Alpinia zerumbet, commonly known as shell ginger, is a perennial species of ginger native to East Asia. They can grow up to 8 to 10 ft (2.4 to 3.0 m) tall and bear colorful funnel-shaped flowers. They are grown as ornamentals and their leaves are used in cuisine and traditional medicine. They are also sometimes known as the pink porcelain lily, variegated ginger or butterfly ginger.

I am concerned about the threat that hunting Greater Sandhill Cranes poses to this previously endangered species. They have made a comeback from the 1930s when their numbers dropped to 25 breeding pairs due to unrestricted hunting and habitat loss. In addition, there is a real threat of potential extinction to the 86 endangered Whooping Cranes that migrate alongside of the Sandhills. Twelve states west of the Mississippi River currently allow the hunting of the Lesser Sandhill Cranes sub-species, and Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Ontario, Canada, have proposed hunting the Greater Sandhills in their jurisdictions.

The main reason for the hunts is to reduce crane populations, because they damage burgeoning crops. However, initial data suggests that crane populations undergo natural attrition, without the need for hunting; the International Crane Foundation's (ICF) research suggests that a regular hunting season does not deter cranes from eating crops; and effective and humane solutions developed by the ICF to diminish damage from cranes to seedling corn and other crops can be employed instead.

Please write the governors of these states and let them know how you feel about these hunts and their impact on these majestic birds.

For some reason, even before I pressed the shutter button... I thought the music from 'Jaws' was appropriate :P

Luckily for the Hoverfly, the spiders might have been a bit too small to be a real threat.

Mont Saint Michel is a wonderful sim, well worth a visit. This picture does not really show you what the place looks like, but it is a beautiful little island city recreated in great detail.

Also, this is my first shot with a Redgrave skin. I've had some odd prejudice against them before, but now that I have one I really like it.

Back Story.

Ride out to The Dog Palace and back went well.

Mama and Mr Brown were both laying in the driveway

in front of the old rusty gate.

Had to be careful as not to run into Mr B who's standing sideways with his tail wagging wildly .. ;-)

Mama is racing around in circles while crashing into Mr Brown.

With Mr Brown leaning heavily on my leg and Mama doing crazy 8's between both legs we proceeded through the gate, up the first set of stairs and into their dinning room, breakfast was served.

Half an hour later I have The Leroy Crews feed bag tucked up under my left arm and the 3 of us are traveling through The DMZ.

Today The Leroy Crew could be seen way over by the big drum where they are always fed.

Same Same but Different you ask ?

Who knows, but in my opinion I feel Mr B got the word out to them saying "if I get close enough to any one of you it will be the worst day ever 4 you ! " Just a guess on my part.

First thing I noticed was Leroy's wound on his left side was not looking so good, made a mental note of that while feeding them.

Once they finished we circled around to find Honey and the head monk.

Through the grape vine word has come back to me saying now Tuff Guy, Honey and Leroy play with each other like a bunch of playful puppies. Head Monk said "Mr Photo Man has taught them to do this" , sounds cool 2 me ...;-)

FYI: Girl Friend is still a bitch and won't play with anyone but me. Anyone else including any dog gets close she shows her teeth and growls at them.

Headed back over to The DMZ where Mama was waiting right on the edge of the road and Mr Brown was maybe 20 meters further back inside the bush.

The 3 of us slowly walked over to visit their new friend you see here in the photo.

I did the customary polite wai while approaching, Mama is cautious and stays between my legs. Mr Brown is trying to keep up.

Mr Monk was more animated with Mr Brown this morning.

Mr B was more friendly as well, Mama stayed off to my right keeping a close eye on me as well as Mr Monk.

Mama isn't shy so much as very cautious of any new person, place or thing.

In time the three of them will most likely get along just fine.

Mr Monk's eyes told me he is very aware of the relationship between all the temple dogs and The Photo Man .

I can also tell he is cautious of any and all street dogs due to their reputation of aggressive behavior in the streets.

In other words, watch your back around wild street dogs or you'll end up in the hospital getting patched up, plus a series of rabies shots for good measure.

Before I forget...............

Went back over to The Dog Palace where I have a secret stash of very powerful medicine given to me by the Vet.

Dug it out and mixed up a batch for Mr Leroy.

Left The Browns at The Dog Palace and went looking for Leroy. Found him laying beside Honey, perfect, got busy applying said medicine to a wound that has become infected.

He made little whimpering sounds but he also knew what ever I was doing was in his best interest so he laid very still while being taken care of. We've been through this routine many times in the past and probably will continue into the future too.

.

So there ya go todays adventure .............

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read and reply.

So I've never tried black and white clouds. I can't say I particularly like or dislike it, but this Flickr account is all about experimentation; an abstract take on clouds, perhaps?

After attending the wedding itself in 'drab' (trousers, shirt, tie and shoes - boy clothes are drab!), I loved going to the evening reception in a pretty dress!

With my lovely friends Steve and Sally.

I need help, I had my dolls put away for a while and I decided to take some nice photos of them! THIS IS NOT NICE!! They have black spots all over their faces and it doesn't even go away with acetone!! Please help this is fucking annoying! Since I use the asian with yello cardigan as a main doll for my dollstagram it's super frustrating!! And the new fashionistas Lea is ruined.. Seriously I will kiss the living shit out of you if there's a way to remove it!

At Pinnawela an attempt was made to simulate, in a limited way, the conditions in the wild. Animals are allowed to roam freely during the day and a herd structure allowed to form.

08.00 The babies are fed on milk in the mornings and allowed to range freely on the 12 acres large grassland.

10.00 Each morning and afternoon 14.00 the animals are walked 400 meters to the river Maha Oya for a two-hour bath.

Beteween 16.30 and 1800 in the evening the animals are taken to their stalls and tethered for the night.

They are then given their evening feed which is milk again for the babies and leaves for the older ones. Plenty of food and water is available.

The leaves are mainy Cocunut leaves (Cocos nucifera), but also branches from Jackfruit

(Artocarpus integra), leaves, branches and logs of Kitul palm tree (Caryoty urens),

from There is no stress or threat to the animals.

The elephants are stall fed. There is very little food material that they can gather from the premises of the orphanage except grass. Large quantities of food are brought in daily. Jackfruit, coconut, kitul, tamarind and grass form the bulk of the food given to the elephants at Pinnawela.

Each animal gets approximately 75 kg of green matter a day and in addition each gets 2kg of a food mixture containing maize, rice bran, powdered gingelly seed and minerals. They have access to water twice a day from the river Maha Oya that runs by the Orphanage.

There is one female named Sama which was brought in from the northern part of the country, where there is an ethnic conflict, with the lower part off ts front foot blown off by a land mine. This animal is growing up and is coping with that leg about six inches shorter than the other.
