Finland occupies the most northerly position in Europe, with one-quarter of its territory located above the Arctic Circle. At such high latitudes agriculture faces natural challenges; in winter, night lasts uninterrupted for nearly two months in the north, while in the south the sun appears for no more than six hours daily. In this premature twilight the snow is scattered with gleaming greenhouses, where the daily duration of photosynthesis is extended by artificial lighting, as here near Sauvo, in the south-western part of the country. Using this method, Finland manages to produce 35,500 tonnes of tomatoes per year; but its greatest field of exploitation remains timber. It exploits pine and birch forests that cover 70 percent of its land and provide more than one third of its export revenues. Residue from the timber industry and waste from cutting trees serve as fuel, an important source of renewable energy that covers 20 percent of the country’s energy consumption and 10 percent of its electricity consumption.

This is the second exercise in the Lighting 102 article at strobist.com, which examines the distance of light.

 

The point of this exercise was to show that using a) distance and b) aperture we can control what David refers to as depth of field of light.

This is a photograph from the second running of the newly situated Irish 3/4 Marathon (formerly the Athlone 3/4) which was held in Longwood, Enfield, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 8th of October 2017 at 10:00. The event is positioned perfectly in the calendar as a key training race before the Dublin City Marathon at the end of the month. This year was the second year that the event was held in Longwood, Co. Meath which is now well known for its hosting of the Longwood 10KM/5KM annual races and a host venue for East of Ireland Marathon series marathons on a bi-annual basis. The race started and finished at Longwood GAA club just outside the village of Longwood. It followed an anti-clockwise course around the beautiful picturesque countryside of south Meath. The course went through the townlands of Longwood, Castlerickard, Killyon, Hill-of-Down, Anneville and Ashfield Clonard, Blackshare, Stoneyford and back to Longwood. The river Boyne and Blackwater were crossed as was the Royal Canal and the Dublin-Sligo Railway line at Hill-of-Down. Overall this was a very different course to the previous years in Athlone. The overall elevation of the course works out at 3/4 of the total elevation of the Dublin Marathon course. What most stood out about today's race was the course and how the countryside around it looked on a beautiful almost perfect Autumn morning. There was a large local effort with stewarding and many local people watched from their gardens as the race passed by. The organisation of the race was first class with every detail taken care of from the start until the finish. There was some rain showers from about 13:00 onwards but these soon passed.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

 

     ►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

     ►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

     ►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

     ►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

Edinburgh Castle is a fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century its principal role was as a military base with a large garrison. Its importance as a historic monument was recognised from the 19th century, and various restoration programmes have been carried out since. As one of the most important fortresses in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts, from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions.

 

Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval defences were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The most notable exceptions are St Margaret's Chapel, which dates from the early 12th century and is the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh,[2] the Royal Palace, and the early-16th-century Great Hall. Working through lighting 102 for 2010. I had a hard time finding a place with enough distance to get this assignment done. I had to go to my trusty model again. He is such a plseasure to work with. Never complains and holds positions for days.

Background black velvet. This is the second of four portraits taken with the same camera and sitter position, but with four different modes of use of the pop up flash: direct, diffused, and ceiling bounced, and card bounced. All were shot at f8 at 75mm and were cropped in width but not height.

 

All were subject to exactly the same processing: ex-camera jpeg, with Picasa's auto exposure-fix button taking care of differences in exposure. I couldn't be bothered trying to set flash power more accurately than "looks good enough in camera LCD", which in practice was about a stop in variation.

 

This is the second, with the flash diffused with a Fong Puffer copy diffuser like this. The next, with ceiling bounced pop-up flash, can be seen here.

 

Because the flash power drop of the diffuser might confuse ADI flash control it was set to plain TTL for this shot. It couldn't reach the 1.65m to the sitter, and looked about two stops down. Raising ISO to 400 brought it within reach. The in-camera high ISO noise processing was on. Because the exposure was good very litte adjustment was made to the ex-camera jpeg by the auto exposure fix of Picasa which was standard for this series of comparisons. I can't easily see any noise or noise reduction artefacts in this image. They might have been visible if there had been more dark detail in the image.

