks
Appearance:
Whether they are custom hand split or sawn and thermaled, our goal is to maintain the nice aged and weathered sides of the landing. We call this our “Best of Both Worlds” look blending century old patina with the practicality of a true, consistent, all season tread surface. Sometimes we can offer an aged weathered top with a sawn underside and all other surfaces untouched for that all natural look.
Size:
When a step or tread exceeds a depth of 20” or greater, we refer to these pieces as a step/landing or just a landing when they exceed 24” in depth. The most common depth of these slabs is generally between 3’-4’ with a thickness or rise in the 7”-8” range.
Use:
As the broad piece at either the door entry or at the bottom of a step/stairway to land safely and step off easily in different directions

I seriously need to find lamps of some sort to illuminate these things in my light box, but I live in an apartment of recent college graduate males which means that things like that tend not to be readily available. Any graininess is due to me having to seriously amp up brightness and contrast because I'm a fool. Also, the design is based on these even if the name came from these. I'd like to think that it's not damaging to my masculinity to build LEGO robots based on kittens, especially if the primary feature borrowed is a pair of hilariously wide-set eyes.

The reason we were deployed - to ensure transit of the lifeblood of industrial economies.
The Mary R Koch was a 274,330-tonne combined ore carrier and oil tanker. The ship was named after Mary Robinson Koch, wife of American industrialist Fred C Koch.
She was built at the Uljanik, Brodogradiliste l Tvornica Dizel Motora shipyard in Pula in Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, (now Croatia). Her two sister ships, the Tafala and the Torne were delivered to the Swedish company Trafikaktiebolaget Grengesberg in 1974. A further sister-ship named Kanchenjunga was built as a pure oil carrier with no ore capability.
Under Greek management the Mary R Koch (callsign A8QU) was time-chartered to Exxon for three years from going into service in 1975. Subsequently she made spot voyages arranged by the oil-trading division of Koch Industries. Around 1980 Koch Shipping was created and the Mary R Koch was managed directly from Wichita, with officers and crew being supplied by an agency in Piraeus. Due to severe corrosion problems with piping in the 'void space' double bottom the ship transferred to the bulk-ore trade in the early 1980s.
The four ships of this design were built to prove the practicality of the Kam-e-Wa variable pitch propellor system in high SHP applications. Although the system did function well the high initial and subsequent maintenance costs associated with having two 20,000 HP B&W diesel engines, together with the inferior steel used for the cargo piping, compounded by the depressed tanker market at the time, meant that they were never viable economically.

Anywhere in Dubai, it's not hard to find over-the-top displays of opulence. But here in the world's only (allegedly) self-proclaimed 7-star hotel, built on its own island in the Arabian Gulf, the Burj al Arab stands out among the crowd. Amid the Disneyland-like resorts, malls and other attractions popping up around Dubai, designed to woo tourists with the appearance of wealth and luxury, the Burj al Arab is one place where this appearance is more than just a facade. Here, what appears golden is... actually gold. This is the real deal.
I enjoyed a breakfast here on my last full day of almost two months of travelling - and realized that exception service is not so much a factor of what is offered, but is about anticipation - being one step ahead of your guests to respond to their needs before they even realize it's what they want.
Without a doubt, the hotel's reputation owes a great deal to the exclusive environment it propagates. Accessible only for guests or visitors with a reservation, a group of tourists can often be found at the foot of the pier, craning heads for a glimpse and snapshot of the hotel from outside the gate. The almost unbelievable myths help too... yes, you can arrive here by helicopter, and yes some guests are provided with a Rolls Royce and driver to shop and see the city.

A field test of vintage and vintage-styled equipment for an upcoming "expedition" planned for the summer.
Unlike the first field test, this second outing resulted in no equipment failures. I did, however, again have a problem with heel blisters, although less severe than during the initial hike in the "big boots." The second outing was of longer distance and duration -- about three miles in total -- with considerably more scrambling up and down slopes.
I have not yet repaired my leather whip holder, so for practicality I secured the whip with plastic zip ties. Not "period authentic," I know, but it worked.
I'm debating over "the look," or specifically, "the hat" to wear during the actual expedition: this safari-style fedora, or the pith helmet. Either one is appropriate circa-1910 style, so it really comes down to which hat the chicks think makes me look dreamier.

