The omnipresent, and all-pervasive 'Turkish' barbers... But are they really Turkish?

Roger Chomeaux, dit « Chomo », artiste pluridisciplinaire aujourd’hui disparu, a voué sa vie à la création. Son travail hors des circuits traditionnels de l’art utilisait essentiellement pour ingrédients des matériaux de récupération les plus divers, qu’il allait chercher dans les décharges environnantes ou dans les sous-bois.
Pendant la plus grande partie de sa vie, seul sur une parcelle de la forêt de Fontainebleau, vivant en ascète, dans des conditions très rudes et dans le plus grand dénuement, Chomo bâtit ce qu’il nomme le "Village d'Art Préludien", son monde à lui. Ce microcosme est constitué d’un ensemble de bâtisses, composé de « L'Eglise des Pauvres », du « Sanctuaire des Bois brûlés » et du « Refuge », des constructions destinées à abriter ses nombreuses sculptures et peintures. Reclus dans son univers, Chomo a refait le monde à sa manière, un monde parallèle où la création est omniprésente, alimentée d’énergies invisibles. “Je suis gouverné par les forces cosmiques” déclarait-il.

En octubre del presente 2020 se cumplirán doce más un año (como diría el maestro Ángel Nieto -Q.E.P.D.) desde que los Talgo abandonaran este tramo de la imperial para saborear las mieles de la nueva línea de alta velocidad Madrid - Valladolid. Con su marcha, se perdió un gran activo ferroviario que suplió la omnipresencia de los trenes de Media Distancia. Los Gijón, en sus últimos meses, eran asegurados por ramas de Talgo VII, cuya morfología evolucionó a la serie 130 muy poco después. Las cuatro choper eran llevadas al depósito de Cajo, en Santander, desde el cual se rescataron dos unidades por todos conocidas. No corrieron la misma suerte la segunda y tercera de la subserie. Como apunte basado en el recuerdo, qué gozada era ver estas composiciones llenando los andenes con ese sonido característico, único.

The "Marilyn Monroe" Towers in Mississauga seem to be omnipresent as far as the eye can see. Even when you look away, they're still there - reflected back at you in the surrounding structures.

Taken during our trip to Florida in August 2017. For the uninitiated like us, Florida in August was hot, hot, hot! After a week sweating it out (quite literally) in St Pete’s Beach and Clearwater, we passed through Tampa and Ybor City on our way back to Orlando. Ybor City was a fascinating place, eccentric, eclectic, and with a storied past. Cigar shops were omnipresent in Ybor - this one in particular caught my eye.
Having long since sold my beloved Fujifilm X70, it almost makes me a little sentimental and sad to revisit this image (taken with my X70) - I sure loved that little camera!

The birthplace of the cultivated Rose was probably Northern Persia (Current IRAN), on the Caspian, or Faristan on the Gulf of Persia.

cité médiévale et viticole d'Alsace, classée parmi les plus beaux villages de France
Omniprésente dans le paysage, sur les côteaux aux pentes raides qui montent à l’assaut des collines sous-vosgiennes, la vigne est à la fois l’écrin et le trésor de Riquewihr. Depuis toujours, c’est elle qui assure la prospérité du village. Si ses origines semblent remonter à l’époque romaine, c’est bien au Moyen Âge, grâce à la viticulture, que Riquewihr se développe. Pour protéger les exploitations intra-muros, des remparts sont érigés en 1291, date à laquelle la cité est élevée au rang de ville. Jusqu’au XVIème siècle et la Guerre de Trente Ans, l’activité connaît son âge d’or en Alsace et s’inscrit durablement dans le patrimoine de Riquewihr. Le Dolder, tour-beffroi (sur la photo) de 25 mètres de hauteur, la Tour dite "des Voleurs" ou encore le château Renaissance des princes de Wurtemberg-Montbéliard, sont édifiés à cette période, tout comme les riches demeures de négociants, avec leurs hautes façades colorées à pans de bois et leurs balcons richement fleuris. If you ever travel to Sintra, please include a visit to Cabo da Roca in your itinerary, if only for bragging rights that you have set foot on the westernmost point of continental Europe :)
The Lighthouse of Cabo da Roca was built in the 18th century, and it was the first new purpose-built lighthouse to be constructed in Portugal.
In the foreground, you can see a monument that celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Rotary International (back in 1980).

