Watching this eagle pair work on their nest at Tierra Verde was a beautiful thing to watch. Beginning at sunrise they took turns bringing more material for the nest. This lasted for about an hour before they rested in a nearby tree. I hope that this will be a successful season for this couple.
Today my other half had the day off, so we went to Hamilton Zoo. Swans aren't the most exotic of critters at the zoo, but they're one of my favourite animals.
The geese talk to each other as the fly into the marsh. The back one is honking in this picture. Amazing birds.

A pair of locomotives at the Bluegrass Railroad Museum in Versailles, KY.
In the foreground is GE 45-ton center cab KU #001...a former Tyrone Power Station switcher.
In the back is Norfolk & Western #675...the EMD GP-9 is equipped with dual control stands, allowing the engine to be operated from either side of the cab.
Despite his long eyelashes, Usaggie 010 (who doesn't have a name yet) is definitely a boy. I think his arrival made Almond very happy.

It was a stunning day to be up the mountain so I was persuaded to haul my rather overweight frame up to the ptarmigan spot on the Cairngorms. The views were stunning and there was hardly a breath of wind. I found this pair of ptarmigan hanging out - I thought it was a bit more unusual getting the birds as close together in the frame and was delighted with the intimate setting that they provided me. It was difficult metering the white birds against the snow but I think it has work out ok and gives an idea as to how well these birds blend into the snow background.
Looks like disaster struck this pair, looking at the feathers all over the nest site implies that their signet met with an untimely death recently! I know they were sitting on eggs earlier this summer!

Inspired by Conall explaining that orange tip butterflies usually only ever lay one egg becasue of the cannabalistic nature of their larvae, I went hunting for eggs! This is one of the ones I found - will post some of the pair of eggs I found tomorrow….
Never a fan of these, probably ex National Express judging by the trim these Volvo's just think they looked tired from new never seemed to have the charachter of the Paramount or Supreme
This pair of Mute Swans has been hanging out at the lake for much of the past week. I haven't seen them at this location before, and have to assume they are the same ones that are normally seen near UCSB.
I spotted this pair of geeps, while driving through Hodgkins. Well worth waiting 45 minutes for them to pull out of the yard.

Went out with my daughter to shoot today and had the chance to play with my new Christmas present...Nikkor 18-200 (Thanks Kelly), we followed some Snow Geese around China Lake for a couple of hours...had fun trying anyway....

The Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens) is a North American species of goose. Its name derives from the typically white plumage. The genus of this bird is disputed. The American Ornithologists' Union and BirdLife International for example place this species and the other two "white" geese in Chen, while some other authorities place it in the more traditional "grey" goose genus Anser.
This goose breeds in northern Canada and the northeastern tip of Siberia, and winters much further south in the continent in the southern USA and beyond.
Snow geese mainly eat plant material found in shallow water or on land. Outside of the nesting season, they usually feed in flocks. In winter, snow geese feed on left-over grain in fields. They migrate in large flocks, often visiting traditional stopover habitats in spectacular numbers.
Their nests are usually located in a slightly elevated location on the ground, built with plant material and lined with down. They mate for life.
The population of Greater Snow Geese was in decline at the beginning of the 20th century, but has now recovered to sustainable levels. Snow Geese in North America have increased to the point where the tundra breeding areas in the Arctic and the saltmarsh wintering grounds are both becoming severely degraded, and this affects other species using the same habitat.
