A macro view of a Chinese coin with incense smoke passing through the squared center, taken for the Macro Mondays group theme, "Smoke." The frame represents a span of one-inch across.

This is an image of one of three coins that came with a copy of the I Ching, which translates to "Book of Changes." The I Ching is an approximately 5000-year-old Chinese divination manual and is one of the oldest works in existence.

Strobist/technical info:

The coin was secured by a gooseneck clamp and angled slightly toward the camera. It was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights and the red LED of a Coast TX10 Quad Color flashlight.

The speedlights were positioned at nine- and one-o'clock, each one-foot above and two-feet away from the coin. The 9-o'clock speedlight was fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄2 power through a Neewer 24" x 24" soft box (to illuminate the front of the coin). The one-o'clock speedlight was fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄16 power through a gridded snoot (to illuminate the smoke behind the coin).

The TX10 was shown for a 2s exposure from underneath to create the red highlight.

The SB900s were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus Xs.

Lens: Tokina AT - X M100 AF PRO D (AF 100mm f / 2.8 Macro) with a 12mm extension tube attached.

Specifically, this is a "Flexible Massage & Slicker Brush" for your cat--whatever that is. The bristles span 1.5-inches.

Strobist and technical info:

The bristles were placed face-down on a piece of black reflective acrylic. The brush was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 and one SB700 speedlights. The SB900's were positioned 90-degrees CL and CR, 2-feet away and 1-foot above subject, aiming down at 45-degree angles. They were each fired through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes. The CL strobe was placed in Manual mode and fired @ 1⁄4 power; the CR strobe was also in Manual mode and fired @ 1⁄8 power. The SB700 had a Gary Fong 5th Gen Lightsphere attached and was positioned 20-degrees CR and slightly above camera level. It was fired in Manual Mode @ 1⁄4 power. The red LED of a Coast TX10 Quad Color flashlight, handheld between the camera and SB700, was shone on the subject's reflection for a 0.6-sec. exposure.

The SB900's were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X's; the SB700 was placed in SU-4 mode and was triggered by the other flashes.

Lens: Tokina AT-X Pro Macro 100 1: 2.8 D.

BETTER LARGE

Shot this about a year and a half ago and came across it on my hard drive today. This was not long after my good friend Jensen had his first baby boy named Roodie. Now days it seems like everyone around me is popping out kids left and right. Oh yeah, don't you dig Roodie's chest piece? No baby ever rocked a temporary tattoo so tough..

Big thanks to Teresa for loaning us the petticoat, again.

On the way up the hill I spotted this pelvis, (well, 1/2 a pelvis after I unintentionally broke it), and obviously thought it complemented the model well. A well prepared model will have in her possession a good pelvis.

Day 238 - yes, sir!

I am not a smoker and normal cigarettes are just nasty, but I really like the smell of pipes for some reason (even though I don't like the taste).

I haven't done a shot against black for quite a while now, so I thought it was about time to do another one.

Day 48 - possessed...

... I got the shot that I was looking for (and even a bit more). Yeah!

I wanted to take this picture for a week now and knew pretty much what I wanted the shot to look like. I wanted a field, sunset in the background and me standing with outstretched arms in the middle. So I went location scouting and found this place I really liked. Went back there the next day, the light was good, the clouds were great, I packed just the stuff I needed (remember, I had the shot in my head), drove there, started setting up and doing some test shots... realized I didn't bring a CF-Card. Went out the next day again, waited over an hour for the right light and when the sun was down enough to get the shot, the clouds were gone. I guess third time is the charm... you see the result above. The jumping part wasn't planned, but while shooting, I thought I try it and had a winner right on the first take the camera triggered while I was in the air. The other exposures coming afterwards were ok, but not as good as this one.

The setup for this shoot was pretty simple, I wanted to illuminate most of the field in front of me, but keep everything else pretty much in the dark. To get the right exposure capturing the sunset and still got enough light on me shooting into an umbrella, I had to use two speedlights at once at full power to get enough light out of them. I triggered the camera via Pocketwizards Plus IIs with the timer set to 10 seconds. So I could start the countdown, get ready and lift of during the exposure. Unfortunatly that meant, that the flash was always going of twice - when I started the countdown and when the camera triggered. Anybody an idea how to set up the PWs to trigger only once?

... und für die Happy Shooting Leute noch einmal ein kleiner Anhang: Mein Beitrag zur Geist Aufgabe. Besessen von einem Geist und auf dem Weg zurück...

Kate specifically instructed me to get a couple of bags of Christmas candy at Sam's. Then, of course, I had to take a festive picture. And, obviously, I couldn't put them back in the bag, after, you know, they'd been handled. So we ate them. It didn't take very long. Sigh. I swear we tried to pace ourselves.

This was from a couple of weeks back. Tiffany came down to hang and volunteered to model. I spent most the time shooting natural light but towards the end of the evening we found ourselves on a rooftop. You know I just had to bust out the flash sooner or later. I'll post some of the natural light ones a little later. She rocked them all!

Kate is a paper-crafter and a friend lent her these for a project. When I saw the bag-o-scissors, I realized I. Must. Photograph.

Why so many? Each scissor has a different cut pattern. Evidently important for paper crafters.

Although this image isn't that Christmasy, I wanted to post something for Christmas and I didn't want to use another seamless picture.. But Merry Christmas to everyone! I'm posted this early because I know most of you will be offline in the next few days.
