Happy St Patrick's Day! We sure got some great auroral displays on our Alaska Workshop this year. This evening had some of the most intense purples I've ever seen (I actually had to desaturate them to look normal). With the sky filled with streaming aurora, I decided to use my ultrawide 12mm lens. Such a wide lens will often produce extreme distortion that is easy to see with trees and architectural subjects. Members of our Action Photog Loyalty Program will be getting a free video tomorrow on how I removed this distortion and straightened the buildings and trees. If you join today, you'll get the video tutorial! Plus, you'll get 10% off workshops and tours and get first notification of new workshops. Our Alaska 2022 Workshops are sold-out but you'll be on the notify list for new offerings. Many of our workshops never get announced publicly since they sell out just from our loyalty announcements. Become an Action Photog Today!

I took this image on Saturday during my one day workshop that I was leading at Ullswater and Martindale. The views from the top of Hallin Fell were spectacular and the lightly snow tipped fells in the distance and the heavy set skies above added to the sense of drama.
I knew straight away on location that the image would be converted to black and white. I even shot it in black and white although only the JPEG remains black and white whilst the raw file always remains in colour. I like to see on the back of the screen what it will look like once home and edited.
For those wanting to visit the area themselves to capture this glorious scene on camera, here is a little bit of info for you to assist you.

This is a shot I took of Oxford Lake this summer just after the renovations were complete. I was notified a few days ago that it was one of 4 shots which were chosen for the cover of our new Calhoun County Phonebook.
Californians were just notified that all National Forests are closed until at least September 17th. Pray for an early Winter!!!
Self portrait of a young woman in Ukraine, living through a war. She had to flee her home once, leaving all she owned behind. She was just recently notified that she must begin preparing herself and her child to flee her new home at any time and maybe soon. This is the story behind this photograph.
You can see the emotion in her eyes and on her face. But what is it? What is she thinking? What is she feeling? Are you as haunted by this image as I am?
To give proper credit where it is due, this image was captured by the subject of the photo. It's a self-portrait. She gave me permission to edit the image and post it here. What I take credit for is the editing and transformation of the image in Photoshop but that's it. The photography is hers.
I was just notified today of the first use of one of my photos. Well, I should say the first authorized use. This photo was taken a few years ago (wow, actually 6 years ago!!!) at the Vancouver Aquarium. I used to have a framed version hanging in my office and people often asked if I dived because there is no evidence it was shot through glass. My old G2 did a pretty good job! I was pleased the Schmap folks followed proper protocol in asking about use of the photo and then keeping me informed. Check out their online city guides!
Oh, we loved this Aquarium. I highly recommend a visit if you get to the Vancouver area. In fact, Vancouver is lovely and fun and well worth a journey.

Thanks to Stephan for the text to notify me of this bird in the park today. It was an overcast day but it didn't rain. This is an uncommon bird for this area and as a result made quite a stir in the local birding community.

The site had where to buy, I ordered her from Amazon! I keep forgetting I have that service! Next day shipping (She was just literally dropped on my stoop) and she came in her shipper!!

Visitors never cease to arrive in my yard! On April 19, 2019 this little Cub bear of barely fifteen pounds at the most came to inspect my yard. It's the smell of sunflower seed residue that probably led him to my house... No mom to be seen? We notified the conservation officers and removed our feeders temporarily in case mom arrived... It as been over a month since he was reported by my neighbors south of me and without his mom in early Marsh which is very unusual, after having talked to them 5 days ago, they had not seen it for 2 weeks and now it resurfaced at my place? The Cub spent the evening at my place eating the seed residue under the feeders and we nicknamed him Fearful because in the evening I had as usual to visit 4 raccoons who made him flee at first contact to never be seen again ... Let's hope that mom found him ....
This was on Oct 30. On the college campus that I work at, the nearby elementary school kids come in the morning on Halloween for trick-or-treating. This year, though, they did it a day early... I didn't want to dress up in my Dr. Orpheus costume yet, so I grabbed a suit and a gas mask (originally, I grabbed a luchador mask, but changed my mind) and showed up to work like this.

