Due to the scarcity of fresh cut flowers during the Spanish period, silver ramilletes were used instead to decorate important colonial church altars. They would shine and dazzle tremulously when hit by light. Made of meticulously hand-hammered and twisted silver in the Naturalistic style, they appear to be a small flock of magpies happily perched on plum blossoms, a popular Chinese composition that symbolizes an expression of a good wish. This type of ramillete is unusual and very rare.

This pair of Canada Geese were starting their nesting last spring at Llano Seco Wildlife Refuge. As I walked closer they let it be known that I was close enough! They seemed to have their heads together at this moment--I didn't stick around to see exactly what they had discussed!

This pair was busy feeding an active nest in an old woodpecker hole in this long dead aspen snag in a young clearcut. After we finished up the Breeding Bird Survey, we had time to go back and scour some locations for interesting tidbits. We stopped here to find Sharp-tailed Grouse (eventually spooked one) but there were other goodies as well. June 20, 2010.

This pair of Shoveler ducks is a new species for Christchurch Park. Not sure if they will stay and breed or if it is just a stop over on their way to their regular breeding ground.

Why does his neck look funny? Well, because he was engaged in giving me a sound scolding for disturbing his private time with the little lady. I'd found them in the creek, then trailed them up into a field.
