Pearlvine Milkweed (Matelea reticulata) is a vine in the Milkweed family with heart-shaped leaves, five green netted petals, and a curious opalescent center.

A jewel, cradled in a safety net, surrounded by hearts of love.

The plant is an endemic--that is, it grows only in the Texas hill country. Like other milkweeds it is a host plant for the Queen and Monarch butterflies.

They are edge plants, growing where the forest meets sunlight, requiring not dappled light, but both shade and sun. It grows in the trees along one of my paths.

Morning clouds, sculpted by high, cold winds, are illuminated by brilliant sunrise light in Boulder, Colorado. One of my favorite aspects of autumn along the Front Range is the lenticular cloud formations that occur with some regularity. They are sleek and pearlescent, reminding me of the inimitable style of 1930s automobiles.

I feel very honored to to blog for The Crystal Heart Festival today, together with my very special guest Raven Bell who was so kind to join this picture and pose for me. Thank you for being my mysterious wizard in this picture and for all your patience during the shoot, Raven! I know it was a bit of a pain as I kept crashing xD but I enjoyed taking this picture a lot and it was a blast to edit! I hope we get to take a picture again o/

Yesterday I decided to observe the Pearlvine Milkweed flowers to see who might visit.

It appears that, at least on this occasion, there is some type of ant with large, nearly pearlescent abdomens busily collecting nectar.

This image gives a better view of the sticky, yellow ring beneath the faceted pearl of the flower's stigma and also captures the sinuous curve of the petals that could not be seen in my previous photo.

The transition is magnificent... from lustrous pearly white, 4 petaled flowers, with pink pearlescent centers, purple hooked stamens, dots of golden pollen, and more pearly buds, pink at the base, waiting to bloom.

Petals falling, highlighting rosy axis support stems and sepal cups from which magenta seeds will form.

Magenta and purple berry like seeds dramatizing the brilliant rose tones of the stems and deeper tones.

She gazed to the gods that were her parents in their photo, the statuesque stances conveying their power even though the painted canvas. Having wandered her way through the castle she found enchanted pages of the codex, a gemstone decorated sword, a scythe glowing with unspeakable power. and of course she had to try out the hammer of judgement. None of these suited her though, finding no resonance with them. She searched deeper through the endless hallways and cavernous rooms, a glimmer of a pearlescent white behind a curtained room. She found it...she found the weapon in which she would go forward it....