While Triumph enjoyed considerable success with the estate version of their 2000 saloon, Rover seemed happy to leave that sector of the market entirely open to their old rival. That is until coachbuilders FLM Panelcraft in Battersea, London produced their own estate conversion of the P6 called the Estourer.
Having been officially approved by Rover, the conversions were completed by H.R. Owen and Crayford Engineering, with bodywork executed by FLM Panelcraft. However, in trying to maintain the car’s sleek styling, the practicality of the estate bodywork was somewhat compromised and, with the relatively high cost of the conversion, only around 150 were built.
This 1974 Estourer Automatic was sold new to a Mr Jackson, and delivered on 9th August to coincide with the new number plate change. It has had a further nine owners according to the accompanying V5C, passing to a Swedish Gentleman in 2004 who exported the car to the Malmo area. A file of correspondence lists a number of jobs completed during its time overseas, including work to the brakes and attention to sort out low oil pressure. The car covered some 6,300 miles during this period.
The Estourer subsequently returned to the UK in 2012, at which point it was given a fresh MOT which shows no advisories. The file includes a further seven old MOTs and plenty of bills and invoices, which help substantiate the total indicated mileage of 56,164 miles as correct. It does not have a current MOT and having covered just six miles over the last six years, will require some light recommissioning before use once more. Bidders are advised that we have not attempted to start the vehicle since it has arrived onsite.
Rare, unusual and attractive, this low-mileage P6 Estate looks very smart and has a lovely black leather interior. It should take little to turn it back into one of the nicest examples in existence.

“The Politics of Change in Palestine” discusses these changes. The book contradicts the prevalent myth that incompetent, corrupt, and uncompromising Palestinian decision-makers are responsible for the lasting stalemate in the Middle-East Peace Process. The book highlights recent political developments in Palestine that fundamentally redefine important parameters of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These include the re-invention of Hamas, reforms within the Fatah movement, state-building efforts of the Palestinian Authority and the surge of non-violent resistance.

There is no graceful way to climb up and into a Jeep Wrangler. The angles are awkward, the height is high and the interior is anything but plush and comfortable. This, I realized, as I hiked myself up and behind the vehicle’s steering wheel around five o'clock on a Friday afternoon, incidentally dressed in a rather restricting skirt.
My first thought: This is not my type of vehicle. Yes, I look for function and practicality in a vehicle – and the Wrangler Sahara embodies both of these traits; but what it lacked, in my opinion, was the necessary ease associated with handling daily errands and long weekend drives. Wrangler’s rugged capabilities weren’t priority on my checklist of car
must-haves.
And then, on my long weekend drive to Bay City, Michigan, rain began to patter against the Wrangler’s windshield as I was cruising the expressway at 70 mph. After a few minutes, it fell harder, then harder yet, until the wipers were whipping to and fro at max speed. The windshield, which moments earlier seemed irritatingly close to my face and extremely vertical, was now a godsend, offering a close and clear view of lane markers, despite inclement weather.
The height of the muscular truck, which had before seemed cumbersome and distinctly guy-oriented, was now an attribute that I was thankful for – perched high enough above neighboring drivers to see what lay before me on the expressway.
As I drove, I counted the redeeming qualities of the Red Rock painted Wrangler Sahara, nipping my initial perceptions of the vehicle in the bud, one by one.
It was maneuverable, offering the height and function of a truck, without the dragging weight of a bed in back. It was roomy, offering four doors, five seats and plenty of cargo space with a clean interior too - no nonsense gadgets or unnecessary frills. It was safe, offering multi-stage front air bags, optional seat-mounted side air bags, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability, Electronic Roll Mitigation, ABS and side-impact door beams.
And one characteristic that nobody can deny – the new Wrangler carries on the classic sport attitude traditionally associated with Jeep. In it, one can’t help allowing a bit of the fun-loving, off-road attitude of Wrangler to rub off on them - especially if it's warm enough to ride minus the Freedom Top (Jeep's 3-piece modular hard top).
I had conformed. I may not be heading off to the next Camp Jeep or slapping on a “If you can read this, flip me over” bumper sticker, but I had grown a soft spot for the Wrangler Sahara that made my would-have-been taunting drive one of ease.
Switching on the high beams and considering the stability of the slightly frozen farm ground surrounding us, I turned to my passenger, who raised an eyebrow to my mischievous grin.
“Interested in a little off-roading?” I asked.

