In the calling out to one another
Of the lovers up and down the strand
In the sound of the waves and the cries
Of the seagulls circling the sand
In the fragments of the songs
Carried down the wind from some radio
In the murmuring of the city in the distance
Ominous and low
I hear the sound of the world where we played
And the far too simple beauty
Of the promises we made
If you ever need holding
Call my name, I'll be there
If you ever need holding
And no holding back, I'll see you through
Sky, sky blue and black
Where the touch of the lover ends
And the soul of the friend begins
There's a need to be separate
and a need to be one
And a struggle neither wins
Where you gave me the world I was in
And a place I could make a stand
I could never see how you doubted me
When I'd let go of your hand
Yeah, and I was much younger then
And I must have thought that I would know
If things were going to end
And the heavens were rolling
Like a wheel on a track
And our sky was unfolding
And it'll never fold back
Sky blue and black
And I'd have fought the world for you
If I thought that you wanted me to
Or put aside what was true or untrue
If I'd known that's what you needed
What you needed me to do
But the moment has passed by me now
To have put away my pride
And just come through for you somehow
If you ever need holding
Call my name, I'll be there
If you ever need holding
And no holding back, I'll see you through
You're the color of the sky
Reflected in each store-front window pane
You're the whispering and the sighing
Of my tires in the rain
You're the hidden cost and
the thing that's lost
In everything I do
Yeah and I'll never stop looking for you
In the sunlight and the shadows
And the faces on the avenue
That's the way love is
That's the way love is
That's the way love is

I decided to have a New Year's Rant about litter! It seems to becoming more and more of a problem here from people with a couldn't care less attitude to casually tossing away anything they are carrying rather than putting it in a rubbish bin right up to those who recently drove a truckload of old carpets up to a local beauty spot one night, reversed into the woods and dumped the lot. The education system here pays no attention to this; indeed the most litter-filled place round here is a 500 yard radius around the local High School.
A few weeks ago we saw a large family having a picnic on the Cathedral Green in Wells with lots of styrofoam containers and coffee cups, chip packets, wine bottles and plastic glasses. When they'd finished eating and drinking they simply got up and walked off leaving everything where it lay. Every footpath round here is strewn with discarded soft drink bottles and plastic bags. This photo shows a soft drink bottle dumped on the ice covering a frozen field beside the river Brue on the edge of Glastonbury yesterday. Next to it is a supermarket trolley (see below) which is a long way from its home, the nearest Tesco supermarket being at least a mile away. There was even a supermarket trolley in the moat at the Bishop's Palace in Wells recently thanks no doubt to a group of Friday night feral youths.
Next time I go for a walk I'm going to have to carry a rubbish bag with me again and pick up some more of everybody else's mess! Thankfully my parents taught me to take these things home with me and to leave nature the way I'd like to find it. Sadly these days they would probably not have been allowed to teach me that sort of thing!
North of the city of Upland, CA, a few miles below the Mt. Baldy ski lift area is a popular hiking area known as Ice House Canyon. I went hiking there with a Flickr contact from Japan. We concentrated our photography on the 'silky water' technique on the little stream, cascades and pools that occur down the canyon.
Composition: I put the little cascade in the center of my composition here because it worked best. I used the tree on the left and the rock on the bottom as a framing elements. The light reflected off the water in the little pool acts as a leading line to take your attention to the little cascade.
This is a pool I wish I could have in my backyard.
It's not just the bears that get big in Alaska! This red squirrel weighs between 400-800 - grams that is. :-)
Thought that I would have a little fun with this one...
On our recent trip, we decided to take a jet boat ride out to the Knik Glacier. The Knik is one of the largest glaciers in SC AK, 28 mi long and 5 mi across. We had never visited there yet, so thought we would see it this year.
While we were there at the glacial camp, we could see a bear WAY up on a distance mountain, foraging on the vegetation. Other than that, we didn't really see too much, as we sat around and shared stories with our fellow tour passengers. They gave us hot chocolate and trail mix, which was really nice since it really was a cold and dreary afternoon.
At one point, as we sat at the camp, we heard a thunder, which could only mean one thing.... calving of the glacier. We all ran to see it. An iceberg split in half and revealed itself to us - the most beautiful color of blue ever (will share that photo on a later post). As we retreated to the camp area, we noticed that a thief had been in our area. It was our little red squirrel, who was none too shy and would allow me to get as close as I wanted to him.
I have to admit, when I looked at those beady eyes and his quick movements, I was a bit scared being all in it's face. LOL
Sometimes when visiting a state known for it's wildlife, you learn to take what you get, and so, I share this one with you all. But honestly, on our way to the tour headquarters cabin, we did see several moose crossing the road and numerous birds soaring overhead.
Thanks so much for your views and your comments!
Happy Hump Day!

