Stone Sublimely Self-Rightous Black IPA Strobist: One Elinchrom 500 BRX in large soft box. Triggered with Pocketwizard MiniTT! and PlusX
We decided to do a last minute photoshoot late Friday evening because the sky had been killer all afternoon! Too bad the clouds moved away faster than we anticipated as the sky was much cooler just minutes before this shot.
Trying to get a panning shot while also timing his position for the flash was the hardest part. Not to mention it was getting pretty dark by this time.
Anywho...

Again, my partner in crime: his are better
We experimented with strobes and water yesterday for the first time. The setup involved a 10-gallon fish tank with two SB-600s on either side (set to 1/64th power) triggered by Pocket Wizards. It was so much fun that we're planning on making this a permanent fixture in our home, so expect more of these in the future!
strobist info: 6 strobes; 2 vivitar 285HV upper right and left, 2 bowens at both sides, one bowens at the wall, one more with a large softbox on camera upper rigth. triggered with Pocket Wizzard.

Day 130 - Essential Lord Beckett... Essential!
You can't wear a hat without pompoms!
Ok, new week... as much as I didn't want to take the 50mm of my camera, I wanted to do a little wider shot today and do some strobist stuff again. Don't mind the Lord Beckett in the title, that name just popped into my mind thinking about how to name this image (too much Pirates of the Caribbean I guess)... I think it kind of fits.

I had a few minutes before the car came and picked up us to head out to a friend's wedding, so I set up a few umbrellas and convinced the subject to let me take a few shots.
This is a quick fly challenge - I only had 5 minutes to shoot and here are the results.
no layers - no masks - just some levels and contrast and I cloned out the background.

This is another Corporate Portrait I took a a couple weeks ago. The I'm on Twitter: last one was a bit more formal where as this one is a little more casual. The space had a really cool hallway so I dided to use that as a background. The rest was all about balancing the flash with the ambient light.

#306/365 A friend of mine, who recently finished writing a book, asked me to take some promo shots. We all headed down to the Mission Inn in Riverside. For this shot we found this cool couch on one of the upper floors. I also had a great time meeting and shooting Alissa Dean. This was kind of the first time doing a shoot outside of personal stuff so it was a nice change of location.

Fellow PlainJoe photographer Aaron Kim was down at our new studio space shooting Kyrsten Gammon. I popped in on them and asked if I could pull her outside for some quick shots. I'm trying to make more use of the ABR800 ring flash, so I decide to use it with a shoot thru umbrella rather than a straight ring light.
I hope to make use of the studio soon.

Every year I do a family photo for our Christmas cards. I intended to do something much more elaborate and interesting this year, and failed miserably. So, I was stuck with this rather conventional shot...
Note that the EXIF is misleading. This was shot with a pair of off camera flashes, second curtain, into umbrellas in a clamshell configuration and triggered with Pocketwizards.
I cannot believe this of all my recent photos has made Explore. Ridiculous. LOL.

Hadn't shot for a while because it's been so ugly out for so long, but the sun finally showed itself the other day so we head out to a marsh that Mike had scoped on earlier. We only ended up shooting for about 20 minutes because it was freakin freezing and I ended up soaking my converse in mud and swamp water. It was really nice to see some sunshine though. I damn near thought it went extinct for a while.

A little late this year doing these. Was all done at the last minute. I went out back and cut down some tree branches, then went and bought some fake snow. This shot was taken with one light. Shot at f1.8 to get a shallow depth of field so some of the snow would look out of focus. It was a challenge because when you throw a handfull of snow you really only have a split second to capture the moment when the snow is all in frame. We went more for an action/"in the moment" type shot instead of posed. There were better shots of my son, but the snow just didn't match up as we wanted. He does look like he is having fun though. Happy Holidays everyone!
Thanks to Bryce who worked on the type with me.

Been quite some time since my last upload, busy with work - Weddings, Engagement Shoots and other work too... busy, but in a good way!
This is from an engagement shoot I did with Alexis & Paul around Jesmond Dene (Newcastle) last weekend.
A simple shot really; Nikon SB-910 SpeedLight on a lightweight stand a few feet behind them, triggered with Pocket Wizards, then ambient (plus a little reflected light) to light them from the front.
This little bridge has a very 'Three Billy Goats Gruff' feel to it!
Shot with a Nikon D800e & Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRii.
