In memory of those who perished 32 years ago today, 30th September, R.I.P.

At about 3am on the 30th September 1976 the Admiral Van Tromp, a new powerful Scarborough trawler ran aground on the scaur at Black Nab, Saltwick Bay. There was thick fog and a heavy swell running.

The Whitby lifeboat, William & Mary Durham, was launched and both Whitby's and Robin Hood's Bay's coastguards were called out. Several rocket lines were fired by the coastguards, but the crew of five trapped in the wheel house, were unable to reach them. The Watson type lifeboat tried to reach the trawler by dropping anchor and drifting back to the wreck. On the first attempt the line parted. A stronger anchor from one of the trawlers standing off was used and Cox'n Robert Allen tried again. However the sea was too strong. With waves washing over her and three of the crew injured the lifeboat got to within 30 feet of the stricken vessel.

As daylight broke the Van Tromp lay on her side with waves breaking over her. One of the crew was spotted clinging to Black Nab, he was saved by the crew of the inshore lifeboat who drove the D class lifeboat at full speed onto a ledge and the man was grabbed just as a large wave broke over the boat and washed it back into the waters. The other four were washed ashore, but sadly two did not survive.

A silver medal was awarded to coxswain Robert Allen and a bronze medal to helmsman Richard Robinson for gallantry.

History: Eus smells of the aromas of orchards, ancient olive groves and guarrigue. Built in a terrace shape, sheltered from the wind, its name comes from the green oaks (yeuses) that border the village.

Conceived for defence, Eus successfully repelled the French in 1598 and the Spaniards in 1793. St Vincent’s church (18th century) stands where a Roman camp used to be. The roman-style chapel is dedicated to the saint patron of wine-makers. It opens onto a 13th marble porch. (source: www.cometofrance.com)

OoOo On Black

Today was a good day! The sun was shining, the birds were singing, it was 70 degrees out, and things are blooming!! I just love this time of year. I mean, to watch the world around you wake up and rejoice, is just amazing. Adam and I took a little romp around the neighborhood this afternoon and this pear tree caught my eye, The blooms were so pretty and were popping out everywhere. Hope you guys enjoy looking at them as much as I did!

Oh, and I'm on Adele kick these days. Enjoy the lyrics to another one of her songs!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Found myself today singing out your name,

You said I'm crazy,

If I am I'm crazy for you.

Sometimes sitting in the dark wishing you were here

Turns me crazy,

But it's you who makes me lose my head.

And every time I'm meant to be acting sensible

You drift into my head

And turn me into a crumbling fool.

Tell me to run and I'll race,

If you want me to stop I'll freeze,

And if you are me gonna leave, just hold me closer baby,

And make me crazy for you.

Crazy for you.

Lately with this state I'm in I can't help myself but spin.

I wish you'd come over,

Send me spinning closer to you.

My oh my, how my blood boils, it's sweet taste for you,

Strips me down bare

And gets me into my favourite mood.

I keep on trying, fighting these feelings away,

But the more I do,

The crazier I turn into.

Pacing floors and opening doors,

Hoping you'll walk through

And save me boy,

Because I'm too crazy for you.

Crazy for you

Let all that are to mirth inclined

Consider well and bear in mind

What our good God for us has done

In sending his beloved Son

For to redeem our souls from thrall

Christ is the saviour of us all.

The twenty-fifth day of December

We have good cause to remember

In Bethlehem upon that morn

There was a blessed Messiah born

But mark how all things came to pass

The inn and lodgings filled was

That they could find no room at all

But in a straw-filled oxes stall.

Near Bethlehem some shepherds keep

Their flocks and herds of feeding sheep

To whom God's angels did appear

Which put the shepherds in great fear

With thankful heart and joyful mind

The shepherds went this babe to find.

And as the heavenly angel told

They did our saviour Christ behold.

Three eastern wise men from afar,

Directed by a glorious star

Came boldly on and made no stay,

Until they came where Jesus lay.

And being come unto that place

Where the blessed Messiah was

They humbly laid before his feet

Their gifts of gold and incense sweet.

See how the Lord of heaven and earth

Shewd himself lowly in his birth;

A sweet example for mankind

To learn to bear an humble mind.