Sometimes you'll hear someone called a "Renaissance man." That means he's a man of many interests, gifts and pursuits - skilled in many areas. If there is such a thing as a "Renaissance boy," I think our five-year-old grandson might be one. He's interested in so many things - and actually, he's good in a lot of them. To round out the other areas of his life, he recently got involved in a soccer league for kids his age. Which makes his mother a "soccer mom," I guess. Which means everybody wants her vote. Right? Well, our grandson didn't have the benefit of having an older sibling to learn from as some other members of his little team did. The soccer learning curve for him was a little steep, but he's been doing well. But something really special happened in one of the last games of the season. The team's two little stars came late - players who the others tend to lean on. But they weren't there to lean on. Now it was clearly up to kids who were usually in the shadow of those stars. Well, our favorite soccer player really stepped up. Suddenly, he was more focused, more aggressive than he'd been all season - and right away he scored two goals for his team, and they won that night.
guess our grandson looked around and said, "Well, if it is to be, it's up to me!" And suddenly he stepped up to make a difference like he'd never made before. It may be that time in the game for you right now - time to step up and really make a difference.
You've got a great example to follow in our word for today from the Word of God in 1 Samuel 17, beginning with verse 23. The Israelis and Philistines are lined up facing one another on opposite sides of a valley. Every day the Philistine giant comes out and he challenges the Israelites to send out a man to fight him, with the people of the loser serving the people of the winner from that day on. Young David, the youngest brother in his family, arrives to bring food to his warrior brothers just as Goliath is coming out to issue his challenge for the fortieth day in a row.
The Bible says, "Goliath ... shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it. When the Israelites saw the man, they all ran from him in great fear ... David said to Saul, 'Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.'" None of the big varsity players in their nice uniforms will get in the game - so the kid does, with just a slingshot. He doesn't have the training the others do, he doesn't have the experience, he doesn't have the weapons, but he's willing to step up because he believes, as he tells Goliath, "The battle is the Lord's." And Goliath went down because an unlikely, seemingly unqualified, hero stepped up.
This is a time when the Goliaths of hell are holding the field all around us. Not because the darkness is so strong, but because no one will step up and fight the battles. Right now God is summoning you, as unlikely and unqualified as you may feel, to get out of the shadows and onto the front lines. Someone has to take that assignment no one else is rising to. Someone needs to step up and change the atmosphere in your church, or in your school, or in your home, or where you work. Someone has to fight for your marriage. Someone has to be the one to confront what's wrong, to bring people together, to lead a prayer effort, to talk about Jesus.
In Isaiah's day when God asked, "Who will go for us?" Isaiah answered, "Here am I, send me" (Isaiah 6:8). Maybe you've been holding back saying, "Here am I, send him." But God is summoning you to step up for this one - like our grandson on that soccer field, making a greater difference than he'd ever made before because he knew it was up to him this time! And this assignment from God is up to you - even if there are defiant giants standing in the way. It's your time to shine, and you will, because the battle is the Lord's!