After a hiatus of nearly four years a revenue passenger train returned to the end of the line in downtown Newport Rhode Island when the Mass Bay RRE's Narragansett Bay Special made a round trip over the entire thirteen mile length of the Newport Secondary.
The train consisted of two GE centercabs, Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad numbers 14 and 66 and the five car regular dinner train consist.
The former still dressed in yellow paint is a GE 80 tonner built in July 1941 as the 5th of the model off the production line. Originally numbered GE 14 it worked at the company's Schenectady plant until being sold and rebuilt in the late 1980s to serve at Northeast Utilities' West Springfield power plant. However, after coal and oil fired units 1 and 2 were shut down in 1999 the locomotive had no purpose. It sat on site there for more than two decades until the NNBR purchased it in 2023 and shipped it to Fall River on a flat car and then had it trucked over to the island and set back on the rails and put back into service.
The latter is freshly repainted into the very attractive paint scheme featuring colors that pay homage to the state of Rhode Island and the omnipresent sea. It wears a newly applied logo for the Grand Bellevue Dinner Train for which it is the regular power. A GE 65-tonner, it was built in 1943 and was most recently numbered USN 65-00566 where it served with a sister unit at the Portsmouth Navy Yard until being replaced with a trackmobile several years ago. In 2024 she and sister unit USN 65-00308, two years her junior, were purchased by Eric Moffett and turcked to Rhode Island with the the 65-00308 being assigned to the Seaview Railroad freight operations at Quonset Business Park.

Generator Car former USAX 89657 built by St. Louis Car Company in 1952 for the US Army as a kitchen car, then later served Amtrak as a baggage car.
Theater Dining Car Atlantic Rose built by the Budd Co. in 1946 as a 46 seat coach for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad as car number 220. It served on the famed Champion and passed to SCL and then ultimately Amtrak before being sold in the 1980s.
Kitchen Car Bellevue Clipper built by the Budd Co. in 1948 as a 52 seat coach for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad where it served on the famed Silver Meteor. It passed to SCL and then ultimately Amtrak before being sold and gutted and rebuilt into a modern full service kitchen in 1987.
Dining Car Aquidneck Spruce was also built by the Budd Company in 1946 as a 54 seat coach for the Pennsylvania Railroad as their number 4051 and originally assigned to pool service on the Champion to Miami in conjunction with the RF&P, ACL, and FEC railroads.
Diner Lounge BC-30 is a Budd RDC-3 built in 1956 for the Pacific Great East Railway. The self propelled car was one of seven the railroad bought which passed to BC Rail and remained in daily scheduled passenger service until discontinued by the province of British Columbia in 2002. It and sister BC-15 spent a couple years on the short lived Wilton Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire before coming to the island in 2007. The car is in the process of being remodeled into a dining car and bar with the headlights and horn operational and used as a shoving platform from the cab.
After first shoving right to end of track in downtown the train is now headed north up island as they come thru the gate exiting the north end of Naval Station Newport and approach the Gate 17 Access Road crossing at about MP 2.5 which would have been about MP 27.5 as measured from Myricks and the junction with the New Bedford mainline back in PC and early CR days. Just ahead at Piers the 66 will cut off so the train can pull by and 66 will couple to the south end and the train will operate pull/pull for the rest of the day.
Note the disinterested young Navy MP at right who will lock up the gate after the train clears and return to his post. Naval Station Newport is home to the Navy's most prestigious educational institution, the Naval War College. There are 486 Officers, 685 Enlisted, 1,030 Reservists, 4,044 Civilians and 2,798 Contractors working at Newport. Average onboard students are 2,068, with an annual throughput of 17,000. Total personnel is 11,111 making the Navy one of the most important employers and economic drivers in the region.

