This “Life Cycle of Phoenix” is not simply about life and death but it’s about reviving. My dear friend Ikie; the body painter, said that whenever he draws on one’s body, he draws with all his heart and loads in a wish, each and every time he moves his brush.

I asked him what he has wished when he was drawing Phenix, and he replied, “The strength to revive, again and again”….

I feel very lucky and honored to have had a chance to work with Ikie, his Morphacio Bodypainting team, his lovable family, Ceasar Marco; the charming and talented photographer, Mariana; the beautiful MUA, and all the people (now my friends <3 ) who were involved in this project.

Our life is very much like Phoenix. We go through ups and downs, and everytime we ‘revive’, we get a little stronger. I am not such a great model, but I secretly wish that Ikie’s wish have reached (or is reaching) someone through this picture. “The strength to revive, again and again”.. =))

i'm clearly phoning this one in.

i wanted to play again in Musically Challenged. but i've hardly time to take any photos to pair with songs right now.

instead i sifted through the lyrics of the ten weekly songs and then i dug, dug, dug through the photos i've taken in the past several weeks, looking for a hit. however, nothing stood out to me, nothing was that well suited. no cobblestone streets or a halo streetlamp that scream 'Sound of Silence'. (or whisper, as the case may be)

so i leave you, once again, with further proof that my predilection towards the pacific ocean and kid reflections is alive and well.

it's got this funky but tranquil thing going. not something i'd normally gravitate to, but glad i had a listen. plus it's got three Best Things Ever in it: a British singer, Kanye West, and Adidas shell toes.

THE WATTS TOWERS

"The Watts Towers, consisting of seventeen major sculptures constructed of structural steel and covered with mortar, are the work of one man - Simon Rodia. Rodia, born Sabato Rodia in Ribottoli, Italy in 1879, was known by a variety of names including Don Simon, Simon Rodilla, Sam and Simon. Although his neighbors in Watts knew him as "Sam Rodilla", the official name of his work is "the Watts Towers of Simon Rodia".

Rodia's older brother immigrated to the United States in 1895 and settled in Pennsylvania where he worked in the coal mines. Rodia followed his brother a few years later. Little is known about his early life in the United States except that he moved to the west coast and found work in rock quarries and logging and railroad camps as a construction worker.

In 1921, Rodia purchased the triangular-shaped lot at 1761-1765 107th Street in Los Angeles and began to construct his masterpiece, which he called "Nuestro Pueblo" (meaning "our town"). For 34 years, Rodia worked single-handedly to build his towers without benefit of machine equipment, scaffolding, bolts, rivets, welds or drawing board designs. Besides his own ingenuity, he used simple tools, pipe fitter pliers and a window-washer's belt and buckle.

Construction worker by day and artist by night, Rodia adorned his towers with a diverse mosaic of broken glass, sea shells, generic pottery and tile, a rare piece of 19th-century, hand painted Canton ware and many pieces of 20th-century American ceramics. Rodia once said, "I had it in mind to do something big and I did it." The tallest of his towers stands 99½ feet and contains the longest slender reinforced concrete column in the world. The monument also features a gazebo with a circular bench, three bird baths, a center column and a spire reaching a height of 38 feet. Rodia's "ship of Marco Polo" has a spire of 28 feet, and the 140-foot long "south wall" is decorated extensively with tiles, sea shells, pottery, glass and hand-drawn designs.

In 1955, when Rodia was approaching 75, he deeded his property to a neighbor and retired to Martinez, California to be near his family. A fire ruined Rodia's little house in 1956. Within a few years the Department of Building and Safety ordered the property demolished. A group of concerned citizens, calling themselves "The Committee for Simon Rodia's Towers in Watts", fought successfully to save the Towers by collecting signatures and money and devising an engineering test in 1959 that proved the Towers' strength and safety.

In 1975, the committee, which had persevered the unique work of art for 16 years, gave the 'Towers and adjoining Arts Center building to the City of Los Angeles for operation and maintenance. In 1978, the Towers were deeded to the State, which undertook extensive restoration of the three main towers. . In 1985, continuing restoration responsibilities were given to the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department and currently both the Towers and the Watts Towers Arts Center are under the operation of the Cultural Affairs Department.

While the Towers fall into no strict art category, international authorities and the general public alike have lauded them as a unique monument to the human spirit and the persistence of a singular vision. The Watts Towers, listed on the National Register of Historic Places are a National Historic Landmark, a State of California Historic Park and Historic-Cultural Monument No. 15, as designated by the City of Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission."

