While traveling from Orlando to Merritt Island (FL), we noticed this little loon sitting in the median on a very busy road. We turned the car around to catch another glimpse, and saw that he was startled but could not get up., obviously hurt. We notified a nearby police officer, who went to help him. Hopefully the bird was taken to a place who could help him.

Brimham Rocks, once known as Brimham Crags, is a 183.9-hectare (454-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Geological Conservation Review (GCR) site, 8 miles (13 km) north-west of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England, on Brimham Moor in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The site, notified as SSSI in 1958, is an outcrop of Millstone Grit, with small areas of birch woodland and a large area of wet and dry heath.

The site is known for its water- and weather-eroded rocks, which were formed over 325 million years ago and have assumed fantastic shapes. In the 18th and 19th centuries, antiquarians such as Hayman Rooke wondered whether they could have been at least partly carved by druids, an idea that ran concurrently with the popularity of James Macpherson's Fragments of Ancient Poetry of 1760, and a developing interest in New-Druidism. For up to two hundred years, some stones have carried fanciful names, such as Druid's Idol, Druid's Altar and Druid's Writing Desk. (Wikipedia) Nidderdale, Yorkshire Dales, United Kingdom.

I LOVE coastal scenes, I should do, I was born and bred in Blackpool after all and this location excited me on arriving late in the afternoon a couple of weeks ago.

Fanad Head Lighthouse is surrounded by some magnificent rocks that are so full of detail, colour and texture that trying to decide on a composition were nigh on impossible. In the end, I settled on a low position looking up at the lighthouse with a four portrait panorama stitched in Photoshop CC is the way forward. I could have shot the scene landscape format with a single image at 16mm on a full frame but I would not have quite got all of the rocks in on either side.

The sound of the ocean as it crashed in against the rocks below me felt invigorating and the soft glow of the end of day light gently lit up the rocks just beautifully and delicately. It is wonderful views like these that has me feel like the luckiest man alive in being able to shoot landscapes full time.

This location will feature during my September 2017 based five-day North-West & Giant's Causeway, Ireland Workshop that I will be launching tomorrow (those who have subscribed to my newsletter will be notified first ahead of the general public and those on social media. So if you want to be the first to be notified, simply sigh up at the link below. It's free and only takes thirty seconds).

Basingwerk Abbey, Holywell, Flintshire, North Wales.

Basingwerk Abbey Coordinates... 53°17′17″N 3°12′29″W

Basingwerk Abbey, What three word location...https://w3w.co/lecturers.lordship.action

Basingwerk Abbey (Welsh: Abaty Dinas Basing) is a Grade I listed ruined abbey near Holywell, Flintshire, Wales. The abbey, which was founded in the 12th century, belonged to the Order of Cistercians. It maintained significant lands in the English county of Derbyshire. The abbey was abandoned and its assets sold following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536.

The abbey was founded in 1132 by Ranulf de Gernon, 4th Earl of Chester, who had already brought Benedictine monks from Savigny Abbey in southern Normandy. Likely the first location of the abbey was not at the current location at Greenfields but at the nearby Hen Blas. The abbey became part of the Cistercian Order in 1147, when the Savignac Order merged with the Cistercians. It was a daughter house of Combermere Abbey in Cheshire, of which Earl Ranulf was a great benefactor. However, in 1147 the abbot and convent of Savigny transferred it to Buildwas Abbey in Shropshire.

Twenty years later, the monks of Basingwerk challenged their subjection to Buildwas, but Savigny found against them and sent a letter notifying their decision to the abbot of Cîteaux, the head of the Cistercian order.: 54  An Earl of Chester gave the manor of West Kirby to the Abbey.

UP 6910 west, ZDUNP 03

It's not often that I get time to take a photo of my own train, but this hot shot strolled up to the platform in preparation for a crew change only minutes after we were notified that we would be swapped. I was previously called against a Herington-bound shit freight that was slated for multiple work events and would have made for a bad day. I've been wanting one of these rebuilt AC6000's as a leader ever since they started rolling out of Wabtec's Ft. Worth facility, and this thing did not disappoint; it rode nicer than any other C44ACM that I've ever had for a leader. Attentive modelers and rivet counters will notice that these locomotives have new cabs fitted during the rebuild process, and I can only assume that it further aids in the smoother ride quality. To make the trip even better, T/O ran this thing like an actual Z train for once and it made for a 6.5 hour trip which included our work at Neff. Every once in a while, I get a winner.