One of the most social vendors in our covered shopping street, and the first one to jump in and break up a shoving match, should one break out - and they have, and he has; the omnipresent Nishiwaki san is one of the first shopkeepers I befriended here, and is truly one of the most amicable.
So, like a true guardian angel kind of character I wasn’t surprised to turn around at last night’s festival and see him smiling at me delivering a thumbs up with his floury fist in a magical break in the crowd. Just as quickly the space re-filled with people and he disappeared. Back to his noodle stall, or perhaps to break up another fight somewhere …
Le mont Pico (2 351 m,) est le plus haut sommet des Acores ... et donc du Portugal ... il est soit invisible à cause de la brume, soit omniprésent dans le paysage.... cela peut changer d'une minute à l'autre .... on l'approche... on l'escalade .... en quelques kilomètres on passe du niveau de la mer et d'une ambiance tropicale à celle du Jura ou des préalpes suisse .... des vaches qui semblent suspendues au dessus des nuages, et des routes qui vont vers le ciel

Les iguanes
Espèce protégée, l’iguane est omniprésent à Petite-Terre, le dernier recensement faisant état de plus de 10 000 individus, soit environ le tiers de la population mondiale d’iguane des petites Antilles ou iguane antillais (Iguana delicatissima). Totalement inoffensif et végétarien, l’iguane antillais consomme des fleurs, des fruits et surtout des feuilles : feuilles de bois noir, de bois de couleuvre, de poirier pays, et même de mancenillier (arbre réputé très toxique). D’une espérance de vie d’une quinzaine d’années, il peut atteindre 1m60 pour un poids d’environ 3 kilos. C’est un proche cousin de l’iguane vert que l’on peut également rencontrer en Guadeloupe, mais pas à Petite Terre. Les seuls iguanes de couleur verte que l’on peut croiser sur l’ile sont en fait des femelles ou de jeunes iguanes antillais.

Comme je l'ai précédemment indiqué, les Surma vivent essentiellemnt de l'élevage des bovins qui constituent leur principale richesse. Bien plus qu'une simple activité nourricière, la vie pastorale, qui concerne exclusivement les hommes, constitue un monde initiatique, un art de vivre, une culture,
Les Surma ont un régime alimentaire adapté aux rudes conditions locales, à base de lait et de sang frais, sources de protéines animales, complété par du maïs du sorgho et du millet, mais pratiquement pas de viande. En effet, les vaches, sauf quand l'animal doit être abattu par nécessité, sont trop précieuses pour être mangées, et le lien particulièrement fort qui lie les hommes à leurs animaux fait qu'ils se contentent-ils de boire leur lait et, plus étonnament, de leur prélever périodiquement un peu de sang.
Nous avons eu l'occasion d'être invités à assister à ce prélèvement, opération qui relève quasiment du rituel et c'est ainsi qu'au lever du jour nous nous sommes rendus à proximité du petit village Surma de Regiya où nous attendaient les troupeaux et leurs gardiens.

j'ai relevé ces passages illustrant le rapport des Mursis (propos transférables sans difficulté aux Surma dont ils sont très proches) envers leurs animaux :

Rest day for me today.
Unusually it coincided with a fair bit of activity, rail-wise, in my neck o' t' woods.
More usually it was as dull as ditchwater weather-wise.

At the heart of the most winding section of the Moselle River, surrounded by vine-covered slopes, is the friendly winegrowing village of Kröv. The ancient Romans were already taken with this beautiful little patch of earth, and they brought with them the art of winegrowing, which continues to characterise the locality and landscape to the present day. Evidence of this century-old winegrowing culture, the old wine estates, monastery yards, half-timbered houses and the numerous findings from Roman times are still omnipresent today. Kröv is an important winegrowing community. The locality has made a name for itself well beyond Germany’s borders with the famous Kröver wine Kröver Nacktarsch. Not only does Kröv have excellent wines, it also has a heap of other attractions on offer. For years, the winegrowing village of Kröv has been one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Moselle. One can still experience true Moselle character here, as the village has preserved its authenticity, shaped by winegrowing.