This antique Japanese bedding sheet is made up of five panels of indigo kasuri (ikat) cotton. Available to buy here: www.etsy.com/transaction/96723737 Likely to have been made at home during the Meiji / Taisho era. It has been well looked after with a number of hand stitched boro* patches. As can be seen, four of the five panels appear more grey than the fifth panel which is a light blue. Large: 168cm x 158cm Antique Japanese folk textile typical of the utilitarian indigo fabrics of the era. *Boro means scrap/rag of cloth and is also used to describe this category of collectible textile. The principles of "yuyo no bi" (beauty of practicality) and "mottai nai" (no waste) are fundamental to these folk textiles.
I live in Australia, near the beach (actually, fairly close to the famous Bell's Beach).
During the 1970s the growing Surfing culture flowed over into automotive design here in Australia. The result was the Panel Van - these were developed from the local large rear-drive cars built here, using the Coupe-Utility as a base, but enclosing the rear load area with a high-roof. The rear panel behind the seats was also removed, allowing access to the converted load area.
Great for surfing, and camping by the beach. Great for a cuddle with a pretty girl too, and hence the colloquial name 'shaggin-wagon' was coined.

The two companies Ford and Holden dominated the market, but a strong third was Chrysler Australia, Their local large car was developed from the 1960s Valiant, and the Panel Van version was known as the Sundowner.
I have applied the classic Sundowner graphic to what could have been a great retro product from the early 2000s Chrysler catalog, the PT Cruiser. With a longer wheelbase, 2-door-only, and panel van blanked windows, this would make the perfect low-cost surfing wagon for a new generation.

Seamus McKee, Chairperson of the conference made some concluding remarks before breaking for lunch. Business Rates Conference 2016, which was part of the Chambré Public Affairs âEye on the Hillâ series of policy events, provided participants with a unique insight into an important programme of reform. The conference offered context and analysis from the Minister, senior officials, sector leaders and noted experts, the conference is perfectly timed to inform responses to the consultation, which closes a fortnight later. On 26 October 2015, Finance Minister Arlene Foster launched a public consultation on a wide-ranging Review of Northern Ireland's Non-Domestic Rating System. The consultation asks questions that touch upon every sector in Northern Ireland, giving respondents the chance to provide imaginative suggestions to improve how revenue is raised locally. Key questions include whether the 100% exemption for charities should be maintained, and how the system could be changed to better suit the demands of local business. Because of the Departmentâs willingness to engage creatively with the business community and other stakeholders, this consultation represents a rare opportunity to influence major change. Business rating is a vital form of taxation, raising some £592m of revenue for regional and local Government in Northern Ireland. However, it is also a significant expense for the businesses that are the lifeblood of the local economy, and can act as a particular disincentive to smaller enterprises who want to invest and expand. At the other end of the spectrum, charities in Northern Ireland benefit significantly from the current rating system, enjoying a 100% rates exemption.

