Chichen Itza (pronounced /tʃiːˈtʃɛn iːˈtsɑː/; from Yucatec Maya: Chi'ch'èen Ìitsha', "At the mouth of the well of the Itza") is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site built by the Maya civilization located in the northern center of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the Yucatán state, present-day Mexico.
Chichen Itza was a major regional focal point in the northern Maya lowlands from the Late Classic through the Terminal Classic and into the early portion of the Early Postclassic period. The site exhibits a multitude of architectural styles, from what is called “Mexicanized” and reminiscent of styles seen in central Mexico to the Puuc style found among the Puuc Maya of the northern lowlands. The presence of central Mexican styles was once thought to have been representative of direct migration or even conquest from central Mexico, but most contemporary interpretations view the presence of these non-Maya styles more as the result of cultural diffusion.
The ruins of Chichen Itza are federal property, and the site’s stewardship is maintained by Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (National Institute of Anthropology and History, INAH). The land under the monuments, however, is privately-owned by the Barbachano family.
The Maya name "Chich'en Itza" means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza." This derives from chi', meaning "mouth" or "edge", and ch'e'en, meaning "well." Itzá is the name of an ethnic-lineage group that gained political and economic dominance of the northern peninsula. The name is believed to derive from the Maya itz, meaning "magic," and (h)á, meaning "water." Itzá in Spanish is often translated as "Brujas del Agua (Witches of Water)" but a more precise translation would be Magicians of Water.
The name is often represented as Chichén Itzá in Spanish and when translated into other languages from Spanish to show that both parts of the name are stressed on their final syllables. Other references prefer to employ a more rigorous orthography in which the word is written according to Maya language, using Chich'en Itzá (pronounced [tʃitʃʼen itsáʔ]. This form preserves the phonemic distinction between ch' and ch, since the base word ch'e'en (which, however, does have a neutral tone vowel "e" in Maya and is not accented or stressed in Maya) begins with a glottalized affricate. The word "Itzá'" has a high rise final "a" that is followed by a glottal stop (indicated by the apostrophe).
There is evidence in the Chilam Balam books that there was another, earlier name for this city prior to the arrival of the Itza hegemony in northern Yucatán. This name is difficult to define because of the absence of a single standard of orthography, but it is represented variously as Uuc Yabnal, Uuc Hab Nal, or Uc Abnal. While most sources agree the first word means seven, there is considerable debate as to the correct translation of the rest. Among the translations suggested are “Seven Bushes,” “Seven Great Houses,” or “Seven Lines of Abnal.”

"Shorts Creek begins its journey west of Terrace Mountain. It winds through the hills, bubbles under Westside Road and flows calmly under the bridge at the park entrance. Between these two roads, it makes a wildly exuberant dash down to the delta, leaping out into space at three separate points. The first cataract is fairly sedate, the second is more enthusiastic and the third, closest to the delta, is spectacular.
BC Parks has made it easy for waterfall-watchers. A sturdy staircase leads up to the largest cascade, then the steps parallel the gorge up to the middle falls. You can safely enjoy watching tumbling water in one direction and beautiful Okanagan Lake in another. (There are lots of landings along the 400-step climb, so you can catch your breath as you appreciate the scenery.)
These falls were Dun-Water’s greatest ally when he was moulding the isolated, undeveloped delta into an estate. He captured the creek’s power in a system of wood stave, wire wrapped pipes so ingenious that European engineers, said was “absolutely impossible” even when they were looking at it. The harnessed water allowed the Laird to have spray irrigation for orchards and gardens plus running water in houses and barns while neighbors relied on pails and pumps. He also used this “hydro” power to grind grain and run a respectably sized sawmill. By tying a Pelton wheel into the system he generated electricity. He even had his own telephone network linking the main buildings."

Me and Arild www.flickr.com/photos/uberfischer/ took a Sunday trip yesterday. Finally, we got the time to go out shooting again!