Let all your songs and praises be

Unto his heavenly majesty

And evermore amongst our mirth

Remember Christ our Saviour's birth.

1. Juan José Padilla, 2. Acometida, 3.

Aunque no sean artistas.

Besalú is a town in the Garrotxa region, located at 150 metre above sea level, covering an area of 4.81 km2. Bisuldunum, as its origins suggest, was a fortress between two rivers: the Fluvià in the south and the Capellades in the north. Well communicated, Besalú is located at the meeting point of three regions: Alt Empordà, Pla de l'estany and Garrotxa. Besalú began to gain importance as the capital of an independent county following the death of Guifré el Pilós (902); It lost this status with the death of Bernat III- son-in-law of Ramon Berenguer III- leaving no suvirvors. As a result, Besalú became part of Barcelona. In 1966, it was declared a "National Historic-Artistic Ensemble" due to its high architectural value.

Castellano

ENGLISH

Sitges (pronounced [ˈsidʒəs] in Catalan; [ˈsɪdʒəs] in English), Catalonia, Spain is a small city about 35 kilometers southwest of Barcelona renowned worldwide for its Film Festival and Carnival. Between the hills and the sea, it is known for its much-frequented beaches, nightspots, and historical sites.

While the roots of Sitges' artsy reputation date back to the late 19th century, when Catalan painter Santiago Rusiñol took up residence there during the summer, the town really came into its own during the 1960s, when it was the only center for the counterculture on the mainland of Spain (then still under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco), and became known as a sort of "Ibiza in miniature".

Today, Sitges can be considered a dynamic cultural oasis, basing its economy on tourism and culture offering more than 4,500 hotel beds, half of them in four-star hotels. The firm commitment for quality infrastructures has converted Sitges into a first-class destination in terms of tourism of congresses, conferences, seminars and company meetings in the Mediterranean area.

Sitges is also called the St. Tropez of Spain with property prices approaching those of the most expensive European cities, the main reason for this being the beautiful setting by the sea and the surrounding Parc Natural del Garraf. Proximity to Barcelona airport is also a major advantage.

Modern Sitges, preserving important references from the Middle Age and the old farmers’ and fishermen’s town, offers visitors an impressive architectural and cultural heritage, the result of initiatives by artists, cultural energizers and patrons like Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas, Miquel Utrillo or Charles Deering. Thanks to them, Sitges was a reference point for writers, musicians and other intellectuals and became an important center for disseminating Modernism and the "Americanos", who, after returning with their "fortune" from their American adventure, commissioned large mansions from Modernist and Noucentista (post Art Nouveau) architects.

Why take a photo of someone else's artwork? Because of context really. I think the context transforms this into something more than just a plain derivative.

This photograph is a copy of someone else's street art. The street art is a copy of Diane Arbus' famous photograph. Diane Arbus' famous photograph is a "copy" of a living breathing boy. Only the boy is real... all the artwork that his minute facial expression has inspired were just copies and copies of copies...

To me - the wooden fence is also a copy. It's a copy of the brick wall behind it. There is no real purpose for the wooden fence to exist, but it's there. Which in my opinion ties this whole thing together...

This is certainly a very subjective way of seeing this. You might see something completely different or nothing at all.

Katharina Fritsch roots her work in the personal, often drawing from childhood memories of familiar circumstances or chance encounters. Her references engage broad aspects of folklore and culture through meticulous reproductions of everyday objects, which she formally manipulates with shifts in scale and color. Made strange by repetition and siting, her sculptural installations are both seductive and disturbing. In the Proustian sense of activating memory, Fritsch’s works create an unnerving familiarity that is subsequently destabilized by the realization that we are seeing a form, a character, or an object for the very first time.

While Fritsch’s painstakingly handcrafted objects are easily mistaken for manufactured items, the artist employs a complicated and time-consuming fabrication process that begins with sketches and scale models. Molded by hand, worked and reworked, each object is subjected to multiple processes of casting or layering. The completed yet still idiosyncratic forms are then painted in bold, highly saturated colors with matte, nonreflective surfaces, creating a sense of otherworldliness. In Fritsch’s words, “Often my sculptures have a matte surface so that there is no reflection whatsoever from the surroundings. That increases the impression of a vision that one cannot grasp.”