UP 6910, a C44ACM, was built as UP AC6000CW #7523 in September 1998. These locomotives were delivered with the ability to produce 6250 traction horsepower and were among the most powerful locomotives available from manufacturers at the time. In 2008, this locomotive, along with many of its GE brethren over time, were de-rated from 6250hp to 4400hp due to problems with the GE-Deutz HDL prime movers. This also instated a renumbering process from the 7500-series to the 6898+ numbering series. This locomotive obviously given the number 6910 and continues to wear it despite years of continuous renumbering of the UP fleet. The 7500-number series would eventually be worn by the later GE Evolution series locomotives that were delivered to the UP between 2011 and 2012.

Photographed on the Camden Waterfront. It's unfortunate that someone was shot during this event. We weren't notified to leave via the speakers. They just cut the music off, and I assumed it was technical issues. The fireworks and music masked the gunshots. I didn't realize the crowd had left because I was so focused on the show. Other than someone being harmed, it's sad that someone had to ruin the 4th of July celebration for everyone. Fortunately, the police were able to arrest the suspect before things could have gone from bad to worse. What's even more sad is the city in front of me, Philadelphia had three shootings during the celebration. My condolences for the families that lost someone due to the senseless gun violence. My prayers are with you and any other state that had a shooting.

Phainopepla is the one member of the Silky Flycatchers family (Ptiliogonatidae), which has only four species, that gets into North America at all. And its range there is normally restricted to the far southwestern USA. So it was quite a discovery to find one of these birds in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan in late October, 2021. This awareness only came about because the property owner was a bird enthusiast who recognized his visitor as something unusual and worked out the identification before notifying others, triggering a wave of visits to his rural home. This was only the third sighting of the species in Canada, the other two also having come from unexpected locations — in those cases the eastern province of Ontario. This episode and others like it make birdwatchers grateful for the efforts made to sort out rarities (and in many cases like this one to generously allow access to view them), while at the same time making one wonder how many instances of a bird far from its normal haunts are never recorded.

It's quite the situation! The babushkas, of Sonder's Baked Babushka fame, are on the run with their stash of meatball sub sandwiches and vodka, which they "borrowed" from Sonder's Loaf & Ladle. If seen, please do not approach them and notify local authorities. They are armed with vodka, meatball sandwiches and and a newfound carb-fueled zest for life!

Lunar eclipse over Morro Rock and Pillar Rock, Morro Bay, CA

With little preparation as to location, I gravitated to the local icon less than 2 miles from my home. Luckily for me, the eclipse ended in a sunrise AND without the fog that is predicted for tomorrow. Thanks so much to Pat Brown for notifying Photomorrobay members of Michael Frye's tutorial and thanks just as much to Mike Bush for reminding me of Pat's notice. It takes a village.

I had been notified of a CWR with an SD60 leader and had a snap decision to try out the Bowmanville bridge to capitalize on the mid-day light. As everything goes it went cloudy. With everything becoming so overgrown I had to walk through the creek to an opening alongside the trout running upstream. Was it worth it, idk.

Red Knot

Stone Harbor, NJ

This was taken last year. To date, I have only been notified after sending in the tag info that it was tagged in Argentina. No date was given.

In early February, 2015, northwest Indiana was on the receiving end of Mother Nature's wrath. Lake effect snow fell off and on for several days. Chicago received a healthy dumping as well, creating havoc on the rails.

In addition to the snow, Mother Nature also turned down the temperatures and decided to whip up the winds. It was brutal!

Any railroader with some whiskers knows what to expect when faced these conditions. Switches get snowed in, brakes ice and freeze up, and motive power fails.

On this particular run out of Chicago, we unfortunately hit the trifecta. Each switch in the yard had to be swept almost every time before throwing due to the winds. Once we had the train solid, the air test took quite some time to complete as one car refused to release.

Finally, a few hours behind the carded departure time, we hit the mains and headed east. Just after crossing the Calumet River Bridge, the lead unit of our three unit set died. I limped the train down to Whiting and notified with the dispatcher.

After several attempts to restart this Dash 9 failed, I made a call to the mechanical desk on my phone. It was soon discovered that unit had developed a serious issue and needed to be shopped.