Needless to say to all of you who know Arild, the journey was perilous. On our way up to a waterfall we could see it from afar that it was A LOT of water coming down that mountain. There has been a lot of avalanches and ice/water-mix in our area lately so I was fairly sceptical going up there. But when we got up there all was forgotten. We took some shots a bit further down river but soon enough got up to the waterfall itself. Up there it was difficult getting any good compos due to lots of trees in the way. We both saw a great spot, just below the waterfall but a fair distance from the rushing water. But as we got ready to go down there we heard a loud cracking noise, then a deep "thump" and after that LOTS of ice chunks came flying down on that very spot. Some of them probably the size of my head. We quickly decided NOT to go to that spot shooting.
So, we went further up, right next to the waterfall. But it was impossible to get anything good there due to both light and background. So we decided to go even further up. On our way back from this little plateou I saw the rockwall that you can see in this shot. I just shouted to Arild to wait for a second, set up the tripod and took 3-4 exposures and got this one. I think this turned out great, and shows how golden the light was right there at the time due to the sun being just a little behind some clouds.

Es agosto, las ciudades se quedan desiertas y los aeropuertos (y las carreteras) se llenan de gente. Las vacaciones de verano están aquí, son una realidad, y eso significa el peor de mis temores: hacer la maleta. ¿Qué me pongo?

This is a detail (re-arranged by me) of the original by Chicago artist, John Bakker, in a solo exhibition of his recent work (in the Hansen Gallery, Wheaton College, Illinois, Feb-March 2010), that invites audience engagement, and, if desired, re-arrangement, and thus reinterpretation.
Bakker, discovering that he is only the first interpreter of his own work, has thus taken a further step than is normative, by intentionally inviting his audience to engage with, and, if desired, re-arrange, and thus reinterpret his work.

The work, of which this is a detail, is itself based on Albrecht Durer's 1525 woodcut of a man demonstrating one means of perspective drawing, of a recumbent nude woman, as seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/59118828@N00/4373770841/
A rather deep thought hit me yesterday, as i was thinking about
the approaching holidays and the new year.
We arent just changing over to a new year or a new number.
We are ending a decade and beginning a new one.
Mankinds first decade in the 21st century is about to end.
that means we survived ten years after the Y2K scare, and its been
almost a decade since 911.
it got me thinking not just about the things i have done, or experienced
in this past year. Also the places i have been , the cool items i have to play
with or enjoy, but it made me think about the last 10 years i have
travelled, the people i have met, and the ways i have changed.
Even 5 years ago,i would not have believed who i would be now,and the
many crazy things i would have gone thru. if i could tell the "me then" Drummy
about all the coming events he would have laughed and thought i was crazy.
In some ways i would like to go back a decade and tell that 22 year old
"kid" quite a few things about his future.
Im glad i am where i am.
im also in awe this planet hasnt killed itself off by now, in alot of ways.

Malagan ceremonies are the most large-scale and famous of the many events that take place within the malagan culture. They take place irregularly, and are typically large and complex events, taking several days, and requiring months or years of preparation.
While a malagan ceremony is always held in the name of one or more people who have died in recent years, it is not at all merely a mortuary rite. Many other interactions take place within the overall event, including announcements, repayment of debts, recognition of obligations, resolution of disputes, and many other customary activities.
Malagan carvings
Malagan carvings, now world-famous, are the wooden carvings which are created for use in malagan ceremonies. Traditionally these were burnt at the conclusion of the event; in modern times most are now retained, as the carving tradition is now only known by a few.

Tomorrow (Monday, November 30, 2009), is the second anniversay of my dad's passing. I decided to honor him a litte bit over the next few months by fixing up and sharing some photos of his extremely interesting life.
For sixteen years, my dad was the lead Weather Wizard for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. There was a reason for that. The pilots loved flying with him because, as they said, he could "see" the wind.
I think this photo is from the 1996 Balloon Fiesta, the 25th Anniversary year.
This image was scanned from a photo (probably fuji-iso200 and processed at Walmart) I took with our shared, heavily used--over three decades--Minolta X-9.
Background desaturated in PSE6.

Paris Las Vegas is a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada, that is owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment Corp.. As its name suggests, its theme is the city of Paris in France; it includes a half scale, 541-foot-tall replica of the Eiffel Tower, a sign in the shape of the Montgolfier balloon, a two-thirds size Arc de Triomphe, a replica of La Fontaine des Mers, and a 1,200-seat theatre called Le Théâtre des Arts. Joseph-Michel Montgolfier (26 August 1740 – 26 June 1810) and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier (6 January 1745 – 2 August 1799) were the inventors of the montgolfière-style hot air balloon, globe aérostatique. The brothers succeeded in launching the first manned ascent, carrying Étienne into the sky. Later, in December 1783, in recognition of their achievement, their father Pierre was elevated to the nobility and the hereditary appellation of de Montgolfier by King Louis XVI of France.