First try on close up macro shot. I don't have a macro lens, just using a cheap $25 pack of three close up filter on the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 VC. The result isn't too bad especially for just $25 investment! But I'm thinking to get a real macro lens now.......

As photographers we all experience moments, a time, place and setting where everything comes together, where you can instantly tell it’s special. The moment itself, to steal a phrase, that clicks. There is no wonder what you captured, but rather the excitement as you are shooting where you know you’ve done something, maybe that you’ve never done before. That each and every image has the potential to be memorable and “the one”. Your race back to upload the images isn’t with a sense of, “did I capture the moment”, you know you have.

Approximately a year and a half ago I ventured out to Death Valley and the Death Valley Dunes outside of Stovepipe Wells. As I chronicled previously…conditions were less than pristine. While happy with some of the results, I knew there could be something more, that I had somehow missed out on a memorable photographic experience.

This weekend I took my first photographic road trip with Andree. In part a kind of test in our new burgeoning relationship…how would she handle me being in full photography mode! I am happy to say things went absolutely fantastic, and I’ll write more about that later.

As for this morning she was more than willing to wake up at 4am as we sleepily jumped in the car and drove from Furnace Creek Ranch to Stovepipe Wells. We parked the car, gathered the gear, and slogged out to the sand. We stopped a few times as I pondered the locale I wanted…the advantage of being the first people out on the sand! I saw the big dunes, and we headed out towards them. As we got closer I stopped and figured this is where we’ll setup…only to spy another dune, a few hundred yards up (and another 50 to 100 feet UP!). We journeyed up the dunes and “made camp”.

This morning there was no wondering…will there be light. A cloudless sky, crisp cool air…and the envy of all the other photographers who were starting to make their ways out in to the sand!

As the sun started to rise, so did my excitement…I felt we were in the perfect spot. Sure, I was a tad bit worried about the 100-400 lens I had dropped, broke the filter on, and now couldn’t get the filter ring off the lens (I had to break the glass out of the lens so it was usable!)…but that was ok. And sure, it didn’t help to drop another lens in the sand…which Andree willingly cleaned for me. But for the most part…things were in perfect order. The sun rose over the mountains and I was mesmerized, the shadows, textures, and colors of the dunes that are so appealing came to life. This time there was no breathless hurry up and shoot…I had all the time I needed. Carefully compose, frame, expose and shoot. Returning to various formations to see how the scene had changed as the light changed. I was in heaven!

2 hours later we were done. The sun had risen high in the sky and it was time to head back to the car for a breakfast of beer, salami, and cheese (I love roadtrip food!).

Oh, and to the gentleman who walked up on us. Sure we had a great locale, and I understand you wanted to reach the highest dune. I also know you saw there were multiple paths to said dune. So, I’m not sure why you were surprised when you walked up to us and then stated “I don’t want to ruin your sand”…that I simply replied “I’d appreciate” and continued to shoot. You obviously knew it was a great scene, and you obviously knew because you took the path that was easily seen there was another way up the dunes without walking through my shoots. But, I guess I’ll just say thanks.

Here is one of the shots from the morning shoot, a shoot I can easily say was probably one of my greatest shoots. At this point I’m like a kid in the candy store. As Andree said to me last night “what point is rating them, if they are all 3 or above?”

“Have faith.” 2 little words… But when said by those you love & trust, these very 2 little words go all about & around you, skittering, like mice looking for cheese. They search, retrieve & bring back to you that one burning amber of aspiration that you had so carefully hidden within yourself in a fit of rage & despair. And they produce it infront of you with such a flourish, its natural & alright to feel a little idiotic… ;)

A lot of people have asked what comes next.

The answer? We don't know any better than you do.

I know that I met this amazing, funny, sweet person, and I'm completely wild over her. That I've had her in every minute of my life for the last week, and that every minute felt right. And that tomorrow everything changes.

After that?

I really can't say. I wish I knew. Really, we're taking it minute by minute and sometimes it feels like we're spinning out of control.

We say our strange goodbyes and go back to phonecalls and webcams - the technologies that once seemed fresh and exciting are a step backward; a step apart. It's going to be hard. I know that much.