Back in November 2012 I finally saw Madama Butterfly, my all time favourite opera, live. There were evidently a few in the audience who had never seen it or even know of the story - during the applause for the performers, the singer who had the role of B.F. Pinkerton was heckled. In jest, ofcourse.
Then I got to thinking why it is that I like this opera so much. Why do I gravitate towards heart shattering "love" stories where the heroine almost invariably dies (mortally or spiritually) for a man who, on reflection, can more or less be described as the embodiment of fluff... read: Swan Lake (my favourite ballet), The Little Mermaid (the original Hans Christian Andersen story that i first read as a child, not the Disney-ised crap).... Is it because in mortal or spiritual death I can believe that the purity of these heroines' love is preserved?
B.F. Pinkerton offered Cio Cio San nothing but a fog of unreal romance - petals, bubbles, rainbows, glitter... promises of forever, undying love, integrity, songs, poetry... beautiful but fleeting and ultimately insincere.
Why do lesser men, with sweet tongues but with false hearts, attract such extreme devotion and sacrifice? Lately I've been wishing that Cio Cio San had a chance to exact vengeance on Pinkerton...
You took my heart and you held it in your mouth
And, with a word all my love came rushing out
And, every whisper, it's the worst, emptied out by a single word
There is a hollow in me now
So I put my faith in something unknown
I'm living on such sweet nothing
But I'm trying to hope with nothing to hold
I'm living on such sweet nothing
And it's hard to learn
And it's hard to love
When you're giving me such sweet nothing
Sweet nothing, sweet nothing
You're giving me such sweet nothing
It isn't easy for me to let it go
Cause
I've swallowed every single word
And
Every whisper, every sigh
Eats away at this heart of mine
And there is a hollow in me now
So I put my faith in something unknown
I'm living on such sweet nothing
But I'm trying to hope with nothing to hold
I'm living on such sweet nothing
And it's hard to learn
And it's hard to love
When you're giving me such sweet nothing
Sweet nothing, sweet nothing
You're giving me such sweet nothing
And it's not enough
To tell me that you care
When, we both know the words are empty air
You give me nothing
On the occasion of the Greek Monarch's 70th birthday, Taki's Magazine found the most charming words on the King of the Hellenes.
"The Greek royal family had to endure endless vilifications while political hacks led the nation to the ruin of today. Greek politicians fear the King and they fear monarchy even more. Presidents can be appointed and expected to pay back, Kings are not and do not. ...
"And it gets worse. Vilification aside, the Greek royal family’s lands were confiscated—lands that had been bought by the family in the early 19th century and not handed to them by a grateful nation - and after judicial review in the highest court of Europe, appraised at one hundredth of their value. The Greek King gave the funds to a Greek charity and has never complained. The fact that the Greek King and his family have always acted impeccably when the nation has been in danger does not seem to matter. Envy is a Greek trait, and the envious among them cheered at the unfairness of it all. Basically, the Greek left never forgave the present King’s father and mother for fighting against the communist guerrillas who tried to take power through force of arms back in the Forties. Greek journalists are, like everywhere, men and women of the left. Punto basta, as they say in the land of pasta.
"Which brings me to the present. The King is now planning to move to Greece and last week he celebrated his 70th birthday. His son, Prince Pavlos and his wife, Princess Marie-Chantal, threw a wonderful dinner to celebrate it. ...
"Who else was there? I’ve already done all the name dropping I will ever do, but it’s not every day that a King turns 70 and does it in such style. Bob and Chantal Miller, the Carringtons, the Bismarcks, the Frosts, the Hoares, many Greeks, and little ole me. Afterwards I had a drink with Prince Nikolaos of Greece and as I walked back home I thought what a sign of affection for the Greek King Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the royals showed towards a very nice man who has always deserved better."
The photo shows Their Majesties arriving at the Danish Queen's 70th birthday on 13th April 2010 at Christiansborg Palace.
The European Peacock (Nymphalis io), more commonly known simply as the Peacock butterfly, is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe and Asia. It is the only member of the subgenus Inachis, which is included in Nymphalis genus. The name is derived from Greek mythology, meaning Io, [the daughter] of Inachus.

The Alabama Theatre was constructed between April and December, 1927 on 3rd Avenue North in Birmingham, Alabama for Paramount's Publix Theater division. The first feature, shown the day after the Christmas 1927 grand opening, was "The Spotlight" starring Esther Rawlson and Neil Hamilton.
This view from 18th Street at the alley between 2nd and 3rd avenues, shows the steel frame being erected in late spring or summer. It was made by commercial photographer A. C. Keily, whose studio was located at 404 1-2 N. 20th St. a few blocks away.
Signs visible in the lower left of this view include the marquee of the Lyric Theatre, a construction sign reading "Steel Erection by Jas. H. Elkins Const. Co, Birmingham, Ala." Another construction sign for "H. W. Peerson Drilling Co. ("Wells drilled. Any size, Any Depth, Any Where"), and a sign on the 2-story building for the Baltimore Medical Institute, above a storefront for "... Silverfield & Son".
This print is mounted on linen with Keily's label affixed to the leading edge.
Currently this is one of my favorite shot, for the (her) beauty, for the use of light, for the treatment and post-production.
It reminds me a lot of the album "Adore" by The Smashing Pumpkins (...yeah, i'm a bit obsessed by this band...).