It is a left tributary of the Rhine, joining the Rhine at Koblenz. This place, despite its part demolition, had to be done as it has been on the have to do list for a while. It was Friday 31st October, a bright sunny Mother Earth day and 11 years on from the No Opencast Action at Tibshelf, Chesterfield. One day before an event on The Future for Clean Coal - a follow on from the Direct Action at kings North, part of the camp for climate change. We got a train to Doncaster, then a bus to Barnby Dun, we ended up getting off early but we walked part of the canal that was once the main supply chain for Coal to Thorpe Marsh Power Station, the loading deck at the side of the canal lays derelict.
We arrive, this is epic in scale with a theme of Dead Cities, a film set for post-Armageddon where the ruins of Modern Life are subject to Mother Earth's Reclamation yard. What a way to pay homage to Mother Earth. The D20 had already been in action, then power fails, here we were celebrating the demise of consumerism, but with no means to consume! We walk round, fall off ropes, laugh as we synchronize the echoed shouting of Gizmo's name and our four legged explorer looked confused, we were for an afternoon the famous three and their dog, minus the picnic.
We returned back to our childhood, it soon was over but we was to return, this time the D20 was on full charge, we had the Pentax and names for the six Cooling Towers, Bertha, Sandra, Emma, Ruth, JG, and Big Bottom Girl. Their omnipresent good looks underneath their apparent ugliness made you fall in, we also met the security and he seemed more intrested in getting his girlfriend into his cabin than being bothered with us, but we left anyhow, we were going to return.
We were now just two, soon to be three as Dan the man joined us on site. We watched the sun set over Thorpe Marsh Power station, got a lift back to Sheff courtesy of the slavver Jag and to our homely pub to get rather drunk.

Their green clubs with red spikes complete their appearance, giving them the attributes of strength and power of Nature, which diminish as the Battle progresses. As they are peeled off, the jackets reveal an original design of a club on a leaf, on the chest pocket and on the back.

Fresque murale "Les Hommes et enfants de feuilles du Combat dit Lumeçon" par Céleste Gandolphe au Rue des Capucins 40 à Mons
Voici en pleine ville une fresque végétale envahissant le mur de façade. (...) Céleste Gangolphe rend ici hommage aux hommes et aux enfants de feuilles du Doudou.
Quelques-uns de ces personnages se trouvent, en effet, enfouis dans ce lierre rhizomique s’agrippant peu à peu aux lézardes des briques du mur. (...) Pour l’artiste, cette fresque aborde le rapport Homme et Nature omniprésent dans le combat dit Lumeçon.
Outre ce rapport essentiel dans la ducasse entre Sauvage et Civilisé, un autre thème important apparaît en filigrane au travers de cette fresque, celui de la filiation qui assure la transmission de ce mythe depuis des générations et des générations.
Le doudou des enfants joué une semaine après celui des adultes est devenu au fil des années un moment clef essentiel et déterminant dans la reconnaissance de ce patrimoine vivant et adapté à notre société actuelle.
Aussi appelés Hommes sauvages, les Hommes de Feuilles soutiennent et gardent la queue du dragon. Ils sont au nombre de huit. Ils l’extirpent littéralement du public à chaque coup de queue. Ils sont habillés d’une veste et d’un pantalon verts recouverts de feuilles de lierre au nombre de 1500 à 2000 environ.
Elles sont cousues à la main de fil noir, les jours précédant la Ducasse. Les Hommes et Enfants de Feuilles sont couverts d’un long chapeau conique retombant derrière la tête, portant des feuilles lui aussi. La chemise des Hommes de Feuilles est rouge comme les revers de leur veste et leur cravate est jaune. Leurs massues vertes à picots rouges complètent leur apparence pour leurs donner les attributs de force et de puissance de la Nature, qui s’amenuisent au fil du Combat. Au fur et à mesure de leur effeuillage, les vestes dévoilent un dessin original d’une massue sur une feuille, sur la poche de poitrine et sur le dos.