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is a species of lizard that inhabits the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Gili Dasami, in central Indonesia. A member of the monitor lizard family (Varanidae), it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to an average length of 2–3 meters (approximately 6.5–10 ft) and weighing around 70 kilograms (154 lb). Their unusual size is attributed to island gigantism, since there are no other carnivorous mammals to fill the niche on the islands where they live, and also to the Komodo dragon's low metabolic rate. As a result of their size, these lizards are apex predators, dominating the ecosystems in which they live. Although Komodo dragons eat mostly carrion, they will also hunt and ambush prey including invertebrates, birds, and mammals.

Komodo dragons possess virulent bacteria in their saliva, of which more than 28 Gram-negative and 29 Gram-positive strains have been isolated. These bacteria cause septicemia in their victim; if an initial bite does not kill the prey animal and it escapes, it will commonly succumb within a week to the resulting infection. The deadliest bacteria in Komodo dragon saliva appears to be a very deadly strain of Pasteurella multocida, from studies performed with lab mice. Because the Komodo dragon appears immune to its own microbes, much research has been done searching for the antibacterial molecule in the hopes of human medicinal use.

CASTELLANO

abandoned 28 years marmora mines rock crusher room

The Marmora Mine

Marmora is located between the towns of Madoc and Havelock along highway 7 in Hastings County. The name Marmora is taken from the latin word for "marble".

The area was known for its rich iron content and mining operations began as early as the 1820's to extract and smelt this mineral. Today you will find the remains of the water-powered refinery along the eastern bank of the Crowe River while the northern bank of the Crowe held the richest ore deposits.

At its prime, the area was home to as many as two dozen mines. Perhaps the most successful of the mines was that of the Marmoraton which opened in 1955. The Marmoraton was owned by Bethlehem Steel Mills of New York and exported iron ore pellets.

In 1953, before the Marmoraton could open, engineers first had to blast through 120 feet of limestone before reaching the high grade ore which was underneath. One blasted out, the open pit mine measured approximately 1700 feet by 1200 feet and reached 600 feet deep.

The mine employed some 300 men who worked to fill the 30 to 35 railway cars daily for transport south to Picton port where it was loaded into boats. The mine produced 520,000 tons of pellets anually.

When the mine closed in 1979, it had mined almost 1.3 million tons of iron ore. Over time, underground streams and rainfall have slowly filled two thirds of the mine with water. So much so that it is now officially classified as a lake.

A view of the Île de la cité of Paris at dusk, from the North-West.

This picture tells a large part of the history of Paris. The cité is where Paris started, even before the romans invated Gaul. What is now known as the Conciergerie was originally built in the 13th century, but the same location had been used for the palace of French kings since the 10th century. It's the building in the center with the towers. After being converted to a prison it became the courthouse. During the revolution, hundreds of people were imprisoned there, and most of them were executed. The Pont au Change, just in front, was built in 1860 under the reign of Napoléon III. The Tour Eiffel, built in 1889, can be seen at the very back. In the foreground, the highway is definitively from the 20th century.

I was lucky to get a break in the clouds for this picture, because there it was sadly overcast for most of our stay. It's an 8 seconds exposure at f/18, ISO 200.

The ultimate Yogi, the diety of salvation, the highest source of attaining a state of bliss and absolute energy for man, Shiva is the personification of enlightenment - the state of nirvana, a freedom from suffering and the transcendence of the mind to the spiritual realm of limitless joy.

Shiva signifies absolute action and at the same time He is the stillness in the movement and the absorption of co-existing contradictions - the absolute reality beyond time, space and reason. He is the conciousness which bestows bliss and the eternal experience of energy, the portrayal of the potential energy contained in every atom.

The dance of Shiva is the divine motion that goes on inside every atom and the universe as a whole - the spectacular celestial dance, the display of all movements that occur in the inside and the outside of us. Represented in the form of a cylinder, the most stable and elementary shape in creation, He sustains all creation and is the source of all energies emanating from what he represents - Silence and Space.

As described on an audio CD titled The Chants of Shiva. Author - Anonymous.

Om Namah Shivaya is a popular mantra (chant/prayer) in Hinduism.

Its translation is "adoration (namas) to Shiva", preceded by the mystical syllable "Om".

The meaning of the Namaḥ Śivāya mantra was explained by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami:

Namaḥ Śivāya is the most holy name of God Śiva, recorded at the very center of the Vedas and elaborated in the Śaiva Agamas.

