With most shortlines generally operating on weekdays, I had to take advantage of an entire Wednesday off work yesterday. Initially I had planned to head east to Delaware on good authority that ESPN would run a blue and yellow trio out of Wilsmere, but when I punched this into the GPS I must've had a brainfart of some sort, as it began taking me west towards the MMID. By the time I noticed my mistake I was already half way to Union Bridge, so turning around would've been of a low mental standard. Instead I caught up to UBHF at Thurmont, where I was very pleasantly surprised to see a lashup of three flared 40's and a pair of oldies in tow, lined up with the 2060 facing east for the return. After a westbound chase to Highfield, I set up in Sabillasville after scoping out all the possible eastbound angles and settled for this winner. A nerve-wracking two hours later, and surely not long before the shadows consumed the ROW, the screaming dynamics of the MMID quintet could be heard roaring down the mountain, and a scene for the ages was converted into pixels.

The Reykjanes Lighthouse sits on Bæjarfell, a hill located just south of the Gunnuhver Thermal Area. This lighthouse was built after the first lighthouse at Reykjanes built in 1878 was damaged by an earthquakes in 1905. This new lighthouse, built in 1907-1908, stands at a lightsignal height of 69 meters above sealevel. The actual height of the lighthouse is 26 metres above the hill. Architect Frederik Kjørboe and engineer Thorvald Krabbe designed the lighthouse. which is still in operation. Reykjaneviti also has a radio beacon with a correction signal. A lighthouse keeper lived in an adjacent house but now the oldest standing lighthouse in Iceland is operated remotely.

While out shooting I noticed a crop duster operating in the field next to me but didn't think much about it until the noise grew louder and I turned to see this. Immediately the famous crop duster scene in North By Northwest came to mind. I was tempted to run and make my escape but I'm no Cary Grant so I decided to take the photo instead.
As always, your faves and comments are appreciated. Constructive criticism and suggestions are especially welcome as I believe they help to make me a better photographer. Thank you for taking the time to look at my photos.

Ride along the historic C&O Canal in a boat pulled by mules.
The C&O Canal operated from 1831 to 1924 and served primarily as a means to transport coal.
At the canal's peak, as many as 500 boats a season plied the 184.5-mile (296.9 km) canal, which caused a traffic jam in some area.
The current boat was named after the first President of the canal company, Charles F. Mercer.

Toadstool Geologic Park is located in the Oglala National Grassland in far northwestern Nebraska. It is operated by the United States Forest Service. It contains a badlands landscape and a reconstructed sod house. The park is named after its unusual rock formations, many of which resemble toadstools.
Operating in true C&NW left handed fashion, this eastbound pig train has just departed Boone after a crew change. They are passing under the old Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Railway bridge on the east side of town. The Fort Dodge Line was started as an electrified interurban hauling passengers and freight. After passenger service ceased, their freight business was lucrative enough that the C&NW bought the company in the late 1960s. This part of the Fort Dodge Line has been abandoned but the right of way is still visible on Google Maps photo. Unfortunately there is no trace of the bridge left.

Pyrmont Bridge is one of the world's oldest surviving electrically operated swing bridges, and it was one of the largest of its type when it was built. The bridge uses an electric motor to open and close, allowing boats to pass through.
I took this photo when the bridge was open to allow boats to pass, while at the same time a monorail train passed above the opening. The monorail has since been closed and the line demolished. As such, this is a photo of record.

A new chapter for Air Canada launched today with the inauguration of dedicated 767 freighter operations. The first flight was operated between Toronto and Vancouver using this 32 year old 767. Departing back to Toronto as AC7304.
HDR image. On a side note, I was using my new battery operated heated gloves and I think they are the bees knees. Although you can't operate camera controls, you can slip them on when your hands start to get cold. I could get my hands warm in a minute when they are set on medium. I haven't used the high heat since it was only in the mid twenties with no wind in the canyons.
Operating across the old Rock Island mainline from Blue Island, IL to Council Bluffs, IA the Iowa Interstate can rightly claim the mantle of successor on the heart of that once 'Mighty Fine Line.' I truly did not expect to be so lucky as to see one of their trains in the short time I allotted for my first visit to this famous location. So this was second only to the UP heritage unit in terms of my excitement here.
Anyway, I figured another frame was worth adding to my archives so here it is.
In this post I told the story of my first visit to Blue Island and the crazy variety show of trains.
Here is the sixth one I listed, as a pair of Iowa Interstate GE ES44ACs thump across the CN diamonds after crossing the bridge across the Calumet Sag Channel on Indiana Harbor Belt Main 1 at MP 15.2. I'm not sure where this train was headed or what it's symbol was but it appeared to be almost all empty ethanol tanks presumably headed back to Iowa via the old Rock Island Line.
