Breath Taking:

The greatest photographs are ones that have the feel of a breath held expectant. When the photographer was so taken by the moment the gasp of moment caused the shutter to be released and that breath of a moment is forever held in an image.

They are the gift of giving the echo of time, showing a moment of the past in the future to be the present every time it is seen.

The day I stopped taking the photograph and let the photograph take me is the day my images improved. Is technique important..yes.Is knowing everything there is to know about your camera and the process important....again yes. But the goal is tho reach the place of thoughtful thoughtless thought. Where you go along for the ride and let the unconscious mind handle the heavy lifting.

I just show up and leave my self open to receive the gift of what is in front of me.

I am only as good as the the subject in front of me. I never really take a photograph. They always take me.

There is a powerful advantage to a camera that can focus at the speed of life and that is more silent than a breath held expectant. You can truly create a place when the spirt of the subject can hide in your camera/

There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering.

Another in the "When I was a kid my father would tell me stories about being akid growing up in New York City. So everytime I go to NYC I always make it a point to find the echo of his memories still living in the city. " Series

I went to the 194-1965 New York World's Fair. We went every weekend it was open. My father had designed the hydraulic system used on the AMF Monorail and he was working on the Crawler and Saturn 5 projects.

PanAm flew A a twin propeler helocopter from the roof of the PanAm building to the Fair and back. I got to do that ride. Yeah it's the "MetLife"" Building now. But it will always be the PanAm building to me.

This image was capture using Kolari Vision's new in batonet mount filter system for IR. This is the 720mn filter. I have to say I am more than impressed

Central Park.......

When was a very young boy my father and I would go to Little Italy (now referred to as REALLY little Itay) in NYC and by cheeses, salami, mortadella etc. a loaf a bread and White Rock Cream Sodas and have a picnic lunch in the park. This is one of the views I remember from one of the "secret" uich spots.

This image was capture using Kolari Vision's new in batonet mount filter system for IR. This is the 720mn filter. I have to say I am more than impressed

I shot this in the Viñales valley in Cuba.

I got up 3 hours before the asscrack of dawn and walked up a mountain in white-out fog with my full camera kit that felt like the incline was between 85 and 89 degrees. It was not my most favorite of “hikes”. All because someone told someone who told someone who knew my fixer that there was this really cool view at sunrise.

It was was worth it. Just didn’t seem so as I was climbing and sliding at the time. Next time…. I’ll probably do it again and complain about it again then fall in love all over again.

This is the "official" vinniev headshot of the Nebelung Fur Gremlin , Gianni J. Cat. (I will admit he is my favorite of the two) The reason for the apparent stillness of a this other highly energized ball of fur that is either in motion or taking a nap in between inhaling food or pouncing on the other Nebelung Fur Gremlin , Valentino J. Cat is that I have the Nebelung fur gremlin memorized with his kyptonite. Boar's Head Honey Maple Glazed Turkey. In it's presence the wild Nebelung fur gremlin is rendered helpless. Pro Tip: Never enter the wild wilderness of a living room commandeered by Nebelung fur gremlins unless you armed with this. Your life and safety may depend on it.

IAs I work on my FOTOmentor award show "Post Cards From the Vaction that is my Life" I get to relive the best moments. This image is of the temple of 10,000 Buddhas It was shot with a D600. I completely forgot about this image. I was on assignment for American Photo to shoot a piece on Myanmar in infrared. So i really wasn't paying attention to the color stuff. I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. I shot this image 4;30am Nyaung Chaungtha along the Irrawadddy river. The plan was to travel up river during monsoon season to a remote village. The trip took three days. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens. This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

From my latest trip to Cuba

Light is the jewel of the photograph. I treat light as if it is a solid object and the subject interrupts my beautiful light. What would you rather see a line of laundry beautifully lit or the Taj Mahal poorly lit? It is always about the light. We write with light when we photograph.

I was photographing a dance rehearsal when the ballerina and the light from a skylight met for a moment and I was lucky enough t be focused in the right spot. I watched her interrupt the beautiful light.

I was walking down the street after walking the streets, 12 miles by this point (thank god for the healthcares program on my iPhone I suppose) It was hot, humid, I was hungry and thirsty and done.

I was ASO (All Shot Out)

And then I was taken. I try to create images that put the viewer in the same place the moment I was taken by the moment.

I took this image a few years ago. Jed Best was also at the meal. We were having lunch we had just spend a few hours smoking cigars and telling lies. What photographers of a certain aage do. So back to lunch, I was screwing around with the focus of the camera when jay turns to me and say" You gonna take the fucking picture or watch TV" I may have pressed the shutter but he took the picture. The impact that this man has had on me as an artist truly has no measure. When the film shoot wraps this weekend the first place I am going on Sunday is to Jay Maisel's studio to smoke cigars and tell lies.

