Ferry going past Whitehead Golf Club

66748 West Burton 50 heading 6M38, the 11.20 Arcow Quarry - Bredbury. 29 November 2016.

In the midst of a long, steady climb out of Carson City, the former McCloud River Railroad #18 lifts the pops as she hauls a short freight past the gaping Overman Pit, en route to Gold Hill, just a quarter mile or so ahead.

McCloud 18 is a transplant to these parts, arriving at the "new" Virginia & Truckee Railroad a few years ago. Initially, I had some misgivings about seeing a California Log-Hog operating on this storied line, because.....well because she just doesn't look like a V&T engine. She doesn't have the slim, pretty lines that the V&T 25, 26 and 27 were showing off in the last days of the original railroad. That said....the 18 puts on a marvelous show, and of the two steamers we saw on this 2014 Lerro Photography Charter, I suspect that she was the hands-down favorite among the photographers. The massive, open-pit mine that she's passing in this photo didn't exist when the original railroad was removed. Crossing it was the biggest obstacle that the Nevada State Commission faced in the reconstruction of the Virginia City Branch as a tourist line. The train is running on a massive fill constructed of 300,000 cubic yards of earth and stone, which now bridges the eastern side of the Overman Pit. Although the project has not returned the land to its historic state, it has turned a man-made eyesore into something that has a spectacular beauty all its own.

Passing Swinefleet inbound to Goole 7 January 2022. Launched as STONE by Brodogradiliste 'Begej', Zrenjanin (yard no. 225). Completed by Brodogradiliste Kladovo as MARBLE BAY for Boreal Shipping & Industrier A/S. Sold in 2005 to Wilson Shipowning A/S (Wilson Eurocarriers A/S, managers) and renamed WILSON HUMBER.

A group of friends passing beneath the still-lit stained glass windows of a bank. First purposeful night-time street walk, mounting a 50mm f/1.8 prime. Definitely high ISO is becoming much more tolerable for me (although the D800's stellar performance helps), and I'm appreciating what it does for monochrome more and more.

St Martin’s in the Fields, London

Situated in St Martin’s Lane, WC2, the entrance to the church faces Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery.

The year 1222 is the earliest reference to the church, however there is not much known about it until 1542, when, in the reign of Henry VIII, he had it rebuilt. Apparently to house plague victims and prevent them from passing through the Palace of Westminster.

In 1606 the building was enlarged, being built over the old graveyard. This was in the reign of James I, at the same time the old part of the church was fully renovated. Sometime later in the 1600’s galleries were added to increase the size of the congregation. Nell Gwynne was buried there.

During the eighteenth century funds were allocated to build new church, the architect James Gibbs was chosen to do the work. Between 1722, when the foundation stone was laid and 1724, the work was completed. The spire rises to 59mtrs (192 ft in old money). Although not popular in design at the time, this template has been used on many notable churches over the world. St Andrews church in Glasgow, and St Andrews church in Chennai, India.

The church is now famous for its work with the homeless and youth. It also has many concerts as well as jazz sessions in the Crypt.

The east window was designed by Shirazeh Houshiary and Pip Horne, it was manufactured by Michael Mayer of Munich. It reminds me of Edmund Munch’s ‘The Scream’. Although, that is not, the original intention. The Jacob’s Ladder story, being the influence.

Waited ages but nothing came past - in either direction...

In scenery I like flat country.

In life I don’t like much to happen.

In personalities I like mild colorless people.

And in colors I prefer gray and brown.

My wife, a vivid girl from the mountains,

says, “Then why did you choose me?”

Mildly I lower my brown eyes—

there are so many things admirable people do not understand.

For the "Hitting the Streets" assignment I chose to explore the quick paced culture and lifestyle of local Italians by photographing them in transit. All of the images are created 'in passing', while quickly approaching then moving away from the subject on the street while walking. I photographed each subject unknowingly 'from the hip' and had only a few seconds to capture them before we went our separate ways. I found it to be a really delicate process that had to be timed, set, and focused perfectly. There was a very specific time frame where the image could be made and once it was gone, it was gone forever. Many of the subjects I attempted to capture were lost to poor focusing, underexposure, and other technical problems. Working through the trials makes each of the successful images even more valuable to me.

There are all kind of vehicles on the streets in rural Egypt. This shot in the town of Edfu.

My monthly composite shot using "lighten mode". Light trails on Shoreham High Street as a bus does a u-turn at the roundabout by the Bridge Inn.

Color on it's way out as "Passing Seasons" change the landscapes around us. A friend once said to think of this as the beautiful colors are just going to sleep for a few months and will return to brighten our world once again. Talk about the ever positive thinking type.

This is still the second day in Essaouira and I think this picture reflects good an everyday situation.

A poor old man stands by the street and tourists are passing by .. but it is like that .. its just not possible to give everyone money.

A rain cloud passing over part of Darwin harbour.

This was taken on East Point Road. I love how the storms/rain in Darwin are always so isolated, so you can see them passing by like this.

This is 3 vertical shots stitched together, but as I wasn't using a tripod, it came out a bit wonky so there was a lot of cropping involved!

Still waiting on my filters... gr. But. I do have a car and am sussing out some places I want to go back and take pictures! YAY!

"After seeing various successes with the previous Battlefield Manipulation Unit, technicians of the Foundation were instructed by the board of the SF to change certain specifics of the suit. Such specifics were that of the arms: technicians made them more easily able to move, putting less strain on the pilots. The new BMUs were put into mass production after passing inspection from high ranking leaders of the Foundation."

_____________

I tweaked it up a little bit. The arms can now do a full 90 degree lift up sideways and are much more pose able. It's a little hard to explain, but just trust me on that ;D

I'll note all the nifty stuff.