The little sweet acacia trees notify you of spring with a display of yellow flowers about a half inch in diameter. You can smell them.
You can also be allergic to them. Eventually they evolve into short pods containing seeds.
It may have been sunny where we were - but a blanket of cloud covered the top of Bleaklow all day yesterday.
I do hope that the mountain rescue team weren't called out (yet again) to rescue any lost walkers up there. There have been a number of incidents recently where they have been called out to search for walkers, lost in an attempt to find the B-29 crash site up there. Even worse are those who, after reporting themselves lost, managed to find their way back to safety without notifying the teams still out searching for them!
The boggy plateau can be very confusing and difficult enough to navigate at the best of times and even more so with snow and mist. It's best left to experienced and well equipped hikers who know how to use a map and compass - relying on mobile phones isn't advised as the signal is not reliable up there.
You might not hear the news about nuclear disaster in Japan much anymore.
However, the situation of nuclear disaster has not improved anything yet, on the contrary it is getting worse.
On April 19th, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) notified the Board of Education and related institutions in Fukushima Prefecture to raise annual radiation exposure limit from 1mSv to 20 mSv.
20 mSv per year is comparable to the legally recognized dose for inducing leukemia in nuclear power plant workers. It is also comparable to the maximum dose allowed for nuclear power plant workers in Germany.
If the government allows 20 mSv per year for the children. Most likely many of them will get thyroid cancer in the future like the children in Chernobyl.
Dr. Ira Helfland: There really is no safe level of radiation Children are much more vulnerable than adults
www.winonadailynews.com/news/opinion/editorial/columnists...
Nuclear expert, Arnold Gundersen says Fukushima is worse than Chelnovyl because it has not stopped yet. A lot of radiation is leaking down into the ground water. Pregnant women and children need to evacuate much sooner.

