i think i look quite sad in this one.
we haven't had a sunny morning in a while so i thought i would take my flash out and to try and make my own light. i find working with sunlight is much easier, not to mention a lot more photogenic..
i'm not convinced i like this too much, i wish i was better at these kind of portraits.

thunder storms means no football shoots today. So, I dropped berries in the tank instead. Lit with one SB900, camera left with a Honl grid triggered by PocketWizard Flex TT5s. The tank had a black plexiglass sheet at the back and sat on a mirrored piece of plexi glass below.

This picture is taken around noon on a sunny day so the natural light was pretty harsh and unflattering. I decided to underexpose the background and use an SB-24 on a Nano stand with a translucent umbrella (camera left) to balance the light on the model. I could have used a bit more flash power for this shot to use an even smaller aperture under the max sync speed of my camera (1/250).
Triggered with PW's.

Tamara Terzic, last weekend outside in the park near the water. First sunny and warm day of the season here in The Netherlands!
Only a subtle color effect added, all other effects are straight from the camera because of the 85mm 1.2 lens, the great makeup and styling of Ayse Aslan, the warmer white balance in the shadows and midtones and the contrasty beauty light.
Light: Elinchrom Deep Octa from the front-top, powered by a simple strobist setup with a SpeedLite 600EX-RT, triggered via a PocketWizard FlexTT5.
I used another, bare SpeedLite 580EX II from the left-back, also triggered via a PocketWizard FlexTT5, to give the image a little extra bite in the hair.
I measured the light with the Sekonic L-758DR. On camera the PocketWizard MiniTT1 with AC3 Zone Controller.
Postprocessing: ColorChecker Passport profiling. Simple selective curves in Lab. Warm toning in the shadows.
It was hard shooting today, I went out with a clear vision in my head what I was looking for. After running around town for an hour and shooting I didn't found anything I liked, the flashlight I brought along to help me focus wasn't working properly and the weather was kinf of nasty. Finally I got this shot and I guess I am pretty happy with it

This time I was able to borrow 8 SB-800 units instead of 6. All of the SB-800s were set to 1/64th power and triggered by setting the flash to the SU-4 optical remote mode. I also attached them to the 12ft light stand with super clamps instead of gaffers tape. This made for easier adjustments of the individual flash units but made the light stand significantly heavier.
I addressed the issue of consistent firing by setting my 2 580EX II flash units to the stroboscopic flash mode that nobody ever uses and is commonly forgotten. I set the flash to fire at 1Hz at 1/16th power and triggered them with PocketWizards. The stroboscopic feature only works if the flash is attached to a hot shoe so I used PC sync hot shoe adapters. This kept the flashes at a consistent interval as I walked the light stand behind the car. The 580EX II to camera right was at headlight level and about 10ft in front of the car. The 580EX II to camera left was also 10ft away but was raised to about 5ft and aimed down towards the car.
I had more problems getting the flashes to fire together. I was disappointed since the PocketWizards are considered the gold standard in radio triggering. In order for the flashes to keep firing, the trigger button had to be held down for the entire exposure. My buddy Adam (who's car is being modeled) held up the triggering PocketWizard high over his head Statue of Liberty style to get both of them to fire together.
I stopped the lens aperture down more to exaggerate the star effect on the background lights.
After hours of planning and troubleshooting, I'm happy to see the final result turn out as well as it did.
The final exposure was set to ISO 250, f/14, 30sec.

I hydrated a generous helping of water balls over the past few days and had a play with them this evening. In my quasi-scientific way, I used the same technique as in my Day 93 shot, with a snooted strobe illuminating a colorful magazine image below and then shooting down through a water-filled dish full of water balls harkening back to my Day 54 image. It wasn't what I expected but it'll certainly do.
Next time... we combine both techniques... muhahahaaaaa. =D

Last week in NYC, I met up with several flickr friends. On Wednesday we met up with good friend
Sam Li during his lunch break. He said he knew of this alley we could shoot at. He was cool enough to get in front of the camera for me. When pulling out my stuff, I realized I forgot my shoot-thru umbrella. Well, you just have to roll with it and I went with bare flash. Human Light stand was another flickr friend, Frank. Later that evening I had dinner with my buddy David (aka Pexy). The next day I got to hang with Seth (aka drshrinker). All great fun. I love New York and meeting up with friends was great. This week I will be out in LA with my wife doing an early 10 year anniversary (cheaper than the summer). Hopefully meet up with a few flickr friends there too.

This is pretty much an accident!
The original idea was to take a picture of me holding three cats at once... didn't work out that well as you can see ;)
However I started playing around, I grabbed a PocketWizard and one of my SB-800s.
The final setup for this shot is the SB-800 pointing directly into the wall behind the cats at 1/64th.
The camera was set to 1/40th and f/2.8.
The WB is tungsten, but I didn't use a gel so that's where the blue touch comes from.