About the shot
The squirrel monkey is housed in Edinburgh Zoo's Living Links Centre, a dimly-lit building which is ideal for the monkeys but challenging for any photographer. As with all monkeys, these would not stay still long enough most of the time for a decent shot. This is what makes them so endearing; the jumping and the swinging and the coming up to the glass to look at the strange humans. A lot of my shots were a blur of frenzied activity as they played around, the young ones in particular. Occasionally, there were some lovely obliging models like this mum and baby.
About the Squirrel Monkey
The squirrel monkeys are the New World monkeys of the genus Saimiri. They are the only genus in the subfamily Saimirinae. Squirrel monkey fur is short and close, colored olive at the shoulders and yellowish orange on its back and extremities. Their throat and the ears are white and their mouths are black. The upper part of their head is hairy. This black and white face gives them their German name, "skull monkeys".
Squirrel monkeys grow to 25 to 35 cm, plus a 35 to 42 cm tail. They weigh 750 to 1100g. Remarkably, the brain mass to body mass ratio for squirrel monkeys is 1:17, which gives them the largest brain, proportionately, of all the primates. Monkeys are the closest animals to humans.Humans have a 1:35 ratio.
Female squirrel monkeys have a pseudo-penis that they use to display dominance over smaller monkeys, much like the way the male squirrel monkeys display their dominance.
They live together in multi-male/multi-female groups with up to 500 members. These large groups can, however, occasionally break into smaller troops. They have a number of vocal calls, including warning sounds to protect themselves from large falcons, which are a natural threat to them. Their small body size also makes them susceptible to predators such as snakes and felids. For marking territory, squirrel monkeys rub their tail and their skin with their own urine. Squirrel monkeys are omnivores, eating primarily fruits and insects. Occasionally they also eat nuts, buds, eggs and small vertebrates.
The Common Squirrel Monkey S. sciureus is captured for the pet trade and for medical research but it is not endangered. Three squirrel monkey species are in danger of extinction. S. o. oerstedti is listed as endangered, S. o. citrinellus is listed as critically endangered and S. vanzolinii is listed as Vulnerable.

Lumbier, Navarra (Spain).
ENGLISH
The Foz de Lumbier is carved out of the limestone rock by the river Irati at the western end of the Leyre range of mountains, at the foot of the Navarrese Pyrenees. It is one of the most spectacular gorges in Navarre, a landscape created over millions of years by the waters of the river Irati, which have left their mark on this sanctuary of nature day by day. The gorge was declared a Nature Reserve in 1987.
Lumbier is a narrow and small gorge, just 1,300 metres long, but of spectacular beauty. Its vertical walls reach a maximum height of 150 metres and large birds of prey live in the cracks and ledges, with species such as griffon vultures whose flights will accompany you in your visit to the gorge. It is also a refuge for foxes, boar, badgers and owls, and is strewn with gall and kermes oaks and bushes such as thyme, lavender and gorse that hang from the cracks, vegetation that is transformed into woods of poplars, willows and ash trees at the entry and exit of the gorge.
In contrast to many other canyons, you can walk through Lumbier along an easy track that runs along the bottom of the cliffs for 2.6 kilometres. The route was created for the old Irati train (the first electric train in Spain) that linked Pamplona with Sangüesa between 1911 and 1955.
The signposted path runs along the river and crosses the rock through two tunnels (206 and 160 metres long) that do not have artificial light. Towards the end of the path the route goes around the rock and reaches the remains of the Puente del Diablo (Devil's Bridge), which was built in the 16th century with a raised arch 15 metres above the river. It was destroyed by the French in 1812 during the War of Independence, and owes its name to a legend that says that its builder asked the devil for help to finish it.

CASTELLANO

Umaid Bhavan Palace ( View it, Large On Black) was built with superficial intentions of providing employment to famine stricken farmers. The Palace now is a five star deluxe palace hotel. The museum of the palace is highly recommended for its display of weapons, an array of stuffed leopards, a huge banner presented by Queen Victoria and an incredible collection of clocks.
Maharaja Umaid Singhji who built this palace was fascinated with western lifestyles so he marshalled the services of a well-known Edwardian architect, Henry Vaughan Lanchester, a creditable equal of Edward Lutyens (architect of New Delhi) to construct a three hundred and forty seven roomed Umaid Palace.
This was to become India last of the great palaces and the biggest private residence in the world.

The other day, after an all-night rain, I found my flowering maple (not flowering now) with rain drops on the leaves underside. That is kind of unusual but then maple leaves turn in all directions... everything is possible. =) I found it pretty. This image is untouched--it is as it came out of the camera. I used Lightroom 3 to convert from raw to tiff, I added my logos and watermark in CS5. Otherwise not a thing done.
Photo details: custom white balance, Canon 5D Mark II, Canon EF 100mm f/28.8 IS macro, 1/100 sec at f.5.0 with ISO 100. I used a +1/3 EV to get more light and move the image more toward the right side--much green and in the RGB curve the colors come live if on the right of the histogram's middle.