I'm hoping a California trip is in the cards.

But I can only see as far as Monday. School begins. Xelia will be gone. We're left with memories and marks; a cold spot in the bed where someone is missing.

The Huntington Beach Pier is a municipal pier located in Huntington Beach, California. At 1,850 feet (560 m) in length, it is one of the longest public piers on the West Coast. (The longest is Oceanside Pier at 1,942 feet). It has been damaged or destroyed four times; in 1912, 1939, 1983 and most recently on January 17, 1988 destroying the End Cafe for the second time in the decade.

The most recent reincarnation of the pier is designed of reinforced concrete to withstand 31-foot (9.4 m) waves or a 7.0 magnitude earthquake and uses an increased space between piles to accommodate surfers - as requested by the City. The pier slopes gently up toward the seaward end in a straight line which alternates with three octagonal platforms and one rotated square (108 feet on a side) that forms a diamond at the pier's seaward end. Not only is the pier structurally sound, it also retains a number of design elements from the original pier including haunches at the pile caps and corbels supporting light standards.

The pier is frequented by sport fishermen as well as surfing spectators. A restaurant is located at the end of the pier.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,

but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.

But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.

Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.

Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.

But the greatest of these is love.

Lanuza, Huesca (Spain).

I was driving on the road that borders the marsh, and I could not resist.

ENGLISH

Lanuza is a small village located in the Pyrenean of Huesca, Aragón, Spain. It is in the left border of the marsh to which it gives name, in that dam up waters of the Gállego river. Lanuza belongs to the municipal term of Sallent de Gállego, in the region of High Gállego.

The name of Lanuza seems to derive from the latinized celtic term moor or wool, that means “slope”, occurring the circumstance that the surrounding place to the town (today submerged) was in its day occupied by extensive prairies and grass. Its existence appears documented from 13th century and in 1488 already it counted on 20 homes. Along with Sallent, it formed one of the three historical "quiñones" in which the Valley of Tena was divided administratively.

Prosperously and eminently cattle dealer in her origins, the construction of the dam in 1976 caused the gradual and forced unhabitation of the locality until being vacated completely in 1978. Victim of plunder and the abandonment, in the decade of the 90 old inhabitants was able to recover the not submerged properties and initiate a revitalization process still active.

CASTELLANO

This image is a view looking east from the riverfront in Windsor, Ontario. This is Belle Isle Bridge (Douglas MacArthur Bridge) which takes you from east Detroit to Belle Isle Island which sits in the middle of the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor and almost at the opening of Lake St. Clair. It was a bit of a hazy day and I was experimenting with some filters....and of course some editing...and ended up with this minimalist rendition. This was inspired by another one of my flickr friends (Digit_AL)...fantastic minimalistic work!

Olympus E-30, Zuiko 12-60, Heliopan Polarizer

We spent a beautiful summer day in Low Tatras on Saturday. Left home in the morning and hiked from Srdiečko to Chopok, Ďumbier and back to Srdiečko where we left our car. Ďumbier (2,043 m) and Chopok (2,024 m) are two highest peaks of Low Tatras and are connected by the long distance E8 European walking route leading 4,700 km (2,920 miles) across Europe, from Kerry in Ireland to Istanbul in Turkey.

We had a nice sunny weather at the beginning so I was testing a new Heliopan polarizer.. yup it's a top quality ;) Anyways it got a bit cloudy later and all those beautiful panoramic views were quite hazy. So I tried to focus on nice details instead.

This shot shows area specific layers of big rocks, dwarf pines and green grass in the summer.

Thanks for looking!