After returning to the Twin Ports from my COVID-19 related extended vacation in April, I only worked sporadically for a month and a half before being notified that I was being furloughed. Once I was notified, I handled a few errands, moved out of my apartment (thanks Jon and K-Mad, sorry that table scarred you forever) and hit the road for points west, by way of a morning on the DAIR and an afternoon on the RCPE. The storm prediction center was making an afternoon in the Powder River Basin look enticing and I've been inspired by the fine photographs by the Danneman brothers and Ray Lewis to shoot the dramatic sky silhouettes in the Bill vicinity.
After a severe storm rolled north across the PRB, I rolled south and intercepted a southbound loaded coal train with a pair of ACe's on the point.
Final totals for part 1 of the trip are 29 days on the road, 6195 miles and only three nights in a hotel. The tent sure got a work out...
Stay tuned for more.
Blend of the what little color was available for sunset and blue hour as the lights were coming on for the night.
My first experience with security letting me know they didn't allow tripods. Nice thing was the guard didn't notify me until after I was packing up my gear.
DESIGNATION: Protector-018
NICKNAME: Galaar
RANK: ARC Lieutenant Grade 1
UNIT: Vornskr, First Regiment, "Bralor's First", 253rd Elite Clone Legion
The fighting along the temple wall was brutal, but Vornskr held the line, repelling wave after wave of droid infantry until an armored division attached to the 501st led by an young Jedi mounted a counterattack and shattered the droid offensive. Once relived Lieutenant Galaar and his men were summoned the GAR command center by General Kenobi, the lead Jedi General and commander of all operations on Rhen Var. Along with several other ARC troopers from the Two-Fifty-Third, Galaar was briefed of a developing situation within the data archives of Bravo Base. While the troopers had been busy repelling the droid attack an unknown assailant had slipped into the base and accessed the data core. This infiltrator is believed to be a Dark Jedi, a traitor who had followed in the foot steps of Count Dooku. The Dark Jedi had already been engaged by both troopers stationed at Bravo Base and ARC troopers from the Two-Fifty-Third, both were reporting heavy casualties and failure to stop the intruder. The task of intercepting the Dark Jedi and recovering the stolen data now fell on the ten ARC troopers gathered in the command center who General Kenobi would personally lead.
Upon dismissal the ARCs made their way back to their squads, who they hastily briefed before boarding the gunships, doing their best to pass on the most critical parts of the anti-Jedi training they received on Kamino, to the regs under their command.
The flight to Bravo Base was short and the gunships got them as close to the Dark Jedi's last know location as possible, dropping the strike team off in a courtyard within an ancient Jedi temple. Galaar had been tasked with clearing the Northeastern most region of the Temple and lead his men at a slow pace, constantly checking his scopes for any sign of the rouge force user.
The signs of battle were everywhere, burn marks and deep gouges covered the walls, and all around lay the broken corpses of fallen brothers. With a sigh Galaar signaled his to keep moving, there was no way they would be able to stop this "Dark Jedi", Galaar wasn't even sure he had enough training to take one on alone and he knew for sure the regs wouldn't stand a chance. The squad ventured deeper into the temple, leaving the carnage behind as they entered another interior courtyard. Stepping the doorway Galaar's scopes suddenly lit up bright red notifying him of hostile forces along the opposite wall, a squad of B1s and a figure dressed in black robes. Cursing Galaar turned and shouted orders to the troopers behind him.
"Romeo get on the long range comms and notify General Kenobi that we've found the Dark Jedi, relay our coordinates and let the General know that we have been engaged!"
"On it Sir!"
"CT-44-5913! CT-45-2601! Get the Plex and Z6 up here now! We need to block him in, target the opposite entrance and bring it down! Tracker! Take your team and flank left! CT-05-4329 take yours and flank right! We need to overwhelm him, once you start shooting don't let up! Alright Vornskr, let's kill this chakaar!"
Vornskr sprung into action, executing Galaar's orders quickly and with precision, for a moment it looked hopeful, the droids were cut down instantly, and the Dark Jedi appeared to struggle to deflect the overwhelming base of fire. It was when CT-44-5913 fired a rocket at the opposing doorway from his PLX-1 that the plan fell apart. The rocket stopped midflight as if some thing had grabbed it and Galaar watched in horror as it changed direction and slammed into Tracker's team, obliterating the three troopers. Then an invisible force slammed into Galaar knocking him from his feet as the Dark Jedi used the force to send both clone and droid alike hurtling across the courtyard.
Grunting, Galaar dragged himself to his feet, his head was ringing and he could taste blood in his mouth, something was broken. Looking Galaar saw the cloaked figure disappear back into the temple. Galaar knew this was it, he couldn't let him get away, grabbing his blasters Galaar stumbled forward, blasting two droids as they moved to block his path.
Activating his comms, Galaar notified command of his situation...
"This is Lieutenant Galaar, my squad is down, I am in pursuit of the rouge Jedi"
... and with that he disappeared into the temple.

Photographed on the Camden Waterfront. It's unfortunate that someone was shot during this event. We weren't notified to leave via the speakers. They just cut the music off, and I assumed it was technical issues. The fireworks and music masked the gunshots. I didn't realize the crowd had left because I was so focused on the show. Other than someone being harmed, it's sad that someone had to ruin the 4th of July celebration for everyone. Fortunately, the police were able to arrest the suspect before things could have gone from bad to worse. What's even more sad is the city in front of me, Philadelphia had three shootings during the celebration. My condolences for the families that lost someone due to the senseless gun violence. My prayers are with you and any other state that had a shooting.

The town bar is open, apparently under renovation. The previous photo on my stream of just the side door was good to get at that time, for it is now covered up by the odd decorative wall and bales of hay. The historic Stout's Hotel is seen in the background of this downtown scene. I suspect Gila Bend may have 2 or 3 bars, but this is the only one I have spotted on "Main Street". Behind the quonsett hut part of the bar there is an odd and tall structure being added, perhaps large enough to hold the main part of the new, improved bar. Of course I'll try to get more photos on my next trip through Gila Bend as I travel Arizona 85 to get to Interstate 8 going south to Yuma.
Thank you all for voting and supporting me. I was notified this morning that I had won the grand prize...a signed gardening book and a $50 gift card.