 

There is a slight reduction in contrast in the image, compared to the previous direct flash image. There is some shadow fill in being provided by reflection of the more widely diffused flash from the white walls of the room. This can be seen clearly in the reduced darkening of the top of the head. Given the large size of the room the amount of this shadow fill quite surprised me.

American Speedfest 8 Returned to Brands Hatch for another Fantastic American themed weekend Featuring the likes of Euro Nascar Legends and even Angelo American Formula 5000's Racing this weekender event was shaping up to be a good one.

 

The First Day was mostly focused on Qualifying with many of the Races taking Place on the Sunday. Each of the Teams was both busy in the outer Paddock and the Pitlane getting their cars ready for a shakedown session in which they would have to Qualify to see who could be the Fastest and take Pole Position for each of the Races come Sunday.

 

Angelo American Formula 5000

 

The Formula 5000's made a Thunderous return to the Brands Hatch circuit, Built during a time where many Formula 1 cars from the likes of Lotus Williams and McLaren we using Ground Effect and pushing up the speeds of their cars.

 

Formula 5000's took speeds to a whole new level by using V8 Engines to power their cars which were found to be even faster than those Formula 1 cars of that era on the straights of different race tracks. Chevron B37's and McRae GM1'S were amongst the field and Qualifying looked to be very close indeed.

 

In First Place taking Pole Position and The Fastest Lap was (Neil Glover) in his Chevron B37 with a Lap Time of 47.039 with an average speed of 92.44mph. An Insanely Fast Lap Time for Brands Hatches Indy Circuit.

 

In Second Place was (Mark Campfield) in his Chevron B24 with A Lap Time Of 47.694 and an Average Speed of 91.17mph still Impressively quick for Chevron Power.

 

In Third Place was (Greg Thornton) in his Chevron B24 with A Lap Time Of 47.775 with an Average Speed of 91.02mph showing the power of the Chevron Engine through every turn.

 

A Tightly Packed Grid for Sundays Race and it looks like its a Chevron Front Row lockout but who's car will have the power to Triumph over the others? only time will tell.

 

Bernie's Sports And V8's

 

Bernie's V8's were up next and showcased a lot of Impressive V8 Powered Machinery on the grid. Talbot Sunbeams, Austin Healey's and even MGB GT V8 powered Machinery hitting the Track during Qualifying. Lets see what V8 Power can do and which Drivers managed to tame the Beasts and make it into the top three.

 

In First Place Taking Pole Position and the Fastest Lap was the Duo of (Elis Mar/Elis Mat) in their Talbot Sunbeam Lotus with a Lap Time of 54.533 and an Average speed of 79.74mph. Fast and Furious Driving on display once again.

 

In Second Place was (James Plant) in his Austin Healey 106 with a Lap Time of 54.964 and an Average Speed of 79.11mph. Very Quick and Consistent Laps seen from James behind the wheel too.

 

In Third Place was the Duo of (Can/Wilson) in their Aston Martin V8 Vantage with a lap time of 55.397 and an Average speed of 78.49mph. Showing just how much power and Grunt that Aston has.

 

Another Fantastic set of V8 Powered Machines on Display showing the true power of the American Built V8'S and how they changed the game in terms of Racing and Road Going Cars. Who will win the Race on Sunday. Will have to wait and see.

 

Legends Cars Championship

 

Referred to as the Little Pocket Rockets these small Looking Cars may not loo like they have anything Special to offer but just wait until you see what these little Wolves in Sheep's clothing can do once out on the Track.

 

Using Motorbike Engines of 1200cc they Really do show on Track just how lightweight and fast they are and Slip Streaming is commonly a way of being able to Achieve a Faster Lap time by using the Driver in fronts Slip Stream to aid in the Aerodynamics of the Car and Reduce Drag. Lets see what Happened during Qualifying Heat 2

 

In First Place Taking Pole and Setting The Fastest Lap was (Chris Dewey) in his Legend with a Lap Time Of 56.700 with an Average Speed of 76.69mph. Crazy Fast for Something so small and yet very Agile in Control.