Your feedback is always appreciated ;)

forever autumn

The summer sun is fading as the year grows old

And darker days are drawing near

The winter winds will be much colder

Now you're not here

I watch the birds fly south across the Autumn sky

And one by one they disappear

I wish that I was flying with them

Now you're not here

Like the sun through the trees you came to love me

Like a leaf on the breeze you blew away

Through Autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way

You always loved this time of year

Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now

Cause you're not here

Like the sun through the trees you came to love me

Like a leaf on the breeze you blew away

A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes

As if to hide a lonely tear

My life will be forever Autumn

Cause you're not here

Cause you're not here

Cause you're not here

a rare, quiet and calm moment captured of caesar just a few moments ago..usually during the day he's so full of energy and just wants to play fetch with his soccer ball and while i got a bunch of shots of him trying to catch a ball in the backyard, those looked boring and plain to me. they show off his physical abilities but i wanted to show his softer, more gentle side.

it took a few minutes to get him to lay like this..the treat i had in my one hand initially made him even more excited but i waited it out and it paid off...if there's one thing this dog teaches me, it's patience. i do love him for that as well as the incredible companionship he provides us all.

technically, someone had asked me about my indoor shots and while i'm not really great at using my (external) flash..i have figured out that bouncing it over and behind my head works best..i shoot with the camera on manual as well as the flash, that way i can take a few test shots then adjust +/- a few stops if need be.

Well, we did it, we went camping. It was so nice when we got there. We got the tent set up had some beers and mom some wine. I went and got us some firewood so we could have a campfire that night. The campfire didn't happen because the rain came in. It was scary, with the lightening and then seconds later the thunder. That storm last a long time and by the time it was over, it was to dark to have a fire and make dinner over it. So we had a sandwich for dinner. The next day the we went fishing in this beautiful little lake but we didn't catch anything but the rocks on the bottom of the lake. After fishing I drove mom around the campground and then around Show Low. When we returned the Ranger told us that the storm the night before was the worst storm they had all summer. We got back to the tent and guess what....you got it, it started to rain. This time it rained for 7 hours straight. It did lighten up enough for me to start a quick campfire to grill our hot dogs but that didn't last long and back to the downpour. In the few days that we were gone, we go to know the inside of our tent very well. I told mom she had to go again because this wasn't what it was suppose to be. So, we will be heading off again one of these weekends.

The Riverfront Park Rotary Fountain is located on Howard Street at the South entrance to Riverfront Park. It is a popular attraction for beating the Summer heat. The kids love it!

Dedicated on September 1st, 2005 to “the people of Spokane” and under the care of the Spokane Parks Department, the fountain is destined to be a popular attraction for many years to come. The Downtown Spokane Rotary Club 21 and the Spokane Parks Department worked together to make the fountain a reality. Financial support was also provided by numerous donors whose names appear around the fountain. Harold Balazs is the artist.

The fountain has 5 stainless steel columns that are 24 feet tall. These support a 30 foot diameter ring containing 40 overhead jets. The jets spray towards the middle of the fountain producing a dome of water and a waterfall in the fountain’s center. Eight geysers shoot water upwards. The fountain also has dozens of mist jets, and the 5 boulders have jets that spray sideways. To conserve water, the fountain water is filtered and recirculated.

You can catch the fountain in action from Spring to Fall, 6am to midnight.

Riverfront Park is a public park in downtown Spokane, Washington. The 100 acre park is located along the Spokane River, not far up from the Spokane Falls. It was created for Expo '74, a World's Fair event. The defining feature of the park is the Pavilion, which is marked by a 145-foot-tall (44 m) metal frame and wire shell that formed the US Pavilion tent during Expo '74. The park is well known for the Riverfront Park Carousel, as well as an IMAX theatre, Clock tower, skyride over the falls, a small amusement park for kids, a skating rink during the winter months, and the Spokane River Centennial Trail which passes through it. FOR THE CHILDREN

The rising hills, the slopes,

of statistics

lie before us.

the steep climb

of everything, going up,

up, as we all

go down.

In the next century

or the one beyond that,

they say,

are valleys, pastures,

we can meet there in peace

if we make it.

To climb these coming crests

one word to you, to

you and your children:

stay together

learn the flowers

go light

Another well-named room in the long-abandoned 3rd Bn 112th Armor HQ building in Brownwood, Texas. By the way, this is exactly the condition in which Rob Fuel and I found this room. You can see his take on this room here.

In civilian terms, an "Orderly Room" is roughly equivalent to a conference room; a place where members of the unit would get together to discuss official matters. Personally, I was amused by the fact that they had one room they called a "mess", and another they referred to as "orderly", and that after over half a century of neglect, they were still living up to their names!

Night, almost completely dark room, natural Maglite and natural LED flashlight.