Good thing I remember how to do portraits because I COMPLETLY BLEW IT SHOOTING THE DANCERS ACTUALLY DANCING ON THIS TRIP. AND I KNOW HOW TO SHOOT DANCERS DANCING.... I just forgot it.

Let's see who can I blame? My sister (my father once blamed her for the snow,) that won't work.... blame it on all the politicians I don't like- but they were nowhere near Havana at the time.

Post Cards from the vacation that is my life. the "I have been some remote placeless but....... " section

This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path.

shot with the Amazing Nikon D850, 105mm f1.4 lit by a lume cube with the small grid auto natural light portrait picture control. Westscott 30" 6-in-1 reflector as a flag. The D850 is the most impressive camera on earth! The 105 is the prettiest lens I have ever shot this is an example of the focus shift functionality of the camera.

I processed this in Capture NX-D, Picture control set to vivid. that was all the color enhancement that was done to the image. In Photoshop I used the spot healing tool to address some of the "dents" to the Strawberries that I created when I dropped them during the set up. ( really should have bought the second quart...) Nik pro contrast, and a curve to darken the edges a bit more.

This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

I woke the morning I took this shot with the thermometer in the place we were all staying reading 3 degrees Celsius (37.4 degrees Ferinheight) I had put a bottle of water on the window sill when I went to bed and it was solid when I woke at 6am.

Really the only thing I like cold Is beer and ice cream and I really don't like beer. So down the dirt road we went to find warm tea and a breakfast of noodles and soup. This is the moment that took me as I walked down the road.

My dear friend Kyaw Swa Min said it best "we had crappy weather, crappy beer, crappy food a crappy car, crappy roads and a really cramped and crappy room but it was one of the best times we've have ever had"

I would do it again in s heartbeat.

I am the recipient of the Photo Mentor award for 2019. Sir Albert Warson won it last year, Walter Ioss, Howard Schatz, Elliot Erwitt, Joyce Tenneson, Gregory Heisler are some of the other recipients.

I am in the process of printing a 200 image show (44x36) and as I am going through my 96tb archive I come across stuff I have not looked at, that took me but when the go is up... we move on to the next job.

In a 10 day period I flew to SaltLake City, drove to Yellowstone, drove to Jackson Hole Wyoming, then to Moab then back to Salt Lake City then back to Moab then back to Salt lake City then flew to Los Angeles. I drove 2264 miles and spent 23 hours in a car. After that juggernaught I had a 21 hour turn around and flew to New York city for 7 days then back to Los Angeles (9 hour turn around and flew to Maine for a week.

I shot this image during my my first Palm Beach Photographic Workshop to Cuba in 2012. This image was shot in Havana. I brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras: the Nikon D600 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 80-400mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with my Nikkor 28-300mm and the D600 infrared. Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

One of the most useful tools ison a Nikon camera is the metering system. There is no camera system that has a better or more powerful one. This image was was shot using highlight center metering. It was shot at 4500iso.

I shot this image during my March 2015 Palm Beach Photographic Workshop to Cuba. This image was shot in Havana. Once again only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. I have been some remote placeless but.......

This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival. This image was captured in a hut that was another two hour drive by 4 wheel drive.

Shot with the fabulous Z7 modified for Infrared 24-70mm f4 s series lens at 160iso. Post processed with Capture NXD and the NiK collection Silver Efex Pro in Photoshop CC

One of the core concepts of improvisational acting is the above quote. I studied acting for 17 years in undergraduate as well as graduate school.

Another core concept, this time from Tad Z. Dainelewski is the concept of hiding in the audience. When you are filming, be it still or motion, someone you want to create an environment in which the subject show the camera the someone they hide from the world.

Post Cards from the vacation that is my life. the "I have been some remote placeless but....... " section

This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path.

The Z system is simply best of class. The quality of the file and the perfection of the color AND having access to all my F series lenses just a joy to shoot. Enough with the commercial...

Photography for me has always been a gift. I believe you hoNinor the giver by receivikng the gift. Every image is one that takes me. I honor the moment by allowing myself to be taken. It is in the simplest of moments that the most precious of of is is held.