 

In Second Place was (Stephen Whitelegg) in his Legend 34 Ford Coupe with a Lap Time of 56.740 and an Average Speed of 76.64mph. First And Second look to be very close together Thanks to the aids in Slip Streaming down the Brabham Straight to gain positions or Fastest Laps.

 

In Third Place was (Miles Rudman) in his Legend 34 Coupe with a Lap Time Of 56.878. Very Close between the Top three and it just goes to show how Important Slip Streaming is to Gain an Advantage in this Qualifying Session.

 

Exciting Stuff Ahead of The

Legends Races on Sunday where One of the Drivers will Win the Race and Take the Victory, Who Will it be? Only Time Will Tell.

 

Nascar Whelen Euro Series-Pro

 

The Main Highlight Event of the Day and the Nascar's with their Thunderous Powered V8 Engines Roared onto the Indy Circuit and with Two Formation Laps Completed to Warm Up the Tyres every car was released to Start Qualifying. Lets See How the Grid Will Shape Up.

 

In First Place to Take Pole and The Fastest Lap was (Alon Day) in his Chevrolet Camaro Caal Racing with a Lap Time of 48.903 and an Average Speed of 88.92mph. I wonder if Marty McFly and Dock Brown were part of their Race Team to Achieve that Impressive Lap Time? Non the Less Amazing Work by Alon Day.

 

In Second Place was (Loris Hezemans) in his Ford Mustang Hedrik's Motorsport) with a Lap Time of 49.000 and an Average Speed of 88.74mph. Another Fast and Consistent Lap From Loris showing the Balance Between Driver and Car.

 

In Third Place was (Nicolo Rocca) in his Chevrolet Camaro DF1 Racing) with A Lap Time of 49.292 and an Average Speed of 88.22mph. All Three Drivers seem to be very close in terms of Lap Times and this will make for some Exciting Racing Come Race Day.

 

Close and Competitive Racing in Nascar-Pro but who will have the Power to Push even Harder and take Home The Victory come Race Day. We will have to wait and See.

Euro Nascar-2 is A a series of Slightly Lower Tuned Nascar's that Features as a Way of Getting Drivers ready to head to the Big Time Nascar Racing that takes Place at Daytona and Indianapolis.

 

Drivers must First Prove themselves worthy by Starting out from the Bottom and Only The Best Drivers in the World can make it into Nascar's Top Level Racing Teams.

 

Lets See how the Grid Lines up and see who managed to Qualify the Fastest and take Pole Position.

 

In First Place and Taking Pole Position and The Fastest Lap was (Advait DeoDHar) in his Ford Mustang Caal Racing with A Lap Time Of 49.918 and An Average Speed of 87.11mph. A Really Well Controlled Lap and a very Focused Mind to Achieve such a Drive.

 

In Second Place was (Tobias Dauenhauer) in his Ford Mustang Hendriks Motorsport with a Lap Time Of 50.110 and an Average Speed Of 86.78mph. Really Well Done and a very Quick Driver and Car underneath Him.

 

In Third Place was (Justin Kunz ) in his Chevrolet Camaro DF1 Racing with A Lap Time Of 50.161. Very Fast and Consistent with the Top Three all Very Close and Ready to take on the Race and see who can Battle and Fight for a Victory.

 

An Exciting Qualifying Session for both Nascar-Pro and Euro Nascar-2 with Each set of Driver Showing the Speed Power and Machinery of the Great American State. Looking Forward To Seeing what Happens During The Race.

 

Pickup Trucks Championship

 

The Pickup Trucks Returned to Brands Hatch for Another High Speed Weekend of Flat Out Racing around the Indy Circuit. With Light Weight Chassis and Powerful Engines it was shaping up to be a very Large and Competitive Grid for Pickup Trucks.

 

In First Place Taking Pole Position and the Fastest Lap was (Reece Jones) in his Pick Up Truck 2000 with a Lap Time of 52.634 with an Average Speed of 82.61mph.

 

In Second Place was (George Turiccki) in his Pickup Truck 2000 with A Lap Time of 52.706mph and an average speed of 82.50mph.

 

In Third Place was (Mark Willis) in his Pickup Truck 2000 with A Lap Time of 52.976 and an Average Speed of 82.08mph.