I had a couple of requests to make Reed and the Dominator clearer......... [yesterdays Jezblog picture](http://www.jezblog.com/index.php?showimage=1529) was too obscure for some :-)) So here is Reed Timmer the nations most admired and most crazed Storm Chaser......... this was also used in todays [Sunday Times Magazine Article Days of Thunder](http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/Magazine/Features/article729570.ece#page-1)......... you can check Reed out [on his facebook page](http://www.facebook.com/ReedTimmerTVN) or at [Tornado Videos](http://www.tornadovideos.net/) or wait for the relevant episode of [Storm Chasers on Discovery Channel](http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/storm-chasers/) to know what he got up to in Hurricane Irene..........
Cheers Jez XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
PS........... Here is a slither of [Christina Lamb's](http://www.christinalamb.net/pages/aboutme.html) excellent article in the [Sunday Times Magazine article..... Days of Thunder](http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/Magazine/Features/article729570.ece#page-1)
"Every so often our convoy comes to a halt and Timmer jumps out and excitedly scans the clouds. Timmer started storm chasing when he was 18. âIâve loved extreme weather since I was five,â he explains. âWhenever there was thunder and lightning Iâd freak out and go into my mumâs room. That fear turned into curiosity. While other kids were watching sport Iâd watch the Weather Channel.â
He watched it so much that his parents had to buy a separate television. âWhen I was 13 there was a huge storm and I stole the family video camera, got pelted by hail and destroyed it. But I loved the sensation.â
Timmer credits weather for helping him become more popular in high school. âI was the classic geek â oversize glasses, small for my age, top of the class in science and practised oboe every day,â he says.
But the teasing stopped when he began to deliver daily forecasts on the local schoolsâ TV network.
There was never any doubt that he would study meteorology. At 18 he went to the University of Oklahoma, in Norman, which boasts Americaâs most severe weather, and where he still lives.
It's a great read about Reed and his Storm chasing crew........ and our time hanging out with them ......... and also about the just awesome, devestating power of storms ........... [Check out the whole thing :-))]([Sunday Times Magazine article..... Days of Thunder](http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/Magazine/Features/article729570.ece#page-1) )
Again this was taken with my very sophisticated 99¢ Ansco Pix Panorama camera (reason explained in last photo) I really wanted to challenge myself into coming up with something that I liked for the new year with just a really basic piece of equipment. I liked what Kiki FL said:
"You are doing exactly what I recommend for some of my photographer friends who are enamored with the camera "arm's race." Get a disposable camera and go out shooting for a day. The art and artistry lives in the mind and spirit of the photographer, not in the equipment - it is merely the facilitator."
I like the warmth that is coming from the windows as a sign of warm possibilities in 2010 for all of you.
This is the last day of the decade...Go and check out the full moon tonight, give a smile away to a stranger, Keep your lenses clean and have a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Excellent! Very rich! I'm new to vegan baking but not cooking.
I used Sugar in the Raw Turbinado sugar, unsweetened Walmart brand applesauce, packed Trader Joe's organic brown sugar, earth balance original (wanted to do the soy-free but Walmart was out), and Trader Joe's semi-chocolate chips. I cooked them on parchment paper and moved the parchment paper and cookies to a cooling rack after taking from the oven.
The usual non-vegan cookie recipe I usually use is Toll house. I usually sub out butter with butter-flavored crisco for a soft cookie. When I would use butter, it would spread and be crispier. So that's where I come from.
I followed exactly as written and took them out at 10 minutes. I like a soft cookie. They hardened up with cooling. The color is darker than the usual non-vegan version but that's probably because the raw sugar is dark. And there's a gritty sugary texture because of the turbinado. Also, it's crispier on the edges. I'm guessing the crispier on the edges because of Earth Balance. I'd like to try with a finer vegan white sugar but it seems turbinado is good for holding moisture. I've had vegan cookies that crumble like a fiend so would rather not have crumble cookie syndrome and switching might do that.
