My friend Lorna S. launching our photography weekend with a shot of a resting bull bison. Photo taken from the safety of the car, "across the bow" from the driver's seat.
While we did our photography from the shelter of our car, other people parked and walked closer. One of them was a man with a white, red-tipped cane that he tapped on the ground in front of him as he walked. He was accompanied by a young woman. I finally called out to them as they got within 30 or 40 feet of the bison. What would a blind man do if the bison suddenly stood up and headed toward him?

Maybe not the most adorable animal but they are fun to watch and they used to have their own TV show. Not many animals can claim that.

This is "the farewell" taken from the final movement of Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, which was written shortly after the death of his daughter from scarlet fever.