 

Three Very Quick and Capable Drivers all Fighting for the Victory In Tomorrow's Race but who will be up to the challenge of Taking 1st Place and Winning. Only One Way To Find Out.

Formally Known as the Silhouettes the Super Silhouettes Brought with them some fast and impressive Space Frame Machinery to the track.

 

With Aero Packages and Light Weight Monacock Chassis these Monsters were going to be something Amazing to watch Race.

In First Place Taking Pole and The Fastest Lap was (Ray Harris in his Ginetta G40r with a Lap Time of 50.564 and an Average speed of 86.00mph. Either Crazy or Insane I would Describe that Incredible Lap of Brands. Amazing Work.

 

In Second Place was (Malcom Blackman) in his Vauxhall Tigra with A Lap Time of 50.805 and an Average Speed of 85.59mph Another Crazy Quick and on the Edge Lap.

 

In Third Place was (Lewis Smith) in his Mercedes SLK with a Lap Time of 51.313 and an Average Speed of 84.74mph. Three Very Fast and Capable Drivers in this Qualifying Session.

 

Incredible Speed and Fast Reflex Driving From Each Driver out there. It will be Exciting to see who can bring home a Victory and push their Machinery past its Limits and into New Territory. Another Race I'm Looking Forward to Seeing.

 

A Brilliant End to the Days Qualifying and seeing all that Machinery out there was Fantastic. Congratulations to all of the Qualifiers who made the Top Three in Every Support Race. Looking Ford To Tomorrow and a Very Fierce Set Of Battles Thought the Day.

DAY 2 of the Formula Ford 50th Anniversary Race Weekend and after a Really Fast Action Packed array of Cars in both Mazda and Formula Ford Racing and Qualifying on Saturday it was time for Sunday and to find out who would be Crowned the Formula Ford Champion of 2021.

 

AMOC GT / GT4 & Intermarque (Qualifying)

 

First up on the Sunday for Qualifying was The AMOC GT/GT4 Championship and with a Grid of Just 5 Cars for this One its going to be Very Interesting to see out of the 5 Drivers who Can set the Quickest Pace During Qualifying. Lets Find Out who took Pole and the Fastest Lap.

 

In First Place taking Pole Position and the Fastest Lap was the Duo Pair of Rikki Cann and Samuel Wilson) in their Aston Martin V8 Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 1:00.791 and a Top Speed of 71.53mph. Fantastic Work both Ricky and Rob Really Pushing the Aston Martin Hard and Gunning fort that All Important Victory come the First Race.

 

In Second Place was (Jamie Sturges) in his VW Golf TCR with a Best Lap Time of 1:03.245 and a Top Speed of 68.75mph. Amazing Work there Jamie Pushing that Golf and Racing it Like a Pro.

 

In Third Place was the Duo of (Whit and Fenn) in their Lotus Elise Motorsport with a Best Lap Time of 1:04.089 and a Top Speed of 67.85mph. Great Work there Whit and Fenn Fantastic Driving and Great Team Work.

 

Three Very Quick and Capable Cars in the Hands of Some Very Competitive Drivers will make for a Really Fantastic Race. With all three Cars Having Different Power Outputs it will be Interesting to see what Techniques Each of them will use to their Advantage Come the First Race.

After a Very Quick and Heated Qualifying Session which saw the Duo of Rikki Cann and Samuel Wilson Take Pole Position will Jamie and the Duo of Whit and Fenn be able to Beat them off the Line and Who Will Take Home their First Victory of the Weekend?

 

In First Place Taking the Victory was (Rikki Cann) in his Aston Martin V8 Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 58.194 and an Average Speed of 73.41mph. Amazing Job there Ricky Really Working Hard Behind the Wheel to Keep that Aston in the Lead Thought the Entire Race with some Beautifully Controlled Driving as well.

 

In Second Place was (Andy Thompson) in his Seat Toledo with a Best Lap Time of 57.893 and an Average Speed of 73.35mph. Incredible Drive there Andy Really Well Done and Making sure to hold onto that All Important Second Place.

