Since I photographed it with a clean locomotive in October 2016, I had accumulated a string of useless images of this train. So today I have put on my work suit to eliminate the omnipresent graffiti inherent in this imposing train. Although the task has not been simple, the most complicated has been finding a "locomotive donor" in good condition and in a more or less similar setting since I had to go back to 2013 to find it.

It's Station Saturday so here's a simple offering of a nice looking one I found a half dozen years ago while exploring California's central valley towns for the first time.

Built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1915, this beauty still stands at MP 112.9 beside what is now Union Pacific's busy Fresno Subdivision originally built in 1870 by the expanding Central Pacific Railroad. Per the Great American Stations site:

Designed in the then-popular Mission Revival style, the building featured a shady arcade along the platform. The principle street and trackside entrances were marked with oversized curvilinear gables—or remates—whose parapets were decorated with scrollwork designs. From the center of the building, two towers reminiscent of those found on early California missions rose above the red tile roof. The choice of the Mission Revival language harkened back to a romanticized Spanish past that effectively worked as a branding tool for the railroad and was an omnipresent advertisement for the state’s picturesque landscapes. The SP depot still stands downtown, but has not been used by rail passengers since 1971.

The depot was later renovated to serve as a hub for local and regional bus services, including the line that connects with the Amtrak station which is located five miles away west of the city alongside BNSF's parallel ex Santa Fe mainline.

Pietro Longhi, born Pietro Falca (Venice, 15 November 1701 - Venice, 8 May 1785) - the spinner - 18th-century Venetian Museum Ca' Rezzonico, Venice.

Longhi painted for the Venetian painters their own lives, in all its daily, domestic and mundane phases. In the scenes concerning the lady's hairstyle and clothing, we find the gossip of the unkempt barber, the chatter of the maid; in the dancing school, the amiable sound of the violin. There is no tragic note...A sense of deep courtesy of costume, of great refinement, together with an omnipresent good humour distinguishes his paintings

God in Islam

Islamic conception of God

In Islam, God (Arabic: ٱللَّٰه‎, romanized: Allāh, contraction of ٱلْإِلَٰه al-Ilah, lit. "the God") is the only one deity of absolute oneness, uniqueness, and perfection, free from all faults, deficiencies and defects; who is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, and completely infinite in all of His attributes, who has no partner or equal, being the creator of everything in existence. Islam emphasizes that God is strictly singular; unique; inherently One; and also all-merciful and all-compassionate, whose mercy embraces everything; Who neither slumbers nor sleeps, nor is obnoxious to decay nor death. Islamic theology confirms that Allah (God) has no body, no gender (neither male nor female), and there is absolutely nothing like Him in any way whatsoever. Therefore, Islam rejects the doctrine of the incarnation and the notion of a personal god as anthropomorphic, because it is seen as demeaning to the transcendence of God. The Qur'an prescribes the fundamental transcendental criterion in the following verse: "There is nothing whatever like Him" [Qur'an 42:11]. Therefore, Islam strictly and categorically rejects all forms of anthropomorphism and anthropopathism of the concept of God. Thus, the Qur'an says: "Do you know any similar (or anyone else having the same Name or attributes/qualities, which belong) to Him?" [Qur'an 19:65].

In Iceland, some farms literally blend into the landscape. Old buildings, they are distinguished by their roof composed mainly of grass and peat. These roofs constitute a perfect insulation to external noises such as the wind, omnipresent in Iceland.

Easily manipulated, peat is used in insulation for the construction of these roofs and sometimes walls in areas where wood is lacking. In Iceland, it has been used a lot in the Middle Ages especially for the construction of farms. Peat bricks are arranged to form the walls, and a carpet of lawn is unrolled on the roof structure. Because of its porosity, peat is also a very good thermal insulator.

Yesterday morning over breakfast a strange story appeared on my TV screen. A young lady of unknown address somewhere in the UK was so obsessed with singer Ed Sheeran that she'd managed to find, enchant and become engaged to his doppelganger. There they were on my TV screen, the blushing fan and "Ed," who wasn't of course called Ed - although he'd met Ed and they'd been photographed together. He did look uncannily like the real Ed - there was no disputing that, but I couldn't help wondering. Would she still love him if he hadn't looked so convincingly like her heartthrob on the box? He'd even styled his hair in the same way as the omnipresent songsmith. Immediately I asked Ali whether she was only with me because I'd once been compared by somebody I passed in a dimly lit alleyway at night to Bruce Willis. She laughed just a bit too much - really rather hurtful I thought. She seems to prefer Jason Statham in any case. You can stop laughing as well for that matter. You haven't met me so you don't know whether I look like Bruce or not.

