Captured in semi-silhouette as the sun tries to breakthrough a blanket of cloud and rain, the secondman is in wet weather gear as he changes the points to allow 4MT No. 41312 to reverse in the headshunt at Lymington Pier. The locomotive is running round a Brockenhurst to Lymington Pier service on Sunday, 2nd April 1967.
This was the very last day of operation for the very last steam operated passenger branch line in the UK. The headboard reads
'LAST DAY OF STEAM
1st July 1858 - 2nd April 1967
Brockenhurst - Lymington Last Steam Hauled Branch on British Railways'.
Beyond the locomotive are the marshes of the Boldre Foreshore, with yachts moored on the Short Reach of the Lymington River and in the far distance, almost lost in the mist, is the Isle of Wight.

Meet Mr. Robert Riley, founder of Rock Island Rail who has brought his dream of a modern day Rock Island to life but in the Mississippi Delta region. On May 23, 2020 a special run was operated to debut the freshly painted GP38s with their "Bankruptcy Blue" regalia. A special round of appreciation goes out to all involved who made this event possible.

Steamranger Heritage Railway operates a variety of Heritage South Australian locomotives and rollingstock on their exclusive broad-gauge heritage trains in the Southern regions of Adelaide between Mt Barker and Victor Harbor. Their most popular run is the ‘Cockle Train’ running the half hour journey between Goolwa and Victor Harbor. 02/01/20.
The consist of 5 passenger cars led by ex SAR steam locomotive 621 is captured on the Investigator Straight between Port Elliot and Victor Harbor on the 14:35 Cockle Train ex Goolwa.

On June 24 2018, Southern Shorthaul Railroad operated their first grain train on the Mildura line since it was recently converted from broad to standard gauge as part of the Murray Basin Rail Project in taking place in Victoria's North/West region.
The train loaded at Birchip and ran as #7984 bound for Appleton Dock in Melbourne.
Travelling on the standard gauge lines in the state, the journey from Birchip saw the train run south to Maryborough, then west to Ararat along the cross country line which reopened in Feb 2018.
From Ararat the train headed via Cressy to North Geelong, then onto Melbourne from there.

This new commute quickly became a route that I really looked forward to seeing everyday for the last year....and now I kind of miss this tram ride right now, but looking forward to it returning soon! (Due to construction, the trams aren't running)

Door gunner.
A door gunners role was maintain the manually operated weapons system on board a helicopter. His function was to bring suppressive fire support to the aircraft and also to support ground troops.

Now that I looked up "steam roller" I am guessing this modern version is not operated by steam so would be a "road roller", though I think "steam roller" is more readily recognized as a term. See Wikepedia's link.
CN 5432 east, operating as local L528, splits the classic searchlight signals at Rosedale West, on CN's Yale Subdivision.
The nuances that make this image special are fairly esoteric, and may not mean much to those who haven't visited southern British Columbia in the past quarter century.
Since the spring of 2000, CN and arch rival CP have jointly operated their parallel mainlines down the Thompson, and Fraser Canyons as a shared 'Directional Running Zone'. The agreement allowed all of the westbound traffic from both roads to operate over CN's Ashcroft, and Yale subdivisions, between a point near Ashcroft to the east, and Matsqui Junction to the west. Conversely all eastbound traffic is routed over CP's Cascade and Thompson subdivisions between Mission at the west end, and near Ashcroft at the east end. The arrangement has greatly benefited both railroads, as the total train capacity for this important traffic corridor is virtually unlimited now. Under E. Hunter Harrison's reign at CN in the mid 2000's, 5 sidings were removed on the CN side, signaling that this arrangement was permanent in their eyes. When EHH gained leadership at CP, he completed the task of gutting infrastructure at that railway too, and removed 10 sidings on their side of the canyon. The message was clear; the DRZ is here to stay.
For photographers, this operational change was met with mixed emotions. The upside being that one could now set up on the 'CP' side of the river in the morning and shoot all the eastbound traffic in optimum light, and then switch over to the 'CN' side in the afternoon as the sun shifted to favor westbound traffic. The downside to this is that for much of the DRZ, both lines run on a north-south bearing, so the time with optimum light for eastbound traffic on much of the route is limited to a scant few hours during the longest days of the year. The main point of regret though, is that on both lines many classic locations and angles were rendered effectively useless. CP has shown an appetite to run an occasional train against this current of traffic, to the effect of one or two movements per year. CN has been rigid to adhering to this doctrine though, unless the CP line has been out of service due to rock slides or other force majeure, or for the occasional work train movement.
Cue my surprise when it became apparent that CN was running their rarely used L528 symbol to pick up a cut of 32 cars from a manifest train that had been set out for reasons unknown to me at the Rosedale Siding, 22 miles up the single direction DRZ on the Yale Sub. The single light SD60 did not do justice to most of the 'old' eastbound angles on this stretch of line, but it makes a nostalgic stand in for an eastbound train taking a run at the grade and curves up the Fraser Canyon ahead.
Colas Rail operated 43277 'SAFETY TASK FORCE' pictured at Georgemas Junction Station on Sunday 19/1/2025 after arriving from the south at the rear of the 1Q78 1112 Inverness Milburn Yard to Inverness Milburn Yard via Wick Network Rail PLPR test train. A quick change of ends for the driver and the set would head down the Thurso branch before returning and continuing to Wick.

Pacific National also operate local grain services within Victoria and New South Wales in contrast to their interstate drought relief operations. Having departed Birchip in the early hours, loaded PN grain service 7738V to North Geelong swings through the curves at Murgheboluc with 8101/BL31 in charge on Wednesday the 29th of January 2020. The train will discharge it's load on the balloon loop at North Geelong before heading back out to Birchip again later in the day.

The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture.

Bullet train at Tokyo Station operating the Tōkaidō Shiinkansen between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka.
I took made three journeys on the Shinkansen during my visit to Japan: Tokyo to Kyoto, Kyoto to Hiroshima and Hiroshima to Shin-Osaka. All three trains departed and arrived on time, almost to the second and despite the high speeds they were the smoothest train journeys I've ever experienced. They really put our trains/railways in the UK to shame.

Tōkaidō Shinkansen is a Japanese high-speed rail line that is part of the nationwide Shinkansen network. Along with the San'yō Shinkansen, it forms a continuous high-speed railway through the Taiheiyō Belt, also known as the Tokaido corridor. Opening in 1964, running between Tokyo and Shin-Ōsaka, it was the world's first high-speed rail line, and it remains one of the world's busiest. Since 1987, it has been operated by the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central), prior to that by Japanese National Railways (JNR).
There are three types of services on the line: from fastest to slowest, they are the limited-stop Nozomi, the semi-fast Hikari, and the all-stop Kodama. Many Nozomi and Hikari trains continue onward to the San'yō Shinkansen, going as far as Fukuoka's Hakata Station.
The line was named a joint Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark and IEEE Milestone by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2000.