Not long after this determination, the Chief Dispatcher radioed and asked if we could get the train to Elkhart where a new leader would be added to the consist. This idea involved the prospect of traveling close to 90 miles, under blizzard conditions, with no heat.

Needless to say, this conversation was a short one as all involved agreed it was the safest course to get a new leader right where we stood. This was not possible, for we were not the only train with power problems.

While the Dearborn office brainstormed options, I went back to the second unit and gave it a once over to see if it was fit to lead. After determining the engine was fully equipped, and the heater worked, I pitched the idea to the dispatcher.

It did not take long to get a thumbs up from Dearborn. We set the failed unit out at Colehour, rearmed the marker, and headed east.

Now, I have to admit that my suggestion was two sided. It really was the best in terms of getting this late priority train moving again, a huge benefit for the railroad.

For me, it meant that a rare (on NS) Cyclops SD60M would now be the leader. Through all of years running trains, I never had one of these unique three windowed units be lead out.

My run on her was just under 90 miles, due to adding a cab signal equipped engine at Elkhart. I enjoyed my time behind the throttle, especially the distinctive view.

At Holmesville, we came to a halt for a maintainer to inspect power switches in Laporte. After taking a few photos, I took several minutes to enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest and falling snow. It was so calming and peaceful.

Speaking of peace, my hope for 2025 is a decrease in the level of chaos across the globe, and here in the states. It concerns me to see the direction the world is heading.

Merry Christmas my friends!

I’ve only seen this overflow in operation once in the past and at that time I didn’t have any camera gear with me so was unable to take any meaningful pictures. However, on a recent visit to Ladybower Reservoir I met another photographer who told me about a script created by yet another photographer that would notify me when Torside was overflowing, I subscribed and as promised I received an email when Torside was at overflow capacity. I was then able to visit fully equipped with tripod and filters. Thanks #JamesPictures.

One of my favourite singer/songwriters is Leonard Cohen. He also happens to be a fellow Canuck, having been raised in Montreal, as I was. Probably his most famous composition is Hallelujah, which has been covered by many.

His former lover/muse, Marianne Ihlen, died on July 29 at the age of 81. He was notified of her imminent death by a mutual friend and sent her the following letter:

"It said well Marianne it’s come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine.

“And you know that I’ve always loved you for your beauty and your wisdom, but I don’t need to say anything more about that because you know all about that. But now, I just want to wish you a very good journey. Goodbye old friend. Endless love, see you down the road."

Apparently, she was lucid when his letter arrived and even reached out her hand...she passed away two days later.

Stories like this one just make me melt. I went looking for pics and found one of her curled up in a rocking chair with a book. No book here, but I attempted to capture her demeanor.

Here is one of the songs Cohen wrote for her: So Long Marianne

study for portrait of SS Oberfuhrer Dr. Victor Brack for "Doctors of Death" project shown at Southwest Texas State University art gallery in 1985. /from my own recently found notes on project a translation of a letter Dr. Brack send to Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler, June 1942. Dear Reichsfuhrer! Allow me to remind you that it has been over a year now since we discussed the sterilization of some two million jews, so as to render them incapable to reproduce yet utilize them for labor. At that time you liked the idea but objected to the cost and time allocated to this enterprise. I am now happy to report to you that my staff ,working diligently came up with a new process which will accomplish the same results in the shortest of time and at a fraction of the cost, I am now talking about castration via X ray a method proven at various concentration camps, in short we can now sterilize thousands of Jews in the shortest time; considering the presen labour shortages I urge you to act quickly, so we can proceed. Let me assure you that my physicians and the entire medical staff is at your disposal. Should you, dear Reichsfuhrer decide to apply my castration method, kindly instruct Reichsfuhrer Bouhler so he may notify all departments of the approval of project. Heil Hitler, Yours truly. Victor

This bird is uncommon locally. I was notified of its presence by the local bird alert. After learning what a species looks like and when it occurs locally, it's fun to learn more. I recently learned that this species breeds in far northern North American and Siberian Arctic tundra, then migrate for the nonbreeding season to mostly the southern half of South America, some from Siberia even flying over the Arctic Ocean. "Individuals at the extremes of this range potentially make a total return-trip migration of more than 30,000 km [over 18,400 miles], a distance comparable to that flown by the Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea) and other migratory champions.