 

In Third Place was (Paul Whight) in his Lotus Elise Motorsport with a Best Lap Time of 57.284 and an Average Speed of 72.75mph. Superb Drive from Paul Really Looked like he was Enjoying that Drive and Kept Pushing Hard the Whole Way around the Race Track. His Smooth Driving Through Clearways was Amazing to see.

 

What an Amazing First Race for the AMOC GT Championship with Many Different Cars from Many different Manufacturers Taking Part it always a Joy to see both the Cars and their Drivers Happy Doing what they Love to do. With One Last Race to go will the Likes of Rikki Cann's Teammate Samuel Wilson be able to Hold on and Get One More Victory for the Team? Lets Find Out.

In First Place taking the Final Win of the Day for AMOC GT was (Rob Fenn) in his Lotus Elise Motorsport) with a Best Lap Time of 50.083 and an Average Speed of 83.82mph. Congratulations Rob what a Drive and What a Car Fantastic Work.

 

In Second Place was (Samuel Wilson) in his Aston Martin V8 Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 51.459 and an Average Speed of 80.50mph. Amazing Driving there Samuel Keeping Close to Rob on Many Occasions around the Circuit and a Cracking Overtake on Rob through Clearways.

 

In Third Place was (Julian Reddyhough) in his Aston Martin Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 59.552 and an Average Speed of 71.18mph. Super Driving From Julian Smooth through the Corners and Making sure to Hang onto that Third Place During the Entirety of the Race.

 

A Really Fantastic Two Races for the AMOC GT Championship here this Weekend while the Grid might not have been up to Full Capacity We saw the Likes of Rob Fenn Samuel Wilson Rikki Cann and Julian Reddyhough take some Incredible Victories thought the Two Races. Congratulations to All of you and Good Luck to all other Drivers who were Taking Part. Keep Pushing Hard and Victory Will Come to You.

 

BRSCC Mazda MX5 Championship (Race 1)

 

Next Up was the BRSCC Mazda MX5 Championship and with Saturdays Qualifying showing a Huge Grid of 35 Cars this was Definitely going to be a Fantastic Race to Witness. Lets get right to it and Find Out who Took Victory and by How Much.

 

In First Place taking the Victory was (Brian Trott) in his Mazda MX5 MK1 with a Best Lap Time of 58.179 and an Average Speed of 73.82mph. Super Work there Brain Racing Against another 34 Competitors in Identical Cars and Winning takes Incredible Driver Skill and Talent and you Really Showed that During the Race. Congratulations.

 

In Second Place was (Oliver Allwood) in his Mazda MX5 MK1 with a Best Lap Time of 57.532 and an Average Speed of 73.81mph. Well Done Oliver Fantastic Driving and a Really Great Defence of Second Place thought the entire Race.

 

In Third Place was (Zak Oates) in his Mazda MX5 MK1 with a Best Lap Time of 58.020 and an Average Speed of 73.79mph. Really Nice Work there Zak Amazing Drive and Keeping Very Close to Oliver and Brain at the Front of the Gird thought. Brilliant Driving.

 

What a Race with Three Incredible Drivers in the likes of Brian Oliver and Zak All Pushing their Cars to the Limit and Achieving Superb Results for Race 1. Good Luck to all other Drivers Lets See if Race 2 of the Day Might Turn things Around.

After a Thrilling and Nail Biting Race 1 which saw Brian Trott take the Victory with Oliver Allwood in Second and Zak Oates in Third Place will anyone Else be able to Challenge thease Three Very Fast and Talented Drivers? Lets Find Out.

 

In First Place taking the Overall Victory was (Steve Foden) in his Mazda MX5 MK1 with a Best Lap Time of 1:07.517 and an Average Speed of 63.32mph. Congratulations Steve a Well Deserved Victory and Another Brilliant Trophy to add to the Cabinet at Home. Congratulations.

 

In Second Place was (Oliver Allwood) in his Mazda MX5 MK1 with a Best Lap Time of 1:07.789 and an Average Speed of 63.17mph. Brilliant Work Once Again Oliver taking Second Place and Racing with Everything you could Possibly Get out of that Car. A Future Mazda Champion in the Making no Doubt. Brilliant Drive.