It wasn't too long ago that minivans reigned supreme as the go-to choice of growing families across the country. In recent years, however, minivan sales have declined due to the arrival of seven-passenger crossover SUVs, which allow moms and dads to look and feel a little more stylish while transporting their broods. These crossovers don't offer as much utility, however. So what if an automaker attempted to marry the "cool factor" of a crossover SUV and the unbeatable practicality of a minivan's shoebox-like shape? The result would probably end up something like the 2009 Ford Flex.
With styling inspired by vintage vacuum cleaners and an overall shape that resembles a super-sized cross between a first-generation Scion xB and a Mini Cooper Clubman, it's safe to say there's nothing else quite like the Ford Flex on the road today. Though the Flex shares its underpinnings and powertrain with the capable but anonymously styled Taurus X, its daring design sets it apart from the legions of look-alike crossovers roaming our roads. Fortunately for Ford, the Flex's appeal is much more than skin-deep. For example, it offers one of the highest-quality interiors we've seen from Ford in a long time, replete with plentiful soft-touch surfaces and an expensive-looking design. Ford's innovative Sync MP3 player and phone interface system is also available, as is a Vista sunroof, which consists of four fixed glass panels that brighten up the cabin for second- and third-row occupants. Add a reasonably powerful 3.5-liter V6 to the mix, along with available all-wheel drive, and you've got all the ingredients of a crowd-pleasing people mover.
Featuring conventional rear doors instead of the maximally convenient sliding variety, the Flex nonetheless constitutes a compelling package for families who just can't stomach the idea of rolling in a blatantly utilitarian conveyance. Seven adults can fit comfortably inside its elongated cabin, and access to the third row is a cinch with the optional power-folding second-row seats, though a bit of a pain without them. The second-row seats also slide fore and aft, while an optional refrigerator inside the rear console keeps perishables cool while driving. With the rear seats flipped down and the second row flipped forward, the Flex offers a large cargo area, though minivans are still considerably more capacious.
It's hard to predict whether the new Ford Flex will be a success, but Ford deserves credit for boldly bringing such an unconventional yet well-thought-out offering into the marketplace. In theory, the Flex should appeal to any family looking for a winning combination of panache and practicality. We suggest that consumers looking at either a minivan or a large crossover SUV give it strong consideration.

THE BMW ISETTA
Popular during the 1950s and 1960s, the diminutive 'bubble car' or 'cabin scooter' is currently enjoying a revival of interest - not surprisingly given the congested state of today's urban roads. Nowadays though, the Bubble's attraction has just as much to do with fashion as practicality. One of the more successful designs of the cabin scooter's heyday was the BMW Isetta, a design the German firm manufactured under license from its Italian originator Iso. The name means 'little Iso'. Renzo Rivoltas Iso was not selling well in its native Italy, faced with stiff competition from the FIAT 500 and 600, and it would be left to BMW to fully exploit the design's potential.
Although at first glance a three-wheeler, the German-built Isetta used a pair of closely spaced wheels at the rear and was powered by a BMW single-cylinder four-stroke motorcycle engine of 247cc, replacing the original's noisy two-stroke motor. The coachwork of early examples featured a side-hinged single door at the front, roll-top sunroof, and fixed side windows, while the steering wheel and dashboard were attached to the door to facilitate entry. The two-seater Isettas most popular accessory, understandably so given the limited interior space, was a small luggage rack mounted at the rear. Later (1957-onwards) models incorporated sliding side windows for better ventilation. These improved models displaced 297cc, and the 'big' Isetta 300 was reckoned capable of 65mph and 55mpg. Approximately 162,000 Isetta's had been made by the time production ceased in 1962.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
The BMW Isetta 300 is considered to be one of the most iconic 'bubblecars' of its era. This particular Isetta is an extraordinary example featuring a complete restoration by who many believe is the best in the business. 501305 was sent to Woodstock, Georgia so that Werner Schwark from Isettas R US can perform one of his world class restorations. A very complete, low-mileage and matching numbers candidate was chosen; shortly thereafter the restoration was performed in 2018-2019 and finished in its original color combination. Since completion, only 17 miles have been recorded on the odometer. The car is equipped with a rear luggage rack, air vents and stylish Coco mats. Accompanied by its file, rear basket, as well some documentation of the restoration, this charming microcar is sure to provide its next custodian with enjoyment.
As this writer can testify, an Isetta provides enjoyment both for its driver and those that you pass on the road. This is a great example with which to experience this 'bubble' car legend.

