The male of this species is a colorful mix of red, blue, yellow and green while the female and immature birds are green above with yellow/green below. They spend summers at our place and come into my yard for water and seeds. They seem to prefer choosing seeds directly off the plant rather than getting them from my bird feeders.

Brilliant flash red bird, photographed in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.

All fluffed up on a dreary day, this yellow and olive colored warbler added a bit of brightness. Did not show me the orange crown for which it is named.

La construction du nid est une tâche salissante...

When a bird poses so nicely, I feel obligated to take a photo and it helps when the bird is so beautiful. This female vermilion flycatcher gave a nice pose and showed off her beautiful orange colored belly.

Hummingbirds enjoying something besides the sugar water I put out for them. We were in a drought that followed a harsh winter freeze for Texas so I had to water in order to get some flowers to bloom for them.

I'm not completely sure, but I believe this is an immature indigo bunting. Seems to have a hint of the signature blue coloring on the wings and tail, so not likely a female and for the area, this seems the most likely match. Anyway, it was nice to see one. I haven't seen any adult males of this species this year.

A large and colorful grasshopper that I saw out in the garden. According to the helpful people on iNaturalist this is called spotted bird grasshopper. It has blue eyes with a yellow body that is marked with black spots.

It has been hot and dry lately in the Texas Hill Country. I'm looking back to images I made when we last had some measurable rain and it was a good day for rain. As I started processing the images from that day, it actually started to rain a little bit. Not enough to measure yet, but we can hope.

My aunt's garden attracted lots of butterflies and on one spectacular day in October 2020, I had the pleasure of just sitting and photographing as many as possible. Her garden consisted of lots of zinnias with a spattering of lantana, sage, lavender and rosemary.

I'm not sure why this dragonfly got the name widow skimmer but it is a beautiful insect. This one kept perching on top of this twig sticking up out of the water so I was able to reposition myself for shots from different angles.

This small cluster of lantana flowers showed only pastel pink, lavender and white colors. Lantana can come in a variety of colors. This one is different from the usual ones we find growing wild that are bright orange and yellow or pastel yellow and pink.

I had lots of fun photographing the hummingbirds in August as they prepared for their migration further south for the winter. My yard provided plenty of food and water for them. This flowering shrub called autumn sage or salvia greggii is a favorite among the nectar loving critters. This male ruby-throat was no exception.

La Nature dans sa plus simple expression.

Texas state bird and a favorite of mine. This one comes up to my yard frequently to see if I have water. She (at least I think it's a she) also likes suet and meal worms if I put them in the feeders.

One of the first proper photos I took with my adapted Trioplan lens which has just found its way to Sweden. I adapted the fixed lens from a broken Altix Vebur. It's pretty DIY looking, not incredibly sharp, but I am surprised it produces any images at all. 😅

....Most of my wildflower images are from around my property. The creek that runs through it attracts many birds & other wildlife, that help distribute seeds of all kinds of plant life.

Few trees look prettier than our red oaks in autumn. The leaves range from yellow-orange to deep maroon before they drop for winter.

The most colorful species of damselflies that I have encountered. This male was very cooperative and let me get a few shots as he perched on a dead twig.

Chauliognathus is a genus of soldier beetles. Adults have almost rectangular bodies. Some are red and black, similar to the military uniforms that were common before the usage of camouflage, hence the name of soldier beetles. Others are orange and black. The elytra or first pair of wings are softer than the elytra of most beetles, that is why their other common name is leatherwings. The adults are frequently found on flowers in summer and early fall. They are native to America and Australia.

This plant belongs to my mother-in-law and had beautiful flowers. They started out yellow but as they flowers opened they became a creamy vanilla color with a red center.

Another flashy swallowtail with bold stripes. Montell, Uvalde COunty, Texas.

Just perched on top of our flagpole in Montell, Uvalde County. This day happened to be the last day we saw any of the martins. I guess all the babies had fledged and they decided it was time to head for other places. Can't wait until next March when they return again.

American goldfinches are strictly winter visitors in my area. While they are here the males are in duller plumage. In early spring, they start to get the beautiful gold/yellow and bold black coloring that will help attract breeding partners. They always leave Montell before the full breeding plumage comes in. They are slightly larger than our local full-time residents, the lesser goldfinch.

I find Zinnias very lovely and photogenic. Their color, texture and shape is becoming a favorite of mine! This time with a pretty visitor ;)

My photography is mostly nature. I enjoy macro photography a lot, but it is difficult to decide what a I like the most about this art.

“You are going to come across people in your life who inspire you, love you and change you. And that is a rare thing, but every once in a while you will come across someone who will completely rob you from your sleep and those are the people who are just too beautiful to put into words.” ~ r.m. drake

And that is what Stefan, Charlotte, and Cindy are to me. Before i go to bed I must see there uploads because they are such an inspiration to me.

Vincas, or periwinkles, are beautiful flowers that come in a variety of colors. Easy to grow and tolerant of heat which makes them a good choice for Texas gardens. These had some water droplets from a recent watering.

My backyard in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas

April is the month, life would come to the sleepy little town of Muskogee Oklahoma, the park would have its annual Azalea Festival and people would pour in from all over the world. The traffic would be lines for miles to come into the park. But atlas all things come to an end, the old plants begun to die and be sick. Ice storms and heat took a fast toll on many plants. It has been a while since the crowds came but the plants are slowly coming back from the new young plants.