 

In Third Place was (Luke Pullen) in his Mazda MX5 MK1 with a Best Lap Time of 1:07.835 and an Average Speed of 63.14mph. Well Done Luke Really Fantastic Driving in Very Damp and Bright Conditions.

BRSCC Mazda MX5 SuperCup Championship (Race 2)

 

The Mazda MX5 Super Cup Championship was next Up and after A Whole Day of Qualifying and Qualifying Second Fastest on Saturday it was time to see what Each of the Drivers could do and How they would use their Style and Race Craft to Gain a Victory. With Another Large Grid of 30 Cars Anything Can Happen and Racing always has its Moments of Unpredictability.

 

In First Place taking the Victory was (Declan Lee) in his Mazda MX5 MK3 with a Best Lap Time of 1:07.272 and an Average Speed of 45.71mph. What a Drive from Declan in Very Wet and Near Impossible Visibility Conditions He Kept his Foot Down and Head up to Take an Incredible Victory. Congratulations Declan.

 

In Second Place was (Richard Amos) in his Mazda MX5 MK3 with a Best Lap Time of 1:06.697 and an Average Speed of 45.70mph. Brilliant Driving there Richard Keep Pace with Declan Really Well and Navigating in Almost Blind Conditions shows Just How Incredible of a Driver you are.

What an Insane Race with Wet and Rainy Weather Conditions Really Mixing the Grid Up and Showing who the Very Talented Drivers are that can Push their Machinery Beyond its Limits in the Wet and Still take Victory. Some Incredible Drivers in the likes of Declan Richard and John Braving it out there to Deliver some Truly Fantastic Wet Weather Performances. Well Done to all the other Drivers as Well thease Conditions are Always Unpredictable and Yet you All put on a Brave Face and Drive like true Gentlemen Thought.

In First Place Taking the Victory was (Jack Harding) in his Mazda MX5 MK3 with a Best Lap Time of 56.785 and an Average Speed of 61.14mph. Super Work there Jack Taking the Victory and the Fastest Lap. Well Done.

 

In Second Place was (Patrick Fletcher) in his Mazda MX5 MK3 with a Best Lap Time of 56.820 and an Average Speed of 61.05mph. Great Work there Patrick Really Great Effort and a Super Drive for Second Place.

Here we are Now at The Semi Finals after a Very Action Packed Last Chance Race and Now with a Gird of 26 Drivers and Cars This Race as Well as Two More Will Decide the 2021 Formula Ford Champion. Lets See First Who Took Victory in Race 1 for the Semi Finals.

 

In First Place was (Niall Murray) in his Van Diemen BD21 with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.661 and an Average Speed of 56.48mph. Brilliant Work Niall Congratulations on P1 after a Heroic Drive.

 

In Second Place was (Neil McLennan) in his Spectrum KMR with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.640 and an Average Speed of 56.41mph. Superb Work there from Neil to take P2 He Really Enjoys this Track and Loves to Race as Quickly as he Can alongside his Fellow Friends and Competitors.

In First Place was (Joey Foster) in his Firman 2021 with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.302 and an Average Speed of 69.96mph. Fantastic Driving Joey Really Well Done and a Super Victory for you Indeed.

 

In Second Place was (Oliver White) in his Medina Sport JL17 with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.124 and an Average Speed of 69.67mph. Congratulations Oliver P2 and Super Car Control During the Race and a Stunning Formula Ford.

 

In Third Place was (Thomas Mills) in his Spectrum KMR with a Best Lap Time of 1:01.154 and an Average Speed of 69.66mph. Fantastic Work Thomas Well Driven with Amazing Car Control and Tight through the Corners at Clearways.

This is it the Grand Final of the Formula Ford Festival Race Weekend and With Jamie Sharp Being Potentially One Race away From Taking the Title it has come down to the wire and this Last Race will Determined who The New Formula Ford Grand Final Champion of 2021 is.