Well ok, three of you have met me and are therefore able to reveal the truth to the world. But as I sat there watching "Ed" and his bride to be, a second thought occurred to me, which was "thank goodness we're going out for the day." You really need to get outside, even if only into the garden to listen to the birds singing. If we weren't going anywhere we could have stayed and watched the story of the woman who'd fallen in love with the alien who abducted her. It's amazing what passes for in depth journalism really. All of this on one of Britain's two main TV channels as well; not some obscurity on button number 4,569 watched by a handful of eternal sofa dwellers who are so entrenched in their positions that even seven minute advert breaks won't shift them. My regular reintroduction over the last eight months to the eternal brain rot known as daytime television for the first time since the mid 1980's has confirmed that in some regards, little changes in this world.

Happily the day ahead of us had much to recommend it. We were driving east for brunch at one of those American style diners, where the walls are covered with pictures of famous musicians. As I chewed the contents of a large bowl of nachos I stared at photos of Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and a replica poster advertising Buddy Holly's final concert at Clear Lake, Iowa before that fateful plane ride. No sign of Ed though. Then we pushed on to a peaceful afternoon in the sun at a National Trust property on the Cornwall and Devon border where with our matching jumpers we're about as racy as the clientele gets on a weekday. I left with a car boot full of well nurtured and reasonably priced perennials for the garden. The evening took us into Plymouth, for what for me was the third rescheduled show in eleven days, courtesy of the inevitable "concert bunching" as everyone tries to catch up now that Covid isn't running our lives quite so rigidly anymore. I'll bet lots of people who attended the Strictly Come Dancing Professionals show last night also went to see Diversity on Sunday, but I'd be surprised if I wasn't the only person present who'd also attended the concert by Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets the previous Sunday. Much as I enjoyed the acrobatic talents of those much feted dancers, the evening in an audience surrounded mostly by men of certain years wearing jeans that could have done with more regular visits to their washing machines was one I'll treasure. Born a decade too late to witness the band in their prime, I never thought I'd get to see an original member of Pink Floyd at work. When they played the full length version of "Echoes," I was lost in time, transported almost forty years back in time to my university days, listening to the cassette player in the communal kitchen at 2am, sitting next to a half empty can of beer and casually ignoring the fact that there was a pure maths lecture at nine the following morning. Somehow that sort of lifestyle doesn't phase you when you're nineteen years old does it?

Three shows on, we're all entertained out, and the trio of diversions that added a number of slow miles to the journey home last night reminded us we just want to stay close to base for a bit while the county highways department prepares the roads for the summer onslaught of visitors. I'll plant those perennials and listen to Pink Floyd in the garden. I might also go back to the woods, just to sit and absorb the calming sounds beneath the trees. The bluebells are over now; the final one of those three visits last week confirmed that, but it's still a magical place to disappear into. This is the last image I'll share this year from those short trips into the canopy. I'd posted this shot on another platform - that one that likes to force me to think in a 5 by 4 format, but Flickr is a bit more friendly in allowing us to use whatever aspect ratio we like, and in this case, neither 5 by 4 nor the original one that the camera works in was quite right. I wanted that foreground splash of light, and I also wanted to remove the sky from the top left hand corner in the final crop. The Camborne Town page asked to share it, and in doing so added further confusion to the great Pendarves Wood debate that started over morning coffee in the office some time early last year. They are insistent that I was in Pendarves Wood, despite it being a mile to the west of here and the map not giving this happy few hectares any name at all.

I didn't argue. I just thanked them for featuring me and moved on, happy to be outside and not watching people getting married on the basis that their fiancé looks like their idol. I know it's all about personality, but I'm not sure how I'd feel if Ali looked like David Gilmour or Nick Mason to be honest. I kind of like her as she is. And she seems to put up with me, whomever I do or don't look like.

So if you see "Bruce" behind a camera in the woods, don't assume it's me. There are lots of middle aged Pink Floyd fans out taking pictures, some of whom may be sporting jeans that really need a trip to the laundrette or even the furnace, and many of them are just as follicly challenged as the real Bruce is. I'm just one of that army, trying my best to avoid nonsensical stories on the large rectangular screen in the corner of the living room and chasing the light on the much smaller one in front of me instead. It's much better for the sanity you know.

Riquewhir, , Alsace, France.

Riquewihr in French, Reichenweier in Alsatian, is a town and commune in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region.

For its beauty and tourist attraction is one of the villages distinguished by the association Les plus beaux villages de France.