The main parish church of Santa María de los Reales Alcázares displays the most significant mixture of architectural styles, to be found in the city. The buildings historic and artistic patronage is complex and its solid external appearance is of a defensive fortification.
Built on an archaeological site where remains of bronze and Roman civilisations have been found, the Church rests of the foundations of the main mosque of Muslim Úbeda. According to tradition the Romans built a temple here dedicated to Diane. After the conquest of the town by Ferdinand II the Saint, in 1223, the Mosque was consecrated in the Catholic faith with the title High Parish Church of the Royal Alcazares and of Our Lady of the Ascension. In 1259 it achieved the rank of High Collegiate Church. In 1852 the Church's collegiate rank was withdrawn, reversing to the rank of High Parish Church. Being the principal temple of the city, it has preserved important archives and a multitude of treasures. The latter being donations and numerous priviledges bestowed by Popes, Kings and bishops.
Its external appearance blends Medieval and Classicist styles. Being built on to the ols walls of the fortress, Santa María church has been the main witness to the great changes and strife of Úbeda. Today it still offers a special attraction to the town which is due to its great historical character and the population's identification with its heritage.

Yesterday, I went back to the nesting spot and I have to tell you I have good luck..As soon as I got there they were changing "shift" They don't waste time..In out and that's that. (I like that) I watched the head popping in and out for quite sometime..too long...actually. I decided to pack it in.........Of course as soon as I looked the other way one flew back & they changed shift again..I missed a great shot of the two parents completely out of the nest..just for a few moments.(figures right?) I have been wanting to catch the two of them "chatting" together outside the nest..for days now lol...I watched as one flew off and the other took over the nest ;) Anyway, here's the shot I got of the two happy parents. They don't waste time either..
"Northern Flickers are large, brown woodpeckers with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. On walks, don’t be surprised if you scare one up from the ground. It’s not where you’d expect to find a woodpecker, but flickers eat mainly ants and beetles, digging for them with their unusual, slightly curved bill. When they fly you’ll see a flash of color in the wings – yellow if you’re in the East, red if you’re in the West – and a bright white flash on the rump".
"It takes about 1 to 2 weeks to build the nest which is built by both sexes of the mating pairs. The entrance hole is roughly 5 cm to 10 cm wide."
"Northern Flicker feeding juvenile at nest cavity entrance. A typical clutch consists of 6 to 8 eggs whose shells are pure white with a smooth surface and high gloss. The eggs are the second largest of the North American woodpecker species, exceeded only by the Pileated Woodpecker's. Incubation is by both sexes for approximately 11 to 12 days. The young are fed by regurgitation and fledge about 25 to 28 days after hatching."
Enjoy! Best viewed LARGE..Have a great long weekend to all my Canadian flickr friends ;)

Update 14/06/2011:
Apparently, this photo is subject to some discussion at the urbanexplorersforum.nl forum.
I have no access, so I'm not sure what it's all about. I did receive a polite message from a person that probably is a forum member, with the suggestion to remove the address of this mansion from the page:
Translated:
"How you deal with your info is your own right. However, to post the 'maison Viron' mansion's address on Flickr is not so convenient. It is a known place visited by a certain group of photographers, which don't like this information to be freely available on the net. It also attracts other people, such as furniture thieves, etc. There are quite a few interior photos that are online.
So it would be nice to remove it."
My reply simply stated that any information provided on this photo page is already freely available on the net. I do not add any information not yet publicly available.
I would also like to get a chance to read what that forum discussion is all about, and express my opinion. If there are any good arguments, I'm willing to comply to the request. But I doubt there will be. Can anyone help me to register on urbanexplorersforum.nl ? I was unable to find a register page.

Update 28/06/2011:
A bit late with posting this update :-)
The reply I got on my email (that same day), goes like this:
Translated:
"But did you get permission from the owners of the webpages that you provide a link to? According to me they don't give permission. In fact, I know for sure, I know some of them personally."
I can only repeat what I have said before: I provide what's already available on the internet.
If the 'owners' of the webpages I link to would ask if I'd remove the links, I will. If they can prove they are the owners, of course.
"You won't get access to the forum because it's an urbexforum. Anyone that exercises this hobby for a while and can show the necessary results is accepted, any others are resolutely denied in order to prevent such practices."
I don't get this. I am denied access to this forum because I'm not an 'urbex'. So far, I can follow. But how is not allowing me on the forum going to prevent me from posting the information that I have? If they would grant me access, they might convince me to remove that information.
"I repeat, you can do what you want with the info on Viron. That it is already freely available on the internet does not mean you should contribute on its availability. FYI, it was I who started the thread on that forum to keep each other sharp on who handles info in a good way or bad."
I guess I'll be one of the bad guys, then. If I don't get a chance to defend myself, or give 'them' a chance to convince me to follow their rules, so be it.
"Here ends all contact between you and me...."
Well, OK, then. That's very mature.
Even if I wasn't allowed on that forum, at least I had one contact to exchange ideas with. But if this person chooses to end a discussion that hasn't had a chance to really start, I'll respect that. I haven't answered that mail. And because all contact has ended, I doubt that person will come back to read my thoughts in here.