I've got them in the fridge now so will be very curious how well they do with storage.
Served with almond milk. Only non-dairy milk that I've found I can drink straight.
The title on the Russian site devoted to SPG is – Rafts on the [Catherine] Canal: city of Shlisselburg.
A little poking around on the internet reveals that this is unlikely to be the Catherine canal (which runs between the Volkhov and Syas rivers, says Wikipedia), and is more likely the Peter Canal, that is the section built during the time of Peter the Great. That section of the canal had two locks, one of which we can see in the background, along with boats waiting to enter. You can find this locale on Google Earth, in "street view," much changed of course, where the Russian label tells us it is part of the Marinskii waterway, which is true, but only in a general sense. You can see on Google Earth too, that, over the years, the canal has silted up and filled in, and in places has actually been narrowed by builders needed good footings for their constructions. Another page I found said that the stonework we see on the locks and banks dates from the time of the canal's original construction (late 1720s) another that it dates from repairs and renovations done in 1836; the Wikipedia article doesn't note any work done in the 1830s, so my guess is that this stonework – which still endures, and looks to be in pretty good shape – is the same built by battalions of Peter's soldiers in the eighteenth century.
Note, in the right background, two huge stacks of logs, as high as the buildings next to them, and just as long, a truly immense stockpile. I wonder whether the logs in the foreground are about to join one of those huge piles (likely) or whether they have been taken from the piles (less likely). My guess would be that they are piled up there until they can be loaded on a transport and taken to a mill that is closer to a larger population centre, but that is speculation on my part.
This was a difficult shot to register because the logs moved around on the water as SPG took his three shots. People in the background moved; boats lining up to get into the lock moved; and one of the two fellows in the foreground took a quick look around to see if SPG was finished yet. So I had to do a lot of piece by piece compositing of sections of the shot to get everything to more or less line up. Lots of figures in the middle distance and in the faraway existed only as coloured blobs on one plate or another, so in several cases, I simply erased those partial figures from the shot. A red colour cast at the bottom of the shot proved more problematic, but I have reduced it as much as I can.
Update, 2014: I've gone over the shot one more time, trying to reduce the purple tones, to adjust the contrast on the logs, and reduce some of the fringing on the cloud images reflected in the water. I think, for now, this is the best I can do.
Update, 2024: Another revision, courtesy of Photoshop's updated tools, particularly using the Camera Raw filter.

02/01/09 Riomaggiore (SP) - Italy -
The "Via dell'Amore" (Pathway of Love) is a pathway linking Riomaggiore to Manarola and is probably one of the most famous and renowned touristic routes of "Le Cinque Terre". There's a very impressive panoramic view on the cliffs. At the end of the path, it is covered with a gallery of arches, wihich is an art gallery indeed, all covered with paintings and murales (freely made by tourists).
I like this shot because on the left you can make out the airport and some planes, while on the right the construction equipment can be seen approaching over the not very distant horizon.
O'Hare International Airport is currently undergoing a massive expansion of its runway network. The only problem was that they do not have enough room to expand and therefore pursued an aggressive series of maneuvers to acquire the property they needed. This meant that a cemetery must be moved, and dozens of houses and businesses must be bought and moved out of neighboring Bensenville. Here are a few shots from one of the streets.

like the face of a newborn child,
innocent, unknowing.
Winter's end
promises of a long lost friend.
Speaks to me of comfort.
But I fear
I have nothing to give.
I have so much to lose here in this lonely place,
Tangled up in our embrace.
There's there's nothing I'd like better than to fall.
But I fear I have nothing to give.
Wind in time,
Rapes the flower trembling on the vine,
And nothing yields to shelter it from above.
They say temptation will destroy our love.
The never ending hunger.
But I fear
I have nothing to give,
I have so much to lose here in this lonely place,
Tangled up in our embrace.
There's nothing I'd like better than to fall.
But I fear I have nothing to give.
I have so much to lose.
I have nothing to give.
We have so much to lose...

If you have ever hear or read that term "the photographic magic hour" and "the golden light" and always wondered what it really meant, then this photo illustrates it very well.
One hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset, is the time of the day where the near horizontal rays of the sun must cross the longest distance across our atmosphere and as a result the colors light up with a strong orange cast depending on the atmospheric conditions. Usually some clouds and dust will reinforce this natural phenomenon.
For photographers it is a pure gift from mother nature: it is like having a giant candlelight that produces the same warm colors as interior lights on day film. This lighting condition produces an incredible mood to the scene. Some photographers say that lighting and the quality of light is what turns a good photo into a great one.
Here this lighting was perfect to describe the mood of this festive family having a great time picnicking at the lake. The temperature was perfect and the golden light of the sunset was adding some warmth to their happy expressions.

~~~I have all the characteristics of a Human Being : blood, flesh, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust. Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip
~ There is an idea of myself, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and although I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping you,and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: I simply am not there.~~~
this Week has been one of dwelling on the past alot. so many things have
sprung up in my memory and distracted me from the present.
many good memories with wonderful people, but somehow this has
brought me to feeling weighed down by the passing of time.
How often in our lives, when good times surround us, do we really
appreciate them for what they are?
It always seems to be looking back on special memories that makes us ache
to have them again, altho at the time we were simply Content.
Some time in the last couple weeks i have found myself concerned
about something i haven't before. Comments and views. how ridiculous,right?
I don't do this for peoples praise,and i honestly dont want people to
give me anything than their blunt personal opinion.. . but i have felt a little more
needy as of late. a trait i dont normally have,and i certainly do NOT like.
and since i have now recognized this, and don't like it...
i have rewired my brain to go back to where it was.
And, a day later (today) ... the Lovely and talented BITCA put This Up , and
completely was the highlight of my day.
I have never been one to take
compliments well, and i dont deal well with being the center of attention,
But her words and her thoughts warmed me. So thanks Lady :P you are too kind.
slim cessna's auto club in concert in toronto at lee's palace, monday 20 july, 2009. i left the nikon at home and took my crappy little point-and-shoot, regretfully, but i had a quick chat with a sensible photographer there and when he publishes his shots in a couple of weeks i'll add a link to them here.
a great band, and if you don't know them, go have a look and a listen sometime. here's a link to their website, and one of many tracks available on youtube, hold on (from their self-titled album, available through their site or alternative tentacles).
in ottawa? they're playing at babylon tuesday, 21 july. go see them, buy some cds and don't worry, they'll be there (last time they were due to play ottawa, they got stopped at the border by some dick in a uniform - we drove from toronto to see them and only found out about the cancellation at the club). last show they did in toronto was 2003 or 2004 at the horseshoe, so we were glad to get to see them again.
apologies to the band for not getting shots of everyone.
Margam Park is a remarkably diverse and varied landscape within which there is evidence of over 4,000 years of continuous habitation and use by man and as such represents a rare and valuable learning resource and a heritage attraction of considerable distinction. It is of exceptional historic and scenic value and has some of the country’s finest architectural treasures in its magnificent setting
The 850 acre country estate situated two miles east of Port Talbot on the narrow coastal plain, set on the southern slopes of Mynydd Margam, a largely forested mountain rising to a height of 349m AOD, is one of the major ancient settlements of Glamorgan. It’s history can be traced back to pre-historic times, Bronze and Iron Age relics abound the area, and evidence exists of Roman and extensive Celtic occupation, the deer herd probably introduced by the Romans.
It has been a place of particular religious importance throughout it’s history. The Norman Abbey, founded in the mid 12th Century was, until its dissolution at the hands of Henry VIII, a religious centre of major importance in South Wales. The remains of the Abbey are extensive, the ruined Chapter House being of exceptional architectural quality.
Following the Dissolution, successive owners built and rebuilt their houses on the Abbey site. The surviving buildings form a unique record of its historical and architectural development. In the late 18th century considerable redevelopment took place, the area was laid out on classical lines as parkland and the famous Orangery built which remains one of the largest and most outstanding buildings of its kind in the country.
In the early 19th century the park was further enhanced and extended and the present Margam Castle was built. This Tudor ‘style’ Mansion remained in use until the end of the second world war, and the ensuing quarter of a century of neglect took its toll and the building was in a badly deteriorated condition when acquired by the present owners.
The Park was officially opened to the public in 1977 since which some four million people have visited to enjoy the countryside, gardens and heritage; for environmental education and to use the facilities socially.