Na is the Lord's concealing grace, Ma is the world, Śi stands for Śiva, Va is His revealing grace, Ya is the soul. The five elements, too, are embodied in this ancient formula for invocation. Na is earth, Ma is water, Śi is fire, Vā is air, and Ya is ether, or Ākāśa. Many are its meanings.

Namaḥ Śivaya has such power, the mere intonation of these syllables reaps its own reward in salvaging the soul from bondage of the treacherous instinctive mind and the steel bands of a perfected externalized intellect. Namaḥ Śivāya quells the instinct, cuts through the steel bands and turns this intellect within and on itself, to face itself and see its ignorance. Sages declare that mantra is life, that mantra is action, that mantra is love and that the repetition of mantra, japa, bursts forth wisdom from within.

The book "The Ancient Power of Sanskrit Mantra and Ceremony: Volume I" by Thomas Ashley-Farrand defines Om Namah Shivaya as:

"This mantra has no direct translation. The sounds relate directly to the principles which govern each of the first five chakras on the spine...Earth, water, fire, air, ether. Notice that this does not refer to the chakras themselves which have a different set of seed sounds, but rather, the principles which govern those chakras in their place. A very rough, non-literal translation could be something like, 'Om and salutations to that which I am capable of becoming.' This mantra will start one out on the path of subtle development of spiritual attainments. It is the beginning on the path of Siddha Yoga, or the Yoga of Perfection of the Divine Vehicle."

"Na" refers to the Gross Body (annamayakosa), "Ma" refers to the Pranic Body (pranamayakosa), "Shi" or "Chi" refers to the Mental Body (manonmayakosa), "Va" refers to the Intellectual Body (vignanamayakosa) and "Ya" refers to the Blissful Body (anandamayakosa) and "OM" or the "silence" beyond these syllables refers to the Soul or Life within.

The metaphoric representations of Shiva as per the Holy scriptures:

Shiva's form:

Shiva has a Trident in the right lower arm, with a crescent moon on his head. He is said to be fair like camphor or like an ice clad mountain. He has fire and Damaru (drum) and Mala (beads) or a kind of weapon. In some depictions, he wears five serpents as ornaments, and a garland of skulls. He is pressing with his feet the demon Muyalaka, a dwarf holding a cobra. He faces south. Panchakshara (five syllables/elements) itself is his body. It is believed that Shiva became a god through meditating everyday.

Third eye:

Shiva is often depicted with a third eye, with which he burned Desire (Kāma) to ashes, called "Tryambakam", which occurs in many scriptural sources. It is said to symbolize him as the destroyer of all evil and ignorance.

Crescent moon:

Shiva bears on his head the crescent moon. The epithet "Chandraśekhara" - "Having the moon as his crest" (chandra = "moon"; śekhara = "crest, crown") refers to this feature. The crescent moon is shown on the side of the Lord's head as an ornament. The waxing and waning phenomenon of the moon symbolizes the time cycle through which creation evolves from the beginning to the end. Since the Lord is the Eternal Reality, He is beyond time. Thus, the crescent moon is only one of His ornaments. The wearing of the crescent moon in his head indicates that He has controlled the mind perfectly, is the master of time and is Himself timeless.

Sacred Ganges:

The Ganges river flows from the matted hair of Shiva. The epithet Gaṅgādhara ("bearer of the river Gaṅgā") refers to this feature. The Gaṅgā (Ganges), one of the major rivers of the country, is said to have made her abode in Shiva's hair. The flow of the Ganges is said to represent the nectar of immortality as well as signify the flow of scriptural teachings passing wisdom from one generation to the next.

Tiger skin:

He is often shown seated upon a tiger skin, an honour reserved for the most accomplished of Hindu ascetics, the Brahmarishis. Tiger represents lust. His sitting on the tiger’s skin indicates that He has conquered lust and is fearless.

Serpents:

Shiva is often shown garlanded with a snake. His wearing of serpents on the neck denotes wisdom and eternity. It is also said to signify the ego, which once mastered can be worn as an ornament.

Deer Skin:

Represents that He has removed the "Chanchalata" (tossing) of the mind. Deer jumps from one place to another swiftly. The mind also jumps from one object to another.

Trident:

Shiva's particular weapon is the trident. Held in His right hand it represents the three Gunas (qualities) — Sattva, Rajas and Tamas - Knowledge, Desire and Implementation. That is the emblem of sovereignty. He rules the world through these three Gunas.

