Backstory:

Massive energy readings are detected in deep space by multiple human space faring factions. Upon arrival, a gigantic warp gate ring is discovered. Without warning, menacing alien spacecraft emerge from the gate and swarm the human starships. Some ships are destroyed immediately following the emergence of the alien vessels. The rest of the fleets quickly find themselves swarmed by fast moving fighter craft with numerous impacts to their shields. A desperate struggle unfolds. Which side will prevail?

The warp gate, alien ships, and the red/grey human fleet was designed and built by Daniel Fortine.

The pointy shaped human ships on the tall stand in gray/dark blue, yellow/gray, and olive/gray/white were designed and built by Ktorrek

The human ships that are gray with the white/blue stripes were designed and built by me.

Timesheet needs uploading..

Been trying to upload my timesheet from home for a few days.. Couldn't log in at all! So popped into work this afternoon to do it on the station computers. Worked first time! Sigh!!

But at least it gave me a reason to have a 'Long way round' ride on Navi!!

What a lovely afternoon it was too.. Mostly I kept to the back roads as I knew it would be very busy at the popular spots and it was as well! Glad I was not in the car!!

You can see in the third collage I had a bit of an Italian plastic problem en route! Good job I had my first aid kit!!

The tiniest web on the grass presented this amazing gift ... sigh.

"But to all these duties, more especially to that fruitful Consecration which was in a manner confirmed by the sacred solemnity of Christ the King, something else must needs be added, and it is concerning this that it is our pleasure to speak with you more at length, Venerable Brethren, on the present occasion: we mean that duty of honorable satisfaction or reparation which must be rendered to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. For if the first and foremost thing in Consecration is this, that the creature's love should be given in return for the love of the Creator, another thing follows from this at once, namely that to the same uncreated Love, if so be it has been neglected by forgetfulness or violated by offense, some sort of compensation must be rendered for the injury, and this debt is commonly called by the name of reparation...

Wherefore, even as consecration proclaims and confirms this union with Christ, so does expiation begin that same union by washing away faults, and perfect it by participating in the sufferings of Christ, and consummate it by offering victims for the brethren. And this indeed was the purpose of the merciful Jesus, when He showed His Heart to us bearing about it the symbols of the passion and displaying the flames of love, that from the one we might know the infinite malice of sin, and in the other we might admire the infinite charity of Our Redeemer, and so might have a more vehement hatred of sin, and make a more ardent return of love for His love.

And truly the spirit of expiation or reparation has always had the first and foremost place in the worship given to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus... In order that these faults might be washed away, He then recommended several things to be done, and in particular the following as most pleasing to Himself, namely that men should approach the Altar with this purpose of expiating sin, making what is called a Communion of Reparation,--and that they should likewise make expiatory supplications and prayers, prolonged for a whole hour,--which is rightly called the "Holy Hour." These pious exercises have been approved by the Church and have also been enriched with copious indulgences."

This is a real man with his real duck. I have written a tiny true story about them, and it is below in the description box. I think this is one of my best people portraits I have ever done, even though not perfect. It is a real photo I took yesterday, and I added some painterly effects to it. It is best viewed fairly large to see the artsy effects. In case there is any confusion in my title, I don't mean the man needs his umbrella more than he needs his duck. I meant the duck doesn't really need an umbrella as much as the man does. LOL

TRUE STORY ~ A Man and His Duck

Sundays are pretty dead around my town. Having had only one errand to run on the edge of downtown Springfield, Oregon, it seemed as though I should just go back home when I finished it. The sky was gray, typical for late fall in my State. Boredom wafted through the air, dodging the light rain coming down.

I decided, that having plenty of time to kill, and loving photography, that an image seeking trip further into the core of downtown would be something productive and fun to do. It was a rewarding decision.

The old train depot, having been restored and made into a museum, had proven to be difficult for me to photograph from the west side or the back side. Too many trees and/or telephone poles at bad angles to please me. The only way to get one nice angle on the back side, at least to my way of thinking, was to have a photo of a pretty bench and two prominent garbage cans right next to it. Eww! One of my first thoughts was that this would be a terrific time to try to get a different angle and maybe even park across the street to get it. I pulled into a large parking lot between the back side of at least two businesses. The dull gray asphalt echoed the sky. Being about to shoot a photo of the Depot, I noticed some movement behind one of the stores. I did not know what the store name was. The rear of this business was very utilitarian looking, some crates and boxes, a delivery door maybe, and a few things that looked like they were to be discarded, and a dumpster. The dumpster was close by, but did not appear to be an object of interest. In fact, it may have even been locked. I saw a person in a very big and unusual sort of geometric plaid design jacket. He or she was also wearing a hood, and since the clothing was over-sized, it sort of swallowed the person up, I could not tell the gender nor age of this person. What was suddenly apparent to me was that he (until I knew differently, I would refer to him that way) was holding a white duck! The duck was squirming and struggling, and he kept trying to get it into different containers, an ice chest with no lid, and a cardboard box or two. The duck apparently didn't like the containers . I didn't think it was likely that the duck arrived there with the person who was trying to get it confined in a container. There was also a dumpster, in the area, but it didn't seem to figure into the scenario with the duck or the person. I thought the business owners must have kept a duck out in back as a pet, and that the man was stealing it. I got a couple of quick snapshots while the man was busy with the duck. My mind told me he was probably a transient, digging through their belongings and miscellaneous discards and finding a duck.