This fortified town surrounded by vineyards is a real gem. In the village of Riquewihr, houses with colorful, half-timbered facades adorned with old signs abound. Some houses are adorned with pretty bay windows. The ubiquitous flowers and climbing plants reinforce the appeal of the town.

To discover the unique architectural heritage of Riquewihr, the best is to stroll and admire, in leisure, the countless monuments. During your no, you can discover the neo-classical style town hall. The castle of Württemberg in 1539 now houses the Museum of Communication. In addition to the remarkable building, it can monitor the position throughout the ages. The old courtyard of the Abbey of Autrey since 1510 has an undeniable charm with its turret ascending from the basement to the attic and vault with eight ribs supporting a terrace. You will pass by the Dolder Museum. This entrance of the fortified gate of the city has a bell tower of 25 meters of height with an external warlike face and the benevolent appearance in the urban helmet. The tower of the thieves 1550 is the old prison. You can visit the torture chambers and wet dungeons where thugs were closed. Finally, walking through the streets, you can admire the facades of the houses of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries included in the inventory of historical monuments. Among them, to name a few just for the sake of their names so evocative, the old coop house, the house called the ranunculus and house winemakers wait in silence.

Although much of the South End was lost to "urban renewal" in the 1950s, thanks to the its listing in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, the neighborhood today is the largest intact Victorian district in the country. This unique designation not only saved it from the wrecking ball, but ushered its revitalization into the vibrant and essential neighborhood it is today, seen in its ubiquitous bowfront row houses, here along Tremont Street. Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Boston, Massachusetts, Estados Unidos.

Having traveled north thirteen miles from the end of the line in downtown Newport the Mass Bay RRE's Narragansett Bay Special has traveled as far as they can, nosed up to the bumper on the south causeway that once lead to the Sakonnet River swing bridge which was the only rail access on and off the island. This is about MP 13 as measured from end of track in Newport though in old days this would be about MP 17 as measured from Myricks Junction and counting up toward Newport.

I'm standing on the sidewalk of the four lane Sakonnet River bridge that carries Rhode Island routes 24 and 138 from the mainland on to the northern tip of Aquidneck Island. This bridge was built in 2012 replacing a truss bridge dating from 1956 whose piers remain standing in the foreground.

The train consisted of two GE centercabs, Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad numbers 14 and 66.

The former still dressed in yellow paint is a GE 80 tonner built in July 1941 as the 5th of the model off the production line. Originally numbered GE 14 it worked at the company's Schenectady plant until being sold and rebuilt in the late 1980s to serve at Northeast Utilities' West Springfield power plant. However, after coal and oil fired units 1 and 2 were shut down in 1999 the locomotive had no purpose. It sat on site there for more than two decades until the NNBR purchased it in 2023 and shipped it to Fall River on a flat car and then had it trucked over to the island and set back on the rails and put back into service.

The latter is freshly repainted into the very attractive paint scheme featuring colors that pay homage to the state of Rhode Island and the omnipresent sea. It wears a newly applied logo for the Grand Bellevue Dinner Train for which it is the regular power. A GE 65-tonner, it was built in 1943 and was most recently numbered USN 65-00566 where it served with a sister unit at the Portsmouth Navy Yard until being replaced with a trackmobile several years ago. In 2024 she and sister unit USN 65-00308, two years her junior, were purchased by Eric Moffett and turcked to Rhode Island with the the 65-00308 being assigned to the Seaview Railroad freight operations at Quonset Business Park.

Between two GEs is the five car consist of the dinner train consisting of:

Generator Car former USAX 89657 built by St. Louis Car Company in 1952 for the US Army as a kitchen car, then later served Amtrak as a baggage car.

Theater Dining Car Atlantic Rose built by the Budd Co. in 1946 as a 46 seat coach for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad as car number 220. It served on the famed Champion and passed to SCL and then ultimately Amtrak before being sold in the 1980s.

Kitchen Car Bellevue Clipper built by the Budd Co. in 1948 as a 52 seat coach for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad where it served on the famed Silver Meteor. It passed to SCL and then ultimately Amtrak before being sold and gutted and rebuilt into a modern full service kitchen in 1987.

Dining Car Aquidneck Spruce was also built by the Budd Company in 1946 as a 54 seat coach for the Pennsylvania Railroad as their number 4051 and originally assigned to pool service on the Champion to Miami in conjunction with the RF&P, ACL, and FEC railroads.