Well, here is another in my [occasional series on containers](http://www.jezblog.com/index.php?showimage=1316) ........ Containers....... [For shipping and world trade](http://www.jezblog.com/index.php?showimage=1231&PHPSESSID=253e73527f577b8f5f3d5c19047cb3a1&reply_to=47309&PHPSESSID=253e73527f577b8f5f3d5c19047cb3a1)......... but right now Im really thinking of the containers.......... Yeah the actual containers themselves...... and what's in them...... if any of it could keep or would be worth keeping for a very long time........
Today I went to the [British Museum to see an amazing exhibition of 'The Book of the Dead'](http://www.britishmuseum.org/whats_on/all_current_exhibitions/book_of_the_dead.aspx) . Really it is looking at the religion of Ancient Egypt. The beliefs and spells to guide the dead of their time into the life everlasting........ Into the 'Field of Reeds'.
"The Field of Reeds. The God who is in it is Ra.
The very high mountain.
The Mound of transfigured spirits.
The Mound of Wenet. The god who is in it is the Destroyers of Souls.
The river of flaming fire.
The Mound of Kheraha. The god who is in it is Hapi."
(spell 150 names of the mounds of the Netherworld)
The book of the dead took the form of hundreds of spells written to protect and guide the spirit through the tests that they must pass to make it into eternal life and the prospect of riding with the Sun God Ra on his boat each day as he rode across the skies.
It's amazing that 3000 year old bits of papyrus survive to this day and are on display to pass on all that was sacred to the ancient Egyptians. Hey that in itself is a pretty amazing testament to the way they preserved their dead and the containers they buried them in ...... as each individuals book of the dead was buried with its deceased owner........ Often they almost clutched it ........ Mummified in it in their sarcophagus.
I don't know if any of our religious texts will stand a reading in 3000 years time......... or need to be stuck on to embalmed corpses......... and I wonder what of our civilization of now will still survive to be marveled at in a distant future.
I don't know what could, should or would survive. But Im not sure any of the stuff in these containers is it................
I'm not sure where you would put anything you wanted to keep....... something you wanted to be presented to the world in 3000 years from now........ maybe on the internet..........??????
Although Harv must be working on a pretty amazing series of catacombs under his house........ As today he tells me he unearthed an unopened box of........ :
"This is a FULL BOX of SEALED Agfa Record Rapid (50 sheets), a paper considered to be one of the best ever made.
Agfa stopped production of this paper in the 90's, it has acquired cult status as being 'state of the art' exhibition paper.
The box is factory sealed, unopened, undamaged and was safely stored in cool dark conditions. (see pictures)
This is a very rare opportunity, I doubt you'll see an unopened box again as they are simply not available anywhere.
Much of my portfolio is printed on this paper, if I still had a darkroom I'd keep it but I switched to digital years ago."
The like of such a valuable and rare find ........ can only be dug from ancient protected places........ Protected from the desert sun and away from grave robbers and sand vipers............ Yes it can only be found in ancient hidden rare places.......... er.......... or otherwise you can bid for it on ebay ........ hehehehehehehe.......... :
This is a portrait of Nobel Prize winning American playwright Eugene O'Neill - taken by the photographer Carl Van Vechten in 1933.
It was taken with an early Leica, and a (then "new" technology) Leitz Summar 5cm f/2 lens.
The original is now held by the United States Library of Congress, along with many other works by Van Vechten.
An extraordinary image I feel, given the times, and the men (both photographer and subject).
"In 1932 Van Vechten moved on to a new career, from novelist to photographer. While he was always interested in photography, it was the introduction of the new Leica camera, portable and using the inexpensive 35 mm film, that caused him to take photography seriously"
This is a quotation from the biographical details of the photographer as published by Brandeis University, along with access to many of his images, here:
lts.brandeis.edu/research/archives-speccoll/findingguides...
It doesn't tell the half of it.
You can view more of Carl Van Vechten's astonishing work, now preserved at the Library of Congress here:
And you can see the influence of Oskar Barnack's Leica camera, all around you every day.