Drum

The Damaru (hourglass shaped drum) in His left hand represents the Eternal Sound. It represents OM from which all languages are formed. It is He who formed the Sanskrit language out of the Damaru sound. With this language He gave us the teachings of the Holy Scriptures to guide us through life.

Beads:

The wearing of the beads denotes purity, sometimes with a rosary in the right hand denoting concentration.

Nandī:

Nandī, is the name of the bull that serves as Shiva's mount. Shiva's association with cattle is reflected in his name Paśupati, or Pashupati, translated "lord of cattle" or "lord of animals". The bull represents Dharma (righteousness). Lord Siva rides on the bull. This denotes that Lord Siva is the protector of Dharma, is an embodiment of Dharma or righteousness.

Walton-on-Thames is a riverside town with over 20,000 residents, situated between Sunbury Lock and Shepperton Lock, in the Borough of Elmbridge. It is only 15 miles from central London and has good communications by road, being close to the M25, M4 and M3 motorways. A fast train journey of only 25 minutes to Waterloo station makes it an ideal location for commuting to London. In fact, in 2008, a survey by the Halifax declared the Borough of Elmbridge to be the, "best place to live in Britain", with the highest quality of life in the United Kingdom. The media rapidly produced further commendations declaring Elmbridge to be the "Beverly Hills of Surrey" and claiming that even the weather here was better than the national average.

The town now has a new shopping centre, "The Heart", which is a covered mall with over 50 shops and restaurants and with outside restaurant seating. The development contains 279 apartments with views over Ashley Park. Walton-on-Thames has a modern leisure centre, the Xcel Leisure Complex, which opened in 2006, overlooking the River Thames. In addition to a 25 metre swimming pool, sports halls, climbing wall, health and fitness suite, it has an outside floodlit synthetic football pitch.

In the Domesday Book, Walton-on-Thames was recorded as, 'Waletona' and as having a church, two mills and a fishery.

The River Thames at Walton is an important crossing point. It was thought that Julius Caesar crossed here on his second invasion of Britain, but there is no evidence for this. Walton Bridge was the subject of a painting by Canaletto in 1754, but this wooden bridge was dismantled in 1783. J.M.W. Turner painted Walton Bridge in 1805, but this stone bridge collapsed in 1859. It is doubtful whether anyone would think the current structure is picturesque. It is the fifth bridge to cross the Thames at Walton and dates from 1999, when it was intended only to be temporary. Work on a new bridge is due to start in 2011 and completed in 2013.

Close to Walton Bridge is Desborough Island, which was created when the Desborough Channel was cut in 1935. It was constructed by the Thames Conservancy and named after Lord Desborough, the Chairman of the Board. The cut made a shorter journey possible by avoiding the meandering stretch of the Thames past Shepperton and Halliford.

At Walton Bridge is the garage of H.W. Motors, (Hersham and Walton Motors) who were the first Aston Martin dealership in the world. In the 1950s, they built their own racing cars and Sir Stirling Moss competed in his first Formula One Grand Prix in an H.W. Motors car.

Next to H.W. Motors is the Walton Playhouse. This is a theatre used for community productions and local amateur dramatic societies. It was built by Cecil Hepworth as a power house for Walton Film Studios. They closed in 1924 and its architect, George Carvill, bought the building. For many years, it was known as the, "Walton Hop", reputed to be the first disco in the United Kingdom. It closed in 1990.

St. Mary's Parish Church is of Saxon origin, with parts dating back to the 12th century. It is set at the highest point in the town and has a square flint tower. The churchyard contains the graves of many New Zealand soldiers who died in the First World War. Mount Felix House in Walton, which has now been demolished, was used as a hospital for New Zealand troops. The New Zealand connection is maintained in the street name, 'New Zealand Avenue' and the Wellington pub in the town centre.

As would be expected, the riverside pubs have been visited by notable characters. In 1909, Jerome Kern, the composer of the Broadway musical, "Showboat" and many popular songs, including Ol' Man River, met Eva Leale, the landlord's daughter at the Swan pub. They were married at St. Mary's Church, Walton the following year. The Anglers pub, with its seating on the riverbank, is very popular. A short walk along the towpath towards Hampton Court brings you to The Weir Hotel. Overlooking the Weir, this pub is extremely popular with walkers and cyclists, especially on Sundays, where people enjoy their roast dinners.