This year I was able to escape the snow and join Fred in Scottsdale for sunshine, cars, and music! I also drove down to Tucson to meet Doug for lunch and spend a nice evening visting with Richard and Lola.
The Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza hotel opened in 1931 and is a National Historic Landmark and charter member of Historic Hotels of America. This Cincinnati hotel features breathtaking French Art Deco that has been restored to its 1930's grandeur. With rare Brazilian rosewood paneling, indirect German silver-nickel light fixtures and soaring ceiling murals, our historic Cincinnati hotel is one of the world's finest examples of French Art Deco.
The plans for the Carew Tower and Netherland Plaza Hotel were announced in August 1929 and the project was completed in January 1931. The financing for the buildings came from the Emery family, which had made its fortune in processing the by-products of Cincinnati’s stockyards. John Emery hired Walter W. Ahlschlager and Colonel William Starrett for the construction. Starrett was known as the builder of the Lincoln Memorial and the Empire State Building. Ahlschlager designed the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee and the Hotel Intercontinental in Chicago.
The Carew Tower and Netherland Plaza Hotel were designed to be a “city within a city.” The concept was new in 1929 but Cincinnati were willing to gamble that the combination of shops, department stores, offices and hotel would work. The practicality was made apparent again in 1990 when the Belvedere Corporation invested in the re-development of the Carew Tower Shopping Arcade and Office Tower, featuring a collection of shops, restaurants, a 13,000 square feet fitness center complete with lap pool, and 500,000 square feet of office space.
Emery’s vision of the Carew Tower led him to make some bold financial moves - which worked in his favor. Emery had approached the bank to underwrite financing for the “city within a city” project. The bank did not share the vision of the multi-purpose facility and declined the loan. Emery sold all of his stocks and securities, despite advice from his financial advisors. The plans and financing for the Carew Tower were in place, and then the stock market crashed. Had Emery left his stocks and securities tied up in the stock market, he would have lost everything. But instead, with his money going toward the building of Carew Tower, the project could continue as planned. In fact, the construction project became one of the city’s largest employers.
As the construction on the hotel came to a close, the name St. Nicholas Plaza was selected. Just before the grand opening, the Cincinnati Realty Company (operators of the Hotel Sinton) filed an injunction against the new hotel’s name claiming that it had purchased the rights to the St. Nicholas name when the old St. Nicholas Hotel closed years before. Having invested heavily into the monogramming of linens, china, silverware and stationery, the new hotel’s name was quickly changed to St. Netherland Plaza. The St. came from Starrett’s (for the builder), the Netherland came from the thought that the hotel occupied the space between the Ohio River and the hills, and Plaza was from the original choice. The name was abbreviated to “St. NP.” Eventually, the “St.” was dropped and “Netherland Plaza” is the name that is now famous.
When the hotel opened in January 1931, it boasted the very latest in technology and comfort. The 800 guestrooms featured ultra-modern baths, high-speed automatic elevators, an internal broadcast system both for convenience and safety, and an automatic electric garage. The eleven kitchens that served the hotel’s dining and banquet rooms were specified, ordered and installed in only five weeks. The finest Van Range equipment was so exactingly chosen that the kitchens were able to produce a seven-course meal for 1,800 guests on opening night.