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps project has been a neighborhood effort to create a beautiful mosaic running up the risers of the 163 steps located at 16th and Moraga in San Francisco.
Artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher led the creation of the 163 mosaic panels that were applied to the step risers, over 300 neighbors joined us in making them, and over 220 neighbors sponsored handmade animal, bird and fish name tiles imbedded within the mosaic. The City permitting process was completed on August 18, 2004. KZ Tile, a major San Francisco tile setting company, generously agreed to set the mosaic panels into the risers and tile the step treads with rough, nonslip tile.

The territory of the Siberian Lynx covers Scandinavia, Russia, Asia Minor, Iran, Iraq, and Western Europe. Reintroductions taking place in Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Yugoslavia.
Siberian lynx can be found in forests, mixed woodlands and other such areas where there is heavy undergrowth for cover. These predators usually hunt at night, but severe weather occasionally forces them to become daytime hunters. They are fond of rabbits and hares, which form the major part of their diet, but they also eat rodents, birds, deer and sheep.
The Siberian lynx is still found widely throughout northern and central Asia, but it is rapidly losing its territory in Siberia. It still ranges from Estonia to Siberia, but its northern boundary has shifted more than 250 miles north due to human settlement. It is becoming more isolated in remnant habitats in central and southwestern Russia, with reports that is gone from Moldavia and most of the Ukraine.
These beautiful creatures are being killed by hunters for their pelts and by sheep farmers. In Europe, where governments once paid bounties to eliminate the lynx, they have been re-introduced with mixed results. The re-introductions have been somewhat successful in Austria, Yugoslavia, Germany and Italy, using mostly animals live-trapped in Czechoslovakia. As a result, these long-legged, ruff-cheeked cats are gradually returning to Switzerland's Jura Mountains.

The Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis) is a pine native to the Mediterranean region. The range extends from Morocco and Spain north to southern France, Italy and Croatia, and east to Greece and northern Libya, with an outlying population (from which it was first described) in Syria (including Aleppo), Jordan and Israel. It is generally found at low altitudes, mostly from sea level to 200 m, but can grow at an altitude of up to 1000 m in southern Spain, and up to 1700 m in the south, in Morocco and Algeria.
A cone (in formal botanical usage: strobilus, plural strobili) is an organ on plants in the division Pinophyta (conifers) that contains the reproductive structures. The familiar woody cone is the female cone, which produces seeds. The male cones, which produce pollen, are usually herbaceous and much less conspicuous even at full maturity. The name "cone" derives from the fact that the shape in some species resembles a geometric cone. The individual plates of a cone are known as scales.
The male cone (microstrobilus or pollen cone) is structurally similar across all conifers, differing only in small ways (mostly in scale arrangement) from species to species. Extending out from a central axis are microsporophylls (modified leaves). Under each microsporophyll is one or several microsporangia (pollen sacs). The photo (right) shows mature male pine cones shortly after pollen release.
The female cone (megastrobilus, seed cone, or ovulate cone) contains ovules within which, when fertilized by pollen, become seeds. The female cone structure varies more markedly between the different conifer families, and is often crucial for the identification of many species of conifers, in as much as seeing the foliage alone may be insufficient to differentiate between closely related species.