I don't know but for some reason, I'm not feeling like my usual self today. I mean,
while at work I was playing cards with co-workers.. pretty fun.. But after I left, I felt down. I tried listening to some music but couldn't cheer myself up. plus they're the same repeated songs I've been listening to for the past 3 weeks. I don't own an iPod. I play my music from my phone so its pretty hard to be uploading and downloading songs with a busy schedule.
I have this mini shoot with one of Juan's friends tomorrow. First one I'm getting paid. I think this feeling is because of that. I don't understand why I'm feeling so gloomy. Usually when i go out on photo shoots, I get all excited. I don't know. I told myself I'll let this pass. Hopefully I'll feel better before tomorrow.
So I got home from work. I decided on buying new LED flashlights and a Bulb flashlight for my dad. When I got back, I wanted to test them out. I first thought of a self portrait but since it was still daytime, too bright. I grabbed my Kalimar 50mm and used it as my model instead. I had 4 LED flashlights, two in the front and 2 in the back, left and right. and one Bulb light on my left facing at an angle.. After a couple of shots, I got this one.. I'll post the setup below..
I thought of my cam to cheer me up a bit.. and it did =]] but theres always tomorrow...
You have different experiences when you do different things... I read that thing in some non-descript book and took a wee bit seriously when I went to Pilani this May. Gurgaon was heavy with traffic and potholes while the outskirts were dustier and had more potholes. Some were minnows but made you jump, while a few others were deep pits. Have to see it to believe it. It amused me to think they might have chanced upon an oil find. But after a while when Rajasthan came closer, it was all home again.
A bit different, however for me. Seven years before, only a few students in BITS used to have cell phones in and around Pilani. Big gadgets with nasty buttons. Siemens, Motorola and the likes... Now, every student has one, even two.
There is still no water in many villages. Tractors supply water, and women drive them too. The pigeons around these areas seem to be lazy at this time of the year, May. Bereft of water, may be, they hop around the roads, get crushed by the vehicles. Munnaji is doing good. Our days were better, he said. 'Now, ANC has 300 menu items! Who'll come to me?' he asks, leaving me a little more retrospective and a little confused. Pappu, without even concentrating much can sense anybody's coordinates in Sky Lawns. I was behind the prohibited area, looking at the other side of the campus when Chotu arrived there with a Mango Shake in his hand. Pappu ji had told him where I was. How far can one see, I say...
More girls wear T-shirts. Chimpu is still the busiest in C'not. His white ambassador stands outside housing booze. Hemanth is lax, Golden Dragon's dosas taste better. Exotica is no more... The theka is... Palam Singh, in his courteous manner, invited me to lunch in VKB mess. Had those naans, french fries, paneer and aloo - the Sunday lunch. They were delicious.
On the road, there are moments when you think of nothing else but the road and how good you feel on it. I wish the road was longer and I had more time to cover it. But for this summer, this ride was good enough to keep the batteries charged till winter.
La Catedral de Morelia es un recinto religioso sede de la Arquidiócesis de Morelia de la Iglesia católica en México. Se encuentra ubicada como su nombre propiamente lo dice en la ciudad de Morelia, capital del estado de Michoacán, México. La catedral se localiza en el primer cuadro de la ciudad, conformando la traza del Centro Histórico de Morelia. El edificio fue construido en el siglo XVIII en la época de la Colonia Española, es de estilo barroco y esta realizado en cantera rosada que le da un color peculiar y característico.
# Arquitectónicamente la Catedral de Morelia comparándose con otras Catedrales de México, es similar a la Catedral Metropolitana de la Ciudad de México, Catedral de Puebla, e inclusive en su interior a la Catedral de Guadalajara.
# La catedral es la edificación más emblemática y representativa de Morelia dada su altura, ya que cuenta con dos altas torres, que se divisan por todo el valle de la ciudad. Por su altura, las torres de la Catedral de Morelia (66.8 m) son las cuartas más altas de México, después de las torres del Santuario Guadalupano (Catedral Inconclusa) en Zamora de Hidalgo (105 m), de la catedral de Villahermosa (80 m) y del Santuario de Guadalupe, en San Luis Potosí (68 m).
# Cuenta con una Iluminación escénica de singular belleza colocada por la empresa que iluminó la Torre Eiffel de París. Los fines de semana la catedral ofrece un espectáculo de luz y sonido con esta iluminación.