 

In First Place Taking the Grand Final Championship Crown is (Jamie Sharp) in his Medina Sport JL17 with a Best Lap Time of 50.918 and an Average Speed of 66.77mph. The Streets of the Montserrat Volcanic Eruption

As I approached the edges of what once was drainage through Plymouth but had become a pyroclastic river, the "bad" area was apparent and stunning. The buildings (houses?, shops?, government buildings?, too far gone to tell) became scattered with shards of rubble flagging former neighboring properties, the spaces in between flattened by 1000-degree pyroclastic that I had been warned could still be up to 400-degrees hot only a foot or two below the crust. Still fired from the last flow that came this far down this gulch last month, before the newest dome established its cap and the pressure began building. Structures that have chanced to remain standing are heavily pitted. The grounds were littered with rocks and pumice from bowling ball size to the size of an airport van. And they were all over the landscape. I was careful to step (the Kilauea earth crack experience flashed through my mind), and I came upon an area at the border of the "fair" and "bad" areas, and accessible to a great medium-format Hassleblad view of a lot of the brutal elements of this change. A surviving concrete section of the last building on a disappeared street with truck-sized boulders either thrown there from the volcano or pushed there by pyroclastic flows and piling up at the former building's reception area. In the background, the pyroclastic river swath a quarter mile wide. Total and absolute destruction. Flows that vaporized or covered everything and which had built the valley up to a flat plain that will surely widen the destruction of future flows. Above that, more abandoned houses under surviving palm trees with the classic stratovolcanic cone of dormant Chances Peak that shaped modern Plymouth during past eruptions tens of hundreds of years ago visually reminding the viewer what caused the desolation in the foreground. The new Soufriere Hills dome to the right and slightly back from Chances Peak, unseen or seen as light smudge of steaming ash activity because of the constant haze around it and the clouds forming about the heat. I was in a rarefied spot and I used several minutes choosing the frame on the photograph, as I could go no farther than that without wading out into the flow scar, still being careful with every step while setting up so as not to cave through the crust. I finally had the frame set and ---- ---- ---- there was a "thud" ---- ---- ---- from about a mile or two away from me toward the gray ash smudge at the bulging top of the volcano. That smudge in the Hassleblad frame suddenly became an advancing dark gray and black boiling torrent of eruption debris rushing at my viewfinder from the upper right toward the lower left. It was a dream to have seen it from where I stood and to have been coincidentally prepared to make that image, but now it was time to run for my life...

 

I’d made it nearly to the end of the delta when I sickeningly broke through up to my upper thigh and was caught, and for a few moments I was in a madness of panic to stop from sinking deeper, but all that did was sink me deeper. It was like my impression of the workings of quicksand, like having your leg caught in a vat of dry cement powder, so fine and yet so dense and entrapping. My high-top basketball shoe wouldn't come off, but after twenty seconds I again experienced the relief of alarming warmth leveling off to a non-lethal one. So I dusted a surprising 3 to 5 inches of ash that had accumulated in an astoundingly short time off of my camera bag and I calmed down by making a 35-mm image with my Canon of my desolate position and the unbelievably barren and assaulted landscape that I was engulfed in and which at that moment shared my predicament. Then I calmly spent half a minute hand digging my way through the warm muck and out of my mess and then I immediately continued fleeing to the speedboat that I hoped would still be there. After climbing several eight and ten-foot fences in a bound (such was the height of the drifted and compacted ash at the shore), I made it to the docks ---- and the speedboat was gone.

 

The mountain continued to erupt excessive amounts of ash onto me in a wave that streamed down the slopes at ground level until it hit the shore and then 100 yards out to sea it shot 350 feet almost straight up into the skies on the sudden ocean lift and then drifted higher with the trade winds off to the western horizon. After a minute of serious chin rubbing, listing my limited options at that point and not liking any of them, I heard voices from the water screaming my name from behind the dark flowing black ash curtain. I yelled back through the odd phenomenon that separated me from them and a short unseen cheer went up, the captain and the others thinking perhaps I had not made it. The captain then risked his life and his equipment and made a courageous high-speed bolt under and through the rising eruption curtain between us. Suddenly we were visible to each other and only a short run along the hazy and ash-blown dock away from each other. With most of the equipment I came to town with, especially the film of the eruption I’d just survived and photographed still safely inside the Hassleblad, I made a very meaningful leap off the ash piled dock and into the hold of the boat. The captain gunned it back around and through the rising ash curtain and made for the open sea and relative safety.