Walton-on-Thames has had many famous residents, but Julie Andrews is probably the most notable. She was born Julia Wells in 1935 in Rodney House Maternity Hospital, Rodney Road. She became, at fourteen, the youngest ever solo performer to appear at a Royal Variety Performance in 1948 at the London Palladium. She married her first husband, Tony Walton, in St. Mary's Church, Oatlands, Weybridge in 1959. Her most famous role was as Maria Von Trapp in the film, "The Sound of Music", which became 20th Century Fox's biggest ever film.

In Station Avenue, is a 1960s iconic office building. Formerly the head office of Birds Eye Frozen Foods, it is now a Grade II listed building. My sister worked there and remembers that there were live penguins in the grounds.

Next year will be an exciting time for Walton-on-Thames, when the 2012 Olympic Games commences. On the opening day of the 2012 Games, on Saturday 28th July, the Mens' Cycling Road Race (250km) starts from the Mall in London. The 145 riders will head towards Walton and race along Hurst Road from Hampton Court into Terrace Road, into Walton Town Centre, down Oatlands Drive to Weybridge and then onto the Surrey Hills. The womens' race takes place the following day over a shorter (140km) route, but still through Walton. The 2012 Olympic Games Cycling Time Trials will be held close by on 1st August at Hampton Court. The whole 13 mile section of the route which cuts through Elmbridge will be surfaced with electric blue non-slip Tarmac. This is the internationally recognised cycling blue used on time trials. The blue colour means overhead cameras can track competitors using matt black background enhancements.

On 14th August, 2011, an official test event for the 2012 Summer Olympics Road Race took place over the Olympic route, from The Mall in London, through Walton-on-Thames, to Box Hill, returning to the Mall, passing through Esher. This was the London – Surrey Cycle Classic Race. It was won by Mark Cavendish, MBE, aged 26. He is the top sprinter in the Tour de France, having won twenty stages and in September 2011, went on to win the Road World Championship in Denmark. On 22nd December 2011, Mark was voted the 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He is probably Great Britain’s best prospect for a gold medal in 2012. It is hoped that he can repeat his success next year.

My best friend's little almost 4-year-old boy, Nicholas. I took a bunch of shots of his toy cars with my macro lens - showing him the shots as we went along, in order to keep him entertained while his mom prepared some food. He loved it! Then he wanted to get in front of the camera and kept doing all sorts of funny things with his tongue. Silly boy!

We were in his mom's kitchen at night with only one overhead for light, that's why the SOOC is so very terrible! But, with a little patience and creativity in Photoshop I think I got quite a nice portrait of this little guy!

Murfreesboro, TN.

View On Black Most Highly Recommended.

Like so many others, Colonel Hardee Murfree was given a land grant by the United States Government for his service in the American Revolution but Murfree remained in North Carolina rather than move to frontier Tennessee. His daughter, Sally, and her husband, Dr. James Maney, inherited the land and built a log cabin on the land. Sally died in 1857 as the home passed to son, Lewis, and his wife, Rachel Adeline Maney, who was the daugter of Tennessee Governor, Newton Canon.

Under ownership of Lewis and Adeline the house underwent four additions and extensive renovation including this Italianate front facade which you see in the picture. This was the fourth addition to the house which extends to the rear and is not in view. This addition included two formal parlors, Guest rooms, and formal dining area. The large wrap around veranda with chamferred arches and columns is its most prominent feature.

The house entertained such guests as oceanographer, Mathew Fontaine Maury; 1860 Presidential candidate, John Bell (buried at Mount Olivet cemetery); Sarah Polk, wife of US President James K. Polk, and Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis...... Then came the war.

The town of Murfreesboro changed hands several times in 1862. In July, 1862, a Federal detachment of 1,000 troops occupied Murfreesboro a portion of which under the command of Colonel William Duffield (9th Michigan Infantry Regiment) was encamped near the spring which lies to the right of this photo.

On July 13, 1862, Confederate Cavalry under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest raided Murfreesboro attacking all Federal positions including the Rutherford County Courthouse where Confederate prisoners were being held. The fighting came to Oaklands where a skirmish took place on the Oaklands front lawn and was witnessed by the Maney children from the second floor window in the center of the house (arched window). During the skirmish, Duffield was shot and wounded. He was carried inside the Oaklands where the Maneys nursed him back to health. The Federal detachment surrendered the town of Murfreesboro back to the Confederates inside Oaklands. The town would ramin in Confederate hands until the major battle of Stones River (Dec. 31 , 1862 - Jan. 2, 1863) - a battle of over 80,000 combatants and 24,000 casualties. Murfreesboro would remain under Federal control for the remainder of the war.