# La catedral está dedicada a la Transfiguración y en su interior alberga dos imágenes muy veneradas, Sagrado Corazón de Jesús que es el santo patrono de la ciudad, y el Señor de la Sacristía un Cristo muy antiguo realizado en pasta de caña de maíz. El cual es muy visitado y querido por la feligresía.
# Su belleza arquitectónica y su historia son otras razones por las cuales se ha convertido en un icono de la ciudad.
# En su interior este recinto dada su belleza, sonorización acústica y espaciosidad, figura como escenario de diversos eventos artísticos y culturales como el Festival Internacional de Órgano de Morelia, y el Festival Internacional de Música de Morelia.
La actual catedral de Morelia no ha sido la única catedral que ha tenido la ciudad, ya que en 1580, cuando los poderes civiles y eclesiásticos de Michoacán fueron trasladados de Pátzcuaro a Valladolid (anterior nombre de Morelia), se inauguró una catedral, muy inferior a la actual en tamaño y valor artístico. Esa construcción se ubicaba en la esquina de las actuales calles de Corregidora y Abasolo. Sin embargo, debido al crecimiento que experimentó la ciudad a finales del s. XVI e inicios del XVII, así como por causa de un incendio que en 1584 afectó severamente el anterior edificio catedralicio, se hizo necesario pensar en otro templo, más grande, sólido e importante. Por ello es que a inicios del s. XVII el cabildo catedralicio comenzó las gestiones para la construcción de la nueva catedral.
Muchos proyectos fueron propuestos, pero hasta mediados de ese siglo fue aceptado el proyecto del arquitecto italiano Vicenzo Barrochio, también conocido como Vicente Barroso de la Escayola por parte del Virrey Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, Duque de Alburquerque el 22 de marzo de 1660 concluyendo continuos trámites y proyectos de construcción durante un largo período de casi 80 años.
El día 6 de mayo de 1660 la primera piedra de la construcción fue colocada por el obispo Fray Marcos Ramírez del Prado. La construcción estuvo a cargo del propio Vicenzo Barrochio hasta el año de su muerte, acaecida en 1692, razón por la cual el gran arquitecto no pudo ver concluida su obra monumental. Sin embargo, solo 52 años después del deceso del maestro, sus discípulos lograron terminar la titánica tarea arquitectónica, por lo que la magnífica obra fue concluida en 1744.
La catedral sufrió diversos saqueos por parte del ejército independentista, en el año de 1810. Hacia fines del siglo XIX se construyó la reja perimetral que delimita el atrio. A finales de los años 90 del siglo XX se efectuaron diversas obras de restauración exteriores e interiores, con lo cual se preservó mejor la belleza del edificio. También, en los primeros años del siglo XXI, se inauguró la nueva iluminación escénica de esta catedral de Morelia.
The current cathedral of Morelia was not the only cathedral in the city has had since 1580, when civil and ecclesiastical powers were transferred from Patzcuaro Michoacan to Valladolid (Morelia previous name), opened a cathedral, much lower the current size and artistic value. That building was located on the corner of the present streets of Corregidor and Abasolo. However, due to growth experienced by the city at the end of s. Sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and because of a fire in 1584 severely affected the former cathedral building, it became necessary to think of another temple, larger, robust and important. That is why at the beginning of s. XVII the cathedral chapter began efforts to build the new cathedral.
Many projects were proposed, but until mid-century the project was accepted by the Italian architect Vincenzo Barrochio, also known as the Plaster Vicente Barroso by the Viceroy Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva, Duke of Albuquerque on March 22, 1660 concluding continuous procedures and construction projects over a long period of almost 80 years.
On May 6, 1660 the first stone of the building was laid by Bishop Fray Marcos Ramírez del Prado. The building itself was given by Vicenzo Barrochio until his death in 1692, why the great architect could not see completed his monumental work. However, only 52 years after the death of the teacher, his pupils got through the daunting task of architecture, so that the magnificent work was completed in 1744.
The cathedral suffered several raids by the army for independence, in the year 1810. By the end of the nineteenth century built the perimeter fence that marks the atrium. In the late 90s of the twentieth century restoration work carried out various internal and external, thereby better preserved the beauty of the building. Also, in the early twenty-first century, opened the new stage lighting of the cathedral of Morelia.
