Photographs of Oskar Kokoschka at Work, 1950

Lee Miller

These little-known photographs were taken by the American photographer Lee Miller (1907-1977) in the early summer of 1950. They record Oskar Kokoschka in teh final stages of completing the three canvases of The Myth of Prometheus.

Miller was an acclaimed war photographer, her work often appearing in major magazines, and she was part of avant-garde artistic circles in Britain and France. It is not known whether these photographs of Kokoschka were ever intended for publication. They were taken in the makeshift studio the artist had set up on the first floor of Count Antoine Seilern's London house at Princes Gate, South Kensington. Kokoschka worked on the paintings there for about six months before they were installed downstairs on the ceiling of the reception room.

The artist can be seen mixing his paints and working on a variety of specially constructed easels. One of the photographs shows him painting on a ladder with the canvas in anticipation of its eventual position on the ceiling. There were a number of large mirrors int eh room, which Miller used to take some reflected photographs.

Miller focused on the Hades and Persephone painting in particular, which Kokoschka was in the process of changing significantly. In one photograph, he stands in front of the canvas with a very different Persephone visible to his side. In the next image, he has completely changed this figure and included himself in the painting as Hades.

So I landed on my parcel a while back and wound up ass-deep in the waterfall in the front yard, and the first thought I had was 'hey, that might be a nice artsy photo... if I found a good place to pose my arms'. Long Awkward Pose supplied the needed pose.

And of course, the waterfall then evaporated. As has the hair I was wearing in this photo. Bah.

People on Roosevelt Island on a sunny weekend afternoon. Nothing like a pose in front a smallpox hospital, eh?

What a perfect photo pose... I think Nikki has been practicing this one.

Again using the print 'poser' but exposed with a childish poem I wrote, which was printed onto acetate and layed over the paper while exposing the negative.

N.B. The original photo was taken by Luke Marsden and developed by me.