There is no graceful way to climb up and into a Jeep Wrangler. The angles are awkward, the height is high and the interior is anything but plush and comfortable. This, I realized, as I hiked myself up and behind the vehicle’s steering wheel around five o'clock on a Friday afternoon, incidentally dressed in a rather restricting skirt.
My first thought: This is not my type of vehicle. Yes, I look for function and practicality in a vehicle – and the Wrangler Sahara embodies both of these traits; but what it lacked, in my opinion, was the necessary ease associated with handling daily errands and long weekend drives. Wrangler’s rugged capabilities weren’t priority on my checklist of car
must-haves.
And then, on my long weekend drive to Bay City, Michigan, rain began to patter against the Wrangler’s windshield as I was cruising the expressway at 70 mph. After a few minutes, it fell harder, then harder yet, until the wipers were whipping to and fro at max speed. The windshield, which moments earlier seemed irritatingly close to my face and extremely vertical, was now a godsend, offering a close and clear view of lane markers, despite inclement weather.
The height of the muscular truck, which had before seemed cumbersome and distinctly guy-oriented, was now an attribute that I was thankful for – perched high enough above neighboring drivers to see what lay before me on the expressway.
As I drove, I counted the redeeming qualities of the Red Rock painted Wrangler Sahara, nipping my initial perceptions of the vehicle in the bud, one by one.
It was maneuverable, offering the height and function of a truck, without the dragging weight of a bed in back. It was roomy, offering four doors, five seats and plenty of cargo space with a clean interior too - no nonsense gadgets or unnecessary frills. It was safe, offering multi-stage front air bags, optional seat-mounted side air bags, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability, Electronic Roll Mitigation, ABS and side-impact door beams.
And one characteristic that nobody can deny – the new Wrangler carries on the classic sport attitude traditionally associated with Jeep. In it, one can’t help allowing a bit of the fun-loving, off-road attitude of Wrangler to rub off on them - especially if it's warm enough to ride minus the Freedom Top (Jeep's 3-piece modular hard top).
I had conformed. I may not be heading off to the next Camp Jeep or slapping on a “If you can read this, flip me over” bumper sticker, but I had grown a soft spot for the Wrangler Sahara that made my would-have-been taunting drive one of ease.
Switching on the high beams and considering the stability of the slightly frozen farm ground surrounding us, I turned to my passenger, who raised an eyebrow to my mischievous grin.
“Interested in a little off-roading?” I asked.

Whether they are custom hand split or sawn and thermaled, our goal is to maintain the nice aged and weathered sides of the landing. We call this our “Best of Both Worlds” look blending century old patina with the practicality of a true, consistent, all season tread surface. Sometimes we can offer an aged weathered top with a sawn underside and all other surfaces untouched for that all natural look.
Size:
When a step or tread exceeds a depth of 20” or greater, we refer to these pieces as a step/landing or just a landing when they exceed 24” in depth. The most common depth of these slabs is generally between 3’-4’ with a thickness or rise in the 7”-8” range.
Use:
As the broad piece at either the door entry or at the bottom of a step/stairway to land safely and step off easily in different directions

A view inside a Jowett Jupiter showing the tubular chassis. The Jupiter shared many mechanical components with the Javelin but the saloon did not have a completely separate chassis. When conceiving the Javelin, Jowetts had not planned for a sports car to follow but were rather cajoled into it by various motoring luminaries outside the company who were very taken with the Javelin's performance and reasoned a lighter car would be even more impressive. As it happened, Jowetts found themselves in the same boat as Rover and Triumph - to name but two - short of steel if they failed to export, but plenty of aluminium available to build a car hopefully attractive to foreign markets. Gerald Palmer, the clever designer of the Javelin had returned to MG so for a sports chassis design Jowetts were introduced to the impressively titled Professor Dr Dipl Ing Robert Eberan von Eberhorst. He had worked pre-war with Ferdinand Porsche on Auto Union racing cars. Funnily enough, he worked most on engine design, but we will gloss over that. Eberhorst's chassis design was pretty much standard good practice for the time. One requirement called for the use of special and expensive elliptical tubes, but Jowett initially ignored this small detail. When chassis torsion problems became apparent (typically the doors stuck shut) the chassis was strengthened in production by welding angle iron along the tube underside. Teutonic precision meets Yorkshire practicality.