CASTELLANO

Following, a text, in english, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or "Fountain of the Four Rivers" is a fountain in Rome, Italy, located in the Piazza Navona. Designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini, it is emblematic of the dynamic and dramatic effects sought by High Baroque artists. It was erected in 1651 in front of the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, and yards from the Pamphilj Palace belonging to this fountain's patron, Innocent X (1644-1655).
The four gods on the corners of the fountain represent the four major rivers of the world known at the time: the Nile, Danube, Ganges, and Plate. The design of each god figure has symbolic importance.
Design
Bernini's design was selected in competition. The circumstances of his victory are described as follows:
So strong was the sinister influence of the rivals of Bernini on the mind of Innocent that when he planned to set up in Piazza Navona the great obelisk brought to Rome by the Emperor Caracalla, which had been buried for a long time at Capo di Bove for the adornment of a magnificent fountain, the Pope had designs made by the leading architects of Rome without an order for one to Bernini. Prince Niccolò Ludovisi, whose wife was niece to the pope, persuaded Bernini to prepare a model, and arrange for it to be secretly installed in a room in the Palazzo Pamphili that the Pope had to pass. When the meal was finished, seeing such a noble creation, he stopped almost in ecstasy. Being prince of the keenest judgment and the loftiest ideas, after admiring it, said: “This is a trick … It will be necessary to employ Bernini in spite of those who do not wish it, for he who desires not to use Bernini’s designs, must take care not to see them.”
Paraphrase from Filippo Baldinucci, The life of Cavaliere Bernini (1682)
Public fountains in Rome served multiple purposes: first, they were highly needed sources of water for neighbors in the centuries prior to home plumbing. Second, they were monuments to the papal patrons. Earlier Bernini fountains had been the Fountain of the Triton in Piazza Barberini, the fountain of the Moor in the southern end of Piazza Navona erected during the Barberini papacy, and the Neptune and Triton for Villa Montalto, whose statuary now resides at Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Each has animals and plants that further carry forth the identification, and each carries a certain number of allegories and metaphors with it. The Ganges carries a long oar, representing the river's navigability. The Nile's head is draped with a loose piece of cloth, meaning that no one at that time knew exactly where the Nile's source was. The Danube touches the Papal coat of arms, since it is the large river closest to Rome. And the Río de la Plata is sitting on a pile of coins, a symbol of the riches America could offer to Europe (the word plata means silver in Spanish). Also, the Río de la Plata looks scared by a snake, showing rich men's fear that their money could be stolen. Each is a river god, semi-prostrate, in awe of the central tower, epitomized by the slender Egyptian obelisk (built for the Roman Serapeum in AD 81), symbolizing by Papal power surmounted by the Pamphili symbol (dove). In addition, the fountain is a theater in the round, a spectacle of action, that can be strolled around. Water flows and splashes from a jagged and pierced mountainous disorder of travertine marble. A legend, common with tour-guides, is that Bernini positioned the cowering Rio de la Plata River as if the sculpture was fearing the facade of the church of Sant'Agnese by his rival Borromini could crumble against him; in fact, the fountain was completed several years before Borromini began work on the church.
The dynamic fusion of architecture and sculpture made this fountain revolutionary when compared to prior Roman projects, such as the stilted designs Acqua Felice and Paola by Fontana in Piazza San Bernardo (1585-87) or the customary embellished geometric floral-shaped basin below a jet of water such as the Fontanina in Piazza Campitelli (1589) by Giacomo della Porta.
Unveiling
he Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi was unveiled to the populace of Rome on 12 June 1651. According to a report from the time, an event was organised to draw people to the Piazza Navona. Beforehand, wooden scaffolding, overlaid with curtains, had hidden the fountain, though probably not the obelisk, which would have given people an idea that something was being built, but the precise details were unknown. Once unveiled, the full majesty of the fountain would be apparent, which the celebrations were designed to advertise. The festival was paid for by the Pamphili family, to be specific, Innocent X, who had sponsored the erection of the fountain. The most conspicuous item on the Pamphili crest, an olive branch, was brandished by the performers who took part in the event.
The author of the report, Antonio Bernal, takes his readers through the hours leading up to the unveiling. The celebrations were announced by a woman, dressed as the allegorical character of Fame, being paraded around the streets of Rome on a carriage or float. She was sumptuously dressed, with wings attached to her back and a long trumpet in her hand. Bernal notes that "she went gracefully through all the streets and all the districts that are found among the seven hills of Rome, often blowing the round bronze [the trumpet], and urging everyone to make their way to that famous Piazza." A second carriage followed her; this time another woman was dressed as the allegorical figure of Curiosity. According to the report, she continued exhorting the people to go towards the piazza. Bernal describes the clamour and noise of the people as they discussed the upcoming event.
The report is actually less detailed about the process of publicly unveiling the fountain. However, it does give ample descriptions of the responses of the spectators who had gathered in the Piazza. Once there, Bernal notes, the citizens of the city were overwhelmed by the massive fountain, with its huge life-like figures. The report mentions the "enraptured souls" of the population, the fountain, which "gushes out a wealth of silvery treasures" causing "no little wonder" in the onlookers. Bernal then continues to describe the fountain, making continuous reference to the seeming naturalism of the figures and its astonishing effect on those in the piazza.
The making of the fountain was met by opposition by the people of Rome for several reasons. First, Innocent X had the fountain built at public expense during the intense famine of 1646-48. Throughout the construction of the fountain, the city murmurred and talk of riot was in the air. Pasquinade writers protested the construction of the fountain in September 1648 by attaching hand-written invectives on the stone blocks used to make the obelisk. These pasquinades read, "We do not want Obelisks and Fountains, It is bread that we want. Bread, Bread, Bread!" Innocent quickly had the authors arrested, and disguised spies patrol the Pasquino statue and Piazza Navona
The streetvendors of the market also opposed the construction of the fountain, as Innocent X expelled them from the piazza. The Pamphilij pope believed they detracted from the magnificence of the square. The vendors refused to move, and the papal police had to chase them from the piazza. Roman Jews, in particular, lamented the closing of the Navona, since they were allowed to sell used articles of clothing there at the Wednesday market.
Navona Square (Piazza Navona).
Following, a text, in english, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Piazza Navona is a city square in Rome, Italy. It is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, built in first century AD, and follows the form of the open space of the stadium.[1] The ancient Romans came there to watch the agones ("games"), and hence it was known as 'Circus Agonalis' (competition arena). It is believed that over time the name changed to 'in agone' to 'navone' and eventually to 'navona'.
Defined as a public space in the last years of 15th century, when the city market was transferred to it from the Campidoglio, the Piazza Navona is a significant example of Baroque Roman architecture and art. It features sculptural and architectural creations: in the center stands the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or Fountain of the Four Rivers (1651) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini; the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone by Francesco Borromini and Girolamo Rainaldi; and the Pamphilj palace also by Rainaldi and which features the gallery frescoed by Pietro da Cortona.
The Piazza Navona has two additional fountains: at the southern end is the Fontana del Moro with a basin and four Tritons sculpted by Giacomo della Porta (1575) to which, in 1673, Bernini added a statue of a Moor, or African, wrestling with a dolphin, and at the northern end is the Fountain of Neptune (1574) created by Giacomo della Porta. The statue of Neptune in the northern fountain, the work of Antonio Della Bitta, was added in 1878 to make that fountain more symmetrical with La Fontana del Moro in the south.
At the southwest end of the piazza is the ancient 'speaking' statue of Pasquino. Erected in 1501, Romans could leave lampoons or derogatory social commentary attached to the statue.
During its history, the piazza has hosted theatrical events and other ephemeral activities. From 1652 until 1866, when the festival was suppressed, it was flooded on every Saturday and Sunday in August in elaborate celebrations of the Pamphilj family. The pavement level was raised in the 19th century and the market was moved again in 1869 to the nearby Campo de' Fiori. A Christmas market is held in the piazza.

