Het kunstwerk zelf. Hoe is dat tot stand gekomen?
„Ik heb me laten inspireren door mijn eigen werkwijze, de alledaagse hectiek en de Romeinen. Ik heb nieuw en oud met elkaar gecombineerd. Ik ben naar het Thermenmuseum in Heerlen gegaan en heb daar in eerste instantie de allerkleinste objecten in de vitrines goed bestudeerd. Welke vorm hebben ze? Gebruiken wij ze nog in onze tijd? Welke kleuren hebben ze? Aan de hand daarvan ben ik een kleurenpalet gaan samenstellen. Ik kwam erachter dat fel rood alvast wegviel. Rood is de kleur van het gevaar en mag zeker niet onder de brug of boven in het verkeer terechtkomen. Van de drie primaire kleuren bleven geel en blauw over. Daarmee ben ik gaan mengen. In de vitrines zag ik veel turkoois en lila glas. Ook de terracotta kleuren en aardse kleuren komen terug bij de Romeinen. Uiteindelijk ontstonden zo twaalf kleuren voor de pilaren. De tekeningen zijn geabstraheerde, schetsmatige lijntekeningen die ik afgeleid heb uit vormen uit bijvoorbeeld het reliëf aan de binnenkant van de sarcofaag van Simpelveld. Ook een gezichtsurn, een kapot haarspeldje en een Romeinse gesp van kledingstuk heb ik gebruikt en gecombineerd met symbolen uit onze tijd, denk aan Whatsapp icoontjes of het wifi logo.”

The stars of the show at the Bison Range are, of course, the bison. I did see small herds of cows and calves in the distance, plus a number of lone bulls around the reserve, peacefully enjoying the lush grasses on which they depend to fatten up for the winter lean season. The total number of bison on the range is about 300-500, depending on how many calves are born each year.
In 1908, the federal government carved 18,766 acres out of the Flathead Indian reservation for a very small bison conservation herd. Following the ensuing decades of negotiation, contracts signed and broken, purchases and sales, agreements and betrayals, and numerous legal and legislative actions, in late 2020, management of the range became a fruitful partnership between the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Confederated Kootenai and Salish Tribes (CKST) on whose land the range resides.
The range is meticulously managed to assure quality habitat for the 300-500 head of bison, plus elk, deer, pronghorns, bighorns, bears, many other small mammals, and birds, wildflowers and other native vegetation, and to maintain healthy waterways, including Mission Creek. Two loop roads and a lovely visitor center are open for public visitation for a modest fee.

The first time I set foot on Wellingborough was in the early 80s while working in North London. On a day trip to Chesterfield, I stopped off between trains and captured this Rat with a single GUV. Today I visited the same spot for the first time since and captured a 222. Apart from the change in the interest level of the passing hardware, little else has changed. A new footbridge and lift towers, a few missing chimney pots and a lick of paint … and of course … the knitting!

An abandoned cotton spinning mill somewhere in Wales. Abandoned for some time, not sure on the history behind it. Visited with Wiffsmiff23. Ended up doing some obscure macro work as part of the visit too.
