Soooo I just post processed my very first image from my latest excursion in Burma. It's an infrared capture form my newly modified D800. Yep I bit the bullet and converted a D800. Up to this point every IR camera I have had has been the camera I was no longer using because I was now using the latest and greatest paradigm shifting how did photography ever exist before it's existence camera.

What I can tell you is for the past eight years every time I have shot an IR I have always wanted the resolution of the latest and greatest. Well I actually wore out my D200. Cracked both the top LED display and the back LCD. I Cracked the main circuit board in the camera have hot pixels on the sensor. I toasted the camera. SO rather than gut my D700 I figured let's see what 36MP can do.

Well it took three months to figure out the dance of how to post process an IR file. First, you absolutely cannot do it in ACR or in Lightroom. The white balance range does not go low enough. There are some other issues but that was the ACR/LR deal breaker. Which means if you are a Nikon shooter NX2. Which with a 36MP file takes awhile. If you are a Canon shooter, that means Canon's RAW processor.

Then there is the issue of post processing a 16bit ProPhoto RGB color space TIFF generated from a 36MP RAW file. Each layer of this file is 206.9 MB. The final file for this image is 3.49 GB. To say I brought my dual core 2.8GHz 17in laptop to it's knees would be an understatement. what I could do in 30 or so minutes took almost 4 hours. I really, really, really need a new laptop......

But the final file is just a beautiful sight to behold. So I have that going for me....which is nice.

This image was captured by a Nikon D-800 camera modified for infrared. Super Enhanced color conversion with a 24-120 mm Nano coated VR II lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef). file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver Efex Pro 2.0.

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers. Just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject. Suffice it to say I was the weakest link in the entire project.

this is from the very first shoot on the very first day I was blessed to have this lens. Because God knows I like a challenge...... Let's shoot with a prototype lens that you have never ever shot with, hand held, an choose as your first subject an extremely happy baby, right after a nap with an extremely shallow depth of field! All I can say is thank God for Nikon's amazing 3D follow focus with face recognition And thank God for 12 fps and a 200 shoot buffer when shooting RAW in frame waster mode. Talk about being taken by your subject to take a photograph. I truly just held on and was pulled through the camera!

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of this brushes will be staying home.This lens has a permanent place in my camera bag.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of the D5/D500- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware (colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds. They are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue I have re-added my "FINAL" version. To MY personal sites. I think the issue really is you don't like my editing. OK. No offense but I do. I sign my name to everything I do. First and last.

Fourth post processed image from my “Marilyn Monroe” shoot with Stephanie Stuart arguably the Best Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the country.

What I wanted to do was celebrate the shoot using the tech of today. Soooooo you will be seeing a lot of images from the shoot we did on the deck of my studio.

I am a big believer in getting it as close to completely right in the camera as reality allows. What I was able to do with the combo of the sunbounce cage and hive lights was magic. We shot video during the shoot to discuss how to do

I used Hive light led wasps lights with a leko lens an a fresnel. Sunbounce cage and Sunbounce reflectors.

CUBA_This is an image I recently shot of the actor Bruce Gray. Bruce was the very first "real deal" actor I did head shots for back in the day. I mean Bruce is a movie star.... I was fresh out of USC and just hung up my shingle. After I gave bruce my sing and dance about "how to create emotionally based headshots" etc. he gave me a look like "really kid? You gotta be kidding. I've been doing this since Christ was a corporal" I said to him, scared sh*tless of the guy, "just let me have control of your instrument for round" ("instrument"is how you refer to an actor in an acting situation) so he said "okay" and just like that he had me over the keys and was let me drive. What a ride! What is even better is that we became friends.

I shot this image today in Cozumel on my Vanelli&Friends cruise as the guest instructor. I captured this with the D7200 and my go to lens the 28-300mm AKA "The Street Sweeper" lens. Just walking down the streets you are always blessed to find a moment to capture at the speed of life. I am impressed with the speed of the this camera's frame rate and the weight. Not to mention the quality of the image.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 80-400mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with my Nikkor 24-120mm and my modified D800 infrared camera.

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

I have a very good friend, a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer who was a member of Combat camera, Mickey Strand, he would teach his sailors about the need to do "picture stories" it is a habit of his I have picked up. This is a "picture story" of a boy and his ballon.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

Third post processed image from my “Marilyn Monroe” shoot with Stephanie Stuart arguably the Best Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the country.

What I wanted to do was celebrate the shoot using the tech of today. Soooooo you will be seeing a lot of images from the shoot we did on the deck of my studio.

I am a big believer in getting it as close to completely right in the camera as reality allows. What I was able to do with the combo of the sunbounce cage and hive lights was magic. We shot video during the shoot to discuss how to do

From one of my old working headshot portfolios from way back in the day when there was some art involved vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo and a yearbook picture. This is one of the "commercial" headshots of the actress Nancy Sullivan. If it were not for a 160.00 loan to buy a reflector, reflector holder and a nightstand I would have never started taking headshots.