This is from my most recent trip to Cuba shooting for my "Turning the Last Page: of 1962" book project. I am working on three books in this series Cuba, Burma and India. I am fascinated by reflections and the abstracts that frequently occur in the objects tat are doing the reflecting. I was an absolute joy to be shooing in Cuba with the D850. I would have posted sooner, but my work laptop's hard drive decided that it was done working as I was waiting to board my flight to Havana. I have been on the road since the 8th. I have finally got my laptop to cooperate if I boot off of an external hard drive. Not the fastest way to post process a 45.7mp raw file....

the imaging pathway is as follows: Lightroom Classic was used as the browser to make selects, then using the open directly plugin for Lightroom the selected file was sent to Nikon Capture NX-D for raw conversion saved as a 16bit tiff in the Prophoto Colorspace. File was then post processed in Photoshop 2018 and the Nik Collection by DxO was used in conjunction with Photoshop to image edit this image.

This from my one of my trips in 2005 to Myanmar. Soooo.... I shot this in Yangon just before one of my journeys to the outskirts of the absolute middle of nowhere and traveling back to the 19th century.

Josef Sude, one of my strongest visual photographic influences, had a practice of after developing the negatives he shhot he'd wait six months before he would print the images from those negatives. His reasoning was "so that he could see the image with eyes a new." Which is why I do not delete anything. Hard drives are cheap. So on rainy days (usually on Sundays) I go back and look at the past for things I may have missed.

I hand held this image at a 1/15 of a second. So we know vibration reduction works.... and I must have been on my first cup of coffee.

This is the view from the place I stay when I am in Havana. As much as I am a fan of breakfast buffets (breakfast is my favorite meal) I am a bigger fan of being right where I want to be with a camera from the first moment I wake to the last moment I am awake.

To be clear I never crop an image. What you are looking at are two images mrged together so I can get the totlity of the view.

Yup I bit the bullet and modified a Z9 for infrared. I did a full spectrum conversion and then am using the bayonet filters from Kolarivision. Which means I can have my cake and eat it too. THe first element of the lens dictates everything that is going to happen from the quality of the light and resolution of thar light. So putting the IR filter at the end of the light path is far better than putting a filter in front of the lens. a full spectrum conversion allows me to bring my camera back to visible spectrum with a different filter as well as having every flavor of IR....coool....

Thie first image from my dance with Promaster Z series extension tubes.

TI learned that when you use exertion tubes ALL lenses (even zoom lenses ) are primes. Who knew.... I used focus Shift capture to create one set of images at f1.8 and one set at f8 then combined the two to gt optimum Bokeh. too cool.

85mm 1.8 S series Nikkor lens. Lit with the light coming through my kitchen window. So Mother Nature was my gaffer.

Coolpix 950 image. Campaign Code name "Stunning Lust". Lit with a Westcott sunlight reflector through the window of an antique store called the "Rosetta Stone Gallery" it took the camera 3 seconds from hitting the shutter at full resolution 1.92MP TIF to fire and a minute 47 seconds to write to the card in 1999. Ahhhh... the salad days of digital. Oh yeah I had to walk up hill in the snow in both directions to go to my studio which was just a wet paper bag open at both ends AND I was grateful....

This is an image from my last trip to Cuba. It is a joy to work with Cuban dancers. ( I will get back to Portugal images in a bit )

I find the older one gets the more your images are shot at eye level. I was sitting on the dance floor swapping lenses when the choreographer stopped the rehearsal to describe to the dancers what he wanted them to try for him. This is an image of resting dancer feet.

I am asked frequently when do yo know when an image should be black and white image? Simple when the color gets in the way of the gesture.

This image is of the actress Charlotte Taschen. The first "official" headshot done at my LA headshot studio (still under construction. Plan is to be done sometime in August) This image was captured with a D500, 18-300mm "DX Street Sweeper" lens. (Gotta say what a imaging combo the D500 and the 18-300mm make!) Captured to a 128 Lexar 2933x XQD card. Lit with Westcott highlighter reflector and diffused sunlight.

I won my Smitsonian Award for the photographic work I did (back in the day....) with actors. Sooting headshots has been one of my great photographic loves. I have missed it over the years. So I have decided to come full circle and go back to my great love...

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers. Just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject. Suffice it to say I was the weakest link in the entire project.

This is an image ofstraberries and blueberries that I purchased at the Portreo Hill Farmer's market in San Francisco.

The light source was sunlight coming through the windows a friend's 30,000 sq ft warehouse in SF.

All I can say is thank God for Nikon's amazing focusing speed on the D5 as well as group focus feature! And thank God for 12 fps and a 200 shoot buffer when shooting RAW in frame waster mode. Talk about being taken by your subject to take a photograph. I truly just held on and was pulled through the camera!

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of these brushes will be staying home.This lens has a permanent place in my camera bag.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of the D5/D500- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware (colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.