I called the police department non-emergency number, and told them that my call would probably be one of the oddest ones that got that day, but that I thought a person was stealing a live duck from a downtown business. I said I wasn't really sure, but it wasn't likely it was his duck. The dispatcher probably thought it was a *quack* call (pun most certainly intended). The man/woman gave up on the containers, and put the duck under his jacket and walked off. I told the dispatcher he was headed east. This went on block by block with me driving and then parking and letting them know where he was located at the moment. I still couldn't see anything but the enormous jacket from the back. After 5 or six blocks of this, I decided to drive further down the street than he was, and turn around to perhaps catch a few shots of this person from the front. The dispatcher had already ended our call and said someone was on the way. I pulled into a parking lot and was facing him, but he was too close to me to get a head-on shot without him knowing that I was taking his picture. He still had the duck, head and neck only, peering out from his jacket. He had stopped to get an umbrella off the sidewalk. I wasn't sure if it were his umbrella that he pulled out from under his jacket, and then dropped, or if it was one someone had discarded and he had just found it. Orphan umbrellas are not totally unheard of in our rainy State. It was kind of like the duck; I wasn't sure if it were really his or not.

He continued walking. It was no easy feat from him to keep a duck in his jacket, and bend over to pick up a collapsed umbrella, get the umbrella opened and above his head, and still have the duck. I found it all sort of amusing to watch. At least he wasn't harming the duck.

I sort of ducked out of that location (I know, I know, another pun!) and drove around about 2 more blocks trying to get ahead of him enough to find a safe place to park and get a good photo. I found one, and he was walking toward me this time. I could see that he was a man with a beard. Once again I was reluctant to take his picture when it would be so obvious, but I really wanted a picture of him, his face and this cute white duck peering out from his jacket, and the light rain on the umbrella. He got closer and closer to my truck. I gave up on my photo I wanted, and put my camera down below my open driver-side window, hoping that he didn't see me do that. I still wasn't too sure about this guy, but he headed right toward me and stopped to ask me if I knew where a train or bus station was. I was very civil to him, and he to me. I told him that the Depot was a historic one, and now a museum I thought, and not really a place to catch a train. I mentioned that I didn't know where the bus station was, but even if he found a train or bus, they likely would not let him take the duck on it. He agreed, and said that all he had left in the world was this duck. He said he had a girlfriend up toward Portland (over 100 miles away) and that he was from Pismo Beach, California area, but no explanation as to how he had gotten to Springfield. He was well-spoken and polite, had a trimmed beard, and was fairly clean considering out in the cold and rain, but really down on his luck. He did not ask for so much as a dime. I asked him more about the duck. What was it's name? I thought he said Pee Pee, kind of nasty I thought, but he spoke it more clearly for me, and it was Peep Peep. I was starting to think perhaps he had not stolen the duck after all, but was merely rummaging around looking for container for it. By now, I had put the police on the back burner of my mind. Of course, it would have been a little awkward if they had shown up at this point, but they didn't. I asked the man if I could take a picture of him and Peep Peep. My camera was right there between my truck door and him. He said OK; so I pulled out my camera and took 2 shots. So much for being surreptitious, but I felt better about the whole situation. Peep Peep cooperated too. I thanked the man for letting me take the pictures. I never asked his name, nor did he ask mine. I said good luck to him and he continued walking East (the wrong way if one is trying to get to the Portland, Oregon area). He walked about 100 feet or so, and I was trying to pull out of my parking spot to drive away. He turned around and motioned to me to wait a minute. He walked back toward me and said, "You have any use for a duck?" I said I couldn't have a pet where I was, but my daughter lived in the country, and maybe she could take it. Since we didn't know if she would, and I didn't really have a good way to take the duck to her, we both decided maybe that wasn't the best plan; so we said good-bye again. He walked away with Peep Peep still snugly held in his jacket.

I left and made a loop around back to downtown and then back to where I had last seen the man, and saw that the police, one patrol car officer plus one police motorcycle officer, had stopped him and were talking to him. It looked to me as if everybody was being very civil. I would kind of liked to have gotten a photo of that, but thought it would be best not to. I do wonder what the result of that contact was. I wonder many things, like what the man's name is, and how did he come to be in such circumstances? I also thought about whether the duck could go to some sort of animal shelter, but that might have been unlikely any day of the week, much less a Sunday. I wondered if Peep Peep had really been with him for the 9 months since it had been a duckling, as he had told me.

So, that is my story and you won't hear another *peep* out of me.