Of course, with the end of the war came the end of slavery and plantations such as Oaklands was dependent upon slavery for its sustainence. As a matter of fact, slaves physically built the mansion and made the very brick utilized. Eventually, Adeline was forced to sell portions of the property to pay off debt and was forced to move (to a smaller mansion - poor girl). ONe piece of property sold became Evergreen cemetery from which I have taken a few photos.

By the 1960's the mansion was abandoned and in complete and utter ruin. The roof had caved in and the house was in deplorable shape. It has since been restored and is open to the public for tours.

Oh, that Colonel Duffield who was shot in skirmish on the front lawn - he recovered from his wounds and sent the Maney's a set of silverware, pitcher, etc. as an appreciation for their hospitality.

JEAN-BAPTISTE GODIN ( ENGLISH )

Jean-Baptiste André Godin (26 January 1817 -29 January 1888) was a French industrialist and social experimentor born on the 26th of January 1817 at Esquéhéries (Aisne).

The son of an artisan, he entered an iron-works at an early age, and at seventeen made a tour of France as journeyman. Returning to Esquéhéries in 1837, he started a small factory for the manufacture of castings for heating-stoves. The business increased rapidly, and for the purpose of railway facilities was transferred to Guise in 1846. At the time of Godin's death in 1888 the annual output was over four millions of francs (4,160,000), and in 1908 the employees numbered over 2000 and the output was over 280,000.

An ardent disciple of Charles Fourier, he advanced a considerable sum of money towards the disastrous Fourierist experiment of V. P. Considerant (q.v.) in Texas (known as La Reunion. He profited, however, by its failure, and in 1859 started the Familistère, or community settlement, of Guise on more carefully laid plans.

The Familistère forms a town within the town of Guise. It comprises, in addition to a large factory, three large buildings, each four stories high, capable of housing all the work-people, each family having two or three rooms. The main building consists of three rectangular blocks joined at the corners. Each of these blocks has a central court covered with a glass roof under which children can play in all weather. There is no church of any sort. (There are, of course, churches within the rest of Guise). At the back of the main block there was a nursery. There is a separate block, known as the "economat", containing various shops, refreshment rooms and recreation rooms of various kinds(?), stores for the purchase of groceries, drapery and every necessity. This has recently (2008) been restored and is now a cafe, a shop selling books, postcards etc and an exhibition area. There were also allotments for the workers.

Opposite the main block there was a building containing a theater for concerts and dramatic entertainments and a primary school. There was also a communal laundry and swimming pool. This was a few years ago derelict but has now been restored. The swimming pool is still a swimming poll but the laundry is a meeting room and the drying room is now (2008) an exhibition room. In 1880 the whole was turned into a co-operative society, with provision by which it eventually became the property of the workers.

Godin manufactured cookers and heating stoves of many kinds mainly made from cast iron castings. Sometimes these were enameled. These are still to be found in use all over France. They can be found for sale on eBay.

This business was still owned by the workers in the 1950s but soon after was taken over by Le Creuset. It is not obvious that the factory is still functioning. It is seems the domestic building were privatised. The state of the domestic buildings was deteriorating but has recently been awarded EU money for it to be restored.

In 1871 Godin was elected deputy for Aisne, but retired in 1876 to devote himself to the management of the Familistère. In 1882 he was created a Knight of the Legion of Honor.

Godin was the author of Solutions sociales (1871); Les Socialistes et les Droits du travail (1874); Mutualité sociale et association du capital et du travail (1880); La Republique du travail et la reforme parlementaire (1889).

Port Meadow is a large area of common land to the north and west of Oxford. The meadow is an ancient area of grazing land, still used for horses and cattle, and has never been ploughed. In return for helping to defend the kingdom against the marauding Danes, the Freemen of Oxford were given the 120ha of pasture next to the River Thames by King Alfred, who founded the City in the 10th Century. The Freemen's collective right to graze their animals free of charge was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 and has been exercised ever since.

It runs from Jericho to Wolvercote along the east (left) bank of the River Thames, with the railway and the suburb of North Oxford further to the east, and the village of Binsey to the west. It is a typical English floodmeadow and is a favourite area for walking, with easy access from the city of Oxford. At the southern end of the meadow is Fiddler's Island in a loop of the river Thames. In the winter the meadow floods and, if frozen, forms a huge and safe area for skating. In late spring vast areas are carpeted with buttercups. Horses, cattle and geese graze the meadow and many birds can often be seen.