Literature and films
The piazza is featured in Dan Brown's 2000 thriller Angels and Demons, in which the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi "The Fountain of the four rivers"(the Danube, the Gange, the Nile and the River Plate) is listed as one of the Altars of Science. During June 2008, Ron Howard directed several scenes of the film adaptation of Angels and Demons on the southern section of the Piazza Navona, featuring Tom Hanks.
The piazza is featured in several scenes of director Mike Nichols' 1970 adaptation of Joseph Heller's novel, Catch-22.
The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi was used in the 1990 film Coins in the Fountain. The characters threw coins into the fountain as they made wishes. The Trevi Fountain was used in the 1954 version of the film.

Best prank ever: Stopping time at Grand Central Station
Grand Central Terminal
Grand Central Terminal is one of two monumental gateways that were built in New York in the heyday of railway transportation.
Grand Central TerminalThe monumental railway station was constructed in 1903-1913 for the New York and Harlem Railroad company. It is a grand Beaux-Arts building which serves as a transportation hub connecting train, metro, car and pedestrian traffic in an efficient way. It has 67 train tracks on two different levels.
As you approach 42nd Street and Park Avenue from downtown, you'll be facing this triumphant facade featuring a fifty foot pediment with statues of Hercules, Minerva and Mercury surrounding a thirteen foot clock. This was designed by architect Whitney Warren in 1913.
The interior of Grand Central is also an amazing sight and will transport you to another time. The Main Concourse seen here is an immense space 120 feet wide, 375 feet long and 125 feet high.
Penn Station
The other, even grander railway station - the Penn Station - was built in 1902-1911 after a design by Charles McKim. In an act of vandalism, the monumental landmark was destroyed in 1963-1966 and replaced by a banal railway station and office tower. The Grand Central Terminal almost suffered a similar fate but thanks to New York City's new landmark preservation laws, the building was able to escape the wrecking ball.
