strobist information - one 50cm softbox mounted directly on top of my son - Vivatar 285 set at 1/8th power and triggered by pockect wizard. I think exposure was F9 1/250sec.

I love how this turned out; dark and moody with highlights. This shoot was so successful - downtown Asheville is pretty cool and full of inspiration.

#350/365 I find it's just easier to embrace the expressions and let him do what he want. He was eating lunch..I went in and picked him up and dropped in off in the wagon...took a couple shots..then carried him back. As you can see, winter in southern california means yellow grass :)

This is a shot that people always ask me about. They see me at a restarant or out and about and they say, "Hey Kevin, nice shot of the sisters!"

Lighting: Two strobes to the left that were diffused by a big light panel. I triggered them with the Pocketwizard system.

This is Mal. He is a minature pincher & italian greyhound. The idea was to get a shot of him running. I waited till the sun was going down so the flash could freeze the action. Unfortuately Mal was in no mood to run in the evening & being such a small skinny dog he was getting a bit chilly. Lens used was the 85mm F1.8 @ f2.5

And yet another image from last weekend's PDX Strobist event...

For this particular image, I had the very lovely Ashley (who -- by the way -- has an amazing wardrobe collection) wander down an old abandoned road while holding a large photo umbrella overhead. Obviously, there was a small strobe mounted inside the umbrella, and that strobe provided most of the illumination on Ashley.

I've been wanting to do a "strobe inside an umbrella" shot for ages, but have never had the opportunity to do so with any of my clients. This past weekend's Strobist event gave me the chance to try out a brand new lighting technique, and I'm already thinking of ways in which I can incorporate a set-up like this during a corporate shoot.

Camera info: A beat-up ol' Nikon D200, with the amazing (and amazingly cheap) Nikon 55-200mm VR lens mounted onto it. The ASA was set at 100, and the lens was set at 122mm and f6.3. Oh yeah, 1/250th of a second on the the shutter speed.

Strobist info: A 36" black and silver photo umbrella, with a Vivitar 285 and Pocketwizard strapped to the inner ribs. The strobe was set at 1/16th power. A bit of daylight (literally, the last rays of the day) gave a slight side hit of light onto Ashley's face.

Other info: I ended up having to brighten Ashley's legs a bit in Photoshop, otherwise, she sorta' looked as though her upper body was just floating in space. Also, a bit of high pass filtering was used to increase the overall contrast of the shot. Lastly, I darkened the corners of the image just slightly, all to help bring the viewer's eyes more towards the middle of the shot.

Were I to do this shot again, I'd probably have two extra strobes set just slightly behind Ashley (to her left and her right), and I'd use those strobes to kick a bit of rim light along Ashley's lower torso.

Took this for a challenge at ljosmyndakeppni.is against Magnús A. I lost :) Not shamefully though, his picture was great. For the record I've technically won Bobby Fischer in chess, so that kinda weighs it up.

This is Mummi, my good friend, who very kindly took my instructions, modeled for me, drove me all around the place and most importantly was incredibly patient during this whole process! Pretty funny that around eight years ago I took this picture of him close by. Ahhh, memories.

Taken at Reykjavík City Airport. We were waiting for a Fokker to show up, but ran out of time... Maybe next time :)

While most people during the holiday season are thinking about the color red I'm thinking about the color blue. Blue is my favorite color, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is my favorite jazz album, and Chelsea F.C is my favorite London soccer club. The color blue is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, and truth. Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is strongly associated with tranquility and calmness. In heraldry, blue is used to symbolize piety and sincerity.

So it begins...

This is not my first 365. I completed one in 2010 and made a lot of great Flickr friends doing it. It was a tough road though and out of 400+ participants, I think there were fewer than 30 at the end. It tested my mettle, my creativity and my marriage. In the end, I had an amazing photo journal of my year and the journey made me a better, more thoughtful, photographer but it was not easy. Lots of outings in sub-zero temperatures, long nights editing and a constant worry about what my shot would be for the day. I wasn't happy with randoms snaps, I wanted art and variety each and every time. When it was done, I said I'd never do it again... and yet here I am.

So begins my next book of the year and my next adventure. I see a few familiar names in the group and wish everyone the best of luck in this 2016 endeavor.

Let the games begin. :)

He has no face and he has no name

And his whereabouts is sort of unknown

#341/365 The grandparents was watching the kids while we were to go christmas shopping for them I noticed the clouds and took a detour up into the hills for a shot of the day. The light was to the left..I'm not a 100% in love with where it was placed but I moved the camera when I noticed the light breaking thru clouds causing her to move with me.

An Oura Ring health and fitness tracker and its reflection; it is meant to be worn on a finger like a piece of jewelry and tracks your sleep, respiration, heartbeat, etc. The ring is made of titanium and is one-inch in diameter.

Strobist/technical info:

*Note: The following information is provided as a prerequisite for inclusion into the Strobist.com group, and for those who may find the information useful.

The ring was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights. White foam board bounce cards were placed 10-inches to the left, right, and 18-inches directly behind the subject. The first speedlight was placed 100° CL, 10-inches above and 12-inches away from the subject and aimed at the rear bounce card; it was fired bare, with the wide panel deployed, in Manual mode @ 1⁄8 power. The second speedlight was placed 10° CR, at camera level, 10-inches away from the subject and aimed at the right bounce card; it was also fired bare with the wide panel deployed, in Manual mode @ 1⁄8 power.