We had a good boatman, who seemed to know where to find what birds - he took us to this massive rock, where a huge flock of Streak-Throated Swallows(Hirundo fluvicola, also known as Indian Cliff Swallow) had built their nest. For a while all activity seemed to be dull, and then we realized that the parents had gone to fetch food for the little ones that were waiting in the nests. Whenever an adult came by, all of the juveniles would pop their heads out asking for food. This particular picture - I was attempting to get a picture of the juveniles, and the adult just whizzed past.

One of my most favorite destinations on earth is Sikkim, India. I spent a few days in this chalet around Christmas in 2003. From here, at the crack of dawn, I could see the rays of the rising sun fall on the face of Kanchenjungha, the third highest (and, in my view, the prettiest) peak in the world. This is what the sunrise looked like through the window.

And here are additional views of the peak.

This is a blended photo, made from two handheld shots at different exposures, at a time when I was not even aware of the concept of HDR! I simply made two exposures because it looked to me like the sky and the foreground were equally appealing and each needed its own exposure! It amazes me to think that I am able to use them together in this way. However, because I was not really careful about keeping the POV of the two shots identical, there is a bit of a blur in the blended image.

Technically, then, this is my first HDR shot.

Jongwang Lee: Biography

Lee was born in Seoul, Korea in 1960. He attended Sunhwa Art High School and received a B.F.A. in Sumi-e painting and drawing from HongIk, University, Seoul, and an M.F.A. from the National University of Tokyo Arts and Sciences, Japan.

Lee was active in the resistance movement during the reign of South Korean military dictator President Park and lost many friends during the reign of terror leading up to Park's assassination in 1979. Lee immigrated to Japan in 1988, where he would spend the next ten years establishing himself as a leading contemporary artist.

Lee has been featured in group and solo shows throughout museums and galleries in Japan and Korea, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and the Kawasaki City Museum. Since moving to New York in 1999, he has exhibited at the Sonoma Museum of Visual Arts, CA, the Hammond Museum, NY, the Korean Embassy, Washington, DC, the Japan American Art Association at the Tenri Gallery, NY, the International Art Festival Lantern of the East, Los Angeles, CA, and more.

Lee has lectured in Japanese and Korean universities on "Oriental Sensation and Neo-postmodernism" and "Contemporary Visual Art and Psychology." He is a tenured instructor of Sumi-e, oil painting and drawing at the Nakano Art Center, Japan, and currently teaches Sumi-e painting at the National Jewish Council Center, NY. He is a member of the New Century Artists, NY, the Japanese Artists Association, NY, the Korean Japanese Exchange Art Association, Tokyo, and the Japan International Art Group, Tokyo.

About the work

Jongwang Lee's massive, liquid paintings, rendered with a complex and precise mixture of resin, oil paint and pigments, express the artist's quest for a balance between the spiritual and the physical worlds. Examining the proverbial return to the womb, Lee paints human forms that float in a watery substance and inhabit a world before time.

Ironically, Lee's spiritual quest has resulted in a series of sculptural paintings that evoke opulent, overgrown gemstones. One has the illusion of gazing deep into a cross-section of colored and decorated amber, peering into the past through layers of time.

While Lee's recent work has a contemporary Pop Art sensibility-with its day glow colors and bold compositions-his influences are drawn from 5,000 years of Korean history. "My work is Oriental. I am influenced by Korean Sumi-e brush painting and Eastern philosophies, as well as by my experiences in the West," says the artist.

Lee begins each painting with an underpinning of a linear web. The lines act as a link to another place, bridging spiritual and earthly realms. Next, he layers the temperamental resin mixture with additional layers. The resin dries at various times, depending on the thickness of the paint mixture and how it is applied.

"I have wrestled with this devilish resin for nearly 20 years," says Lee. "After many experiments and many failings, I now know how to negotiate it."

Artist Statement

My artwork is a visualization of man's alienation from his soul in this highly materialistic, technological society.

My paintings are infused with symbolism drawn from 5,000 years of Korean history. In the past, Shamans used several kinds of rope placed around the ceremonial area to communicate with the soul world. The linear elements in my paintings echo the role of the Shaman's ropes. They are a connection between the spirit world and reality. On another level, they represent a connection between people.

My grandmother was a famous Shaman in Korea. During my childhood I was deeply impacted by her performances and felt a strong contact with the spiritual world. This early experience has been an important source of inspiration for my art. Eastern philosophies and Western experiences have deeply influenced my work.