Diner Lounge BC-30 is a Budd RDC-3 built in 1956 for the Pacific Great East Railway. The self propelled car was one of seven the railroad bought which passed to BC Rail and remained in daily scheduled passenger service until discontinued by the province of British Columbia in 2002. It and sister BC-15 spent a couple years on the short lived Wilton Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire before coming to the island in 2007. The car is in the process of being remodeled into a dining car and bar with the headlights and horn operational and used as a shoving platform from the cab.

As for the line itself, this scenic route opened in 1864 and over the years passed from the Old Colony Railroad to the New Haven and Penn Central. Regular passenger service ended in 1938 and freight traffic dwindled. The state bought the lower half of the line to preserve it in 1976 and CR operated this northern section until around 1982 when the P&W assumed the freight rights on the island. Although a few PW moves on the island are known to have taken place they ultimately chose to contract with Conrail to serve their customers in Portsmouth (since CR was still regularly serving Fall River only a few miles away) and the occasional blue CR unit made its way part way down the island until as late as 1988.

Over the years a succession of tourist and dinner train operators have continued to use the now isolated trackage as there is no longer a connection with the outside rail network since the drawbridge over Tiverton narrows was damaged by a barge collision in the 1988 (ending freight service) and then subsequently removed entirely in 2006.

To see a couple photos of freight action here on the now gone bridge I refer you to these links:

The theme of patriotism is nearly omnipresent in Rockwell illustrations. During World War I, ineligible for active duty, Rockwell served in the United States Naval Reserve Force for a short period.

In addition to producing illustrations for the Navy, Rockwell's support for the war efforts is evident in each of his magazine covers showing American servicemen. In The Doughboy and His Admirers, children are proudly surrounding and celebrating a war hero's return home. It reflects the joy and happiness felt by the entire country at the end of WWI.

A real handful.

Shall need octopus arms to babysit.

Balinese dances are a very ancient tradition that is a part of the religious expression among the Balinese people.

In Bali there are various categories of dance, including epic performances such as the omnipresent Mahabharat and Ramayana.

Certain ceremonies at village temples feature a special performance of a dance-drama, a battle between the mythical characters Rangda, the witch representing evil, and Barong, the lion or dragon, representing good.

Among the dance traditions in Bali, the following deserve special mention : Barong, Legong & Kecak.

Sacred cow

Rameswaram (India) - It is impossible to ignore the role of the cow in the daily life of Indians. Officially secular country, religion is no less omnipresent. For Hindus (+ 80% of the population) the cow is worshiped, just like a deity, even if it does not have the status. In mythology, Shiva and Krishna, the two most powerful and revered deities, are always depicted accompanied by cows. Krishna, entrusted by his parents to a couple of cowherds, would have spent his youth surrounded by cows.

The cow is the symbol of life (the foster mother). It gives five sacred products: milk and its derivatives: lassi (fermented butter), ghi (melted butter), but also urine and dung. The mixture of these five elements which the Hindus ingest, is considered to be a very powerful purifier for the soul and the body. This divine mixture associated with rice, then becomes an offering of choice for the gods.

Dung spread at the entrance of houses or on walls is also considered a powerful disinfectant and repellent against insects and scorpions.

In most Indian states, killing a cow and consuming its meat is a crime. But some states like Kerala allow the slaughter of these cattle. So, against all odds, India became the first country beef exporter. Go figure! In India, nothing is simple.

In this photo, the pilgrims do not miss an opportunity to stroke the cows that move freely. The man dressed in white is about to take out a 10 rupee bill which he will give as an offering by placing it on the back of the divine bovine.

I decided to shoot sunset at the mountain top again. When the weather and light is right, the sun rays in an omnipresent redwood forest always present the most rewarding scenery viewed at this vantage point. As temperature cooled down, precipitated overwhelming moisture not only enriches the forest lifeblood but also, together with the sunset light, presents a sublime view that energizes a photographer like me to hike in the mountain in pursuing for such view. Nature's pulling and healing power is an amazing gift to our hustling and bustling life.

With the smell and taste of dust already omnipresent it was most unusual to then be walking through a recently burnt out forest and adding the smell of ash to this equation! This beautiful tree stood out like a ghost. Photographed at 8.14am

Beibei looking tentatively at Baobao's toy. He did not play with it eventually. :)

BTW, both the boys share toys but Baobao seems to like this one more than Beibei.

Katowice-Nikiszowiec used to be a coal miners settlement in Upper Silesia in present time Poland. Before WWII, it used to be a part the Great German Imperium, called Katowitz. Ovens in houses were coal powered,.. therefore, the black smog was omnipresent. By the end of the day, white shirts were turning black.