This is an image from the Jerry Ghionis's Nikonschool class in Los Angeles. I got to be a student for a day. The man is a master!

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 105mm f1.4

There are two aspects to every image, "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect no artificial light, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontaneous none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

I shot this image during my March 2015 Palm Beach Photographic Workshop to Cuba. This image was shot in Havana. Once again only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 80-400mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with the "street-sweeper" Nikkor 28-300mm and my D750 camera. Set on Auto ISO

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

Black and White conversion was done in Photoshop CS using a combination of NiK Silverefex and the Versace multi channel mixer conversion technique.

using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar 32 gigabyte 1000 speed UDMA Flash media. file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver Efex Pro 2.0.

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

Michael had a set of false character test form a movie he did and he developed a character named "Eddy" he was a good ol' boy who owned a gas station.... I had also just purchased a 14mm nikki lens. Sooo I thought it a good idea to take it out for a test drive.

So one of the big reasons I'm building a new studio is because I'm re-opening my Natural Light headshot biz in Hollywood. What can I say I miss it. Actually truth be told as much as I bitched about it, I really enjoy photographing and working with actors. (I'm a conservatory trained actor myself). I just got these images back from the internationally renowned retouching expert, Lee Varis, who's agreed to do the retouching for me once the damn studio is finished. This image was shot as part of my Palm Beach Photographic workshop. No batteries or strobes were harmed during the course of the shoot. Lighting was done with a thermonuclear device, a Nikon D4 and a 70-200mm VR II f4.5 les shot on 128 gig Lexar Compact flash at 1000iso.

Of the things I have done in my life that I am most proud of is my experiences with Navy Combat Camera and being an instructor. One of the best photographic lessons I have ever learned I learned there, from a Chief Petty Officer Mickey Strand. He certainly gives "salty" a new meaning. The lesson I learned from him was the concept of the picture story. Which I alway hope to do everytime I shoot. That idea is each picture in the story should be able to stand on it's own but when combinded the sum is greater than the parts.

This is the fourth image, that is a part of a picture story, at I shot during my most recent Palmbeach Photographic Center Cuba workshop. Just walking the streets of Havana.

Shot with a Nikon D800 modified to capture IR by lifepixel.com, recoreded to Lexar flash media, 24-120mm Nano coated Nikkor lens. Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Effects Suite and Nik Collection Software.

This image was captured with a Nikon D-200 camera modified for infrared. Enhanced color conversion d with a 28-300 mm VR II I lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software.

Black and White conversion was done in Photoshop CS5 using a combination of NiK Silver efex and the Versace multi channel mixer conversion technique.

This is an image from the most recent Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Black and White Master printing workshop, In this workshop we build a "chromatic Grayscale" from capture to conversion to print. This image is of the lovely Amy Forman. Here are bothe the befor and after conversion images.

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 105mm f1.4

There are two aspects to every image, "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light on the subjects, all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. The light is window ligh and a FJ Westcott 30" sunlight reflector was used for fill.

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

Nikon D5 105mm f1.4 lens. Recorded to Lexarmedia Raw conversion done in Capture NX-D. converted to a 16bit Prohoto colorspace .TIFF. Further post processing Photoshop CC 2017, Nik collection by Google, oNonesoftware ver.10.5. Wacom Cintiq 27QHD, Benq SW320 4k ARGB monitor (for approval color)

This little boy was so proud of his new denim jacket, his new shirt and his new pants and shoes that he was marching up and down the street and followed me until I photographed him is his new swanky attire. He seemed as bright as a light house of happy and joy.

Light is the jewel of the photograph and the subject should be approached as if it is interrupting the beautiful light. Light should be thought of and approached as it is aas tangible a thing as the subject itself. But dark us just as important to an image as light and should be treated with the same care and respect as one treats light.

I love photographing Cuba. I love the physicality of the their expression. This image is of the balirino Marco Hinder Vincent. Light moves an inch every two minutes and this is the light reflecting off a 4th floor balcony glass French door that moments later the dweller of the apartment closed. Ya take what ya get and are thankful of the gift.

Color and BW versions

This is the second image from my latest trip to Cuba. WHAT A BLAST that was. I shot this image withe new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 Plena lens. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot.

From my recent PBPW Cuba workshop. This is from the week after my students went back to the US. This time I was allowed the joy of shooting with the Nikon D5. If Dominoes is the national pastime, boxing is the national religion of Cuba. (or drinking rum depends on who you ask.) I had the chance to spend a few hours in a local gym where several of the Cuban Olympic team train.

So so if you want to know why I choose to light with a thermonuclear device instead do a battery powered light source. Now you know.

However......

There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. Whoa.....

Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.
