They have the best lemonade! They shut down from 4pm to 8pm to set up two seatings of dinner for which you have to make reservations ahead of time - steak at 5pm or stew at 6:30pm. We had the stew, which was amazing. They also serve two seatings of breakfast at 5am and 6:30am. They don't serve lunch but they do have snacks you can purchase. It's not air-conditioned, but they do have a swamp cooling system and folks hang out during the day to play cards, write in their journals or on postcards, read, etc.

Cephalanthera austiniae or Phantom Orchid is a very rare orchid. The Phantom Orchid is the only member of the genus Cephalanthera that is in North America and a mycoheterotrophic plant. The plant is terrestrial, mycoheterotrophic, leafless and completely white. Mycoheterotrophic plants are nonphotosynthetic parasites using fungal intermediaries to withdraw nutrients from other plants. Unlike holoparasitic plants, there is no direct contact of the parasite with its host plant. Instead, mycoheterotrophic plants are attached to hosts indirectly through fungal intermediates and are considered to be epiparasitic. The plant can stay dormant for years before sending out as stem. It may bloom once and then go into remission for up to 17 years. The flowers are white with a small yellow spot on the lip. This is the only North American orchid that is completely devoid of chlorophyll. Its food is drawn from the rotting humus of the forest floor, with the help of symbiotic fungi that “infects” the plant’s fibrous roots, sharing nutrients with it. The habitat is in the rich soils of dark coniferous or deciduous forests along mountain ranges. They only grow in forests with little to no undergrowth and limestone deposits. The distribution is in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Southwestern British Columbia.
Threat to the species survival are also increasing through habitat loss. High levels of development and logging in key orchid habitats continue to place this species in peril, as well as mountain bike activity and native plant gathering.

Went to see Phantom at the Cadillac Palace Theater in Chicago. Luckily there is no Broadway strike here!
The Phantom and I go way back. This was definitely the best staging that I have seen.
You can't really see it here, but I have on a pink silk skirt and pink shoes with flowers on them. It was my nod to Paris. We ate at Cafe Margot before the show to complete the french-themed evening.
Actually, the french evening was capped off at an Irish pub... whatever...
Some of the prints on the wall in the little room for The Phantom Society. If I had had £10 to spare, I would definitely bought their special 'collected phantom' book. It looked really nice.
Unfortunately, I was keenly earning money to spend on food, so I just took a handful of free badges instead. Free badges! Yay!
They were really nice badges, too.

Every year, rain, sleet or snow (Ha Ha)---out of nowhere pops up the Seasonal Stores: Fireworks StandS, Pumkin Patches, Halloween Costumne Stores as well as the famous CHRISTMAS TREE LOTS. Find an empty corner on a lot or a closed retail store, and you will spot---the Seasonal Store!
The typical FIREWORKS STAND pops up about a couple of weeks before the 4th of July. Sits empty waiting for the right moment to open. Then on or around the 1st of July it opens, then until July 4, 2011 it operates, with a steady stream of customers. FIREWORKS STANDS are heavily regulated down to the type of Fireworks they can sell, hours of operation as well as when they can start selling Fireworks to when they have to stop and close up shop for the year. FIREWORKS STANDS are only permitted in certain cities across Southern California as many outlaw them outright as in Los Angeles City. Most, if not all FIREWORKS STANDS are operated by local charities to fund raise for thier charity. As quick as they arrive, the FIREWORKS STANDS quickly disappear within days after the 4th of July and not a trace is left after they are gone. The typical FIREWORKS STAND has not changed in many years. I even worked at a couple many years ago, when they were permitted in Culver City!

(updated to replace photo with a lighter image to try to compensate for flickr's tendency to darken my images)
Inspired by a recent post by Neil Phillips www.flickr.com/photos/ukwildlife/6338683312/ I decided to take another try at shooting a phantom midge. This turned out better that my last attempt but still working to master aquatic photography challenges.