For six years I studied traditional Korean Sumi-e painting, learning from the old masters. Before that time, I had already begun to develop new techniques, experimenting with both oriental and western materials. Using a palette knife, a trowel and other less conventional tools, I have created my own original art form.

Moving to the US has felt like a rebirth for me. I believe many immigrants feel like this when they come to a new country, On one hand, I want to retreat to the familiar, safe, comfortable place of my own history and birth country, akin to returning to the womb. But, at the same time, I want to be reborn, in a sense, to enjoy the freedom and the cultural and political climate of the US.

I hope that my work encourages people to look within themselves and realize the unbelievable power of life and the dormant potential within each of us.

A BIGGER PARADISE HERE

Sunrise time is the most magical moment in the entire day. Its when silence pervails, and life begins quietly, yet surely at the crack of dawn.

Here in Vedanthangal, the birds not only seem in paradise because of the eco-system that has been created for them, but also becuase the sun beautifully lights up their world.

Wonderful start to the new week my friends.

I SHOOT IT AT GANGASAGAR MELA(FAIR).

Gangasagar Mela is the largest fair celebrated in West Bengal(INDIA). This fair is held where the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal form a nexus. Hence the name Gangasagar Mela. This festival is celebrated during January every year and is a major attraction for millions of piligrams from all over India.

The pilgrims come for a holy dip on Makar Sankranti (last day of the Bengali Month) Negha -Mid January. They take dips in the Ganges and offer water to the Sun God. The dip, as they say, purifies their 'self' and according to them, 'punya' can be obtained thus. When they are done with the ritual obligations, they head towards the Kapilmuni Temple situated nearby, to worship the deity as a mark of respect.

In every year in the time of fair, some poor local people temporarily build up a tent with plastic & bamboo to beg with their child from the men who came here to obtain "punya" (accumulate of religious merits).

Olympus E-30, Zuiko 12-60, Heliopan Polarizer

We spent a beautiful summer day in Low Tatras on Saturday. Left home in the morning and hiked from Srdiečko to Chopok, Ďumbier and back to Srdiečko where we left our car. Ďumbier (2,043 m) and Chopok (2,024 m) are two highest peaks of Low Tatras and are connected by the long distance E8 European walking route leading 4,700 km (2,920 miles) across Europe, from Kerry in Ireland to Istanbul in Turkey.

We had a nice sunny weather at the beginning so I was testing a new Heliopan polarizer.. yup it's a top quality ;) Anyways it got a bit cloudy later and all those beautiful panoramic views were quite hazy. So I tried to focus on nice details instead. This shot shows a zig-zag walking trail leading to the North part of Low Tatras that you can see from Demänovské sedlo (1,756 m).

Thanks for looking!

Your feedback is always appreciated...

It's the end of the year and OAD (aka Steve) posted this cool little piece that features the best meals of 2008 (and restaurants with potential) from a questionnaire sent out to some pretty well known chefs (at least ones that have made the 2007 OAD guide), food critics, notable food bloggers/destination diners, food scientists like Dr. This, and then... little ol' food enthusiast me. (humble *blush, blush*)

Granted my meal at Ristorante dal Pescatore was in the latter part of last year, it's impact still struck me until now (truth be told I was asked what my best meal was in the past year - which I interpreted as being full year, not just calender). Anyway, the mention of many Northern Europe (and a few American and Asian) restaurants has me mentally noting these establishments in the event I might have the fortune of visiting those areas. This is part one of two. :)

"Best Meals of 2008

‘Tis the time of year for lists. After racking my brain to try and figure out what type of list people might like to read, I came up with the following idea. I sent out an email to an an assortment of chefs, food writers, restaurant owners and bloggers and I asked them the following questions:

1. Name the best meal that you had in 2008

2. Name the new chef or restaurant who showed the most potential in 2008

Their answers were quite illuminating. Or at least I thought they were. What I learned was that fine dining in Northern Europe is steadily improving and both chefs and diners are now traveling to countries like Germany, Austria, Holland and Denmark just to sample the restaurants. And Tokyo, because of the new Michelin Guide, is another city that is starting to become popular with Western diners. Let’s see if the same dynamic occurs in Hong Kong and Macau now that Michelin has published a guide to those cities as well. But I think the most important thing I learned is that there isn’t all that much difference between what the pros like and what the foodies like, and as you run down the list, you will see that they each cite many of the same places. Anyway enough of me talking about what they told me, you can read it for yourself. Enjoy!

View On Black
